The Relationship among Social Connectedness, Meaning in Life, and Wellness for Adult Women in Levinson's Mid-Life Transition StageSmithson, Karin L. 11 August 2011 (has links)
While developmental research on the period of midlife has received increased attention in the literature, limited focus has been paid to the transitional stage into midlife, particularly for women. In this study, 286 women between the ages of 38 - 47 years completed online surveys comprised of a demographic questionnaire, the Social Connectedness Scale – Revised (SCS-R; Lee, Draper, & Lee, 2001), the Life Regard Index – Revised (LRI-R; Debats, 1998), and the Five Factor Wellness Inventory – Adult (FFWel-A; Myers & Sweeney, 1999). Participants were recruited through local community-based organizations and snowballing efforts. Participants resided in a major southern metropolitan city. Results from this study indicate that wellness was significantly higher for women who had advanced degrees, higher income levels, and were in a parenting role. Full-time employment and higher education levels were significantly related to higher feelings of meaning in life for women, but being in a parenting role was not linked to higher meaning in life. Implications for counseling women in the Mid-Life Transition Stage are explored and directions for future research are discussed.

Man is probably the only alive being on the Earth who has a lot of questions. Why was I born? Why will I die? What do I live for? Where did I come from? Who am I?
Sooner or later each human being has to find his own way of life, make a decision and accept full responsibility for it. It’s not easy.
However, there are many people who never think about the importance of their lives. Those people are just a small part of our society. We can be proud that our world is full of many intelligent, bright and wise people who care not only about themselves, but about their children, their future and other people around them. They are masters of their lives and destinies. Those people are spiritually strong and not afraid to make mistakes and admit them. They are strong personalities.
This master thesis was prepared according to the empiric research made during 2004-2005 years. A survey of 300 adolescents from three different Shiauliai schools was carried out to find out what they think about the meaning of their lives and find out their opinion about values.
The results of the research revealed that:
• Instrumental values such as communication and self evaluation are the most important ones among the teenagers. Personal life values take the first place among terminal values.
• The understanding about the life meaning among the pupils of senior forms is intermediate (71,33%).

Spiritual Wellness as a Predictor for Moral Injury in Combat VeteransZappalla, Steve 01 January 2018 (has links)
Many combat veterans face difficulties coping with their personal lives, relationships, and families when they leave the service and return to civilian life. Most studies examining the effects of combat on veterans focus on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as a collection of related consequences. Interest in the term moral injury of military veterans as a related mental health construct has grown. Researchers have investigated the effects of spiritual wellness of combat veterans. However, there is a paucity of counseling literature on the relationship between spiritual wellness and moral injury when combat veterans return to civilian life. Investigating the relationship between spiritual wellness and moral injury as based in existential theory could offer insights to improve quality of life of veterans, families, and society. This study examined the connection between spiritual wellness and moral injury among combat veterans using a quantitative survey with a cross-sectional, correlational analysis and incorporating demographic variables. Results showed that the relationship of spiritual wellness on moral injury is statistically significant. Participants with low spiritual well-being were likely to have an elevated level of moral injury. Those with strong levels of life meaning and purpose were less likely to experience moral injury. These findings can be used to help combat veterans heal from the wounds of war. Clinical interventions associated with life meaning and purpose could enable successful reintegration of combat veterans into society. Results could be used to identify and test specific treatment options. Outcomes could also be used to explore the relationship of combat veterans to other professions subject to moral injury and further explore the relationship of moral injury to PTSD.

In the other part of this work we have described basic concepts connected with the topic meaning of life and philosophical context with emphasis on Fridrich Nietszche's and Albert Camus's work and psychology of Viktor Frankl. The main goal of this work is to find if there is a way out in Yalom's existential analysis in confrontation with postmodern nihilism and feeling of meaningless of human life. Объектом исследования явилась академическая прокрастинация. Предметом исследования стала связь академической прокрастинации со смысложизненными ориентациями и экзистенциальной исполненностью у студентов-психологов. Магистерская диссертация состоит из введения, двух глав, заключения, списка литературы (105 источников) и приложения. Объем магистерской диссертации 81 страница, на которых размещены 11 таблиц и 1 рисунок. Во введении раскрывается актуальность проблемы исследования, разработанность проблематики, ставятся цель и задачи исследования, определяются объект и предмет исследования, формулируются основная и дополнительные гипотезы, указываются методы и эмпирическая база, а также этапы проведения исследования, научная новизна, теоретическая и практическая значимость работы. Первая глава включает в себя обзор зарубежной и отечественной научной литературы по феномену прокрастинации, приведены различные трактовки данного термина, представлено изучение прокрастинации как в рамках различных психологических концепций, так и в современных исследованиях. Показана классификация прокрастинации и рассмотрена, одна из наиболее распространённых её форм, академическая прокрастинация. Выводы по первой главе представляют собой итоги по изучению теоретического материала. Во второй главе проанализированы и проинтерпретированы результаты эмпирического исследования связи академической прокрастинации со смысложизненными ориентациями у студентов-психологов. В главе представлен корреляционный, факторный и регрессионный анализ результатов исследования. Выводы по второй главе включают в себя основные результаты эмпирического исследования. В заключении в обобщенном виде изложены результаты теоретической и эмпирической частей работы, выводы по выдвинутым гипотезам, а также описаны возможные перспективы дальнейшей разработки данной проблематики. / The object of the research was academic procrastination. The subject of the study was the connection between academic procrastination and life-meaning orientations and existential fulfillment in psychology students. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of references (105 sources) and an appendix. The volume of the master's thesis is 81 pages, which contain 11 tables and 1 figure. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research problem, the elaboration of the problematics, the goal and objectives of the research are set, the object and subject of the research are determined, the main and additional hypotheses are formulated, the methods and empirical base are indicated, as well as the stages of the research, scientific novelty, theoretical and practical significance of the work. The first chapter includes a review of foreign and domestic scientific literature on the phenomenon of procrastination, various interpretations of this term are given, the study of procrastination is presented both within the framework of various psychological concepts and in modern research. The classification of procrastination is shown and considered, one of its most common forms, academic procrastination. Conclusions for the first chapter represent the results of the study of theoretical material. The second chapter analyzes and interprets the results of an empirical study of the relationship between academic procrastination and life-meaning orientations in psychology students. The chapter presents the correlation, factorial and regression analysis of the research results. The conclusions of the second chapter include the main findings of the empirical study.
In the conclusion, in a generalized form, the results of the theoretical and empirical parts of the work, conclusions on the hypotheses put forward, and possible prospects for the further development of this problem are described.

Death education in secondary schools in the United States of America : a religious perspectiveRuffin, Ro Turner 09 1900 (has links)
This work was undertaken with a view to developing a textbook for United
States secondary schools on the subject of death and dying through a religious lens.
The purpose of this work is to provide high school teens with the means of coping
with loss and a foundation for crafting their own meaning of life and death.
Taking a close look at death attitudes among young people in the United
States, as well as high school faculty and staff for the purpose of determining whether
or not death education can be provided for public high school students, the work starts
from the premise that said death education, using a religious model, should be
provided for teenagers because the religious model provides the necessary elements of
idea, ritual, and community, so necessary for building a world-view. Research was
conducted in the form of survey and historical review to determine the efficacy of the
proposed course of study.
Upon analysis of the available information on death education history and
course offering, as well as analysis of the survey results, the conclusion was reached
that the provision of death education in the nation‟s public high schools would go a
long way to reducing death anxiety amongst United States teenagers, and also give the
adolescents a model for creating their own sense of meaning for all of life that
