Computer-Assisted Emergency Evacuation Planning Using TransCAD: Case Studies in Western Massachusetts

Andrews, Steven P 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Disasters, ranging from manmade events to natural occurrences, can happen anywhere on the planet, and their consequences can range from economic loss to catastrophic loss of life. Determining how the transportation system fares in the face of these disasters is important so that proper planning can take place before, rather than after, an event has happened. Modeling the transportation system gives operators the ability to discover bottlenecks, to determine the possible benefit of using lane reversals, and to find out the influence of evacuation speed on system efficiency. Models have already been created that are able to model some of these types of disasters with some level of accuracy. These models range from microscopic simulation to regional, macroscopic models. This research examines how an off-the-shelf regional modeling software package, TransCAD, can be used to model emergency evacuations. More specifically, this thesis presents four case studies involving three different types of disasters in Western Massachusetts. Because this research documents a first-hand experience using TransCAD in emergency evacuation planning, the results give regional modelers the ability to modify their models to fit their specific region. These case studies demonstrate how the modified inputs and existing portions of the four-step transportation planning model can be used in place of the usual data demands of the software. Dynamic traffic assignment is used in three of the case studies while the fourth case study uses static traffic assignment. An evaluation of the software package along with lessons learned is provided to measure the performance of the software.

Aplicação da logística urbana na modelagem e simulação de corredores do transporte público por ônibus / Application of logistics in urban modeling and simulation of corridors for public transport buses

Solon, Alexsandro Silva 23 March 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this paper is to model and simulate the behavior of transit in corridors of public transport by bus based on city logistics concepts using the tools of ARENA and TransCAD softwares. The bus lane used in the case study is the Avenida João Naves de Ávila, in Uberlândia (MG). To model the corridor tried to establish the equilibrium demand / supply ensuring the level of service with a maximum capacity of 80 persons and also used the concepts of city logistics for analysis, simulation and scenario generation. The model considered the arrivals and departures of passengers and the movement of buses in the corridor. These data resulted in the simulation of the corridor as passenger demand and service level adopted in the peak hour. As conclusions noted that the objective was fully achieved and the values of travel time and loading at peak hour in the ARENA software were very similar to those obtained in TransCAD.

This thesis aims to propose detours through the identification of lines of desire in the area demarcated by the vicinity of the axes Av. Primavera, Jr. The Polo and Av. The Encalada, due to the high congestion that is observed in peak times that according to the analysis that through the vehicular capacities could be identified. First, the area of study is zoned according to its use of soil, the delimitation consists of 11 zones, being 6 microzones and 5 superzones. Followed by vehicular capacity in the 4 strategic points established where there is entry of greater vehicular flow to the area. With the data obtained in field allows us to quantify the total number of surveys to be carried out at each gauging point and elaborates a matrix O-D that is determinant for the identification and the lines of desire, these lines will not help to identify Ar the types of travel so we will focus on passing trips, these are those who do not need to pass through the study area to reach their destination; The surveys are destined for every type of vehicle that circulates in the area and also for pedestrians. Once the number of surveys has been obtained, the model of the survey to be carried out with the objective of having the reasons and the modes of travel made by the users of the track is raised. Then, work is done in the cabinet, which will model in the Software TransCad the entire road network to scale and recognize all access and exits of the area. The TRANSCAD will identify the line of desire with the highest demand, and the ideal model where it manages to divert the passing of passages. The possible deviations proposed will be the left turn in Av. Angamos towards Av. Velazco Astete with Exit to the bypass, for trips from the XX zone to the ZZ area. And the closing of the U-turn on Av. Primavera between Av. Encalada and Jr. The pole. Finally, through the gravitational model you can evaluate future conditions, calibrating the parameters. And get the generation and attraction of travel for the year horizon planning in each of the defined areas. / Tesis
