The ZnO nanowires not only act as morphology-defining skeleton but also contribute chemically to the final composition of the nanostructures. By controlling the reaction time between ZnO and FeCl₃ solution, ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocable arrays, stoichiometric ZnFe₂O₄ nanotube arrays, nonstoichiometric ZnFe₂O₄ nanotube arrays, ZnFe₂O₄/α-Fe₂O₃ nanotube arrays and α-Fe₂O₃ nanotube arrays can be synthesized in a controlled manner after calcination. Both ZnFe₂O₄ and α-Fe₂O₃ nanotube arrays exhibit visible light absorption and their bandgap are estimated to be ~2.3 eV and ~1.7 eV, respectively. / The detailed structural information of the ZnFe₂O₄ nanotube arrays are obtained by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). In particular, EELS are carried out for two different series (i.e., temperature and stoichiometric series). The magnetic properties of these samples are found to closely correlate to their structural characteristics. Firstly, with the decrease of the calcination temperature from 600 °C to 400 °C, more Fe³⁺ions occupy A sites (tetrahedral sites in spinel structure) rather than their equilibrium B sites (octahedral sites in spinel structure). The deviation from the normal spinel structure leads to the enhancement of superexchange interactions between Fe³⁺ions in A and B sites, and thus results in an increase in blocking temperature (TB), magnetic anisotropic constant (K), saturation magnetization (MS, at 3 K and 300 K), coercivity (HC, at 3 K) and a decrease in MS(3 K)/MS(300 K) ratios. Secondly, by comparing stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric ZnFe₂O₄ nanotubes calcinated at the same temperature, we found that the nonstoichiometric nanotubes (Fe:Zn > 2) shows similar ratios of Fe³⁺in A and B sites to that of the stoichiometric one. The extra Fe³⁺in the crystal also enhances the superexchange interactions of Fe³⁺, which results in larger TB, K, MS(at 3 K and 300 K) and HC(at 3 K), and smaller MS(3 K)/MS(300 K) ratio. Lastly, α-Fe₂O₃ nanotubes, as an extreme case of the nonstoichiometric sample, show typical Morin-transition characterization under small external field, and field-induced spin-flop transition at large external field. / On the other hand, we found that the visible-light-driven photodegradation activities of ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocable arrays are superior to those of the ZnO nanowire arrays and ZnFe₂O₄ nanotube arrays using RhB as the probe molecules. All the three nanostructures show degradation of RhB molecules under visible light irradiation, but they take different degradation pathways. The degradation of RhB in the presence of ZnO nanowire arrays is attributed to the dye-sensitized mechanism, and the photodegradation activity is the worst. ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocable arrays and ZnFe₂O₄ nanotube arrays have the same degradation mechanism, that is, reactive radicals produced by photogenerated electron-hole pairs in the visible-light-active ZnFe₂O₄ are responsible for the photodegradation of RhB. However, the nanocable arrays show much higher degradation capability. Design of a Power-Assist Hemiplegic WheelchairLiadis, Keith Nicholas 09 May 2006 (has links)
Current one-handed manual wheelchairs are difficult to propel because one arm can only provide half the power that is ascertained in a two-handed manual wheelchair. A power-assisted hemiplegic (one-sided paralysis) wheelchair was developed that can effectively be propelled with one arm while remaining maneuverable, lightweight, and foldable. An existing manual wheelchair was minimally modified and fitted with powerassisted components that could alternatively be attached to a wide range of manual wheelchairs. The design implements a motor and gear train to power the wheel on the users affected side, encoders on both rear wheels to track wheel position, and a heel interface on the footrest to control steering. A controls program was developed that analyzes wheel position and steering to respond to the motion of the hand-driven wheel. Extensive testing was performed to ensure design integrity. Testing results showed that the prototype successfully met and exceeded predetermined design specifications based on industry standard testing procedures. The design has the potential to deliver increased freedom to a considerable consumer base.

