The Apocalypse Narrative and the Internet: Divided Relationships in New Natures

Benadum, Brooks Scott 15 November 2016 (has links)
This project proposes that one factor of growing societal interest in the apocalypse narrative is rooted in these stories reflection on our new landscape of telecommunication flows embodied in the Internet. The apocalypse narrative has steadily been growing in popularity, and many academics have offered potential explanations. While other analyses predominately focus on the actual apocalyptic event itself as representative of various societal fears, this project aims to focus on aspects of how we adapt to being in the new apocalyptic landscape, and how this reflects on our own adaptation to being in the new landscape of the Internet. This project takes the work of Martin Heidegger as its primary theoretical lens in an examination of the popular television series The Walking Dead and the Internet streaming service Netflix. This project finds that both the apocalyptic landscape and the new landscape of the Internet throw us into decentered worlds where it is easy to be alienated from one another. Alleviation of our anxieties brought on by these strange landscapes lies in our recognition of being-towards-others in the world and engaging in acts of community building. However, a greater – more global – sense of community is frequently subverted by the way relationships are revealed by technology as divisive.

An Investigation of a Group of Third Graders' Pitch Matching Skills When Using Male Voice, Piano, and Resonator Bells as Melodic Models

Franks, Douglas Keith 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose was to measure any statistically significant differences in pitch-matching skills among three classes of third grade students when using either adult male voice, piano, or resonator bells as melodic models for rote instruction of classroom singing. Each class was randomly assigned one of the three melodic models for a ten week treatment phase. Results indicated no significant differences in pitch matching skills between any of the three groups. No significant differences in pitch matching skills were found according to gender of subjects or among class piano students and non-piano students. Findings indicated overall improvement in pitch matching skills of subjects from pre-test to post-test phase.

Contribution à l'étude de l'opposabilité / Contribution of the sudy of opposability

Plyer, Hugo 13 November 2015 (has links)
The notion of opposability is present in several areas of the legal system. In contract law, the doctrine appeals to the principle of third party's rights; in insurance law, the opposability of the transaction or judgment of the insurer; in property law, the matter has also spilled a lot of ink. This list cannot be considered exhaustive.Meanwhile, the unopposability prevails in areas like the registry of deeds, insolvency procedures or civil procedures that conclude a third party opposition.Despite their omnipresence, the concepts of opposability and unopposability have been scarcely identified by the doctrine, and their consequences are frequently uncertain. This study aims to prove that opposability is just the absence of unopposability. This can seem obvious at first sight, but the latest general study on the matter separates the concept of opposability from its antonym. For the first time we suggest a comprehensive study that includes both concepts in their various expressions. This perspective is successful, as it focuses on a unitary notion through the concept of distributivity.Opposability can then be defined as a legal technique that allows the distribution of the existence or the effects of a legal object based on the subjects, the periods of time or the territories.

Between defiance and compliance : the Lutheran Landesbischöfe of Hanover, Bavaria and Wûrttemberg in the Third Reich

Beech, Diana Jane January 2011 (has links)
While much is known about the polarities of the Protestant 'Church Struggle' (Kirchenkampf) in Nazi Germany, comparatively little is understood about the complex and collective dynamic of the Landesbischöfe of the only three 'intact' churches to escape incorporation into the Nazi-dominated Reichskirche. Traditionally, literature on the Kirchenkampf has taken a simplistic 'good-versus-evil' approach to the conflict and, arguably inspired by a moral need to come to terms with the less-than-glorious past of the German Protestant Church, has been unable to locate the Landesbischöfe of the 'intact' churches neatly within the conventional historiographical paradigm. By taking as its subject Landesbischöfe August Marahrens of Hanover, Hans Meiser of Bavaria and Theophil Wurm of Wûrttemberg, this dissertation examines the contribution to the Kirchenkampf of three men, who, to ensure the continued existence of German Protestantism in the Third Reich, were ultimately forced to find ways to respond to National Socialism that lay somewhere between the parameters of defiance and compliance. In order to demonstrate the collective contribution of the Landesbischöfe to maintaining the status of the German Protestant Church amidst heightening Nazi tyranny, this dissertation traces how, with reference to external personal, political and socio-cultural conditions, the bishops moved from a seeming commonality of cause to display increasingly varied responses to the manifestations of both political and ecclesiastical National Socialism. By tracing the development of their moderate but nonetheless disparate positions, this dissertation not only questions the traditional historiographical assumptions that Landesbischöfe Marahrens, Meiser and Wurm failed to resist National Socialism effectively or were, at best, collectively neutral in the conflict, but also seeks to delineate, for the first time, the crucial parts played by each of the Landesbischöfe during three distinct stages of the Kirchenkampf. In devoting each of its three central chapters to a particular phase in the conflict, this dissertation demonstrates how each of the Landesbischöfe in turn steered the 'intact' ensemble through the Third Reich as a modest yet effective force of opposition to Nazi despotism. Seen as a whole, this investigation ultimately demonstrates how, through their respective turns at national Church leadership, Landesbischöfe Marahrens, Meiser and Wurm did not undermine the wider Church resistance effort but, rather, saved the Church from subjugation to Nazism more effectively than would have been possible had they stood alone.

