A finite volume method for the analysis of the thermo-flow field of a solar chimney collector

Thesis (MEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the implementation of the finite volume numerical method applicable to non-orthogonal control volumes and the application of the method to calculate the thermo-flow field within the collector area of a solar chimney power generating plant. The discretisation of the governing equations for the transient, Newtonian, incompressible and turbulent fluid flow, including heat transfer, is presented for a non-orthogonal coordinate frame. The standard k - E turbulence model, modified to include rough surfaces, is included and evaluated in the method. An implicit solution procedure (SIP-semi implicit procedure) as an alternative to a direct solution procedure for the calculation of the flow field on nonstaggered grids is investigated, presented and evaluated in this study. The Rhie and Chow interpolation practice was employed with the pressurecorrection equation to eliminate the presence of pressure oscillations on nonstaggered grids. The computer code for the solution of the three-dimensional thermo-flow fields is developed in FORTRAN 77. The code is evaluated against simple test cases for which analytical and experimental results exist. It is also applied to the analysis of the thermo-flow field of the air flow through a radial solar collector. The development of a dynamic engine-testing facility

Many advances have been made in the design, research and development of the internal combustion engine and technological progress made in the integrated-circuit and computer industry has resulted in the availability of reliable low-cost electronic components. These components have, over time, been incorporated into the very hearts of engines, thereby allowing for the accurate control of engine functions and processes to an extent that was previously impossible. Parallel to these developments is the growing concern for the environment and the realisation that resources are being consumed at ever-increasing rates. This has placed vehicle manufacturers under continual pressure to optimise their engines, not only for fuel efficiency, but also to reduce harmful emissions while continuing to deliver better performance and drivability characteristics. At the same time, engine testing equipment and facilities have had to keep abreast with these advances and this has required the development of more sophisticated testing facilities. One such facility is the dynamic engine test-bed. Among other features, this facility has the ability to subject test-bed mounted engines to loads similar to what would be experienced in a vehicle on the road. This approach allows for the optimisation of engine components and performance under more realistic conditions, yielding results far superior to those obtainable using more conventional steady-state testing and development procedures. This document discusses the development of such a dynamic engine test-bed at the Centre for Automotive Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. The project was initiated by conducting a literature survey to establish the current state of technology in the field. The dynamic test-bed was developed around an existing direct-current electric motor and industrial speed controller configured in a regenerative manner. This setup enabled the unit to both absorb and deliver power, essential for the simulation of vehicle dynamics. Great care was taken to ensure that signals obtained from the test-bed were accurate and useful for further computer manipulation. Anti-aliasing filters were designed and manufactured to guarantee that signals could not be misinterpreted due to sampling effects. A computer-implemented vehicle model was developed to simulate, in real-time, vehicle response to torque developed by the engine on the test stand. The model included a manual transmission, clutch and a rigid drive-shaft. Driver input (accelerator, brake, clutch and gear selection) was by means of a set of pedals and hand-held gear selector switches. Various vehicle speed control strategies were investigated and recommendations made regarding their possible future implementation. System evaluation was accomplished by the simulated acceleration of a large truck. The simulations indicated that repeatable results could be obtained from the system. The system was also found to be adequately sensitive to reflect the effect of subtle changes made to engine parameters on vehicle acceleration. It was concluded that the dynamic engine test-bed did indeed offer the capability to conduct research and testing not previously available in South Africa. Finally, recommendations were made for the future improvement and expansion of the system's performance and capabilities. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die laaste twee dekades het baie veranderinge in die outomobiel industrie megebring. Groot vooruitgang is gemaak in die ontwerp, navorsing en ontwikkeling van die binnebrand enjin, terwyl tegnologiese vooruitgang in die geïntegreerde-stroombaan en rekenaar industrië betroubare elektroniese komponente teen lae koste beskikbaar gemaak het. Hierdie komponente is mettertyd in enjins geïnkorporeer en het die akkurate beheer van enjin funksies en prosesse moontlik gemaak. Saam met hierdie ontwikkeling, is daar toenemende kommer oor die omgewing en 'n bewuswording dat hulpbronne verbruik word teen 'n groeinde tempo. Die projek is geïnisieer deur 'n literatuurstudie te doen om die huidige stand van tegnologie in die gebied vas te stel. Die dinamiese enjintoetsbank is ontwikkel rondom 'n bestaande gelykstroom-motor en industriële spoed beheerder wat in 'n regeneratiewe konfigurasie opgestel is. Daar is ook bevind dat die sisteem sensitief genoeg was om subtiele veranderinge aan enjinparameters in die resultate te weerspieël. Die gevolgtrekking is gemaak dat die dinamiese enjin toetsbank inderdaad die vermoëns gebied het om ontwikkeling en toetswerk te doen wat nie voorheen in Suid-Afrika moontlik was nie. Voorstelle is laastens gemaak aangaande die toekomstige verbetering en uitbreiding van die sisteem se vermoëns.

