This study has as its main goal to explore the theoretical fundaments of the environmental ethics connecting it with the actual concern about two species of marmosets (Callithrix spp.) introduced in the Atlantic Rain Forest, a Golden lion tamarin’s (Leotopithecus rosalia) conservation area. A comprehensive research was made on the ethical principles of the main environmental ethics theories – anthropocentrism, sencientism, biocentrism and ecocentrism – highlighting their distinctive attributes as well as their convergent and divergent aspects. The results of this research were used as comparative ground to an ethnological research, made with the main stakeholders who are to decide which management attitude to take directed to the marmosets populations, and the major concern was to revel existing gaps, divergences and convergences in a way to increment this scientific research with an ethical support to its emerging value issues. Some discrepancies between the stakeholders’ moral considerations reveled through the light of the related ethical theories showed the necessity of a deeper discussion over this subject and the relevance of this kind of approach as a complement to technical issues on empirical science.

Twenty-nine sea-lions were found dead on the beaches, whose carcasses had mild state of decomposition, were necropsied. The organs were collected during field necropsies for laboratory analyses were 24 small and large intestines, 24 livers including parenchyma and gall bladder, 29 stomachs, 24 hearts, and 24 pairs of kidneys. The organs were maintained frozen at -20°C until their processing. A sieve with 150µm mesh was used for screening the parasites. All content retained was analyzed under stereomicroscope. The helminthes were collected, counted, fixed in AFA, stained with carmine, and clarified in beechwood creosote. The small intestines were divided into three segments that were separately analyzed to record the distribution of helminthes by preference sites. Kolmorogov-Smirnov test was used to verify the type of data distribution. Comparison of mean abundance of infection between age classes was performed through Wilcoxon test at significant level of 0.05. Correlations between infection intensity, sex, total length of the individual, and length of small and large intestines were determined using Pearson s Correlation. Action® software version 1.1 was applied for statistical analyses. Among 29 specimens of O. flavescens 23 were males, three females, and three individuals whose sex could not be determined. The average length of the animals was 2.14±0.31m (1.58 to 2.64m) including 13 sub-adults and 16 adults. A total of 996 specimens of Contracaecum ogmorhini were recorded, especially in the stomach (10.34% of prevalence), 42,145 specimens of Corynosoma australe (100% of prevalence) and 512 of Bolbosoma turbinella (50% of prevalence) were found. Two species of trematodes were found: Stephanophrora uruguayense (Prev. 4.17%) and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa (Prev. 33.33% ), a estimated total of 1,988.202 specimens. Cestodes were found in only one of the hosts (4.16% of prevalence) which presented four scoleces. Macroscopically, liver, gall bladder, heart, lungs, and kidneys did not contain parasites. No significant correlation was observed between infection intensity, mean abundance, sex, total length of the host, or length of intestines. Infections levels were similar between sub-adults and adults sea lions. This is the first record of Diphyllobothrium sp., Bolbosoma turbinella, Contracaecum ogmorhini, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa, and Stephanoprora uruguayense in O. flavescens in Brazilian waters. As regards parasite fauna of O. flavescens, our data are different from those previously reported for specimens from Pacific coast of South America.

An investigation of teaching behaviour in primates and birds

Troisi, Camille A. January 2017 (has links)
Many animals socially learn, but very few do so through teaching, where an individual modifies its behaviour in order to facilitate learning for another individual. Teaching behaviour is costly, but can confer numerous advantages, such as high fidelity transmission of information or an increase in the rate of social learning. In many putative cases of teaching, it is not known whether the pupil learns from the modified behaviour. This thesis addresses this issue in three cases of potential teaching behaviour. In particular, it investigates whether the role of food transfers in wild golden lion tamarins is to teach which foods are good to eat (Chapter 5). There was little evidence that novel foods were transferred more than familiar foods, and this was not due to the juveniles attempting to obtain novel foods more than familiar ones, or by adults discarding novel foods more than familiar ones. Transfers were however more successful when donors had previously ingested the food type transferred. Successful food transfers also had a positive correlation with foraging choices once juveniles were older, suggesting they learned from food transfers. In golden lion tamarins, this thesis also examined whether juveniles learned from food-offering calls which substrates were good to forage on (Chapter 6). Juveniles that experienced playback of food-offering calls ate more on a novel substrate, than juveniles that did not experience those playbacks, both immediately as the calls were being played, and in the long term, six months after the playbacks. This suggests that juveniles learned from the playbacks. Finally, this thesis attempted to replicate previous findings showing that hens modify their behaviour when chicks feed from seemingly unpalatable food, and explored whether chicks learned what food to eat based on the maternal display (Chapter 7). The experiment failed to find evidence for teaching behaviour, but results were not inconsistent with previous findings. Moreover, there was little evidence that chicks learned from their mother, quite to the contrary, hens seemed to acquire their foraging decisions based on their chicks' choices.

