Duality and the Parallel Lives

Takizawa, Hiromi 12 May 2010 (has links)
My engagement with making is a metaphor that contains the interior landscapes of my mind. I continue to explore it by comparing and contrasting exterior and interior, investigating surface and depth, covering and exposing, and taking apart and putting together. I work to translate my individual experiences and emotions into a tangible form. The visual dialogues that I engage in with my work explore a range of aspects that are inherent and specific to my Japanese cultural heritage. It often springs from my daily encounters with the subtle nuances and observable oddities of living in the “West”. These experiences have added to my self-awareness, and my sense of identity. I’ve always been fascinated by the visual phenomenon that occurs when light is transmitted, reflected, and/or refracted on/in/and through glass materials. I integrate these observable optical phenomena into personal narratives; by using “the-perceptional-shifts” that only the quality of glass it-self can generate, I transform my emotions into concrete materiality. The body of work that has developed over the past two years focuses on integrating my experiences, emotions and feelings, distance and time, and memories of and longing for my twin sister. I marry new technology with old, and attempting to bring the sensitivity of craft to new methods of making. Embedded in this work is my passion for life, materials, and making.

Twin Core: An Exploration of Twins in the Wizarding World

Eshleman, Carol R 16 May 2014 (has links)
The motif of twins is one that permeates strongly throughout the Harry Potter series. Fred and George as a pair are immensely popular with fans, and the “very curious” twinship of Harry and Voldemort’s wands is a relationship greatly explored in the saga. In my paper, I shall further explore this prominent Potter motif and delve into the origins and symbolism behind this twinship. I will also recall the dark conclusion to the tale of the Weasley twins. The death of Fred as related to the series’ theme as a whole and the death of Harry in the attempt to remove his parasitic twin, Voldemort’s unintended horcrux, will be discussed. There will also be exploration of missing and broken twins, for example, where is Romulus since we know a Remus? Why are Padma and Parvati in different houses? What is the symbolism of Harry’s broken wand? I will discuss how Voldemort’s creation of horcruxes is an intentional twinning of his self, and thus a mutation of nature. An exploration of numerology in relation to this twin discussion will also be included. This paper will show that the motif of twins is not just an interesting addition to the Potter novels but rather a tie-in to the story’s core of insisting on duality when the truth is in wholeness.

The rotational evolution of Sun-like stars and the influence of low-mass binary companions / A evolução rotacional de gêmeas solares e a influência de companheiras binárias de baixa massa

Santos, Leonardo Augusto Gonçalves dos 31 July 2017 (has links)
The Solar Twin Planet Search program is an unprecedented eort that aimed to procure extrasolar planets in more than 70 stars extremely similar to the Sun. In the course of this program, hundreds of high-quality optical spectra were obtained for these stars using the HARPS spectrograph, which is fed by the ESO La Silla 3.6 m telescope. Beyond the search for exoplanets, the data are invaluable to study the physical properties of Sun-like stars. Particularly in this dissertation, we are interested in verifying if the Sun possesses a regular rotation for its age among stars that are strictly similar to it, how the rotation of solar twins evolve with age and if the rotation of Sun-like stars is influenced by the presence of stellar mass companions. Previous conclusions on the regularity of the Suns rotation have been conflicting, and this is the first time such a large sample of solar twins with high quality spectroscopic data is used to clarify this puzzle. Our results suggest that the Sun is indeed a regular rotator for its age, which favors the use of the solar rotation to calibrate gyrochronology -- the estimation of stellar ages from their rotation. However, these results also imply a rotational evolution process that saturates after the solar age, constituting a departure from the widely used Skumanich relation and posing a challenge for gyrochronology. We securely identified 18 binary or multiple systems in the solar twin sample, of which only three display enhanced rotation for their ages. I estimated the orbital parameters of the binaries from their radial velocity variations, and the results show that their spectroscopic companions lie at orbital periods varying from a few to several years. I conclude that the presence of red or brown dwarf companions at moderate to long orbital periods do not influence the evolution of rotation in these systems, and therefore the main stars should evolve as single in this regard. The peculiarities in HIP 19911, HIP 67620 and HIP 103983 can be fully explained by spectral contamination from their companions.

Especificidades na constituição psíquica de gêmeos: um estudo exploratório / Specificities in the psychic constitution of twins: an exploratory study