Control of reconfigurable assembly system

The assembly system consists of a pallet magazine, a feeding system, an inspection and removal system, a welding system and a conveyor. The aim of the work is to compare PC and PLC as controllers, as well as to compare two different approaches to reconfigurable control. The control system of the pallet magazine was developed using a PC and a PLC. The PC control was programmed using Visual C#, while the PLC was programmed in Ladder Logic using Siemens S-300 STEP7. The two controllers were compared based on the attributes that measure the quality of a controller's software, which include its capability, availability, usability and adaptability. The approaches to reconfigurable control considered were the agent-based methodology and the IEC 61499 distributed control methodology, both of which were applied to the feeding system. The agent-based control system was implemented using the JADE agent platform, while the IEC 61499 distributed control system was implemented using the FBDK software kit. These two methods were compared based on the characteristics of a reconfigurable system, which include the system's modularity, integrability, convertibility, diagnosability, customization and scalability. The result obtained in comparing the PC to the PLC shows that the PLC performs better in terms of capability, availability and usability, while the PC performs better in terms of adaptability. Also, the result of the comparison between the agent-based control system and the IEC 61499 distributed control system shows that the agent-based control system performs better in terms of integrability, diagnosability and scalability, while the IEC 61499 distributed control system performs better in terms of modularity and customization. They are, however, on a par in terms of convertibility. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie werk beskou die beheer van herkonfigureerbare monteringstelsels met 'n sweismonteringstelsel as gevallestudie. Die monteringstelsel bestaan uit 'n paletmagasyn, 'n voerstelsel, 'n inspeksie-en- verwyderingstelsel, 'n sweisstelsel en 'n voerband. Die mikpunt van die werk is om persoonlike rekenaars (PCs) en programmeerbare-logikabeheerders (PLCs) as beheerders te vergelyk, asook om twee verskillende benaderings tot herkonfigureerbare beheer te vergelyk. Die beheerstelsel van die paletmagasyn is ontwikkel met 'n PC en 'n PLC. Die PC-beheer is in Visual C# geprogrammeer, terwyl die PLC in leerlogika met Siemens S-300 STEP7 geprogrammeer is. Die twee beheerders is vergelyk in terme van die eienskappe wat die kwaliteit van 'n beheerder se sagteware meet en sluit in vermoë, beskikbaarheid, bruikbaarheid en aanpasbaarheid. An experimental cost model for composite parts using vacuum assisted resin transfer moulding (VARTM)

Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Vacuum assisted resin transfer moulding (VARTM) belongs to the category of resin infusion techniques that use lower than atmospheric pressure to infiltrate a reinforced cavity. This technique has various advantages; however, manufacturing costs can be relatively high due to more difficult shapes fabricated and a lack of knowledge regarding cost driving factors. The objective of this study was to develop a cost model for composite parts. Such a model allows the estimation of manufacturing costs of shapes of different geometries. Therefore, it provides a comparison to alternative manufacturing techniques, such as metal forming or composite spray lay-up and helps to avoid unnecessarily expensive design features. The proposal was made to split complex shaped composite parts into individual basic shapes, which are further investigated here. For the basic shapes, an experimental approach was used where the manufacturing times of each process step are measured and then statistically analysed. Infusion simulation software was used to obtain additional filling times to complete the design of experiments. This method allows the estimation of manufacturing times of composite parts with different geometries. The manufacturing times were validated to that of a complex shaped industrial part, with reasonable results. Finally, a flexible cost model was developed to compare different manufacturing techniques and to estimate the manufacturing costs. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Vakuumgesteunde harsinspuitingsgietwerk (VARTM) behoort tot die kategorie harsinspuitingstegnieke wat laer-as-atmosferiese druk gebruik om ʼn versterkte holte binne te dring. Hierdie tegniek hou verskeie voordele in. Tog kan vervaardigingskoste betreklik hoog wees wanneer dit by ingewikkelder vorms en ʼn gebrek aan kennis met betrekking tot kostesnellers kom. Die doelwit van hierdie studie was om ʼn kostemodel vir saamgestelde onderdele te ontwikkel. Die model maak voorsiening vir die raming van die vervaardigingskoste vir verskillende afmetings. Sodoende bied dit ʼn vergelyking met alternatiewe tegnieke, en help voorkom onnodig duur ontwerpkenmerke. Daar is voorgestel dat dele met ingewikkelde vorms in individuele basiese vorms verdeel word, wat dan hier verder ondersoek word. Vir die basiese vorms word ʼn eksperimentele benadering gebruik waar die vervaardigingstye in elke prosesstap gemeet en statisties ontleed word. Voorts word inspuitingsimulasiesagteware gebruik om komplementêre inspuitingstye te bepaal ten einde die eksperimentele ontwerp te voltooi. Hierdie metode maak dit ook moontlik om die vervaardigingstye vir saamgestelde materiaal onderdele van verskillende afmetings te raam. Die vervaardigingstye word dan bevestig aan die hand van dié van ʼn kompleks gevormde industriële onderdeel, met redelike resultate. Uiteindelik word ʼn buigsame kostemodel ontwikkel om verskillende vervaardigingstegnieke te vergelyk en die vervaardigingskoste te raam.

Inside-pipe heat transfer coefficient characterisation of a one third height scale model of a natural circulation loop suitable for a reactor cavity cooling system of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor

Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The feasibility of a closed loop thermosyphon for the Reactor Cavity Cooling System of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor has been the subject of many research projects. Difficulties identified by previous studies include the hypothetical inaccuracies of heat transfer coefficient correlations available in literature. The aim of the research presented here is to develop inside-pipe heat transfer correlations that are specific to the current design of the RCCS. In order to achieve this, a literature review is performed which identifies reactors which employ closed loop thermosyphons and natural circulation. The literature review also explains the general one-dimensional two-fluid conservation equations that form the basis for numerical modelling of natural circulation loops. The literature review lastly discusses available heat transfer coefficient correlations with the aim of identifying over which ranges and