Knowledge technologies process and cultures : improving information and knowledge sharing at the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA)

Onojeharho, Ejovwoke January 2015 (has links)
Over the last few years the ASA determined KM as a priority to assist with reducing knowledge loss, realising information assets and reducing work duplication by attempting to implement IKM tools and strategies. This research employed a pragmatic viewpoint, using a mix of both quantitative and qualitative methods to check reliability, to ensure validity while undertaking the task of implementing the IKM tools. Using a case study strategy and action research was justified, as to be pragmatic the researcher needed to understand the extent of the problem within a specified context. The research discussed in this thesis, provides a new framework for implementing KM tools; focusing on the NSO category, which the case study organisation falls into. The literature agrees enlisting influential members onto the project is vital for success; however, the findings suggested that success was not only tied to this buy-in alone, but also to the organisation s ability to retain these members for the duration of the project. The research proposed the use of a newly developed tool within the new framework, as an approach to reduce the time it takes to undertake traditional social network analysis of the organisation, as it became clear that there was a need for a method of producing updated results of the SNA, which would span the length of long projects within organisations with significantly high staff turn-over rates. Privacy was given as a factor to consider the in literature; however, the findings from this study indicated that a majority of the participants were comfortable with the system. Email knowledge extraction, and email social network systems are not new concepts, however this research presents EKESNA; a novel tool that combines both concepts in a way that allows for the continuous discovery, visualisation, and analysis of knowledge networks around specified topics of interest within an organisation; linking conversations to specific expert knowledge. EKESNA s continuous discovery of the organisation s knowledge network affords members up-to-date data to inform business process reengineering. This is a potentially ground breaking new tool that has the possibility of transforming the KM landscape in NSOs as well as a whole range of other kinds of enterprises.

The survival in a competitive world demands a constant exercise of establishment objectives and goals defined in the strategic planning that shall be shared by the whole organization and monitored constantly. In this environment, the decision to use an integrated system and sophisticated internal controls related to financial management and its tools in order to provide reliable information preferably in real time are seen as competitive advantages, essential to speed up the decision process. The aim of this work is to analyze aspects of the strategic and financial management, their integration and the connections established between them. References to tools and information systems used by the financial management are made and the extension they add value to strategic management is also analyzed. As materials and methods, a case study has taken place in a company that produces electro electronic parts located in the Industrial Pole of Manaus. Three executives directly involved with the strategic and financial planning processes were interviewed. The state of art mentioned in this work admits that, among the different definitions of business strategy, all schools agree concerning the necessity of generating actual and sustainable competitive advantages and defining measurable goals. The integration of strategic and financial management occurs due to the necessity of defining the sources which will allow the achievement of the established goals, also confirmed by the executives who took part in the case study. Based on this approach, this work contributes to reinforce the academic connections between strategy and finance and helps to understand the relationship between them, the importance of the financial tools and information systems.

Computational workflow management for conceptual design of complex systems : an air-vehicle design perspective

Balachandran, Libish Kalathil January 2007 (has links)
The decisions taken during the aircraft conceptual design stage are of paramount importance since these commit up to eighty percent of the product life cycle costs. Thus in order to obtain a sound baseline which can then be passed on to the subsequent design phases, various studies ought to be carried out during this stage. These include trade-off analysis and multidisciplinary optimisation performed on computational processes assembled from hundreds of relatively simple mathematical models describing the underlying physics and other relevant characteristics of the aircraft. However, the growing complexity of aircraft design in recent years has prompted engineers to substitute the conventional algebraic equations with compiled software programs (referred to as models in this thesis) which still retain the mathematical models, but allow for a controlled expansion and manipulation of the computational system. This tendency has posed the research question of how to dynamically assemble and solve a system of non-linear models. In this context, the objective of the present research has been to develop methods which significantly increase the flexibility and efficiency with which the designer is able to operate on large scale computational multidisciplinary systems at the conceptual design stage. In order to achieve this objective a novel computational process modelling method has been developed for generating computational plans for a system of non-linear models. The computational process modelling was subdivided into variable flow modelling, decomposition and sequencing. A novel method named Incidence Matrix Method (IMM) was developed for variable flow modelling, which is the process of identifying the data flow between the models based on a given set of input variables. This method has the advantage of rapidly producing feasible variable flow models, for a system of models with multiple outputs. In addition, criteria were derived for choosing the optimal variable flow model which would lead to faster convergence of the system. Cont/d.

Severino, Maico Roris 02 October 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:51:22Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 DissMRS.pdf: 2404732 bytes, checksum: fdcaf8adcf90eda2f62755874b55222a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-10-02 / Historically, one verifies the appropriation of management tools for the attainement of plusvalue. Among them, the ones related to the organization and the processes of work stand out. However, it is noted that the appropriation of these management tools is carried out not only by capitalist enterprises, but by enterprise of solidary economy (ESE) as well. This master´s degree dissertation purpose is to analyze the common and specific characteristics of the organization and the processes of work in their different models in the capitalist enterprises and ESE. So, it was used a theoretical-empirical research through bibliographic review to characterize the two variables in both social structures, and, through the case study and the participative methodology, identify the specific characteristics of a type of ESE, a cooperative of land reform, in this case, the Cooperativa de Produção Agropecuária Vitória LTDA (COPAVI). In the bibliographic review, it was found that, for the attainment of the plus-value in the capitalist economy, the organization and the processes of work are subjected to constant changes, starting from the development of the method of capitalist production, and among them, simple cooperation, manufacturing, machinery and microelectronic automation, besides the taylorist, fordist, Italian, Swedish and Japanese models, among others. In the EESs, changes also occur, but in the perspective of selfmanagement and the subordination of the technical rationality to the social rationality, through the cooperativism. In the comparative analysis performed, it was found that cooperation is a commom factor for the two types of organization. The capitalist enterprises use the concept of cooperation as simplification and parceling of work activities of each worker for the complementation of the productive process, that is, the cooperation comes through a management imposition. This kind of cooperation is alienating and subordinate, and produces evolution and improvement as time goes by, through corporate competitiveness. To the ESE, cooperation has the meaning of democratic management, collective participation in the processes of work, of collective management and decision making, that, as for the capitalist enterprises, undergo changes for a better insertion of their products in the market. So, at COPAVI, the analysis focused the way changes occur in the organization and work processes, oriented to the implementation of integrated arrangements of productive chains, keeping the characteristics of cooperation as a proposition of non-alienation of the worker. It should be emphasized that this dissertation has not the purpose of creating a model, but show that it is possible to create and develop alternatives for organization and work processes on the basis of self-management.
