Breaking the silence : the intersecting invisible experiences of Gypsy/Traveller girls in ScotlandMarcus, Geetha Doraisamy January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the educational experiences of 17 Scottish Gypsy/Traveller girls supplemented by some 30 other informants involved with education and related areas impacting Gypsy/Travellers. It incorporates published and unpublished literature on the topic and sets out a theoretical framework informed by intersectionality. The girls’ stories are highlighted and juxtaposed alongside the general problems encountered by Gypsy/Travellers in Scotland to reveal a complex narrative. This research attempts to address a gap in the literature in which Gypsy/Traveller girls’ experiences are misrecognised and erased through non-recognition. My thesis offers space for the voices of Gypsy/Traveller girls to be heard and highlights their agency in the private spaces of home and the public spaces of education. Interpretations of the image of Gypsy/Travellers in Scotland are riddled with stereotypes and racialised misperceptions and assumptions. The stubborn persistence of these negative views appears to contribute to policies of neglect, inertia or intervention that largely seeks to ‘civilise’ or further assimilate Gypsy/Travellers into the mainstream settled population. The Scottish Government's Race Equality Statement (2009) accepts that Gypsy/Travellers are ‘a particularly discriminated against and marginalised group’. Within education, research by Wilkin et al. (2009) indicates that Gypsy/Traveller children are the lowest achieving minority group in the United Kingdom. There is currently no research that explores how girls and young women from Gypsy/Traveller communities fare in Scottish schools, and what they think of their experiences. It is against this backdrop that this qualitative inquiry seeks to explore how Gypsy/Traveller girls frame their educational experiences. I argue that traditional unidimensional approaches to investigating experiences of discrimination are inadequate, particularly within marginalised communities. Interview data collected for this doctoral study was analysed, identifying common themes that characterise the experiences of the Gypsy/Traveller girls and the ways in which their experiences differ and various subordinations intersect.

In many parts of the world today, drivers have access to a growing range of traveller information services, from traffic reports on the radio and variable message signs along roads to customised information that could be delivered to personal mobile phones and PDAs (personal digital assistants) as well as to the global navigation units appearing in many vehicles.
The key commercial question is, what information does the driver want? So far, while traveller information services deliver increasingly sophisticated incident reports, journey times and other such information, driver response has remained lukewarm. This thesis suggests that the problem lies in understanding the driver rather than improving the content. Therefore, it has sought to establish: Q1. What do drivers already know?; Q2. How did they learn it?; Q3. What do drivers need now and in the future as they continue to learn?
And for traveller information service providers, the related question:
Q4. How can information providers accommodate drivers' learning?
This thesis reports a qualitative case study based on ten in-depth interviews with drivers who had previously participated in a six week trial receiving customised traveller information about their commutes to and from work, through their mobile phones.
The thesis reports that drivers principally learn from their experiences in processes well established in the adult learning literature. It has found that commuter drivers can be regarded as experts on their commutes, but that the domain of any drivers' expertise is limited both spatially and temporally.
When presented with dynamic, customised traveller information, it was found that commuter drivers enter a learning curve affected by previous experience and immediate need in which learning to access and utilise appropriate travel information is a dynamic process. Drivers learn about using traveller information, they learn about the types of traveller information available and they also learn whether to trust the information provider.
As adults who learn and think, drivers see the role of an information service provider as facilitating their own understanding of the phenomena of traffic they face everyday and, in turn, supporting their learning to make better informed decisions. The thesis concludes that customised traveller information will become effective when it meets the current understanding and needs of the driver as an active learner whose information requirements change over time and from time to time.
This thesis contributes to an increased understanding of drivers, their knowledge and how they learn. As a result, it offers traveller information providers with a substantially increased understanding of how to meet their drivers' needs.