under which circumstances these correlations are considered accurate. The review includes correlations commonly used in natural circulation modelling in the nuclear industry in aims of identifying correlations applicable to the modelling of the proposed RCCS. One of the objectives of this project is to design and build a one-third-height-scale model of the RCCS. Shortcomings of previous experimental models were assessed and, as far as possible, compensated for in the design of the model. Copper piping is used, eliminating material and surface property uncertainties. Several sight glasses are incorporated in the model, allowing for the visual identification of two-phase flow regimes. An orifice plate is used allowing for bidirectional flow measurement. The orifice plate, thermocouples and pipe-in-pipe heat exchangers are calibrated in-situ to minimize experimental error and aid repeatability. Twelve experiments are performed with data logging occurring every ten seconds. The results presented here are limited to selected single and two-phase flow operating mode results. Error analyses and repeatability of experimental measurements for single and two-phase operating modes as well as cooling water mass flow rates are performed, to show repeatability of experimental results. These results are used to mathematically determine the experimental inside-pipe heat transfer coefficients for both the evaporator and condenser sections. Trends in the heat transfer coefficient profiles are identified and the general behaviour of the profiles is thoroughly explained. The RCCS is modelled as a one-dimensional system. Correlations for the friction factor, heat transfer coefficient, void fraction and two-phase frictional multiplier are identified. The theoretical heat transfer coefficients are calculated using the mathematical model and correlations identified in the literature review. Fluid parameters are evaluated using experimentally determined temperatures and mass flow rates. The resulting heat transfer coefficient profiles are compared to experimentally determined profiles, to confirm the hypothesis that existing correlations do not accurately predict the inside-pipe heat transfer coefficients. The experimentally determined coefficients are correlated to 99% confidence intervals. These generated correlations, along with identified and established twophase heat transfer coefficient correlations, are used in a mathematical model to generate theoretical coefficient profiles. These are compared to the experimentally determined coefficients to show prediction accuracy. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die haalbaarheid van ‘n natuurlike sirkulasie geslote lus vir die Reaktor Holte Verkoeling Stelsel (RHVS) van die Korrelbed Modulêre Kern-Reaktor (KMKR) is die onderwerp van talle navorsings projekte. Probleme geïdentifiseer in vorige studies sluit in die hipotetiese onakkuraatheid van hitte-oordrag koëffisiënt korrelasies beskikbaar in literatuur. Die doel van die navorsing aangebied is om binne-pyp hitte-oordrag koëffisiënt korrelasies te ontwikkel spesifiek vir die huidige ontwerp van die RHVS. Ten einde dit te bereik, word ‘n literatuurstudie uitgevoer wat kern-reaktors identifiseer wat gebruik maak van natuurlike sirkulasie lusse. Twaalf eksperimente word uitgevoer en data word elke tien sekondes aangeteken. Die resultate wat hier aangebied word, is beperk tot geselekteerde enkel- en tweefase vloei meganismes van werking. Fout ontleding en herhaalbaarheid van eksperimentele metings, om die herhaalbaarheid van eksperimentele resultate te toon. Hierdie is gebruik om wiskundig te bepaal wat die eksperimentele binne-pyp hitte-oordrag koëffisiënte is vir beide die verdamper en kondenseerder afdelings. Die eksperimenteel bepaalde koëffisiënte is gekorreleer en die gegenereerde korrelasies, saam met geïdentifiseerde twee-fase hitte-oordrag koëffisiënt korrelasies, word gebruik in 'n wiskundige model om teoretiese koëffisiënt profiele te genereer. Dit word dan vergelyk met die eksperimenteel bepaalde hitteoordrag koëffisiënte om die akkuraatheid van voorspelling te toon. Development,testing and fluid interaction simulation of a bioprosthetic valve for transcatheter aortic valve implantation

