Spatial and temporal variation in trophic structure of the Nueces Marsh, TX

Wallace, Sarah Caitlin 05 October 2011 (has links)
Salt marsh food webs are complex systems, with high levels of in situ primary production supporting a wealth of resident and migratory species. In this study, we use stable isotopes as a tool to trace organic matter utilization within the Nueces Marsh food web. Specifically, we were interested in (1) the use of treated wastewater as a ¹⁵N tracer, and (2) seasonal and interannual variation in food web structure. We hypothesized that treated wastewater would selectively label detrital resourse use within the food web, allowing us to trace grazing vs. detrital pathways within the marsh system. We also hypothesized that marsh consumers would exhibit distinct differences in isotopic composition between summer and winter, and between different years. We found that the Nueces Marsh food web consists of 3.5 consumer trophic levels. The [delta]¹³C values of consumer organisms were similar across the spatial extent of the low marsh, regardless of proximity to wastewater inflow. However, a majority of the organisms collected from the wastewater channel were significantly (p<0.05) enriched in ¹⁵N compared to their reference counterparts. We propose that ¹⁵N-enriched nitrogen is entering the Nueces Marsh food web through detrital rather than grazing-based pathways, making wastewater effluent an effective tracer of detrital integration into a marsh food web system. Hydrologic data indicate that isotopic shifts between seasons and between years reflected larger scale shifts between drought and wet years. During drought years, decreased production by phytoplankton and emergent plants led consumers to rely more heavily on ¹³C-enriched cyanobacterial carbon. In contrast, wet years encourage phytoplankton and emergent plant production, making cyanobacterial carbon relatively less exploited. While the Nueces Marsh food web is supported by a stable detrital carbon pool, it may still be susceptible to larger scale hydrologic events. / text

The fish composition was determined by collecting fish from 10 specific areas along the River Gramame, utilizing diversified fishery techniques, during the dry and rainy seasons of 2010 to 2011. The fish collected was transported to the Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology (DSE/CCEN/UFPB), where biometry of fish was carried out (total weight and standard length), to determine the type of growth and condition factor, with a view to compare these parameters in contaminated fish. The food habits of the fish were determined by analyzing the stomach contents using the frequency of occurrence method. This was useful to understand the food chain which served as a base for the study of bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fish. The ecological diversity was determined from the indices of diversity (Shannon-Wiener), equitability (Simpson), similarity (Jaccard) and species richness. The concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu) in the fish muscle were quantified by square wave voltammetry (VOQ) in a potentiostat/galvanostat in the Laboratory of Environmental Chemical Studies (DQ/CCEN/UFPB), and total mercury (Hg) by atomic absorption spectrometry with cold vapor (CV AAS) in IPEN/USP/SP. The fish composition of the upstream area showed lower taxa than the downstream area (16 to 26 genera and 17 to 27 species, respectively). The abundant species were, Cichla ocellaris (55.39%±28.96), Metynnis lippincottiannus (20.34%±13.4), Prochilodus brevis (16.63%±11.36) and Hoplias malabaricus (13.33%±7.57), during both seasons of the year. The indices of diversity showed differences between the rainy and dry seasons and the upstream and the downstream areas of the reservoir (H =1.3075; H =1.538), (H =1.6497; H =1.3553), with richness represented (17 to 26 and 18 to 22 species respectively) and a heterogeneous distribution of species (J =0.52269 and J =0.38618 respectively), due to the dominance of C. ocellaris in upstream and of M. lippincottianus in downstream of the reservoir. The growth rate of most of the species analyzed showed young individuals, indicating negative allometric growth. The diet of the species showed little difference, indicating mostly generalist food habits of fish along River Gramame. The principal component analysis (PCA) expressed a tendency in upstream and downstream areas of the reservoir to differ in terms of heavy metal accumulation in the trophic chain. A major contamination of total mercury was registered in the upstream area, while there was lead and zinc contamination in the downstream area of the reservoir. It could be concluded that along River Gramame there is major dominance of exotic species with a low diversity of native species. The feeding habits of the fish species showed a generalist tendency, with more omnivores. High heavy metal concentration was registered in the omnivores, indicating biomagnifications of toxic elements among the studied species.