Förebygga turistdiarré : - är råden kring kost och vaccin evidensbaserade? / Prevention of traveller´s diarrhoea : - is the advice given on diet and vaccine evidence based?Kodeda, Marika January 2012 (has links)
Resandet mellan länder ökar allt mer och många resor går från rikare till fattigare länder i tropiska och subtropiska områden. De resande möter ett annat panorama av sjukdomar än i hemlandet och det vanligaste hälsoproblemet bland resenärer är turistdiarré. Inför resan söker många råd på en vaccinationsmottagning. Råd ges bland annat kring kost och vaccin för att förhindra turistdiarré. Syftet med studien var att undersöka det vetenskapliga underlaget för att sjuksköterskor skall kunna ge evidensbaserade råd kring kosthållning och vaccination för att undvika turistdiarré. Sökningar i framför allt PubMed och Cinahl utmynnade i 15 kvantitativa artiklar som kom att utgöra material till litteraturstudiens resultat. Litteraturen gav motstridiga svar på frågan om kostrådens betydelse för att förhindra turistdiarré. Resultaten antydde att risken för att insjukna varierade med ålder, resans duration och destination. Resultatet visade vidare att det finns ett vaccin med viss effekt mot turistdiarré. Färre vaccinerade insjuknade och de som insjuknade var sjuka kortare tid. Vaccinet skyddade framför allt mot svårare diarrésjukdom. De studier som fanns gjorda på området var få och i många fall relativt gamla. Fler studier behövs för att säkrare slutsatser skall kunna dras som underlag för individuellt anpassade evidensbaserade råd. / Travel between countries continues to increase and many trips go from richer to poorer countries in tropical and subtropical areas. Travellers meet a different spectrum of diseases than in their home countries and the most common health problem among travellers is travellers´diarrhoea. It is common among travellers to seek advice at a travel clinic prior to the trip. Advice is given on, among other things, diet and vaccine to prevent travellers´ diarrhoea. The aim of this literature study was to investigate the evidence base to enable nurses to provide evidence based advice on diet and vaccine to prevent travellers´ diarrhoea. The search for articles in mainly PubMed and Cinahl lead to 15 quantitative articles, which constituted material for the result of the literature study. The literature gave contradictory answers to the question of the significance of dietary advice. The results indicated that the risk for travellers´ diarrhoea varied with age, duration of the trip and destination. The results further showed that there is a vaccine with some effect against travellers´ diarrhoea. There was a lower incidence rate among the vaccinated and the ones who did contract travellers´ diarrhoea were ill during a shorter period of time. The vaccine protected mainly against more severe diarrhoea. The studies carried out on the area were few and in many cases relatively old. More studies are needed to enable assertive conclusions as material for individually suited evidence based advice.

Subsequent to the growing need for internationally mobile talent, alternative forms of international assignees have arisen (Collings, Scullion and Morley 2007; PricewaterhouseCoopers 2010). This study focuses on such newly appointed internationally working employees, particularly International Business Travellers (abbreviated to IBTs). Inspired by a lack of research attention relating to this labour population, this DBA project opens up the black7box of the IBT working partnership. This is achieved by surveying the role of the IBT as well as the distinctiveness and the state of the psychological contract that the employees involved have with their current employer. The research described and substantiated in this work was devised from the IBT’s perspective, and occurs within a Belgian context. Consistent with a – methodologically revitalising – interpretive phenomenological framework, the study was operationalised on the basis of qualitative, semi7structured interviews with nine IBTs. The thematic data analysis carried out indicated the multifarious, intercultural and strategic role of the IBT, and brought skills specifically characterising the IBT to light. The IBT psychological contract was summarised by eighteen content7related obligations, which contemporaneously display contrasts and similarities with related reference research. The contract in question proved to be evaluated generally positively by the research participants and to develop itself in a unique manner through a noteworthy relational base mixed with a non7negligible transactional facet. Along with a discussion of the principal insights found/contributions made, this thesis includes a number of study limitations, recommendations for further research and implications for successful IBT psychological contract management. Personal reflections are, where relevant, also provided throughout this work.