The relative importance of human and animal sources of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in immunocompromised patients in hospitalGouliouris, Theodore January 2019 (has links)
Enterococcus faecium is a leading cause of hospital-acquired infection, disproportionally affecting immunocompromised and critically ill patients. Despite infection control measures, rates of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium (VREfm) bacteraemias have failed to decline in the United Kingdom, and Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) report the highest numbers nationally. The aims of my PhD were to use epidemiological and genomic surveillance data to establish risk factors for acquisition and infection with E. faecium in patients at CUH, and to use a One Health approach to consider possible sources for hospital patients by relating bloodstream-associated isolates with those cultured from livestock and the environment in the same geographic region. A retrospective matched nested case control study was performed to determine risk factors for VRE bacteraemia relating to antibiotic exposure. 235 cases were matched to 220 controls for length of admission, year, specialty and ward type. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that duration of exposure to parenteral vancomycin, fluoroquinolones and meropenem were independently associated with VRE bacteraemia. This provides evidence for the importance of antimicrobial stewardship targeting high-risk antibiotics in patients at risk of VRE bacteraemia. VREfm bacteraemia may be complicated by disease recurrence. Whole genome sequencing was used to distinguish between relapse and reinfection in 14 episodes of recurrent VREfm bacteraemia. This demonstrated that 10 (71%) episodes were due to reinfection with a new strain, with reinfection being more likely with increasing time between two positive cultures. This study also evaluated 9 patients with blood cultures positive for both VREfm and vancomycin-susceptible E. faecium (VSEfm), the majority (78%) of which were found to be unrelated strains. More than half of all study isolates from these two patient groups were closely related to another isolate causing bacteraemia at CUH, suggesting that hospital acquisition of VREfm is a driver for infection and recurrence. A cross-sectional study of E. faecium in raw and treated wastewater from 20 municipal water treatment plants across the East of England revealed widespread dissemination of healthcare-associated lineages of VREfm in all sampled locations including rural areas, and environmental release in treated wastewater in 17/20 locations. Wastewater isolates were genetically intermixed with isolates causing bacteraemia at CUH, including highly related isolates indicating recent transmission between the two reservoirs. These findings are consistent with widespread distribution of healthcare-associated VREfm in community populations. A One Health approach incorporating sampling from livestock (10 pork, 10 cattle, 9 poultry farms) detected no VREfm in animals whilst 2 independent meat surveys demonstrated VREfm in 1-2% of uncooked products. Genomic comparison of >1400 E. faecium isolates from livestock, meat, wastewater and almost 800 people with bloodstream infection demonstrated that livestock and human isolates were genetically distinct. Analysis of the accessory genome added further evidence for distinct gene content associated with niche adaptation. An analysis of mobile genes encoding antibiotic resistance revealed limited evidence of sharing between human and animal populations. A prospective longitudinal study in haematology patients at CUH over 6 months revealed high rates of VREfm carriage (63% of cases) and environmental contamination (49% of samples). Genomic analysis elucidated complex colonisation dynamics with frequent loss and acquisition of subtypes, including unsuspected acquisition of new VREfm subtypes in patients already colonised with VREfm, and multiple transmission chains involving patients and the environment, including some leading to bacteraemia. These findings highlight the shortcomings of infection control and environmental cleaning and provide the basis for revised interventions.

