Aspekte van die woonwaparkbedryf in Suid-Afrika met besondere verwysing na die bemarkingsvraagstukke en markgeleenthede

Van der Linde, Louis Jacobus 16 April 2014 (has links)
D.Econ. / The objective of this study is to define the marketing problems and opportunities of the caravan park industry of South Africa in its total operational environment. An important secondary aim was an analysis of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of caravan park users in order to provide a basis for market segmentation and targeting. The scope of this study was limited mainly to the existing white campers in South Africa. The macro-, market- and resources environments were then evaluated and subsequently, aspects pertaining to the planning of a marketing policy and strategy were investigated. As regards the methods, a conventionally structured questionnaire was used as the major research method. Completion of the questionnaire by 411 respondents was achieved with users at caravan parks throughout South Africa. A major recommendation, is that the heterogenic characteristics of caravan park users in South Africa offer an opportune base for effective segmentation of their markets. The basic motives why people camp, can serve as the ideal platform to identify economic viable clusters in themarket, From this point, a differentiated total product concept can be developed to achieve a desired rate of return in addition to camper satisfaction. The economic climate, potentially, has a serious effect on camper spending and behaviour. Caravan parks should develop operating systems to ease payment by customers. This could make camping more affordable and thereby decrease the risk factor for parks during periods of recession. Caravan park managers must seek a closer relationship with caravan manufacturers in research projects, planning developments and in monitoring marketing trends to enable them to sinchronize the technical development in the industry. Government institutions and agencies should define the aims of their roles in this industry, and restructure the involvement between the public and private sector in terms of the control and ownership of caravan parks. The caravan park industry has several differential advantages on their competitors which can effectively be incorporated in an integrated marketing program. The main advantage is the better satisfaction of needs such as family-togetherness, social interaction, nature-orientation, escape, peace and quietness, "real" change of pace and lifestyle, and the rlexlbllitv in holiday pattern. The present strategies and the marketing approach of the caravan park managers in South Africa can, in general, be improved. Training and orientation programs should be implemented by government to stimulate the improvement of the quality of campers' satisfaction. This strategy could place the industry on a financially more sound base, whereby the level of products, service, facilities and programs could be increased. Periodic evaluation by management of this industry within its total controllable and uncontrollable' environmental settings is essential for future planning. Long-term growth can only occur if the industry identifies its problems and exploits every opportunity to achieve its aims more effectively. The caravan park industry is underdeveloped in the South African business environ. ment. It needs a more professional approach from all parties involved to create the platform from where it can proceed on the road to become a vital and prosperous industry in the tourism sector. The findings of this study especially point at some means by which the caravan park industry can be promoted and be made more effective and satisfying from the users' point of view, and more profitable for the entrepreneurs involved in this sensitive and complicated area of private enterprise. In order to achieve this aim, the main strategy to be followed should involve regular evaluation and forecasting of the macro and market environments. Knowledge and trends should be obtained to segment the market on a geographic, demographic, psychographic basis.' Market segmentation is necessary to determine why, where, what, when, how, who and how much do the market segments buy. This quantitative and qualitative information must be used to identify opportunities and problems in the market, which a caravan park with strong and weak points should exploit. Effective target marketing should be done to form a basis to formulate a product-, distribution-, tariff-, and marketing communication strategy to fit the specific park objectives

A study of fatigue loading on automotive and transport structures

Wannenburg, Johann 03 April 2008 (has links)
It is accepted that defective structural designs are mostly caused by insufficient knowledge of input data, such as material properties or loading, rather than inadequate analysis or testing methods. In particular, loads associated with automotive and transport (trucks, trailers, containers, trains) structures are nontrivial to quantify. Such loads arise from stochastic and ill-defined processes such as driver/operator actions and structure-terrain interaction. The fundamental processes involved with the determination of input loading are measurements, surveys, simulation, estimation and calculation from field failures. These processes result in design criteria, code requirements and/or testing requirements. The present study deals with methods for the establishment of input loading for automotive and transport structures. It is attempted to generalise and unify new and existing techniques into a cohesive methodology. This is achieved by combining researched current theory and best practices, with lessons learned during application on, as well as new techniques developed for, a number of complex case studies, involving road tanker vehicles, light commercial vehicles, industrial vehicles, as well as tank containers. Apart from the above, the present study offers four individual, unique contributions. Firstly, two methods, widely applied by industry, namely the Remote Parameter Analysis (RPA) method, which entails deriving time domain dynamic loads by multiplying measured signals from remotely placed transducers with a unit-load static finite element based transfer matrix, as well as the Modal Superposition method, are combined to establish a methodology which accounts for modal response without the need for expensive dynamic response analysis. Secondly, a concept named Fatigue Equivalent Static Load (FESL) is developed, where fatigue load requirements are derived from measurements as quasi-static g-loads, the responses to which are considered as stress ranges applied a said number of times during the lifetime of the structure. In particular, it is demonstrated that the method may be employed for multi-axial g-loading, as well as for cases where constraint conditions change during the mission of the vehicle. The method provides some benefits compared to similar methods employed in the industry. Thirdly, a complex analytical model named Two Parameter Approach (TPA) is developed, defining the usage profile of a vehicle in terms of a bivariate probability density distribution of two parameters (distance/day, fatigue damage/distance), derived from measurements and surveys. Based on an inversion of the TPA model, a robust technique is developed for the derivation of such statistical usage profiles from only field failure data. Lastly, the applicability of the methods is demonstrated on a wide range of comprehensive case studies. Importantly, in most cases, substantiation of the methods is achieved by comparison of predicted failures with ‘real-world’ failures, in some cases made possible by the unusually long duration of the study. / Thesis (PhD (Mechanical Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering / PhD / Unrestricted

