Cookies på gott eller ont : En studie om hur tonåringar upplever att deras köpbeteende påverkas av digital one-to-one marknadsföring

Agiden, Jelia, Colliander, Ellen January 2020 (has links)
With the steady and rapid growth of technology, digital marketing has become one of the most common ways for advertisers to reach out to a broader audience. Instagram and Snapchat are the most commonly used social networking services among today’s adolescents that highly utilise the concept of personalised digital advertising through third parties. One-to-one marketing is a form of personalised marketing that aims to collect information about individual consumers in order to provide each individual with advertisements fitted to their interests. This study takes a closer look on how teenagers perceive the personal effect of one-to-one marketing.  The empirical research was obtained from qualitative interviews carried out among teenagers aged 15 to 17 years old. Upon conclusion of the study, it was found that all respondents felt influenced by digital one-to-one marketing and are worried about the use of their information. Ultimately, respondents think the risks outweigh the benefits and want to know where the company gets their information from. In adolescents, one-to-one marketing can create needs that did not exist before and can be met through the provision of more options. Hence, one-to-one marketing has a direct impact on the purchasing behaviour of adolescents.

Novel One-Pot Syntheses of Uracils and Arylidenehydantoins, and Analysis of Xylitol in Chewing Gum by Gc-Ms

Rajapaksha, RM Suranga Mahesh 06 May 2017 (has links)
The first section of this dissertation (Chapter I-III) describes the development of new methodologies to prepare uracil and arylidenehydantoin derivatives. A regioselective synthesis of 6-alkyl- and 6-aryluracils was developed by the dimerization of 3-alkyl- and 3-aryl-2-propynamides promoted by either Cs2CO3 or K3PO4. A range of 3-aryl-2- propynamides, with both electron-deficient and electron-rich 3-aryl substituents, were successfully reacted in high yields. A synthetic route to prepare arylidenehydantoins was developed using the Pd-catalyzed dimerization of 3-aryl-2-propynamides. Both electron rich and electron deficient 3-aryl-2-propynamides were dimerized successfully to produce the desired arylidenehydantoins in moderate to excellent yields. The second section of this dissertation (Chapter IV and V) describes the development of a reliable low-cost method to determine amounts of xylitol in sugar free gum samples to predict dangerous exposure levels for dogs. Xylitol is generally considered safe for human consumption and is frequently used in sugar free gum, however, it is extremely toxic to dogs. It is unknown if partially consumed chewing gum is also dangerous. A method to determine xylitol content of these sugar free gum samples employing GC-MS with direct aqueous injection (DAI) is presented. This method was successfully applied to over 120 samples including, fresh gum, 5 min, 15 min, and 30 min chewed gum samples. Further extension of this work resulted in the development of an undergraduate laboratory experiment for upper-level undergraduate chemistry students which teaches calibration methods, xylitol extraction, sample preparation for GC-MS analysis, and data analysis.

One-Dimensional Simulation Methods for Distributed Feedback Semiconductor Lasers

Xi, Yanping 01 1900 (has links)
<p> The semiconductor distributed feedback (DFB) laser is mainly characterised by the single-longitudinal-mode operation with a narrow spectral linewidth, which leads to its wide application in fiber-optic communication systems. Several numerical models ranging from physics-based to phenomenological ones have been developed with different level of complexities and for different applications. However, with the continuous improvement in designs of DFB lasers, more efficient simulation methods with sufficient accuracy are highly desirable. In this thesis, I mainly focus on developing new one-dimensional (ID) simulation methods of DFB lasers with improved computational efficiency and physical insight without compromise on accuracy. Further, a new design idea for DFB lasers are explored and investigated by using the simulation techniques developed.</p> <p> Starting with the well-known ID time-dependent coupled-wave equations, we have examined two different solution schemes, i.e. the traveling wave model (TWM) and the standing wave model (SWM). The TWM has the merits of straightforward implementation, and being able to simulate a large variety of the structure even if the laser cavity has a small quality factor (Q-factor). Firstly, the existing time-domain solution schemes are reviewed and compared under a unified framework. A high-order split-step traveling wave method is then developed. Its validity and efficiency are examined through the comparison made with the conventional split-step scheme.</p> <p> For laser structures with large variations of the carrier/photon density, however, the TWM is not computationally economical. The SWM on the other hand has its advantages in dealing with the laser cavity with a relatively large Q-factor. Two different standing wave models are proposed to simulate the index-coupled and gain-coupled DFB lasers, respectively. The complexities of these two numerical models are further reduced through an approximation made on the time-dependent carrier distribution. Finally, the proposed SWMs are reduced to a similar form to the rate equation formulations for establishing the linkage between the 1D model and the rate equation model. More physical insights into the conventional and powerful rate equations will be gained through this linkage.</p> <p> The final part of the thesis focus on the analysis of a novel design of single-mode operation DFB laser employing the dispersive grating. The design idea is verified by the proposed SWM.</p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Performance Analysis and Evaluation of Dynamic Loop Scheduling Techniques in a Competitive Runtime Environment for Distributed Memory Architectures