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs) for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) have been rapidly developing over the last decade since the first valve replacement using the TAVI technique. TAVI is a minimally invasive valve replacement procedure offering lifesaving treatment to patients who are denied open heart surgery. The biomedical engineering research group at Stellenbosch University designed a 19 mm balloon expandable BHV for TAVI in 2007/8 for testing in animal trials. In the current study the valve was enlarged to 23 mm and 26 mm diameters. A finite element analysis was performed to aid in the design of the stents. New stencils were designed and manufactured for the leaflets using Thubrikar‟s equations as a guide. The 23 mm valve was manufactured and successfully implanted into two sheep. Fluid structure interaction (FSI) simulations constitute a large portion of this thesis and are being recognized as an important tool in the design of BHVs. Furthermore, they provide insight into the interaction of the blood with the valve, the leaflet dynamics and valve hemodynamic performance. The complex material properties, pulsating flow, large deformations and coupling of the fluid and the physical structure make this one of the most complicated and difficult research areas within the body. The FSI simulations, of the current valve design, were performed using a commercial programme called MSC.Dytran. A validation study was performed using data collected from a cardiac pulse duplicator. The FSI model was validated using leaflet dynamics visualisation and transvalvular pressure gradient comparison. Further comparison studies were performed to determine the material model to be used and the effect of leaflet free edge length and valve diameter on valve performance. The results from the validation study correlated well, considering the limitations that were experienced. However, further research is required to achieve a thorough validation. The comparative studies indicated that the linear isotropic material model was the most stable material model which could be used to simulate the leaflet behaviour. The free edge length of the leaflet affects the leaflet dynamics but does not greatly hinder its performance. The hemodynamic performance of the valve improves with an increase in diameter and the leaflet dynamics perform well considering the increased surface area and length. Many limitations in the software prevented more accurate material models and flow initiation to be implemented. These limitations significantly restricted the research and confidence in the results. Further investigation regarding the implementation of FSI simulations of a heart valve using the commercial software is recommended. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Bio-prostetiese hartkleppe (Bioprosthetic Heart Valves - BHVs) wat gebruik word vir transkateter aortaklep-inplantings (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation - TAVI) het geweldig vinnige ontwikkeling getoon in die afgelope tien jaar sedert die eerste klepvervanging wat van die TAVI prosedure gebruik gemaak het. TAVI is ʼn minimaal indringende klepvervangingsprosedure wat lewensreddende behandeling bied aan pasiënte wat ope-hart sjirurgie geweier word. Die Biomediese Ingenieurswese Navorsingsgroep (BERG) by Stellenbosch Universiteit het in 2007/8 ʼn 19 mm ballon-uitsetbare BHV vir TAVI ontwerp vir eksperimente met diere, en hierdie tesis volg op die vorige projekte. In die huidige studie is die klep vergroot na 23 mm en 26 mm in deursnee. ʼn Eindige element analise is gedoen om by te dra tot die ontwerp van die rekspalke vir die klep. Nuwe stensils is ontwerp en vervaardig vir die klepsuile, deur gebruik te maak van Thubrikar se vergelykings. Die 23 mm klep is vervaardig en suksesvol in twee skape ingeplant. Vloeistruktuur interaksie (Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI)) simulasies vorm ‟n groot deel van die tesis en word gesien as ʼn noodsaaklike hulpmiddel in die ontwerp van BHVs. Die simulasies verskaf ook insig in die interaksie van die bloed met die klep, die klepsuil-dinamika en die klep se hemodinamiese werkverrigting. Die komplekse materiaal eienskappe, polsende vloei, grootskaalse vervorming, die verbinding van die vloeistof en die fisiese struktuur maak van hierdie een van die mees gekompliseerde voorwerpe om te simuleer. Die FSI simulasies van die huidige ontwerp, is uitgevoer deur van kommersiële sagteware, MSC.Dytran, gebruik te maak. ʼn Geldigheidstudie wat data gebruik het vanaf die hartklop-nabootser, is uitgevoer. Die FSI model word geverifieer deur klepsuil dinamika visualisering en ʼn vergelyking van die drukgradiënt gebruik te maak. Verdere vergelykende studies is uitgevoer om te bepaal watter materiaal model om te gebruik, asook die uitwerking van die klepsuil-vrye rand en klepdeursnee op die klep se werkverrigting. Die resultate van die studie korreleer goed, in ag genome die beperkings wat ervaar is. Verdere navorsing is egter nodig vir ʼn volledige geldigheidstudie. Vergelykende studies het getoon dat die liniêre isotropiese materiaalmodel die meer stabiele materiaalmodel is wat kan gebruik word om klepsuilgedrag te simuleer. Die vrye-rand lengte van die klepsuil affekteer die dinamika van die klepsuil, maar belemmer nie die werkverrigting grootliks nie. Die hemodinamiese werkverrigting van die klep verbeter met die toename in deursnee en die klepsuil-dinamika vertoon goed in ag genome die verhoogde oppervlak area en lengte. Die vele beperkings in die sagteware het die implementering van meer akkurate materiaalmodelle verhoed. Hierdie beperkings het ʼn verminderde vertroue in die resultate tot gevolg gehad. Verdere ondersoek rakende die implementering van die FSI simulasies van ʼn hartklep deur kommersieel beskikbare sagteware te gebruik, word aanbevel.

