An Analysis of Bicycle-Vehicle Interactions at Signalized Intersections with Bicycle BoxesFarley, William Robert 17 March 2014 (has links)
A before-and-after analysis was performed at eleven intersections where a bike box was installed in Portland, Oregon to explore the safety effects of the treatment. Video data were gathered prior to installation at 14 intersections where a bike box installation was planned by the Portland Bureau of Transportation. Cameras were set up to capture three full twenty-four hour days (72 hours) of data for each intersection from Tuesday through Thursday. Of the 14 original selected intersections, 11 intersections actually received the bike box treatment. Video data were again gathered for these intersections after the installation of the bike box for another three full twenty-four hour days (72 hours) between Tuesday and Thursday.
One day of data (24 hours) was selected for observation from both the before and after periods in the analysis for each study intersection during midweek. Safety effects were evaluated by three metrics: 1) observed conflicts; 2) observed cyclist behavior for all conflicts as measured by head or shoulder checks; and 3) reported crash data. To develop the conflict data, a log was created of each motor vehicle and bicycle passing through the intersection for approximately 528 hours of video. All conflicts that were observed during the period were further reviewed by an expert panel that scored conflicts by severity. Following this review, a total of 18 conflicts were observed during the before period. The total exposure in the before period was 39,497 motor vehicles in the vehicle lane adjacent to the bike lane (10,454 of which were right-turning) and 7,849 bicycles. A total of 19 conflicts were observed during the after period. Total exposure was 42,381 motor vehicles in the vehicle lane adjacent to the bike lane (11,053 of which were right-turning) and 5,852 bicycles.
The sample size of observed conflicts was insufficient to draw statistically significant conclusions for any of the specific intersections that were treated. When taking in account the total amount of conflicts, the limited data suggest a slight increase in the rate of conflicts when normalized against a product of right-turning vehicles and bicycles observed in the intersection. The data also suggest that the installation of a bike box at an intersection reduces the rate of conflicts per hundred motor vehicles and increases the rate of conflicts per hundred bicyclists. Data regarding head-checks from the bicyclist shows an increase in bicyclists observing the possibility of conflicts approaching from behind as they pass through the intersection. A review or crash data at each of the intersections shows an increase at three of the observed intersections and a decrease at the remaining five.

The convergence of mobile services and Internet has brought a radical change in mobile networks. An all IP network architecture, an evolution of the radio access transport network, is required to support new high-bandwidth services. Unfortunately, existing control mechanisms are insufficient to guarantee end users a high quality of experience. However, coordinating radio and transport network resources is expected to yield a more efficient solution. This thesis project investigates the interactions between the congestion avoidance protocols, explicit congestion notification, and the traffic engineering metrics for latency and bandwidth, when using Open Shortest Path First with traffic engineering (OSPF-TE) as a routing protocol. Using knowledge of these interactions, it is possible to identify the appearance of bottlenecks and to control the congestion in the transport links within a radio access transport network. Augmenting a topology map with the network’s current characteristics and reacting to evidence of potential congestion, further actions, such as handovers can be taken to ensure the users experience their expected quality of experience. The proposed method has been validated in a test bed. The results obtained from experiments and measurements in this test bed provide a clear picture of how the traffic flows in the network. Furthermore, the behavior of the network observed in these experiments, in terms of real-time performance and statistical analysis of metrics over a period of time, shows the efficiency of this proposed solution. / Tjänstekonvergensen av Internet- och mobila tjänster har medfört en radikal förändring i mobilnäten. En ”All IP” nätverksarkitektur, en utveckling av radios transportnät. Utvecklingen krävs för att stödja de nya bredbandiga tjänsterna. Tyvärr är befintliga kontrollmekanismer otillräckliga för att garantera användarens kvalitetsupplevelse. Med att samordna radio- och transportnätverkets resurser förväntar man sig en effektivare lösning. Detta examensarbete undersöker samspelet mellan protokoll för att undvika överlast, direkt indikation av överlast och trafikal statistik för fördröjning och bandbredd med trafikstyrning baserat på fördröjning och bandbredd , vid användning av Open Shortest Path First ( OSPF - TE ) som routingprotokoll. Med hjälp av information om dessa interaktioner, är det möjligt att identifiera uppkomsten av flaskhalsar och för att styra trafikstockningar i transportförbindelser inom ett radioaccess transportnät. En utökad topologikarta med nätverkets aktuella egenskaper kommer att reagera på en potentiell överbelastning. Ytterligare åtgärder, till exempel överlämningar, vidtas i mobilnätet för att säkerställa användarens upplevda kvalitet. Den föreslagna metoden har validerats i en testmiljö. Resultaten från experiment och mätningar i denna testmiljö ger en tydlig bild av hur trafikflödena framskrider i nätverket. Beteendet hos nätverket som observeras i dessa experiment, i termer av realtidsprestanda och statistisk analys av mätvärden över en tidsperiod, visar effektiviteten av denna föreslagna lösning.

