Subjective perceptions of value : A qualitative case study using informal evaluation to measure the value of an Information SystemLoggert, Josefin, Åhlin, Mairon January 2015 (has links)
The debate on how to measure the value of IT is an ongoing debate within the IT evaluation research. Research about the value of IT tends to focus on formal aspects and ignore informal aspects such as the subjective perceptions of individuals and researchers acknowledge a lack of informal evaluation methods used in practice. This study aims to answer two research questions: How can informal value of IS be evaluated? and What are the benefits and drawbacks of relying on informal value when assessing IS? To answer these questions a qualitative case study have been conducted using the DeLone & McLean IS Success Model as a theoretical framework. The results show that using the model was successful however we argue that important aspects were missing in the model. The benefits of relying on informal value showed to be the possibilities of discovering aspects of value that are not visible in formal evaluation. The drawbacks of performing an informal evaluation are that they are complicated and time-consuming and do not promise useful results.

Value Creation from IT Systems Integration : A Benefits, Openness and Price Model PerspectiveBrege, Harald, Hampusson, Petter January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is aimed at finding out how integration of IT systems creates value for companies and is conducted as a qualitative case study, where six companies are interviewed about their integration solutions. The interviewees were five CIOs and one Managing Director. Four of the companies interviewed have genuine Application Integration solutions, where a middleware platform is the hub of the integration system, while the remaining two used solutions based around a system of point-to-point integrations. The value of an integration solution will be considered a combination of the benefits an integration solution provides, openness aspects, and the price models used to pay for the system. Value is defined as what the company gains, in monetary terms, in exchange for what it pays for an offering (Anderson, Kumar, & Narus, 2007). This definition further defines the attractiveness of an offering as the value minus the price. When discussing the value of an IT system, it is important to consider the difference between the potential value, which is the maximum the system can deliver with an ideal environment and usage, and the realised value, which is some fraction of the potential value that a company actually gains, of the system (Davern & Kauffman, 2000; Smith & Nagle, 2005). Affecting the realisation of potential value are certain factors, called conversion contingencies, which are things like preparation of implementation projects or efforts at using all aspects of a system. Benefits are analysed according to a framework that divides IT systems benefits into five categories: operational, managerial, strategic, IT infrastructure, and organisational benefits (Shang & Seddon, 2000). These categories are focused around, respectively, productivity gains, enhanced planning capabilities, new strategic capabilities, better IT administration, and process improvements. We conclude that most companies gain several large benefits in the operational and managerial types, while the other three types have fewer reported benefits. We conclude that there seems to be quite a lot of unrealised potential value in the integration solutions, if the view of the potential of integration from the technological side is used. We also conclude that companies in certain environments and with more complex organisational structures seem to have a larger value potential than others, meaning they have more to potentially gain from an integration solution. For openness, five aspects of open source software are studied: lock-in, cost, security, flexibility/modifiability, and community. These aspects are mainly derived from literature on open source. The first conclusion we make regarding openness is that most of the CIOs seems not to be fully aware of what the term truly entails. Companies’ opinions regarding open source can be seen on a range between two extremes: those who want to modify or develop software and those who only want to use standard systems. The former category has more to gain from the aspects of cost and modifiability than the latter, but both categories can gain from the lock-in, security, and community aspects. The combination of factors that creates the price of an offering can be described as a price model. To study the value of price models of integration solutions, the SBIFT model (Iveroth, et al., 2013) is used, where the price model is divided into five dimensions, scope, base, influence, formula and temporal rights. None of the interviewed companies were satisfied with the alternatives for price models currently on the market. It was concluded that the dissatisfaction mostly stemmed from the facts that the companies had little opportunity to affect the price model, meaning they could not adapt it to better fit their internal conditions, the complexity of the license agreements, and that it was hard to get vendors to cite a price for a system. Price models that would be more attractive are e.g. models with a larger variable part, like transaction-based ones, or models that affect the time scale of the contract, even though no single model seemed more attractive to all companies.

The Role of Information Technology Organizational Design in Firms' Ability to InnovateHalimi, Hassan S. 01 January 2015 (has links)
Information technology (IT) organizations have become an integral part of many firms, with increasing strategic significance. Consequently, investments in IT represent a significant percentage of a firm's expenditure. Despite the investment, the business value of IT has been difficult to quantify, creating uncertainty about a firm's investments in IT innovation. The purpose of this nonexperimental study was to examine relationships between a firm's innovativeness and 3 IT organizational design factors: knowledge creation, dynamic capabilities, and communication structures. The research questions addressed the relationships between a firm's ability to innovate and specific design elements of the IT organization. The study was based on Nonaka's dynamic theory of organizational knowledge creation, Schumpeter's industrial market structure, and Wernerfelt's resource-based view of the firm. Data were collected from an online survey with 115 employees of firms that depend on IT to deliver their products or services. Pearson product-moment correlational analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between the IT organizational design factors and a firm's ability to innovate. The implications for positive social change stemming from this study affect managers of firms that rely on IT to deliver products or services. The findings suggest that the design of the IT organization influences the performance of the firm through cost reduction and its sustainability through innovation, both of which lead to community economic empowerment thus benefiting the general public.

The value of Information Technology (IT) to business, from the perspective of individual IT resources, has shown mixed results in the literature. Furthermore, this value has been evaluated at the firm level, through aggregate measures of performance such as profitability, market share and efficiency. As an alternative to such perspective, this research adopts the concept of IT Capabilities as a set of resources in use by organizations. Likewise, other constructs at lower levels than the Firm Performance are considered – namely Information Quality (IQ) and at the Process level Performance. So, alternatively to approaches about the value of IT, this research aims to identify the value of IT Capabilities and theirs impacts on the Information Quality and on the Performance, at the Processes and the Firm levels. The test of research’s hypothesis is preceded by interviews with IT specialists (managers) in order to validate the research model. Additionally, we proceeded to the translation of the variables for the survey. Information Systems experts (researchers) also participated in the evaluation of the variables to the measurement model, judging its presence or deletion. Surveys Pre-test and Pilot Study were conducted with a view to refining the data collection instrument and the measurement model, respectively. The full survey was answered by 150 IT’s and business’s managers in large Brazilian organizations. Data were analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling in order to validate the measurement model and testing hypotheses of the research model. For the test of the structural model in the full survey, it was found that the Internal IT Capabilities are associated with the level of Quality of Information and at the Process Level Performance. The External IT Capabilities, on the other hand, do not impact positively on IQ, neither on the performance levels (Processes and Firm). One model of mediation for Process level Performance was tested in the full survey. It was found full mediation, supporting the hypothesis that Internal IT Capabilities exert impact on the performance at the Firm level, mediated by business processes. The results are supported by researches that argue value of IT is captured direct and firstly at the Processes level. The contributions, limitations and recommendations of the research are contained in the end of the thesis.