Balasubramaniam, Mahadevan 10 May 2003 (has links)
Parallel computing offers immense potential to solve large, complex scientific problems. Load imbalance is a major impediment in obtaining high performance by a parallel system. One principal form of parallelism found in scientific applications is data parallelism. Loops without dependencies are data parallel. During the execution of large parallel loops, computational requirements vary due to problem, algorithmic and systemic characteristics. These factors lead to load imbalance which in turn degrades the performance of an application. Over the years, a number of dynamic loop scheduling techniques have been proposed to address one or more of these factors. However, there is no single strategy that works well for different problem domains and system characteristics. Moreover, load balancing during runtime is complicated because of its need for dynamic data redistribution. Therefore, there is a distinct need to integrate the dynamic loop scheduling techniques into a single package and provide them as an application programming interface (API) to the application developer. In recent years, along this direction, a number of dynamic loop scheduling techniques have been integrated into the compiler technologies for shared memory environments. On the other hand, there is no such integrated approach for distributed memory applications. The purpose of this thesis is to present the design, implementation and effectiveness of an integrated approach:the dynamic loop scheduling techniques are integrated into a runtime system for distributed memory architectures. For this purpose, we choose the newly developed parallel runtime environment for multicomputer architecture (PREMA) with its main components: the data movement and control substrate (DMCS) and mobile object layer (MOL). This runtime system has recently been developed and has demonstrated to be one of the most competitive runtime systems for distributed memory architectures. The significance of this work is that the proposed API will enhance the performance of parallel applications by reducing the load imbalance among processors caused by a wide range of factors and will reduce the software developmental cost required for load balancing. With the integration of the scheduling capabilities into the runtime system, its applicability has been expanded. The performance of the API has been evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. The overhead of the API has been studied analytically and measured experimentally. Three parallel benchmarks including scientific applications of general interest (N-body simulations, automatic quadrature routine and unstructured grid heat solver) were considered for experimentation purpose. Based on the experiments conducted, a cost improvement of up to 76% over the straight forward parallel benchmark has been obtained. For certain application characteristics, the overhead of the runtime system was found to be within 10% of the underlying messaging layer. These results demonstrate that, in large scientific applications it is possible and desirable to combine the rich functionality of a runtime system with the advantages of scheduling techniques to achieve high performance.

United States Diplomatic and Military Relations with the Republic of China in the Era of the Vietnam War, 1961-1969

Pellegrin, Charles John 07 May 2005 (has links)
In the 1950s, the Republic of China (ROC) on the island of Taiwan was a Cold War ally of the United States. Led by President Chiang Kai-shek and his ruling Kuomintang Party, the ROC received military, financial, and humanitarian assistance from the U.S., and enjoyed support in the White House, from the Departments of State and Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the Democratic and Republican Parties. President Chiang even employed public relations firms and political pressure groups to help generate public support and to sway American policymakers to favor his cause. By the end of the 1970s, however, the ROC had lost its seat in the United Nations and no longer maintained formal diplomatic relations with the United States. Why would the United States abandon a long-standing World War II ally, recipient of American aid, and fellow anti-communist? The 1960s proved to be a pivotal decade in the diplomatic and military relationship between the United States and the ROC. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, both Democrats, publicly promised support for Chiang and the Chinese Nationalists on Taiwan. Chiang hoped to secure continued military aid and diplomatic support by relying upon allies in the State Department, the Central Intelligence Agency, and in the U.S. Congress, and even occasionally making threats to take actions detrimental to American policy. Throughout the 1960s, the U.S.-ROC relationship was tested by events in the United Nations, the Taiwan Strait, and Southeast Asia. By the end of the decade, the ROC had lost millions in American aid and the United States had publicly started to consider normalizing relations with the People?s Republic of China. This dissertation will show that U.S.-ROC relations in the 1960s deteriorated due to a combination of factors. The Vietnam War was one of several factors that helped bring an end to formal American relations with the Republic of China. The Vietnam War caused a conflict of interest, whereby American containment of communism in Southeast Asia clashed with ROC plans to maintain its international legitimacy and to restore its rule over all China. Additionally, bureaucratic changes within the State Department, the demise and ineffectiveness of the China Lobby, and the changing make-up of the United Nations resulting from decolonization also contributed to the decline of U.S.-ROC relations.

Please note: Editorial Studies works are permanently embargoed in OpenBU. No public access is forecasted for this item. To request private access, please click on the locked Download file link, and fill out the appropriate web form. / This dissertation is a study of the endnotes to David Jones's In Parenthesis. Jones is a 20th-century Welsh-English author and visual artist who provides semi-extensive annotations to his work in the form of footnotes, endnotes, or prefaces. This study examines Jones's editorial practice with focus on In Parenthesis. The bulk of the work is a critical edition of his notes (which could be followed in the future by a critical edition of the whole of In Parenthesis). Manuscript notes are collated and compared with the published text in order to examine Jones's working methods and use of annotation. Editorial commentary clarifies allusions and indicates where Jones has used similar material in his other writings (The Anathemata and a number of independently published essays) and art (engravings, paintings, and letterings; in particular the illustrations for an edition of S.T. Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"). Further editorial annotation is included where Jones does not explain allusions and references in the body of In Parenthesis. Because there is evidence that Jones is an inconsistent editor of his own work, his omission of these annotations may be accidental rather than deliberate. An initial discussion preceding the collated notes provides personal and historical context for Jones's practice. To provide further context, a chronology and bibliographical description are included, as is a list of key sources and frequency of use, as well as illustrations and facsimile drafts. This study draws attention to the key works and themes that appear not only in In Parenthesis, but again in The Anathemata, Jones's artwork, essays, and other writings. / 2999-01-01