Carruthers, Clive Alexander January 2016 (has links)

A study of a selected group of third intermediate period mummies in the British Museum

Eladany, Abeer January 2012 (has links)
Mummies have been considered as 'biologic museums' as they display vital evidence and clues about the life and death of the ancient Egyptian population who lived thousands of years ago. They also hold the secrets of the evolution of disease. The Third Intermediate Period mummies represent the mummification technique at its best. The main aim of this research is to produce a scientific study of the Third Intermediate Period mummies in the British Museum. It attempts to answer some important questions and considers to what extent a detailed radiographic investigation of a group of mummies can provide evidence about disease processes, diet, mummification techniques, funerary and medical practices within that period. Non-invasive techniques were used during this study to investigate a group of seven mummies from the collection of the British Museum. The mummies are encased in cartonnage cases except one mummy which is inside a wooden coffin. The radiological methods (i.e. X-ray radiography and CT scanning) provided new information regarding the manufacturing of cartonnage cases during that period. The detailed radiographs showed aspects of the mummification techniques that were not reported during pervious investigations. A historical account of the Third Intermediate Period was given in chapter one while chapter two provides information regarding the mummification techniques used during this historical period. Chapter three gives information on previous radiological studies and chapter four gives detailed description and photographs of the selected mummies, the subjects of this investigation. Chapter five contains a full description of the methods used during this study and the results and discussions were presented in chapter six. A catalogue with detailed information is attached as an appendix to the thesis to present the physical anthropological data and radiological finds with regards to each mummy from this selected group.

The aim was to evaluate the effects of offering prior procedural and sensory information on anxiety responses of young people undergoing third molars extraction. The study included 83 patients, 14-24 years old, who needed extraction of at least a third molar in a dental session. The patients were selected and randomly assigned into two groups: Control and Experimental. The experimental design was subdivided into periods of times: Triage (Initial Interview, Pre-Surgical I and informative video for the experimental group); Extraction (Pre-Surgical II); and Suture (suture removal). The Initial Interview presented open and closed questions about habits, dental experience and drug use history. The Pre-Surgical I, Pre-Surgical II and Suture Removal times involved application of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The audiovisual resource about third molar extraction was presented only to the Experimental Group and immediately after watching the video, patients responded to the Questionnaire for informative video assessment. The data was obtained by interview, the scores were obtained by STAI and questionnaire for informative video assessment were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Chi-square, Fisher exact, mixed models for repeated measures (Proc Mixed in the SAS program) and Tukey-Kramer (p-value ? 0.05). The results showed that there was no change in anxiety scores on Triage and Extraction for the Experimental Group, ie, there was no increase in anxiety scores across the Extraction for patients who watched the informative video. This result is not observed in the Control Group, which showed an increase of anxiety scores on the day of extraction. It suggests possible effect of informative video to reduce anxiety in patients undergoing third molars extraction. Furthermore, it can be observed that the instrument fulfill their function to inform since patients report video contents in open questions. The tranquilizing effect of this preparatory procedure is emphasized because 90% of patients felt more relaxed or confident after the video display, as well as they liked to receive preoperative information and did a good evaluation. It can be concluded that the preoperative information, offered by an informative video, can lead to significant reduction of anxiety in patients undergoing third molars extraction. This type of procedure is effective in providing information and patients gave a positive evaluation of this preparatory procedure / Doutorado / Saude Coletiva / Doutora em Odontologia / 2011/23322-8 / FAPESP

O processo sucessório em associações produtivas no Brasil: estrutura, desafios e oportunidades / The succession process in productive associations in Brazil: structure, challenges and opportunities

Edileusa Godoi de Sousa 15 December 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the succession process in Brazilian social enterprises have been executed, focusing on productive social activism. The study identifies which factors limit and facilitate this process, based on the following aspects: Individual, Organizational and Environmental. The nature of this research is exploratory and descriptive and was developed in two complementary stages. In the first stage the chosen group consisted of 378 enterprises that were the subject of a survey to identify the productive associations. The survey was set up to identify associations which are productive and within them, the enterprises which are active and those which are going through a succession process. The disposition of the leaders in taking part in the survey was also taken into consideration. The second stage was composed of a sample of 32 enterprises in which their interaction in an Individual, Organizational and Environmental level when going through a succession process was analyzed, identifying what facilitates and what limits this succession process. To analyze the structure and main characteristics of the succession process, these were taken as the base according to the following guidelines: Individual dimension leadership roles, leadership abilities and leadership styles; Organizational dimension structure, planning, counseling, communication (transparency), control and evaluation; Environmental dimension stakeholders influence (community, suppliers, clients, partners) in the succession process. The end results suggest that the main characteristics of those productive associations analyzed here is the intertwining of political, economic and social dimensions. However, one of the major challenges for these associations is to create positive outcomes in a socio-economic and political environment where community resources are scarce, rather than sufficient to build and maintain a cooperative project. Regarding the succession process, the associations leaders showed an understanding about the importance of planning and managing their progress, but still had tools with lack of structure to do so. The associations also attribute importance to the participative management in the succession process as a way of reconciling internal and external expectations, however they do not have a structured system to manage this process. The succession processes in the surveyed associations are in a constructive phase, whilst dealing with their day to day demands, but still show clear improving necessities for a more effective planning and participative management in the process.