Experimental and numerical investigation of the heat transfer between a high temperature reactor pressure vessel and the outside of the concrete confinement structure

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A high temperature reactor (HTR) generates heat inside of the reactor core through nuclear fission, from where the heat is transferred through the core and heats up the reactor pressure vessel (RPV). The heat from the RPV is transported passively through the reactor cavity, where it is cooled by the reactor cavity cooling system (RCCS), through the concrete confinement structure and ultimately into the environment. The concrete confinement structure can withstand temperatures of up to 65°C for normal operating conditions and temperatures of up to 125°C during an emergency. This project endeavours to research the heat transfer between an HTR’s RPV and the outside of the concrete confinement structure by utilising three investigative approaches: experimental, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and analytical. The first approach, an experimental analysis, required the development of an experi- mental model. The model was used to perform experiments and gather temperature data that could be used to verify the accuracy of the CFD simulations. The second approach was a CFD analysis of the experimental model, and the external concrete temperatures from the simulation were compared with the temperatures measured with the experimen- tal model. Finally, an analytical analysis was performed in order to better understand CFD and how CFD solves natural convection-type problems. The experiments were performed successfully and the measurements taken were com- pared with the CFD results. The CFD results are in good agreement with the Dry experiments, but not with the Charged experiments. It was identified that the inaccurate results for the CFD simulations of the Charged experiments arose due to convective heat leakage through gaps in the heat shield and between the heat shield and the sides of the experimental model. A computer program was developed for the analytical analysis and it was established that the program could successfully solve the natural convection in a square cavity - as required. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ’n Hoë temperatuur reaktor (HTR) genereer hitte binne die reaktor kern deur kernsplyting en die hitte word dan deur die kern versprei en verhit die reaktor se drukvat. Die hitte van die reaktor drukvat word dan passief deur die reaktorholte versprei, waar dit deur die reaktorholte se verkoelingstelsel afgekoel word, en deur die beton beskermingstruktuur gelei word en uiteindelik die omgewing bereik. Die beton beskermingstruktuur kan temperature van tot 65°C onder normale operasietoestande van die reaktor weerstaan, en temperature van tot 125°C tydens ’n noodgeval. Hierdie projek poog om die hitte-oordrag tussen ’n HTR-reaktor drukvat en die buitekant van die beton beskermingstruktuur te on- dersoek deur gebruik te maak van drie ondersoekbenaderings: eksperimenteel, numeriese vloei dinamika (NVD) en analities. Die eerste benadering, ’n eksperimentele analise, het die ontwikkeling van ’n eksper- imentele model vereis. Die model is gebruik om eksperimente uit te voer en temperatu- urmetings te neem wat gebruik kon word om die akkuraatheid van die NVD simulasies te bevestig. Die eksperimente is suksesvol uitgevoer en die metings is gebruik om die NVD resultate mee te vergelyk. Die NVD resultate van die Droë eksperimente het goeie akkuraatheid getoon. Dit was nie die geval vir die Gelaaide eksperimente nie. Daar is geïdentifiseer dat die verskille in resultate tussen die NVD en die eksperimente aan natuurlike konveksie hitte verliese deur gapings in die hitteskuld en tussen die hitteskuld en die kante van die eksperimentele model toegeskryf kan word. ’n Rekenaarprogram is geskryf vir die analitiese ontleding en die program kon suksesvol die natuurlike konveksie in ’n vierkantige ruimte oplos.

CFD investigation of the atmospheric boundary layer under different thermal stability conditions

