Shoplifting as consumer misbehaviour : an exploratory study of shoplifting applying a consumer behaviour approach

Tonglet, Michele January 1999 (has links)
This thesis is an exploratory, quantitative study, concerned with investigating shoplifting as a form of consumer behaviour. The theory of planned behaviour (Ajzen, 1991), a theory used in consumer research, is applied to situational crime prevention theory, in order to investigate the factors which facilitate or inhibit customer theft. The data were collected by means of two questionnaires. The first questionnaire was completed by 417 shoppers using the shopping centre of Northampton, 32% of whom admitted to shoplifting behaviour, with 7% having shoplifted in the previous 12 months. The second questionnaire was completed by 444 Northampton school students, 51% of whom admitted to shoplifting, with 18% having shoplifted in the previous 12 months. Analysis of the findings indicates that for the shoplifters in this study, shoplifting is a rational crime in that the financial benefits from shoplifting are perceived to outweigh the risks and costs of being caught. Their shoplifting behaviour is facilitated by their lack of moral concerns about shoplifting, their positive attitudes to the behaviour, and peer influence. In comparison, the non-shoplifters were inhibited by their anti-shoplifting attitudes, their strong moral views about shoplifting, social pressure not to engage in the behaviour, and the shoplifting prevention strategies of retailers.

Trestný čin krádeže podle § 205 Trestního zákoníku / The crime of theft under s. 205 of the Criminal Code

Šušák, Michal January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the offence of theft, as the typical representative of all the offences against property. The reason for my research is to offer a comprehensive view to this difficult issue. My study is composed of four main chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of the topic. Chapter one is introductory and defines basic goals and a content of the text. This chapter also includes some considerations about the theft and about the thesis itself. Chapter two attempts to illustrate a historical introduction of the topic. It is subdivided into three main parts. The first part describes the oldest references about a theft in the history, the second part analyzes a development in the roman law and the third part is about the notion of the theft as it went through changes throughout Czech law history. Chapter three examines relevant Czech legislation. It is subdivided in four main parts. There are the nature of the offences against property and the legal formulations of offence of theft in current Act No. 40/2009 and in previous Act No. 140/1961 introduced in the first and second part of this chapter. The third part focuses on problems which followed the coming into force of the current law, such as complications caused by a new formulation of the theft and its consequences,...

Development for the Enterprise Crisis Management and Module in Early Warning

Chiu, Li-wen 07 July 2010 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to present the outcomes of the cargo theft, for example the cost of goods replacement, the crisis of fracturing material and the reputation of the enterprise. The hotspots where occur the heist of cargo theft are truck yards, hubs for commercial fright carriers and port cities. This study is based on the in-depth interview and the questionnaire and through the establishment of the standard operation procedures to analyze the operating situation of the container and understand the content and characteristic of the management. We can also figure out external and internal factor to control efficiently the vehicle dispatching and other potential crisis. By instituting the crisis prevention and alarm system and combining a complete organization to control the crisis in the shortest time and reduce the loss of goods, advance the operating rate, and most important, to lower the cargo theft opportunity. Risk management is an important issue of the corporate governance. To recover the reputation and build up the mutual confidence, we have to start developing strict standard operating procedures. Through case study of crisis management which happened in an enterprise, in order to reduce the chances of crisis, we have to understand when the crisis happened? How to deal with the crisis? How to avoid the crisis?

Diffusion of the Texas Cooperative Extension's horse theft awareness and prevention initiative

Swaim, Pattrick Lee, Jr. 12 April 2006 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to identify the Horse Theft Awareness and Prevention Initiative (HTAPI) participants and the theft prevention practices used in Texas. The secondary purpose was to evaluate the educational effectiveness of the HTAPI on the first three of Kirkpatrick’s levels, namely learner satisfaction, knowledge acquired, and change in behavior. The third purpose was to examine relationships between the rate of adoption of HTAPI recommended practices and the following demographic variables: gender, age, equine discipline, number of horses owned, and size of investment in the equine business. Survey instruments were used to gather data. Due to sampling constraints, the Solomon four step research design method was modified by removing one group following Seger’s (1998). The sample groups consisted of a pre/only test group, pre/post test group, post/only test group minus the control pre/post test group. The pre/only sample group data was collected in Denton and Montgomery Counties and yielded 56 usable instruments. Using Dillman’s (2000) procedures, data from participants of the HTAPI programs were collected using two mailed survey instruments. One hundred ninety two participants of the 2004 Mare Foal, Basic Horse Management 101, and the Performance Horse workshops were mailed a post/only instrument; 96 were returned for a 49% response rate. Thirty two pre-test instruments were administered in Hopkins and Polk County and thirty days later these participants were mailed a post/only instrument. A response rate of 66% and 63% in the respective sample groups. The sample population can be described as mainly women (68.3%) 43 years of age who owned 7.3 horses each. The average investment in horses totaled $31,658. The most frequently owned breed was the Quarter Horse (f=133), and the most frequently listed discipline was for breeding purposes (f=121). There were no relationships detected between gender or age and theft prevention practices or innovativeness. Positive relationships were found between the breeds of horses owned and the type of permanent identification of horses and the theft prevention practices used. Additionally, positive relationships were detected between breeding and riding discipline of horses, the types of permanent identification, the theft prevention practices used, and owner innovativeness.

NewsFerret : supporting identity risk identification and analysis through text mining of news stories

Golden, Ryan Christian 18 December 2013 (has links)
Individuals, organizations, and devices are now interconnected to an unprecedented degree. This has forced identity risk analysts to redefine what “identity” means in such a context, and to explore new techniques for analyzing an ever expanding threat context. Major hurdles to modeling in this field include the inherent lack of publicly available data due to privacy and safety concerns, as well as the unstructured nature of incident reports. To address this, this report develops a system for strengthening an identity risk model using the text mining of news stories. The system—called NewsFerret—collects and analyzes news stories on the topic of identity theft, establishes semantic relatedness measures between identity concept pairs, and supports analysis of those measures through reports, visualizations, and relevant news stories. Evaluating the resulting analytical models shows where the system is effective in assisting the risk analyst to expand and validate identity risk models. / text

An Evaluation of Winnipeg's Electronic Monitoring Pilot Project for Youth Auto Theft Offenders

Pearson, Ashley 09 July 2012 (has links)
In 2008, the Manitoba government implemented an electronic monitoring (EM) project for high-risk automobile theft offenders. To evaluate this program, youth in the program were matched with other high-risk auto theft offenders who had not been put on EM. Dimensions including characteristics, daily contacts and criminal histories were examined between groups. Interviews were also conducted with offenders who had been on EM and with program staff and stakeholders. The results of the evaluation indicated a small change in criminal history for the EM group for auto theft, technical and combined offenses. Since the Winnipeg Auto Theft Suppression Strategy (WATSS) began in 2005, there has been a decrease of approximately 11,000 auto thefts. Notably, only a very small part of this number could be attributed to the EM program. Electronic monitoring as an intervention can be a complementary program when offered in accompaniment with other WATSS and Manitoba Youth Correctional Services (MYCS) programs.