<div>The exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems is resulting in complex environments comprising of various devices interacting with each other and with users. In addition, the rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence are making those devices able to autonomously modify their behaviors through the use of techniques such as reinforcement learning (RL). There is thus the need for an intelligent monitoring system on the network edge with a global view of the environment to autonomously predict optimal device actions. However, it is clear however that ensuring safety and security in such environments is critical. To this effect, we develop a constrained RL framework for IoT environments that determines optimal devices actions with respect to user-defined goals or required functionalities using deep Q learning. We use anomaly based intrusion detection on the network edge to dynamically generate security and safety policies to constrain the RL agent in the framework. We analyze the balance required between ‘safety/security’ and ‘functionality’ in IoT environments by manipulating the exploration of safe and unsafe benefit state spaces in the RL framework. We instantiate the framework for testing on application layer control in smart home environments, and network layer control including network functionalities like rate control and routing, for SDN based environments.</div>

A lo largo de los años ha sido notorio el incremento de vehículos en el Perú, de igual manera en sus ciudades y este proyecto se desarrolla en la provincia de Chiclayo, precisamente en una intersección vial muy concurrida entre la avenida Chinchaysuyo con avenida Fitzcarrald y la avenida Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre. En dicha intersección se genera congestión vehicular, esto se puede evidenciar en las colas de vehículos y la excesiva demora que se generan paracruzar una avenida sobre todo en horas punta. Teniendo en cuenta esta problemática y enfocando a la Ingeniería de Tránsito, la cual busca una planificación, diseño y principalmente busca una solución para mejorar el flujo vehicular. La investigación se centrará en analizar dicha intersección, elaborar un estudio de tráfico, levantamiento topográfico, con estos estudios se elabora un nuevo diseño geométrico, con esto también se hace una simulación vehicular. Al resultado de todos los datos se evaluarán dos propuestas y se determinara cual es la más

At the result of all the data, two proposals will be evaluated and it will be determined which is the most convenient for said intersection and a modeling will be elaborated using the Synchro 8 simulation program.

approximately 34 000. This includes 4 000 deaths, 10 000 serious injuries and
20 000 minor injuries, costing the country an estimated R2,55 billion. A large number
of injuries involve children and this is distressing but preventing this is a challenge.
Statistics indicate that pedestrians are most at risk. School children have been
identified as forming a considerable percentage of pedestrians. Consequently it is
important to understand factors that influence children's travel patterns as an initial
step toward reducing the accident rate. This study examines children's travel patterns
at primary and secondary schools in the eThekwini area.
In the absence of statistics regarding journeys to transport children to school, a
questionnaire survey was designed to determine demographics, mode of travel to
school, travel cost and duration, factors influencing choices of alternate modes of
travel and problems experienced during school travel in terms of road safety. In
addition, an on-site investigation was undertaken to assess the relevant engineering
aspects including geometric design, traffic calming, signage and other traffic
management aspects.
This study focuses on scholar transport and discusses the findings of pilot and focal
surveys.
On analyzing the data, various problems were identified, namely: the road
environment favours drivers over pedestrians, an absence of a formal travel plan,
poor driver behaviour and an absence of dedicated school buses. A range of
possible solutions is recommended. The recommendations focus on the Engineering,
Enforcement and Evaluation aspects.