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An accurate description of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is a prerequisite for computational fluid dynamic (CFD) wind studies. This includes taking into account the thermal stability of the atmosphere, which can be stable, neutral or unstable, depending on the nature of the surface fluxes of momentum and heat. The diurnal variation between stable and unstable conditions in the Namib Desert interdune was measured and quantified using the wind velocity and temperature profiles that describe the thermally stratified atmosphere, as derived by Monin- Obukhov similarity theory. The implementation of this thermally stratified atmosphere into CFD has been examined in this study by using Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. The maintenance of the temperature, velocity and turbulence profiles along an extensive computational domain length was required, while simultaneously allowing for full variation in pressure and density through the ideal gas law. This included the implementation of zero heat transfer from the surface, through the boundary layer, under neutral conditions so that the adiabatic lapse rate could be sustained. Buoyancy effects were included by adding weight to the fluid, leading to the emergence of the hydrostatic pressure field and the resultant density changes expected in the real atmosphere. The CFD model was validated against measured data, from literature, for the flow over a cosine hill in a wind tunnel. The standard k-ε and SST k-ω turbulence models, modified for gravity effects, represented the data most accurately. The flow over an idealised transverse dune immersed in the thermally stratified ABL was also investigated. It was found that the flow recovery was enhanced and re-attachment occurred earlier in unstable conditions, while flow recovery and re-attachment took longer in stable conditions. It was also found that flow acceleration over the crest of the dune was greater under unstable conditions. The effect of the dune on the flow higher up in the atmosphere was also felt at much higher distances for unstable conditions, through enhanced vertical velocities. Under stable conditions, vertical velocities were reduced, and the influence on the flow higher up in the atmosphere was much less than for unstable or neutral conditions. This showed that the assumption of neutral conditions could lead to an incomplete picture of the flow conditions that influence any particular case of interest. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Akkurate beskrywing van die atmosferiese grenslaag (ABL) is 'n voorvereiste vir wind studies met berekenings-vloeimeganika (CFD). Dit sluit in die inagneming van die termiese stabiliteit van die atmosfeer, wat stabiel, neutraal of onstabiel kan wees, afhangende van die aard van die oppervlak vloed van momentum en warmte. Die daaglikse variasie tussen stabiele en onstabiele toestande in die Namib Woestyn interduin is gemeet en gekwantifiseer deur gebruik te maak van die wind snelheid en temperatuur profiele wat die termies gestratifiseerde atmosfeer, soos afgelei deur Monin-Obukhov teorie, beskryf. Daar is bevind dat die vloei herstel is versterk en terug-aanhegging het vroeër plaasgevind in onstabiele toestande, terwyl vloei herstel en terug-aanhegging langer gevat het in stabiele toestande. Daar is ook bevind dat vloei versnelling oor die kruin van die duin groter was onder onstabiele toestande. Die effek van die duin op die vloei hoër op in die atmosfeer is ook op hoër afstande onder onstabiele toestande gevoel, deur middel van verhoogte vertikale snelhede. Onder stabiele toestande, is vertikale snelhede verminder, en die invloed op die vloei hoër op in die atmosfeer was veel minder as vir onstabiel of neutrale toestande. Dit het getoon dat die aanname van neutrale toestande kan lei tot 'n onvolledige beeld van die vloei toestande wat 'n invloed op 'n bepaalde geval kan hê.

Discrete element modelling of packed rock beds for thermal storage applications

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The increased necessity to obtain power from other sources than conventional fossil fuels has led to the growing interest in solar power. The problem with the proposed technology is that it can only provide power during the day and therefore requires some sort of storage system, if power is to be supplied throughout the day and night. A number of storage systems exist, but the one of particular interest for this research, is packed rock beds. Rock beds have the advantage that if designed right, they have the potential to be one of the most cost effective means of storing thermal energy for solar power plants. Discrete Element Models (DEM) of rock beds were therefore developed through both experimental and numerical procedures, by conducting a series of sensitivity, calibration and verification studies. The developed models were then used to study various aspects associated with rock beds, which were either too impractical, impossible or too expensive to conduct through actual experimental work. This research focused specifically on the potential of constructing self-supporting tunnels within the rock beds in order to improve the air flow uniformity through the bed, while minimizing the pressure drop. It was observed that if the appropriate steps were followed, stable self-supporting tunnels could be formed. Valuable information such as the rock orientations resulting from different packing directions could also be derived from the models and finally, a method to convert the DEM models into the appropriate format such that it could be imported into a CFD preprocessor for future CFD studies, was developed. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die verhoogde noodsaaklikheid om energie te verkry uit ander bronne as konvensionele fossielbrandstowwe, het gelei tot die groeiende belangstelling in sonkrag energie. Die probleem met die voorgestelde tegnologie is dat dit net energie gedurende die dag kan voorsien en dus word daar ’n stoorstelsel benodig indien energie deur beide die dag en nag voorsien moet word. Tans bestaan daar wel ’n aantal van hierdie stoorstelsels, maar die een wat van besondere belang is in hierdie navorsing, is verpakte klip beddens. Klip beddens het die voordeel dat, indien dit reg ontwerp is, dit oor die potensiaal beskik om een van die mees koste-doeltreffende middels te wees vir die stoor van termiese energie vir sonkragstasies. Diskreet Element Modelle (DEM) van die klip beddens is ontwikkel deur gebruik te maak van beide experimentele en numeriese metodes waartydens ’n reeks sensitiwiteits-, kalibrasie- en verifiëring studies uitgevoer is. Die ontwikkelde modelle is gebruik om verskeie aspekte van klip beddens te ondersoek, wat of te onprakties, onmoontlik of te duur is vanuit ’n eksperimentele oogpunt. Hierdie navorsing het spesifiek gefokus op die potensiaal om self-ondersteunende tonnels binne in die klip beddens te vorm, ten einde die egaligheid van die lugvloei deur die bed te verbeter, terwyl die drukval geminimeer word. Daar is waargeneem dat stabiele self-ondersteunende tonnels wel gevorm kon word indien die toepaslike stappe gevolg is. Waardevolle inligting soos die klip oriëntasies wat as gevolg van die verskillende verpakkings rigtings onstaan kon ook vanuit die model verkry word. Ten slotte is ’n metode ontwikkel om die DEM modelle na die toepaslike formaat te omskep sodat dit ten einde gebruik kan word in numeriese vloeidinamika studies.