Credibility of Electronic Word of Mouth in the Social Commerce Context: The Case of TripAdvisorNasser, Layla 04 July 2023 (has links)
Background: Online reviews generated by consumers are a vital source of information driving purchase decisions by consumers. Nevertheless, identifying the credibility of online reviews remains an obstacle, since not all online reviews are credible. This paper aims to determine the influence of credibility on the consumption of eWOM and S-eWOM in the tourism industry.
Design/Methodology: This research provides an in-depth analysis of the insider experience connected to challenges facing travelers (customers) to evaluate online reviews and grant credibility to eWOM in the TripAdvisor platform. Specifically, this research explored the end-user experience and the role of social media in providing new opportunities to help customers overcome challenges they face in trusting eWOM and S-eWOM, in addition to the possible influence of COVID-19 in shaping participants’ credibility judgment. Guided by a qualitative approach, this interpretive study is conducted through an observation using the walkthrough and interviews with 18 participants from uOttawa. Nvivo12 software was used to organize, categorize, and analyze the data.
Results: This study draws on Media Richness theory to provide a broad theoretical lens and a grounded theory approach which uncovered Two fundamental theories: the four maxims of cooperative principles by Grice and the Big Five personality traits to help interpret findings. Using thematic analysis, five main themes were uncovered: (1) Quality and quantity of the content, (2) Consumer, (3) Credibility and expertise of the communicator, (4) The platform, product type, and COVID-19 (context), and (5) The strength of social tie in the community.
Research Limitations/Implications: The inability to generalize the data due to a small sample of respondents is a limitation of this research. Outcomes can help tourism managers support the reviews that accommodate a balanced view of the positive and negative aspects of travel-related products and services.

Margeado pela reversão entre ficção e crítica este romance breve afirma-se como referência ilusória que mascara, mas não esconde, as outras vozes que se insinuam na narrativa / The present study is an analysis of the elements and strategies which constitutes Antonio Tabucchi\'s prose, specifically observed in the novel Notturno Indiano. The novel\'s plot is about a journey in which a search for somebody who got lost in India suggests a detective question. This detective story will be treated in consonance with the investigative method which is insinuated through the whole text, and its relation with the deviation of a chapter. Framed by the reverse between fiction and criticism, this short novel shows itself as an illusory reference that masks but does not hide the other voices which insinuate themselves into the narrative

Learning on the Run: Traveller Education for Itinerant Show Children in Coastal and Western QueenslandDanaher, Patrick Alan, danaher@usq.edu.au January 2001 (has links)
Learning on the Run refers to the educational experiences of the primary
school children travelling along the agricultural show circuits in coastal and
western Queensland. This thesis examines those educational experiences by
drawing on the voices of the show children, their parents, their home tutors
and their teachers from the Brisbane School of Distance Education, which
from 1989 to 1999 implemented a specialised program of Traveller education
for these children (in 2000 a separate school was established for them).
The thesis focusses on the interplay among marginalisation, resistance
and transformation in the spaces of the show peoples itinerancy. It deploys
Michel de Certeaus (1984, 1986) concept of tactics of consumption and
Mikhail Bakhtins (1986a) notions of outsiddness and creative understanding
to interrogate the show peoples engagement with their absence of
place, the construction of their otherness and forms of seemingly
unproblematic knowledge about their schooling. Data gathering techniques
included semi-structured interviews with forty-two people between 1992 and
2000 in seven sites in Queensland - Mackay, Bundaberg (over two years),
Emerald, Brisbane, Rockhampton and Yeppoon - and document collection.
The thesiss major finding is that the show peoples resistance and
transformation of their marginalising experiences have enabled them to initiate
and implement a significant counternarrative to the traditional narrative (and
associated stereotypes) attending their itinerancy. This counternarrative has
underpinned a fundamental change in their schooling provision, from a
structure that worked to marginalise and disempower them to a specialised
form of Traveller education. This change contributes crucially to understanding
and theorising the spaces of itinerancy, and highlights the broader
significance of the Queensland show peoples learning on the run.