Morphology of the female reproductive organs of the African lion (Panthera leo)

Hartman, Marthinus Jacobus January 2012 (has links)
The objectivie of this study was to describe the splanchnology and topography of the female reproductive organs of the African lion. The reproductive organs of three embalmed cadavers from three-year-old known aged nulliparous lionesses weighing between 120 kg and 140 kg were studied. Two fresh carcasses from another study were used for some of the topographical photos since these rendered better quality images. The project was approved by the Animal Use and Care Committee and Research Committee of the University of Pretoria (protocol number V038-09). The topography and splanchnology of the reproductive organs were studied and described in situ and after removal. The kidneys were located far caudally in relation to the thirteenth ribs with the left kidney further caudal. The suspensory ligament was very well developed. It originated in a fan-like manner from the dorso-lateral abdominal wall lateral to the kidney extending up to a few centimetres cranial to the kidney. The proper ligament of the ovary was well developed and consisted of several clearly distinguishable bands. The broad ligament resembled that of the cat with the exeption of the cranial part of the mesovarium being very well developed. The round ligament was well developed and inserted on the medial femoral fascia. It therefore did not extend to the vulva as in other canine and feline species. The left ovary was longer, wider and heavier than its right counterpart and the ovaries were relatively small in relation to body weight. The ovarian bursa had a short mesosalpinx that did not cover any part of the ovary and the fimbriae extended the entire length of the ovary. The urethral tuberculum as well as the urethral crest was very well developed. The left uterine horn was longer than the right and the tip of the uterine horn was located dorsal to the proper ligament. The uterine tube was prominently convoluted, situated entirely on the lateral aspect of the ovary and was found to open directly into the tip of the uterine horn and not onto a papilla. The female reproductive organs of the African lion resemble that of the domestic cat and dog with some major differences especially to the size and development of certain structures. The clinical relevance of these differences has to be debated and some thoughts might include the following: 1) does the suspensory and proper ligaments of the gravid uterus contract to suspend the entire uterus closer to the body wall during hunting since the lioness is the primary hunter in the pride? 2) does the lioness have to roll on her back and extend her back legs after mating to facilitate sperm entering the dorsally located tip of the uterine horn while the round ligament stabilises the terminal part of the uterine horn, and does this have a bearing on the fact that multiple copulations are required over a prolonged period for conception by lions? 3) do more ovulations take place from the bigger left ovary and? 4) are more conceptusses borne by the longer left uterine horn? The anatomical information obtained during this study was subsequently applied in a surgical study on sixteen lionesses using laparoscopy to perform laparoscopic ovariectomy and salpingectomy. The availability of these two laparoscopic procedures subsequently led to a wider interest to its application in population control of lions in the smaller national parks of South Africa. / Dissertation (MMedVet)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / gm2014 / Companion Animal Clinical Studies / unrestricted

