Δικτυωμένα συστήματα ελέγχου : μία στοχαστική προσέγγιση / Networked control systems : a stochastic approach

Λούπος, Παντελεήμων 04 October 2011 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to discuss and present existing techniques that apply event-triggered sampling to linear system state estimation, and to evaluate how these methods affect the overall performance of the system. As already mentioned, sampling rate constraints arise in NCS due to the limited bandwidth available. This restriction on the number of samples clearly affects the mean square estimation distortion error, and the question is how we should choose the sampling instants in order to minimize it.

A/B-testing for web design: A comparative study of response times between MySQL and PostgreSQL : Implementation of a web based tool for design comparisons with stored images

Lindberg, Tobias January 2018 (has links)
Web development is a challenging task and it’s easy to neglect feedback from users in development stages. That’s why the aim is to create a tool which would help the communication between developers and users by using A/B-testing. The idea is to let developers release two choices containing images, which would be the intended design changes. By letting the users vote for the preferred option, they will be able to provide some feedback for the developers. Response times becomes a critical factor for the tool’s overall success. Therefore, this study compares MySQL and PostgreSQL through a technical experiment to see which database would be the better option regarding the image processing. The experiment indicated that PostgreSQL would the better alternative regarding the subject, as it had the most responsive processing of images. This prototype provides a good foundation for a potentially useful system that could be implemented in future work.

January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study is to identify IF the economic growth in Brazil over the long term has been somewhat restricted by the Balance of Payments. The research questions that guide this work can be expressed as follows: the economic growth of Brazil in the period marked between the years 1951 to 2008 is restricted by the Balance of Payments? To answer this question we work with the approach of external sector restricted growth proposed, among others, by Lima and Carvalho (2009). Regarding the statistical tests, we used the method of the Vector Error Correction (VEC). We conclude that for the period studied the rate of economic growth in Brazil was restricted by the external sector, confirming the theory about the approach of external sector restricted growth, in relations to the economic history of Brazil / Mestre

Brian O'Nolan's Multiple Selves: Flann O'Brien and Myles na gCopaleen and Addressing the National Culture of Ireland

Nejezchleb, Amy D. 01 May 2011 (has links)
Irish author Brian O'Nolan's (1911-1966) later career involves multi-media works that in a variety of ways challenge Ireland to be more open to the complications of modernity. These controversial works have too often been dismissed as pedestrian and unsophisticated, though they offer themselves as experiments in different media, involving technologies that were recent developments in Ireland. Looking at his later fiction, journalism, and television writings reveals that O'Nolan continued his commitment to complexity throughout his entire career. O'Nolan's experiments take many forms, including the fragmented identities of Flann O'Brien and Myles na gCopaleen, portraying an author who embraces modernity when many in the country advocated provincial lore. He is open to modernity because he seeks positions among Ireland's emerging modern and nascent provincial voices in multiple narratives. These multiple positions are located in verbal and visual forms, multiple personas, and multiple genres--including new media--where he crosses boundaries of artistic media by including visual representations in his written experiments published and broadcast in new media. I combine Cultural and New Modernist Studies in an approach that labels O'Nolan a "bad" modernist because his multi-media and multi-genre works are precise and premeditated experiments in cosmopolitan as well as regional modernity. Moreover, I contend this "bad" modernist's later works can be reexamined as one form of Ireland's modernist culture, helping to bridge the transition from colony to emerging global power. Chapter one starts with persona Flann O'Brien's last novel, Slattery's Sago Saga (1965-1966), which is an appropriate beginning because its multiple narratives are extended to a broader, transatlantic audience, that of America. The novel also adopts an ambivalent female character that reappears, almost simultaneously, as a straightforward, confident female voice in the multi-episode television series, Th'Oul Lad of Kilsalaher (1965). Since O'Brien's works can be troubled by misogynistic tendencies, studying a later novel that complicates preconceived patterns about women helps readdress criticisms of the writer. Two interchapters also depict O'Brien's diverse experiments and positions in both well-known and obscure locales, anticipating shifts in more refined writings. The first of these analyzes O'Brien's early experiments in visual form, such as cartoons in childhood and college endeavors and doodles in the unpublished, first manuscript of At Swim-Two-Birds. In chapter two, the Cruiskeen Lawn columns, written under the Myles persona, mark a new form of journalism that uses intersections of verbal monologue and found illustrations to form its jokes. This word and image debate is made humorous by old trade magazine illustrations being recycled as new etchings, and this compounds the literary forgery evident throughout O'Nolan's career. Additionally, Myles' new journalism can be considered public art because The Irish Times where the columns are circulated is a natural arena of debate. A second interchapter hints at O'Nolan's part in shaping public thinking while offering his talents for pay. These experimental sketches show the "bad" modernist in O'Nolan when he tries to sell his Myles identity to Irish businesses like the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes, Guinness, and Whiskey Distilleries as a viable brand (a satirist who combines visual material with current and historical events) in the commercial market, even when the archives remain ambiguous. Finally, chapter three focuses on Myles' writings in television, and it is in Th'Oul Lad of Kilasalaher that a confident, modern female voice first emerges in his writing career. I compare his early, full-length television plays, which are often formulaic and transferable to other modern nations, to the multi-episode series, O'Dea's Yer Man and Th'Oul Lad of Kilasalaher, in part to reveal his pioneering role in developing a new form of modernity for Ireland; that he wants them to remain open to independent ideas rather than forcing on them a prevalent and predominant form of modernism. In the epilogue, I compare O'Nolan's modernist experiments to Anne Enright's parallel and contemporary work The Wig My Father Wore (1995).

