Written in Thread: The Evolution of Quilting in the Bethel and Aurora Colonies

Flier, Hannah 11 July 2013 (has links)
According to current models, 19th century American quilts are presented as simple objects of cultural heritage or considered for their similarities to other forms of modern art. This thesis follows a three part approach in order to study these objects which are valuable sources of historical information in their full context. This approach includes the historical, social/aesthetic, and material contexts of the objects. The topic of the study is the quilts of the Bethel and Aurora colonies, 19th century Christian "utopian" sects in Missouri and Oregon. While societies such as the Bethel and Aurora colonies shunned many aspects of modernization, quilts appear to be an area of connection with the outside world. The quilts serve as material evidence for the tension between communal and secular worldviews in the colonies.

Variabilidade genética de progênies de polinização aberta de Eucalyptus Grandis Hill ex Maiden e correlações entre caracteres juvenil-adulto /

Brizolla, Thiago Fernandes, 1981- January 2009 (has links)
Resenzitizace leukemických a lymfomových buněk k TRAILem indukované apoptóze / Resenzitalizace leukemických a lymfomavých buněk k trailerem indukované apoptóze

Molinský, Jan January 2013 (has links)
Apoptosis serves as a natural barrier to cancer development, and the resistance to apoptosis represents one of the key capabilities acquired during tumor development or progression. Impairment of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway exemplifies one of the established mechanisms of constitutive or acquired drug resistance. As most of the currently used cytotoxic drugs initiate tumor cell death by direct or indirect triggering of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway, impairment of the intrinsic pathway is associated with therapy failure. Targeting of the death receptors, however, enables induction of apoptosis even in the chemotherapy resistant cancer cells. TRAIL is a death ligand belonging to the TNFα superfamily that specifically kills tumor cells while sparing healthy tissues. Much enthusiasm has been generated for TRAIL as a highly promising targeted anti-cancer agent. However, many primary tumors have been shown to be TRAIL resistant. In attempt to overcome such an intrinsic TRAIL resistance a wide array of agents have been shown to sensitize tumor cells to TRAIL. Previous studies reported that roscovitine, a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, sensitized various solid cancer cells to TRAIL. In this study we analyzed the sensitivity of diverse hematologic malignancies to TRAIL-induced apoptosis and measured the...

Inmätning och kartering av cykelleder åt Torsby Sportcenter, Torsby kommun / Measurement of positions and mapping of bicycle trails for Torsby Sports Center, Torsby municipality

Throgen, Anders January 2011 (has links)
Abstract   This report describes an approach to measure positions and map proposed bicycle trails for Torsby Sports Center, and to produce a document with the address information of affected property owners.   Inventory and measurement of positions was carried out with an ordinary handheld GPS receiver. The map was produced using GIS (ArcMap) with property maps from the National Land Survey as background, from which the selected layers were exported. For some layers classes were defined into one class, in order to obtain an appropriate map design. All layers were given their own type of symbols. Property ownership data was singled out for concerned properties in the property map. Property designation was made in the program TekisWebb TefatTorsby and then imported into a property owner table. The symbol for bicycle trails in the map was obtained from the ArcMap symbol library.   It was found that the accuracy of the GPS receiver is high enough in relation to the map scale. The selection of properties gave desired results and was reported complete. The selection of the property owners was, however, not complete.  The bicycle trail symbols was considered to meet the requirements of being extra clearly visible on the map’s background information.   Measurement of positions can be improved if the setting is set to the highest positioning accuracy. The compiling of properties and property owners involved extensive manual handling work, and it would be possible to automate that process further. Improvement of bicycle trails visualization can be done by adding a larger scale map of the local area surrounding Torsby Sports Center and include in the map, or by increasing the map scale and format.

Two rest stops along the Trans Canada Trail

Stark, Caroline Joy 05 1900 (has links)
Within the next decade an inter provincial trail, called the Trans Canada Trail, will be developed to accommodate non-motorized traffic such as hikers, skiers, horsemen, and cyclists. Anticipating the need for rest stop facilities, this thesis seeks to explore the design potential of two isolated facilities. The focus of this exploration is the impact of landscape on the development of architectural form. While existing conditions found in each site were recorded and considered throughout the design process, a conscious effort was also made to build a site rather than site plan This position, first articulated by William Rees Morrish in his book Civilizing Terrain. acknowledges that not every piece of land can become an urban place. Instead, placemaking often requires willful acts of change in order to enhance or more effectively reveal its existing qualities. This position opposes the current attitude fostered by the environmental movement that all landscapes should remain untouched. The two sites selected were both located in western Canada: one on the eastern shore of Lake in southern British Columbia and the other in a farmer's field near Milk River in southern Alberta. This thesis traces the discoveries and attempts made to locate a center, develop an arrival sequence and insert an architectural form into the experience of the landscape. Both sites were explored simultaneously, reaching a similar level of resolution, at which point the British Columbia site was dropped and the prairie site was developed further. The Alberta site then became the developed body of the thesis. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

Thaw Slump Activity Via Close-range ‘Structure from Motion’ in Time-lapse Using Ground-based Autonomous Cameras