The fish fauna of tropical streams is very diversified and related to structural factors of the watercourses, but quite few is known about its happening in the northern Mato Grosso streams. My goal was to test how the fish assemblage abundance, richness and composition are related to with the streams structural variation and how the assemblage trophic groups are related to with the streams structural variation. The fishes were collected actively in stretches of 150 meters in 10 first and second order streams, in Teles Pires river basin, Cláudia-MT. Streams structural characteristics were also measured in the same sections. The species were separated into trophic groups based on stomach contents. Multivariate analyzes were performed to determine if the streams hydraulic characteristics (e.g. width, depth, flow) and substrate type influenced the distribution of species and trophic groups. The fish assemblage was composed by 24 species, which were found found from two to 11 species per stream. 317 specimens were collected, the order Characiformes was the most abundant with 43,2% of the total and eight species, followed by Siluriformes with 10 species and 37,5%, 12,9% and Gymnotiformes with two species. The fish fauna was classified into six trophic groups. The most abundant trophic group was the generalist insectivores with 123 exemplars, but the group with more species was the autochthonous insectivores with nine species. Width, depth and velocity of the streams were the most important characteristics for the structuring of fish in streams. There was a negative relationship between the composition of fish assemblages in abundance and structure of streams, which may be the result of species replacement process as well as a species addition process. However the species richness had a positive relationship with the streams structure, which can be a result of an increased number of microhabitats and the entry of species that occupy different trophic niches. Trophic analysis also revealed that the same structural features of water bodies are related to the richness of trophic groups per stream. The mass of trophic groups was not related to the streams structure. The increased size of the streams can allow the occurrence of a greater number of dominant species, opposed to the limiting effect of different species population size in small streams, strongly oligotrophic. This scenario compared to the fish assemblage structure in relation to the creeks draws attention to the necessity of forest fragments conservation where these water bodies are inserted.

The Northwest region of São Paulo, as well as adjacent microregions, lacks concise information on the floristic composition and wildlife, especially the avifauna. This condition coupled with the high degree of environmental degradation presented incostestável favors the loss of biodiversity. Most of the interior of forest remnants are represented by small patches of forest, mostly isolated daz times inhospitable matrix as the cultivation of sugar cane and pasture. The forest types represented by seasonal forest type Semidecidual cover most of the state of Sao Paulo, and thus reflect a relatively strong seasonal table with two very distinct periods of drought and rain. This seasonal condition interferes with many aspects of life history fauna inserted into the region, especially birds and arthropods. In this sense, I try here to describe the community structure of birds in a forest remnant of just over 2,400 ha, with inferences to the degree of endemism of some species, conservation status and threat, and dependence on forest habitats. Still, in the second time it was taken to analyze and evaluate the effects of seasonality and availability of invertebrate prey for the community as a whole, but especially the insectivores. Altogether 171 species were recorded in the study area, 95 and 76 in the remaining forest in the surrounding areas have included aquatic and anthropogenic environments. Seven species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, 22 showing some degree of threat and 28 species of forest-dependent. The xiii results demonstrated for seasonal relationships are different for different guilds, and their populations ranging frugivores had more than insectivores and omnivores between the dry and rainy seasons. The species richness was significantly correlated with invertebrate abundance of foliage. The breeding season of birds recorded in the remaining forest... Their control is very complex, after introduction, these nematodes cannot be eradicated. Therefore, understanding how management practices affects nematode community structure and the spatial variability of their populations will improve effectiveness of long term measures. This work had as objective to evaluate variations on plant-parasitic nematodes structure and spatial distribution and cultivation area of cowpea after guava orchard eradication. The study was carried out at Nossa Senhora do Rosário Farm in Pesqueira municipality in Pernambuco State. Soil and roots samples were collected in 2012 and 2015, in a 10×10-m mesh with 64 points, being data submitted to Geostatistical analysis. Before guava eradication, only Meloidogyne in soil presented high level of spatial dependence, fitting to exponential model. After cowpea cultivation, each Pratylenchus and Helicotylenchus populations turn to high level of spatial dependence in soil, with the exponential model as best fit, as well the bacterivorus, particularly Rhabditidae, except Gaussian model fitted best. Meloidogyne density in soil was low showing no spatial dependency, in contrast to roots, where Meloidogyne spatial dependency was moderate, fitting to spherical model. In both periods, the range of all nematode genera was longer than 10 m. The use of a non adequate management, as the introduction of a susceptible host, as cowpea, increased density and dissemination of important plant parasitic nematodes in the field.