Extra-light log trailer design

Wylezinski, Andrzej T. 02 February 2007 (has links)
A mechanical design of an ultra-light log trailer was performed. The design process necessitated the experimental measurement of dynamic loads exerted on a log trailer and a comprehensive stress analysis of the structure. Two light-weight, prototype, log trailers were selected to be studied, after an exhaustive survey of the existing designs. Finite element models (FEM) were developed for each of the trailers using three-dimensional tapered unsymmetrical beam elements. Static stress analysis was performed to identify critical spots in the structures and to estimate stresses encountered at these locations. These spots were selected as strain gage placements for the experimental dynamic stress analysis. A special data acquisition system based on the STD bus computer was designed, assembled, programmed, and tested for the experimental force and strain measurements. Experimental stress analysis of each of the selected trailers was performed. Dynamic loads and the resultant strains at critical locations were measured, both while simulating extreme situations, and during typical work cycles. The recorded service stress-time histories were then used to identify peak values of the maximum dynamic loading and the structure response. Stress distributions throughout the structures were obtained using the FEM models. The recorded service load spectra were then utilized to assess a fatigue life of each of the tested designs. A survey of log trailers for fatigue cracks was conducted when the dynamic stress analyses indicated that a log trailer is most likely to fail due to repeated loading. The causes for fatigue cracking of log trailers were then investigated through elastic shell element FEM modeling. Finally, an efficient and economically feasible ultra-light design was developed based on the formulated recommendations. The most important features of the proposed design are: 1. Reduced tare weight of 7,770 pounds. 2. Sound structural integrity. 3. Material of high strength and toughness used throughout. 4. Improved fatigue resistance (e.g., welds were replaced by elastic friction joints). 5. Movable bunks. 6. Replaceable bolsters and standards. 7. Constant tensioning device for load binders. / Ph. D.

Conceptual design and development of an off-road cargo trailer for bicycles / Konceptuell design och utveckling av en terränglastvagn för cyklar

Abdul-Rahman, William, Andersson, Viktor January 2023 (has links)
This report presents the conceptual development of an off-road cargo trailer designed for usage in conjunction with bicycles when camping. The objective of the study is to address the limitations of existing cargo trailers and thereafter create a trailer that efficiently can navigate off-road terrains while carrying various types of cargo. The research includes collecting data regarding user behaviours and desired functions an optimal trailer should obtain and was translated into user requirements. The result demonstrates the successful development of an off-road cargo trailer on a conceptual level that offers innovative solutions and improved load-carrying capacity in comparison to the available market, while considering factors such as weight, manoeuvrability, and ease of use. This research contributes to the field by presenting data, which can be used in development and a comprehensive solution that expands the possibilities for bicycle-based cargo transportation in off-road environments. Future work can include further refinements to optimise the trailer’s performance and address additional user requirements based on the data presented.

The design of a refrigerated semi-trailer using advanced composites

Strydom, Ockert Jacobus 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / A refrigerated semi-trailer was designed to solve manufacturing and operational problems. This was achieved by using advanced pultruded composites. The static and dynamic material response was determined. The dynamic loading on the vehicles was also measured and is presented along with static load cases. These boundary conditions were used in a finite element model to determine the structural performance of the trailer. The results show good static performance with some problem areas which still need attention. Initial poor fatigue performance is improved by increasing the ultimate shear stress of the material. A fatigue optimisation technique is suggested for future use.