Armstrong, Lindsay Faye January 2017 (has links)
Northwestern Arctic Canada is one of the most rapidly warming regions in the Arctic (Serreze et al., 2009). Retrogressive thaw slumps (RTS) are one of the most dramatic thermokarst features in permafrost terrain (Kokelj et al., 2013). Many studies have focused on describing the distribution of thermokarst landscapes (i.e., Olefeldt et al., 2016), as well as change in thermokarst terrain over the historical record (i.e., Kokelj and Jorgenson, 2013). However, improved high temporal and spatial resolution monitoring of thaw slump activity is required to enhance our understanding of factors governing their growth. Recent advances in aerial and ground-based Structure from Motion (SfM), a photogrammetry application, allow for temporal and spatial high-resolution characterization of landscape changes. This thesis explores two methods in SfM photogrammetry: 1) aerial imaging using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and 2) ground-based imaging using stationary multi-camera time-lapse installations, to derive high-resolution temporal and spatial data for change detection. A trend in mean elevation change was produced, and agrees with the RTS behaviour over the study period, which supports the viability of the proposed capture method. The lack of congruency in data range suggests need for further development in terms of analyses and differencing algorithms employed. The proposed method may be feasible for employment in other fields of science in which high temporal resolution change detection is desired. This proof of concept study was conducted at a small slump on the Peel Plateau, NWT, Canada, and aims to enhance understanding of the development and perpetuation of thaw slumps, to better anticipate landscape and ecosystem responses to future climate change.

GoJoCo Trail Awareness

Neighbor, Rebecca, Holt, Matthew, Hamby, Emily, Brass, Timothy, Schetzina, Karen 05 April 2018 (has links)
Obesity is one of the largest health problems our nation currently faces. There are many contributing factors to the development of obesity, including genetics, lifestyle, diet, social and economic status, and lack of education or resources. In the rural East Tennessee community of Johnson County, lack of exercise has been identified as a major contributor to obesity. In addition, community members have expressed concern of a lack of knowledge of public places to exercise, such as walking paths and hiking trails. Previous research has shown that access to educational materials, such as informational brochures and maps, can increase knowledge of exercise locations. Our hypothesis, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, is that creating and placing brochures in various locations throughout the community will normalize and encourage the use of these locations to increase exercise and ultimately improve the health of the community. An initial survey was sent to community members via email to determine what content should be included in the brochure. In conjunction with the Johnson County Health Council, a list of all walking paths and trails in the county was compiled. Each location was then visited to take note of the amenities available, the difficulty and the length of each path, and the hours available to the public. This information was then formatted into easy-to-read bullet points and grouped by geographic region in the county and a cartoon map developed. The completed brochure was then evaluated for effectiveness at increasing awareness of local paths and trails. Participants at a local doctor’s office were asked to complete a four question pre-survey assessing their current knowledge of walking paths and trails. The brochure was then given to the participants and sufficient time allowed to look through it. Participants completed an eight question post-survey which assessed any change in knowledge which occurred as a result of the brochure. The study was reviewed and approved by the ETSU Institutional Review Board. Preliminary results (n=6) show that the brochure is effective at increasing awareness and participants are more likely to visit one of the listed trails in the next month as a result. Further data collection is currently underway. By using a community based participatory approach, the specific needs of the community could be addressed. One drawback of this study is that it does not assess actual changes in trail usage or physical activity. However, it is hoped that the creation of this brochure and its use in the Johnson County community will lead to a more active community and will inspire future health initiatives.

Provisional formulation of normative data for semi and unskilled black and coloured workers on the Trail making Test

Daly, Nigel January 1988 (has links)
Includes bibliography. / This study provides a provisional normative range of performance for the South African semi- and unskilled black and coloured population groups on the Trail Making Test. One hundred and six black and coloured semi- and unskilled workers from the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, satisfying the criteria of 8 years or less of formal education, with no neurological impairment or psychopathology, and some degree of literacy, were randomly selected. Parts A and B of the Trail Making Test were then administered and scored, and the scores reported in tabular form, broken up in terms of race, age and education. A statistical analysis (multiple linear regression) was applied to the data and additional information on the effects of age, education and sex on test performance briefly discussed in terms of previous research findings. The results of this study add weight to Dugmore's (1987) assertion that existing norms currently in use for the Trail making Test are invalid for these population groups. Limitations of the study and suggestions for further research were also briefly discussed.

Natural Killer Cells Adjudicate Every Stage of Anti-Viral Immune Response

Woolard, Stacie N., Leonard, Cory A., Kumaraguru, Uday 01 January 2010 (has links)
The definition of Natural Killer (NK) cells has undergone dramatic modification with the advance of immunological research tools. NK cells can no longer be classified only as indiscriminate killer innate immune cells. NK cells are now known to form functional relationships with accessory cells to shape and promote the adaptive immune response. Recently, antigen specific and cytokine induced memory NK cells have been demonstrated to exhibit the characteristic phases of an adaptive immune cell, including extended persistence and robust function in response to reexposure. New findings in basic NK immunobiology indicate that the role of NK cells is underappreciated and these cells may potentially be manipulated for the development of anti-viral therapies.