Establishing and applying speed-flow relationships for traffic on rural two-lane two- way highways in the Western CapeTwagirimana, Janvier 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Speed-flow-density relationships are the most useful tools in the highway design and planning process. They are useful in predicting the roadway capacity, in determining the adequate level-of-service of traffic flow and in determining travel time for a given roadway.
Two-lane two-way rural highways constitute the vast majority of the rural road network in South Africa. Nowadays in the Western Cape and other provinces of South Africa, the speed-flow-density relationships normally used for rural transportation studies are derived from the Highway Capacity Manual, which reflects the traffic conditions in the North American situation. Since the North American traffic conditions may be different from the South African conditions, a need to investigate speed-flow-density relationships on these highways in South Africa arises in order to justify any investment made on these roads.
In this context, a video technique was used to collect traffic flow data during morning peak hours on two rural two-lane two-way highways in the Western Cape Province in order to investigate these relationships. Through the use of Adobe premiere C.S 6 software, travel time of individual vehicles and distance headways were measured and used in computation of average speed and average density.
Several researchers have developed models to describe the relationships between traffic characteristics on uninterrupted flow facilities. In this study, some of these models were tested using collected data in order to investigate which model fits the data satisfactorily. Statistical methods were used to evaluate the ability of each model to predict the flow characteristics over the whole range of data. Average speed and density data were used through regression analysis to perform curve fitting and testing of these developed models. In the next stage, the model which provided a best representation of the data on each section was selected and through the application of the steady-state equation (2.1), flow-density and speed-flow relationships were established on these sections. The available data were also used to investigate the impact the observation time has on the speed-flow curve and the resulting capacity value.
Finally, the developed speed-flow curves were used to determine the capacities of the study sections. These capacity values were used to determine if the shoulder usage contributes in increasing the capacity of two-lane two-way highways by comparing them to the capacity provided by HCM. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Spoed-vloei-digtheid verhoudings is baie handig in die beplanning en ontwerp van paaie. Dit kan ook gebruik word in die voorspelling van kapasiteit, diensvlak en reistyd. Twee-laan twee-rigting paaie maak die grootste deel van die Suid-Afrikaanse padnetwerk uit en vir die beplanning daarvan word van Amerikaanse spoed-vloei-digtheid verhoudings gebruik gemaak aangesien daar nog nie voorheen ‘n studie hiervan in SA gemaak is nie.
Video-opnames is gebruik om verkeersvloeidata op twee paaie in die omgewing van Stellenbosch te versamel. Die reistyd en digtheid van individuele voertuie is tydens spitstye waargeneem. Die data is gebruik om te bepaal watter modelle die beste is om die spoed-vloei-digtheid verhoudings vir hierdie paaie te modelleer. Die beste modelle is dan gebruik om die kapasiteit van die paaie te bepaal en dit te vergelyk met die Amerikaanse waardes.

Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is a form of utility computing which has emerged with the recent innovations in the service computing and data communication technologies. Regardless of the fact that IaaS is attractive for application service providers, satisfying user requests while ensuring cloud operational objectives is a complicated task that raises several resource management challenges. Among these challenges, limited controllability over network services delivered to cloud consumers is prominent in single datacenter cloud environments. In addition, the lack of seamless service migration and optimization, poor infrastructure utilization, and unavailability of efficient fault tolerant techniques are noteworthy challenges in geographically distributed datacenter clouds.
Initially in this thesis, a datacenter resource management framework is presented to address the challenge of limited controllability over cloud network traffic. The proposed framework integrates network virtualization functionalities offered by software defined networking (SDN) into cloud ecosystem. To provide rich traffic control features to IaaS consumers, control plane virtualization capabilities offered by SDN have been employed. Secondly, a quality of service (QoS) aware seamless service migration and optimization framework has been proposed in the context of geo-distributed datacenters. Focus has been given to a mobile end-user scenario where frequent cloud service migrations are required to mitigate QoS violations. Finally, an SDN-based dynamic fault restoration scheme and a shared backup-based fault protection scheme have been proposed. The fault restoration has been achieved by introducing QoS-aware reactive and shared risk link group-aware proactive path computation algorithms. Shared backup protection has been achieved by optimizing virtual and backup link embedding through a novel integer linear programming approach. The proposed solutions significantly improve bandwidth utilization in inter-datacenter networks while recovering from substrate link failures.

Assessing the marginal cost of freeway congestion for vehicle fleets using passive GPS speed dataWood, Nicholas Stephen 08 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the marginal cost of congested travel to a variety of businesses by observing time spent in congestion and estimating excess labor costs based upon the relevant value of time. The fleets in the scoping study represented commercial deliveries of goods and services, government agencies, and transit systems. Observations on limited-access expressways within the 13-county Atlanta metropolitan region were used in the analysis. Vehicles were monitored by using a passive GPS assembly that transmitted speed and location data in real-time to an off-site location. Installation and operation during the observation period required no interaction from the driver. Over 217 hours of good freeway movement during 354 vehicle-days was recorded. Rates of delay, expressed as a unit of lost minutes per mile traveled, were calculated by taking the difference in speeds observed during congestion from an optimal free-flow speed of 45 mph and dividing that by the distance traveled per segment. The difference between the 50th and 95th percentile delay rates was used as the measure for travel unreliability. Daily average values of extra time needed per fleet vehicle to ensure on-time arrivals were derived, and the median buffer across all fleets was 1.65 hours of added time per vehicle. Weekly marginal costs per fleet vehicle were estimated by factoring in the corresponding driver wages or hourly operation costs (for transit fleets). Equivalent toll rates were calculated by multiplying the 95th percentile delay rate by the hourly costs. The equivalent toll per mile traveled was representative of an equal relationship between the marginal costs of congestion experienced and a hypothetical state of free-flow travel (under first-best rules of marginal cost pricing). The median equivalent toll rates across all fleets was $0.43 per mile for weekday mornings, $0.13 per mile for midday weekdays, $0.53 per mile for afternoon weekdays and $0.01 per mile for weekday nights and weekends.