Emergency department visits for mental health: an examination of wait times to see a provider

Marsella, Sarah A. January 2014 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.H.P.) / BACKGROUND: Emergency department (ED) visits for psychiatric issues have grown at a disproportionately higher rate than other visits. This has been attributed to factors including severe cuts in mental health (MH) services and identified as a culprit in ED overcrowding. Little is known, however, about how mental health reason-for-visit (MHRFV) interacts with patient and hospital characteristics to affect wait times to see an ED provider. OBJECTIVE: To determine if wait time (WT) to see a provider at the ED differs for those presenting with MHRFV and how various patient and hospital-level characteristics interact to affect it. METHODS: Data were obtained from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) for visits to EDs throughout the United States. We examined data for patients ≥ 18 years of age who visited an ED in years 2009 and 2010. Patient weights were used to generate national estimates. Patients’ primary reasons-for-visit were used to identify the MH group for analysis and comparison to all other RFVs. Predictors of WT were chosen based on the Andersen Behavioral and ED overcrowding models. WTs were log-transformed for initial bivariate and final multivariate regression models to assure a more normal distribution. RESULTS: Mean WT was 56.5 and 55.8 minutes for MHRFV and all others respectively with a shared median of 31 minutes. As expected with our large sample (n = 47,831), all variables of interest were significantly associated with WT. Adjusting for patient and hospital level characteristics, a multivariate regression revealed that MHRFV prolonged WT by about 50%. After adjustment for independent variables, interactions with MHRFV were tested as the main outcomes of interest. Blacks with MHRFV had WTs 62% longer, patients age 41-64 31% longer, payer status of Medicare/Medicaid or no coverage had WTs about 24% and 14% longer than private insurance. Conversely, patients at government owned hospitals had WTs 145%, and non-profits 42%, lower than private hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first time that ED WT has been examined in this depth with a sample of patients presenting with MH issues. The results indicate that disparities are more pronounced in this subgroup of ED patients. / 2031-01-01

Minimizing Total Weighted Tardiness in a Two Staged Flexible Flow-shop with Batch Processing, Incompatible Job Families and Unequal Ready Times Using Time Window Decomposition

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This research is motivated by a deterministic scheduling problem that is fairly common in manufacturing environments, where there are certain processes that call for a machine working on multiple jobs at the same time. An example of such an environment is wafer fabrication in the semiconductor industry where some stages can be modeled as batch processes. There has been significant work done in the past in the field of a single stage of parallel machines which process jobs in batches. The primary motivation behind this research is to extend the research done in this area to a two-stage flow-shop where jobs arrive with unequal ready times and belong to incompatible job families with the goal of minimizing total weighted tardiness. As a first step to propose solutions, a mixed integer mathematical model is developed which tackles the problem at hand. The problem is NP-hard and thus the developed mathematical program can only solve problem instances of smaller sizes in a reasonable amount of time. The next step is to build heuristics which can provide feasible solutions in polynomial time for larger problem instances. The basic nature of the heuristics proposed is time window decomposition, where jobs within a moving time frame are considered for batching each time a machine becomes available on either stage. The Apparent Tardiness Cost (ATC) rule is used to build batches, and is modified to calculate ATC indices on a batch as well as a job level. An improvisation to the above heuristic is proposed, where the heuristic is run iteratively, each time assigning start times of jobs on the second stage as due dates for the jobs on the first stage. The underlying logic behind the iterative approach is to improve the way due dates are estimated for the first stage based on assigned due dates for jobs in the second stage. An important study carried out as part of this research is to analyze the bottleneck stage in terms of its location and how it affects the performance measure. Extensive experimentation is carried out to test how the quality of the solution varies when input parameters are varied between high and low values. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Schätzung maximaler Wartezeiten mittels Extremwertverteilung an lichtsignalgesteuerten Knotenpunkten

Drache, Lisa 04 July 2018 (has links) (PDF)

Shithole Countries: An Analysis of News Coverage in the U.S.

Olubela, Murewa O. 22 March 2018 (has links)
This research paper studied the first two weeks after President Donald Trump allegedly called African countries “shithole countries” in a bi-partisan meeting on immigration. It explored the frames and emerging themes used by the media when covering the incident and the surrounding issues. Using the framing theory as a theoretical framework, the study examined the six identified news frames through qualitative content analysis. The six frames used in the coverage of the “shithole countries” incident are racial, conflict, consequences, morality, human interest, and policy. The study examined articles from four news sources that lean liberal, conservative, central-liberal, and central conservative. The study indicated that the four news sources all used five of the six frames, as the Wall Street Journal did not use the morality frame at all. The most used frame was the human interest frame, followed by conflict and consequences. The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal used the conflict frame the most. And CNN and FOX used the consequences frame the most.

Veber, Andréia January 2009 (has links)
This research aimed at to investigate the process of inserting music as a curriculum subject in a full-time public school. More specifically, it aimed at: to examine the conceptions of the school community’s members about the practices of school music education; to identify the different musical and musical educational practices developed in/by the school; to understand the contributions of music teaching to the development of an integrated curriculum; and to understand the relationships between music teaching and the school project of holistic education. A qualitative case study with a public state school of the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil was carried out. This school is one of schools that are part of the Integrated Public School Project (EPI), in Santa Catarina. Data were collected through observation, semistructured interviews and analysis of written documents. Data analysis was developed by means of establishing a set of categories related to the insertion of music subject in the school curriculum, focusing the occupation of the school “space” and the constitution the “place” of music at school, as well as the schooling process of music. The theoretical framework was constituted by the concept of “school times” elaborated by Gimeno Sacristán (2008), as well as by concepts of full-time education, holistic education and integrated curriculum. Results show that, by analyzing the process of inserting music as a curriculum subject from the perspective of the “school times”, it was possible to understand how happened the confirmation of music in the curriculum of the school, contributing to the conquest of the rightful place of music as a school subject.