Peruvian Pinnipeds as Archivists of ENSO Effects

Edwards, Mickie Rae 07 December 2018 (has links)
Environmental fluctuations in the eastern Pacific Ocean are reflected in the tissues of some of its most vulnerable apex predators, the Peruvian fur seal (PFS) Arctocephalus australis ssp.and the South American sea lion (SASL) Otaria byronia. These large pinnipeds live in sympatry along the Pacific coastline of South America and forage within the neritic waters over the continental shelf. The coastal waters off Peru are a region of great environmental fluctuations due to periodic, oscillating El Niño- La Niña- Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, which result in ecosystem-wide food web changes. Pinniped vibrissae (whiskers) are continuously growing keratinous tissues and reflect the incorporation of prey from the region. Fine resolution sampling along their length provided trophic information on a weekly to monthly time scale over several years. Vibrissae were obtained from 2010-2016 from female (n=47), male (n=17) and newborn pup (n=6) fur seals and male (n=6) sea lions collected during pinniped rookery health assessments. Stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in vibrissae infer temporal primary production and dietary variations in individuals. ENSO conditions were dictated by the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) recordings from the Niño 1+2 Index region over 12 years. Fluctuations in vibrissae δ15N were correlated to varying SSTA readings (p15N (p15N signatures (p13C revealed minor fluctuations ranging from -18.13 to -13.17‰over the 12-year period, δ13C did reveal a significant depletion and enrichment oscillation during specific points in time, such as the 2014-2016 El Niño event, which ranged from -15.09 to -13.83‰(p=0.040). Stable isotope signatures varied between genders, but not by species. Female fur seal stable isotope signatures were significantly more depleted in both δ13C and δ15N than males (p13C and δ15N were inversely correlated to each other from 2014 to 2016; this was during the strongest El Nino-Southern Oscillation event on record (p=0.002). As δ13Csignatures became more enriched, δ15N signatures depleted from 2014 until 2016. This suggests that when ENSO warm phase conditions occur, the environments resources change in historic foraging grounds, possibly forcing pinnipeds to travel farther distances offshoreto forage or altering what they feed on throughout these stressful conditions. This study serves to help understand of the impact of oceanographic influences on these pinnipeds.ENSO conditions influence the trophic dynamics and resultant survival adaptations in both of these vulnerable Peruvian marine mammals.

La Manna, Jimmy 02 February 2024 (has links)
As an important aristocratic family in medieval Normandy, the Estoutevilles (or Stutevilles) took part in several events that shaped this region of France, from the Norman Conquest to the Hundred Years’ War. These feats along with various marriages with Norman aristocratic and even royal family members allowed the Estoutevilles to progressively climb the ranks to reach the highest echelons of medieval society. A lot of the members of this family was buried within the abbey church of Valmont, which was founded by Nicolas I d’Estouteville during the 12th century. The Estouteville family have used their monuments to confirm their particular status within the feudal society, be it by the location of their burial grounds within the abbatial church they were buried, by their monumentality, the quality of the materials or by their epigraphic, heraldic and iconographic elements. Indeed, by imitating those of other great feudal lines, the tombs of the Estouteville truly participate in the construction of the identity of this family, notably through their relations with the monastic community of Valmont.

The feeding and spatial ecology of cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) and lions (Panthera leo) in the Little Karoo, South Africa

Vorster, Paul Hendrik January 2012 (has links)
The re-introduction of large carnivores into relatively small conservation areas that fall within the historic distribution range of the species is becoming an increasingly common occurrence. The success of such re-introductions depends very much on the quality of the information that is available to guide management decisions, but in many cases, little information is available. The re-introduction of lions and cheetahs to Sanbona created the opportunity to monitor the behaviour of re-introduced predators to a relatively large system that was characterised by a low ungulate stocking density and little standing water. The broad aims were to study the feeding and spatial ecologies of the lions and cheetahs, to collect standard base-line data, and to examine the effects of the low prey density and limited standing water on habitat selection, range size and diet. The diet (data collected from direct observation and faecal analysis) was similar to that reported in previous studies, and lions and cheetahs preferred greater kudu, black wildebeest and springbok. Lions preferred medium to large prey items, and cheetahs preferred medium to small prey items. The hilly and mountainous terrain of much of the reserve meant that only 50% of the total space was available to the predators. Home ranges of most of the predators were focused around the single large body of standing water. This is likely to have been a response to the water, the vegetation, and the prey that was attracted to these. Habitat selection was also influenced by inter and intra-specific interactions at least for a solitary male lion and female cheetahs. Range sizes were larger than on some other reserves and it is suggested that this was a result of the low prey density. These results form the basis for management recommendations including the importance of continuing to monitor the system and opening up additional parts of the reserve to the predators.

Jouet, Gwenael 12 November 2007 (has links) (PDF)
