The predictive value of psychological type and self-monitoring on emergent leadership

Recent studies (Zaccaro, Foti, and Kenny, 1991; Rueb and Foti, in press) have found a relationship between self-monitoring, a measure of response flexibility, and emergent leadership. The present study re-examined this issue, introducing the hypothesis that psychological type may act as a moderator in the relationship. Subjects completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the revised Self-Monitoring scale, and four group tasks. After each task, subjects rated each other on perceived leadership. Results indicated that 73% of leadership ratings, and 54% of a rankings measure was stable and due to characteristics of the individual. The relationship between self-monitoring and emergent leadership was not found, thus the interaction between self-monitoring and type with emergent leadership could not be tested. There was a relationship between self-monitoring and agreement in ratings of perceived leadership. Implications of inaccurate ratings are discussed with respect to the emergent leadership/self-monitoring issue. / Master of Science

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between problem solving style as measured by the Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) and achievement in College Chemistry. It was postulated that preferences measured by the MBTI would increase the variance explained by the predictive tool currently in use. The sample population was taken from a suburban community college. It was found that problem solving style does increase the variance explained by the currently used predictive tool. There is a non-simplistic relationship between problem solving style as measured by the MBTI and achievement in College Chemistry. The problem solving characteristics of successful and unsuccessful students, as well as those who withdraw, were documented. Some of the relationships found were the same as those reported in MBTI literature; others were contrary to expectations based on the MBTI literature. / Ph. D.

The purposes of this study were to: (a) determine the distribution of personality temperament types of the study population of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers, (b) determine the degree of job satisfaction expressed by West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers, (c) determine the distribution of job satisfaction among West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers by temperament type, (d) determine the distribution of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers’ temperament types by selected demographic variables, and (e) determine the relationship between West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers’ satisfaction and selected demographic variables. The study population of 63 vocational agriculture teachers who attended the 1988 West Virginia Vocational Conference were each provided with a packet of questionnaires. Temperament types were determined using Form G of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and job satisfaction by the short form of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ). Demographics were surveyed using an instrument developed for that purpose by the researcher. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS-X). Frequencies, means, and correlation coefficients (Pearson Product Moment and Kendall Tau) were the procedures utilized to answer the research questions. Major conclusions were as follows: (a) the majority of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers were of the sensing-judging temperament type and the smallest group was the intuitive type, (b) West Virginia agriculture teachers were more satisfied with intrinsic than extrinsic job factors, (c) overall, West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers were satisfied with intrinsic job factors and moderately satisfied with their work in terms of general satisfaction, (d) West Virginia teachers were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with extrinsic job factors, (e) teachers of the sensing-perceiving temperament type were the least satisfied on extrinsic and general job factors, (f) West Virginia teachers of the sensing-judging type were the oldest teachers and sensing-perceiving were the youngest, (g) teachers with sensing personality styles were more likely to hold advanced degrees than those with intuitive temperament types, (h) there was little relationship between the variables of age, educational level, years of experience, or number of teachers in a department and job satisfaction of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers, (i) married West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers were more satisfied with their jobs than single teachers, and (j) teachers with intuitive-thinking personality types had the least teaching experience of the four Keirsey temperament types. / Ed. Personality Characteristics of Counselor Education Graduate Students as Measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Bem Sex Role Inventory

This study was designed to investigate the correlation of the variables of gender, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality preferences, and androgyny as measured by the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) in Counselor Education graduate students. Instruments were administered to Counselor Education graduate students at nine institutions in five national regions. A total of 172 participants (18 males and 154 females) who were enrolled in Master's level theories courses or practicum courses completed a student information sheet, informed consent, MBTI, and BSRI. Instruments were hand scored and chi-square test was used to determine significance of the hypotheses; the saturated model of log linear analysis was the statistic used for the research question. As predicted, of the sixteen MBTI types, the most common for Counselor Education graduate students emerged as ENFP: extraversion, intuition, feeling, and perception. Additionally, this MBTI type was found to be significantly more common among the population of Counselor Education graduate students than is found among the general population. The expectation that more male Counselor Education graduate students would score higher on the androgyny scale of the BSRI was unsupported; low sample size for male Counselor Education graduate students prevented use of chi-square; however, it was apparent through the use of the statistic of raw frequencies that males clustered around every other category except androgyny. The hypothesis that more female Counselor Education graduate students would score higher on the feminine scale was also unsupported, as equal distribution of the females occurred within all four categories of the BSRI. It was hypothesized that males with a sensing and thinking preference on the MBTI would tend toward the masculine dimension of the BSRI more than males with an intuitive and feeling preference. This was unsupported as well. Female Counselor Education graduate students with an intuitive and feeling preference did, however, demonstrate a greater tendency toward the feminine classification on the BSRI than did females with a sensing and thinking preference, so that this hypothesis was retained. No significant relationship was found between the variables of MBTI type, BSRI classification, and gender.

Dark tetrad personality types and sexual behaviours amongst African students

(Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / The present study investigated the gender moderated relationship between the dark tetrad personality types and sexual behaviours among African university students. Two studies were conducted using conveniently selected samples from two universities in Limpopo, South Africa. Both studies were quantitative in nature using a cross-sectional research design. An integrative theoretical approach was utilized in the conceptualization of the studies, and data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The first study (N = 261) determined the relationship between the dark tetrad personality types and sexual behaviours conceptualized as infidelity, sexual aggression, and sociosexuality. It was only sadism that had the capacity to predict infidelity and SOI-R desire. Regarding moderation, the results showed that gender only moderates the associations between Machiavellianism and SOI-R behaviour, psychopathy and SOI-R attitude, and sadism and infidelity. The second study (N = 275) examined if the relationship between the Dark Tetrad personality types and socio-sexuality would be mediated by adversarial sexual beliefs (ASB) and ambivalent sexism (benevolent [BS] and hostile sexism [HS]). Results showed that the relationship between sadism and SOI-R behaviour and desire, Machiavellianism and SOI-R behaviour and desire were fully mediated by BS, and the association between sadism and all the SOI-R components, Machiavellianism and all the SOI-R components, and psychopathy and all the SOI-R components were fully mediated ASB. Additionally, gender only moderated the ASB mediated associations between sadism and SOI-R behaviour, and sadism and SOI-R attitude. The relationship between cognitive styles and personality types

The general purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between cognitive styles and personality types in order to gain insight into the placement of leaders within the context of current and future organisational demands. The study was conducted among 123 managers within the information technology environment of a South African financial institution. Data was collected by means of the Cognitive Process Profile (CPP) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Supporting evidence, although not sufficient, indicates a probable relationship between cognitive styles and personality types. The assumption can therefore be made that the relationship between cognitive styles and personality types will be more pronounced among a more geographically distributed sample group which includes sufficient diverse respondents regarding the different cognitive styles and personality types. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / MCOM (Industrial Psychology)