Quantification of the normal patellofemoral shape and its clinical applications

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The shape of the knee’s trochlear groove is a very important factor in the overall stability of the knee. However, a quantitative description of the normal three-dimensional geometry of the trochlea is not available in the literature. This is also reflected in the poor outcomes of patellofemoral arthroplasty (PFA). In this study, a standardised method for femoral parameter measurements on three-dimensional femur models was established. Using software tools, virtual femur models were aligned with the mechanical and the posterior condylar planes and this framework was used to measure the femoral parameters in a repeatable way. An artificial neural network (ANN), incorporating the femoral parameter measurements and classifications done by experienced surgeons, was used to classify knees into normal and abnormal categories. As a result, 15 knees in the database were classified by the ANN as being normal. Furthermore, the geometry of the normal knees was analysed by fitting B-spline curves and circular arcs on their sagittal surface curves to prove and reconfirm that the groove has a circular shape on a sagittal plane. Self-organising maps (SOM), which is a type of ANN, was trained with the acquired data of the normal knees and in this way the normal trochlear geometry could be predicted. The prediction of the anterior-posterior (AP) distance and the trochlear heights showed an average agreement of 97 % between the actual and the predicted normal geometries. A case study was conducted on four types of trochlear dysplasia to determine a normal geometry for these knees, and a virtual surface reconstruction was performed on them. The study showed that the trochlea was deepened after the surface reconstruction, having an average trochlea depth of 5.5 mm compared to the original average value of 2.9 mm. In summary, this research proposed a quantitative method for describing and predicting the normal geometry of a knee by making use of ANN and the femoral parameters that are unaffected by trochlear dysplasia. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die vorm van die trogleêre keep is ’n belangrike faktor in patella-stabiliteit. Tog is ’n kwantitatiewe beskrywing van die normale driedimensionele geometrie van die troglea nog nie beskikbaar nie, wat duidelik blyk uit die swak uitkomste van patellofemorale artroplastie (PFA). In hierdie studie is ’n gestandaardiseerde metode vir die meting van femorale parameters op grond van driedimensionele femurmodelle ontwikkel. Die femurmodel is in lyn gebring met die meganiese en posterior kondilêre vlak, welke raamwerk gebruik is om die femorale parameters op ’n herhaalbare wyse te meet. Die normale knieë is geklassifiseer met ’n kunsmatige neurale netwerk (ANN), wat die femorale parameter-mate sowel as die chirurgiese klassifikasie ingesluit het, en 15 knieë is gevolglik as normaal aangewys. Die normaleknie-geometrie is ontleed deur B-latkrommes en sirkelboë op die sagittale oppervlak-kurwes aan te bring om te bewys en te herbevestig dat die keep uit ’n sirkelvorm op ’n sagittale vlak bestaan. Die ingesamelde data van die normale knieë is ingevoer by selfreëlende kaarte (SOM), synde ’n soort ANN, wat die navorser in staat gestel het om die normale trogleêre geometrie te voorspel. Die voorspelling van die anterior-posterior (AP) afstand en die trogleêre hoogtes toon ’n gemiddelde ooreenkoms van meer as 97 % tussen die werklike en voorspelde normale geometrie. ’n Gevallestudie is op vier soorte trogleêre displasie uitgevoer om die normale geometrie te voorspel en ’n oppervlakrekonstruksie daarop uit te voer. Hierdie studie het getoon dat die troglea ná oppervlakrekonstruksie verdiep was, met ’n gemiddelde trogleadiepte van 5.5 mm in vergelyking met die aanvanklike gemiddelde waarde van 2.9 mm.