Expanding the One Health agenda : sustainable livelihoods, zoonotic disease and gender in NigeriaBadejo, Adedamola Folasade January 2017 (has links)
Livestock production is central to the livelihoods of millions of people in Nigeria, and indeed across the continent. Understanding how livestock based economies function and the issues that constrain them has long been an important task for actors interested in supporting rural development. In recent years, the One Health agenda has provided a new impetus for studying and tackling the interconnections between human, animal and environmental. Whilst this is welcome, it tends to be selective in its modus operandi of intersectoral collaboration as advocated. This new risk repeats the tendencies of earlier scholarship in understanding rural animal production systems as a vertical system. In particular, gender analysis of addressing the growing threats of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is lacking in One Health as evidenced in the findings from the study areas of Kachia Grazing Reserve and the Jos Plateau. There is thus a need to illustrate the importance of integrating gender equality into the One Health concept of programmes especially in pastoralist areas. Through the use of a qualitative approach of eliciting needed information by the use of a range of qualitative methods at the community and household levels, this thesis, based on three case studies provides substantial new empirical contributions to this debate. Specificially, chapter four, by exploring the strategies employed by the study population to cope with, as well as to build their resilience to the inadequacies of the Kachia Grazing Reserve, argues that these inadequacies affect gender, gender relations, and livelihoods. As a reinforcement to these assertions, chapter five explores the role of women self help groups in the KGR and argues that these self help groups could be used as instruments in propelling the One Health concept in pastoral areas like that of the KGR. Lastly, chapter six explores the effect of conflict and violence on gender, gender relations and livelihoods in the Jos Plateau and examines how timely and effective delivery of One Health could act as a conflict resolution in conflict and violence inflicted pastoralist areas of the Jos Plateau. This thesis, in a way, gives possible explanation to the reticence of gender in One Health. Thus, in recognition of the potentials of the One Health concept, and in considering the realities on ground and the importance of integrating gender equality in its programme planning and delivery, the analysis of data from the three case studies of this thesis brings into focus the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of gender analysis affects delivery of One Health programmes in local pastoralists communities.

The present thesis aims to use novel observations as to the behaviour of anaphoric 'one' when under modification in order to explore more acutely the structure of the nominal phrase. There has been decades of disagreement as to the syntactic nature of anaphoric 'one'. This work highlights novel observations about anaphoric 'one' and offers structural analyses for them. Anaphoric 'one' behaves in a markedly distinct way when modified by a prenominal modifier versus when it is modified by a postnominal modifier. Specifically the indefinite article, numerals, and certain quantifiers are able to be introduced into the structure of the noun phrase only when anaphoric 'one' is modified prenominally. In such cases that is modified postnominally the introduction of such material is not possible. Rather than appealing to rich featural specifications on syntactic objects by way of explanation this thesis offers an account based upon the structure of the nominal. An obligatory movement operation in the nominal projection is proposed, the result of which produces a structural configuration which limits extraction from the moved constituent. It is the two of these factors working together that produces the pattern of behaviour to be captured. Finally I present phenomena that can be found in Spanish, Dutch, Turkish, and Slovenian which can be easily captured using the structural analysis offered in this work. The suggestion being that all of these languages exhibit not only the same movement operation in the nominal projection, but the same limit on what may be extracted from the moved constituent.

Scottish culture and the First World War, 1914-1939Petrie, Ann January 2006 (has links)
The First World War was a key factor in the development of Scottish art and culture in the first half of the twentieth century. Yet historians concentrating on Scotland have been slow to recognise its potential as an area of research. This thesis aims to provide a broad-ranging perspective by exploring the responses to the war of seven of Scotland's leading cultural personalities, including the poet Christopher Murray Grieve, the dramatists, James Matthew Barrie and Osborne Henry Mavor, the painters Eric Harald Macbeth Robertson and William McCance, the architect Robert Stodart Lorimer and the aristocrat, the 8th Duke of Atholl. In addition to consideration of their personal experiences of the war, however, attention will be given to the varied and many cultural productions created by these men both during and in the aftermath of the First World War to assess the nature of the war's impact on Scottish culture. The Scottish Renaissance movement of the 1920s will be discussed in light of the fury and disillusionment felt by Grieve as a result of his active service in Salonika; the pervading influence of the war in the plays of Mavor and Barrie will be shown to owe much to their subjective impressions of the war, and the curtailment and containment of the careers of Robertson and McCance viewed in the context of their conscientious objection to military service. Finally, the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle will be attributed to the determination and passion imbued by the war in Lorimer and Atholl. In achieving these aims this thesis will demonstrate that the First World War should be held up as a central component in the history of Scottish art and society, and by dOing so hopes to widen the horizon of Scottish cultural studies beyond the current fixation with typicality within the United Kingdom in order to emphasise the range of Scottish cultures.