Trophic structure analyses of biological communities provide insights on ecosystem organization and functioning and also on communities’ interactions. Comparing the trophic structure of communities considering environmental gradients allows new interpretations of their trophic organization and evaluation of current and future anthropic impacts. One of the most common methods to evaluate trophic relationships is the stable isotope analysis (SIA), which has been used to estimate the flow of organic matter among consumers as well as its trophic position in the food chain. The main objective of this Master Thesis was to investigate the trophic structure of shallow areas fish assemblage along a freshwater-estuarine gradient, using the analysis of carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N) isotope ratios of basal food sources (i.e., plants with C3 and C4 photosynthesis and particulate organic matter POM) and dominant fishes in each system. Basal food sources, fishes and invertebrates were collected at Lagoa dos Patos estuary, São Gonçalo Channel and Lagoa Mirim, located in the southern most in Brazil, during spring and summer seasons of 2009 and 2010. Biplots and isotopic metrics (Convex hull and isotopic niche) were used to describe and compare the trophic structure obtained in the three environments. Correlation analyzes were conducted to examine the relationship between total length (TL) of the ichthyofauna and trophic position (TP). Bayesian models of isotopic mixing were used to evaluate the variability in food resource use by the one-sided livebearer Jenynsia multidentata along the environmental gradient, which was one of the only species found along the entire gradient. The total area (Convex hull) and the isotopic niche occupied by the fish assemblage showed an marked variation among environments. The Convex hull total area of the estuary (CH: 50.28) was two-fold higher than the Channel and Lagoa Mirim areas (17,51 and 20.29, respectively). The isotopic niche, which is not affected by differences in sample sizes, showed statistical differences between the estuary and the two freshwater systems ( (p<0.00), but there were no statistical differences when the freshwater systems were compared with each other (p>0.30). The SIA analysis of fishes in the Channel suggests that the habitat fragmentation caused by a dam also affected the trophic connectivity between the Lagoa dos Patos estuary and the Lagoa Mirim. Comparison of the nitrogen isotope ratio values among communities also suggested that anthropogenic impacts (e.g., eutrophication) were more evident in the Lagoa dos Patos estuary and Channel. The analysis of correlations didn't show any positive correlation between TL and TP. The mixing model showed that the main basal food sources sustaining J. multidentata in the Channel was POM, whereas in the Lagoa Mirim was mainly C4 plants and POM. Moreover, in the estuary, it was found a greater overlap on the credibility intervals of basal food sources and it was not possible to distinguish statistical differences between their relative contributions to the specie. Our results showed that there are differences on the trophic structure and on the use of food resources along the environmental gradient. Also, anthropogenic impacts, such as dam constructions and eutrophication, have an affect on the ichthyofauna of these environments.

These questions are very discussed associated with impacted environments with differentiated characteristics such as hydroelectric plant reservoirs, whose damming affects the forms of trophic interactions of the remaining post-dam species. About the interactions of predation, it is known that some abiotic factors such as temperature and water transparency participate in the mediation of foraging, which may favor predatory success and increases in the proportion of predators in relation to prey. For this reason, considering that excessive increases of predators may threaten the trophic balance of communities, as well as environmental exclusions presented by impacted systems such as reservoirs, this study evaluated through logistic models, if during a period of 36 months thermal elevations and visibility Of the water corresponded to increases in the proportion of piscivorous fish in relation to non piscivorous fish, taking as reference 17 neotropical reservoirs. The results showed an increase of about 14% in the proportion of piscivorous when correlated to higher values of temperature and transparency acting together, indicating that small positive changes in these variables may be sufficient to increase the proportion of these predators. The discussions focused on the relationships between environmental variables and predatory events.