Cangueiro, Larissa 22 March 2019 (has links)
Ampliou-se a compreensão da necessidade de acolhimento às famílias gemelares e suporte para o processo de constituição psíquica dos gêmeos / This dissertation is justified by the fact that there is an expansion of 7.83% (from 1995 to 2016) in twin births, adjoined with the biological and psychic risks that are found - twin pregnancies have a greater number of perinatal complications that may interfere in these initial relationships - as well as the scarcity of published literature on the subject culminating in the necessity to better understand and answer the twin developmental questions. The purpose in this study is to investigate and debate how the specificities in the psychic twin constitution; seek to explore the interaction and relation between twins; as study and discuss the emotional experience of being a twin´s mother and her psychic disponibilities for the babies. The research had an exploratory character, which meetings with the mother and their twin babies were realized, in a ludic familiar situation, supported and executed by the researcher with the semi structured interviews, as well the observation of their free routine. These meetings were realized monthly by 15 months and the interviews were audiotaped and later transcribed. The parsing of the collected information was realized from the content analysis technique, as the theoretical referential for the winnicottian psychoanalysis. In the constituted categories it was presented as a result: In the Legacy\'s force was observed non-preparation and the shock with the arrival of the twins to the family, essentially in the mother, because some psychic unavailability for more than one baby at the same time was perceived. In the relation with the two daughters unconscious aspects and double messages were observed, which created obstacles to the exercise of the parental function and the development of the baby; in Environmental Aspects paradoxical messages were startled in the attempts of the mother to differentiate the daughters, at times separating them, sometimes joining them. Conflicts and failures of identification with the maternal figure and difficulties of subjectivizing children were identified, bringing a constant agitation of the environment that met the needs while failing, frustrating, conducting to exhaustion and confusions. It is possible to assert that even if this mother presented herself differently for the two daughters, receiving one of the daughters in a more available form, she was still Good Enough for both; in Developing Psychic World both presented the behaviors described as \"twin situation\". As for Emotional Maturity, both traced the paths proposed by Winnicott through the phase of absolute dependence, in which it was possible to identify a mother in affective tuning in her state of primary maternal preoccupation, which enabled the twins to experience the fantasy of omnipotence. And they walked towards relative dependence in which they already recognize the environment as external to them, to integrate that mother who was before divided between the welcoming and absent and thwarting. The fact that at 1 year and 4 months they did not identify their own names attracted attention, as well as an attachment and dependence between them. The understanding of the need to host twin families was broadened, as the support for the process of psychic constitution of the twins

Classroom Placement of Twins Triplets and Other Multiples in Grades Kindergarten Through Eight in East Tennessee Schools: East Tennessee Principals Perceptions.

Parton, Joy Brown 17 August 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to learn from kindergarten- through 8th-grade principals in East Tennessee (a) what policies guide their decisions regarding classroom placement for multiple-birth children; (b) what postsecondary training they have; (c) what sources guide their decisions; (d) what knowledge they have of the needs, relationships, and bonds of multiples; and (e) what their perceptions are regarding how to best meet the needs of multiples. Data were collected through interviews with a purposeful sample of 10 principals of kindergarten- through 8th-grade schools. Five themes emerged forming constructs for organizational framework: (a) learning environment, (b) meeting individual needs, (c) communication, (d) culture, and (e) perceptions. Based on the research, the following conclusions were presented: Prior to Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-3102, effective July 1, 2010, none of the school systems had placement policies. Most principals had no postsecondary or graduate school training specific to and were not knowledgeable of the educational psychology of multiples or implications regarding their developmental, emotional, and academic issues. Most said on-the-job training was their only instruction. Few principals were aware of the needs, relationships, and bonds of multiples. Principals stated their conviction that separating multiples would promote individuality and foster independence. Findings from this study might result in colleges modifying their teachers' education curriculum to include the educational psychology of multiples and implications regarding their developmental, emotional, and academic issues. Principals currently serving should enlighten themselves regarding the educational psychology of multiples to include the dynamics of the multiples' relationships and the bond that exists between them. School districts should provide education for staff regarding the development of multiples. Principals should recognize parents of multiples as their best source of guidance and look to school psychologists as resources. It is recommended that principals work with families, become more acquainted with multiples, and seek their opinions when making decisions that affect them. It is recommended that if principals want to help multiples become independent and develop as individuals, they should learn to tell them apart and call them by their individual names rather than twin or triplet.

Identical confusion : the history of twin studies on sexual orientation, 1952-1973

Boltseridge, Nathan H. 17 June 2004 (has links)
In 1952, at the height of the McCarthy era, Franz Kallmann, a Jewish psychiatrist and eugenicist who fled the National Socialist regime in Germany, published a study, in which he claimed to have found a one hundred percent concordance rate for homosexuality among forty pairs of identical twins. From this data, Kallmann concluded that homosexuality, which he saw as a pathological mental condition, had a genetic cause. As well as being a clear statement that sexual orientation is constitutionally based, Kallmann's study also reflected social and scientific conceptions of lesbians and gay men that had been extant for centuries. The twin study perpetuated the portrayal of homosexual women and men as insane in general, and in particular continued the stereotype that lesbians were masculine and that gay men were effeminate. Seven responses to Kallmann's study were published between 1960 and 1973, some in support of his genetic theory, others favoring environmental explanations based loosely on psychoanalytic theories. The environmental argument eventually gained ground in twin studies in the late 1960s concurrent with the widespread acceptance in the psychiatric community of the theory that homosexuality is caused by dysfunctional relationships between parents and children. The seven twin studies that responded to Kallmann retained his characterization of lesbians and gay men as gender transgressors. Simultaneously, homosexual activist groups began to question the pathological model of sexual orientation. Twin studies of this type ended in 1973, the same year that the American Psychiatric Association reversed its position on homosexuality and removed it from the diagnostic manual. / Graduation date: 2005
