Unaccompanied Children in the United States: Mental Health, Adversity and Employment as Markers of Immigrant IntegrationHasson III, Robert G. January 2019 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Thomas M. Crea / Unaccompanied children have arrived at the US border in increasing numbers since 2012, reaching a peak of 59,692 children apprehended at the US border in 2016. This dissertation includes three studies to better understand the characteristics of integration as experienced by unaccompanied children who arrive to the US. The first study examines rates of PTSD in a sample of unaccompanied children receiving post release services. This study also includes a confirmatory factor analysis to examine the theoretical structure of the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS). The second study examines factors associated with adversity experienced by unaccompanied children who are exiting a long term foster care program. The third study examines factors associated with employment outcomes for unaccompanied children exiting the Unaccompanied Refugee Minor (URM) federal foster care program. Together, the three studies comprise an exploratory dissertation that sheds light on the characteristics of two primary features of immigrant integration, namely mental health and employment. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2019. / Submitted to: Boston College. Haiku SeasonsSmith, Steven Lyle 12 1900 (has links)
Haiku Seasons is a choral work that uses several haiku to portray moments in nature. Spread throughout the performance space, four choirs (SATB, 3/part) depict larger parts of the pastoral scene (i.e., mountains, the moon, etc.). Soloists depart from the choirs in order to perform solo, duo, trio, and quartet passages, which take place throughout the work. If enough singers are available, individual soloists may be used. The soloist groups display the more intimate moments of the scenes (i.e., sparrows, a blade of grass, etc.). The intent of Haiku Seasons is to create an image of nature isolated from human interaction. Thus, the image is a pastoral setting with many independent parts all coexisting in a relatively silent world. I combine aspects of tonality, time, space, and silence to create this image.

Negotiating Agency: Age assessment experiences of former unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in GermanyJessen, Astrid Daiana January 2020 (has links)
The thesis explores on the negotiation of agency in experiences of age assessment of former unaccompanied refugee minors who seek asylum in Germany, as well as in their interaction with the situational context. As a combination of narrative and thematic analysis, the study is based on six online semi-structured interviews with young people and two with professionals working in Youth Welfare Offices. By employing the perspective of Emirbayer & Mische (1998), agency takes here the form of a temporal process. As a result of the juxtaposition between aspects embedded in the past: such as the fact of not having identity documents; their knowledge of age; images of childhood; experiences lived in the trajectory to Germany, and the interplay with the time, flexibility, and credibility in the practical implementation, the negotiation of agency at the time of the age assessment ranges between normalization and confusion. The findings contribute to the debate about age assessment in Germany unifying migration and childhood research. Furthermore, it advances with an empirical approach of agency in the sociology of youth.

This study analyses social age as a phenomenon and if unaccompanied refugee children has a social age that, according to the Swedish culture, do not correspond with their biological age and if so is, the reason for that. Furthermore, our study has discussed the potential consequences of the effects for the unaccompanied refugee children and the social age when interacting with Swedish society. According to our study, the social age is effected by other factors besides cultural norms, values and role expectations that a society has on a specific biological age. The results in this study shows that social age is a vital component to someone’s identity. Therefore, the social age is an important factor for individuals when it comes to meeting and handling new social environments such as new countries.

Ensamkommande : En kvalitativ studie om ensamkommande barns/ungdomars etablering i samhälletHenell, Julia January 2013 (has links)
The numbers of unaccompanied children / young people who comes to Sweden to seek asylum has markedly increased. Migration Board forecasts point not either on that the growth will halt. When the unaccompanied children comes to Sweden they often have separate traumatic events in their luggage but previous studies from children in conflict countries shows that there are conditions in the destination country that will affect them in the long run. Therefore, a good establishment in the society of great significance for the unaccompanied children / young people's future. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that may be contributing to a positive presence in the community. The study is based on two focus where one is on the staff at shelters for unaccompanied children / young people working with children / young people's presence in the community. The second is directed against the unaccompanied children / young people's own experiences of meeting with Swedish society, based on the capabilities and limitations of their establishment. Interviews were conducted with staff working on hvb - lodging for unaccompanied children / young people and the children / young people living on the premises. Currently 13 of 14 municipalities in Norrbotten accept unaccompanied children / adolescents. Of the 13 municipalities which currently conducts accommodations for unaccompanied children / adolescents were Boden, Kiruna, Övertorneå and Arjeplog. Municipalities were selected by its regional spread to thus create a relatively reliable and presentable picture of Norrbotten. Results are based partly on the interviews but also from the relevant literature. In the interviews with young people reveals that they are relatively satisfied and happy with their lives in Sweden. Most of them have an active outdoor life and lots of friends. It was stated, however, that it lacked venues where people could meet and connect with Swedish adolescents as school situation was perceived as very segregated. To get in touch with Swedish adolescents perceived as important both for a faster learning of the language, but also to gain more contacts whatsoever. In the interviews with residential staff, it is clear that they considered the most important work was to try to get young people in society, but they saw some limitations. Even the staff points at the importance of more integrated schools and other venues where Swedish adolescents and young people from other nationalities can meet. /
Validerat; 20130618 (global_studentproject_submitter)

Ensam i Europa? En studie om mottagande- och anpassningsprocessen för ensamkommande barn i Europa, med utgångspunkt i ItalienPetrov, Igor, Andersson, Matilda January 2015 (has links)
In the last decade the Italian authorities have tried to adapt themselves to a united European asylum system, in the European Union, through the adoption of legal reforms, intended to improve the conditions of asylum seekers in Italy. Despite these reforms, asylum seekers and refugee’s living conditions are far from covered. The aim of this study is to explore the different functions of social work in the Italian reception process regarding unaccompanied minors and their implications on the wellbeing of the unaccompanied minors. This study was conducted through several interviews with both social workers, which in some way worked with unaccompanied minors, and the unaccompanied minors themselves. This study shows that social workers emphasize the lack of resources, knowledge and the incompleteness of the asylum laws in Italy. This causes great problems that jeopardize the quality and possibilities of social work. The unaccompanied minors on the other hand emphasized the importance of school and the existence of sports in their life as primary means of integration to the new society. From the social workers accounts it becomes clear that large parts of the Italian migration system needs improvement and that the current laws and regulations are not applied all over Italy due to the lack of economic resources and overall knowledge in the matter, all over the country. Even if there is lot to desire, both workers and minors we have interviewed have expressed that there are many aspects that do work.

Im a Goldfish in a Globe , Pyrus Flower in Rain and In the Labyrinth of Stained Glass Mosaic establish my proficiency in orientating musical idiom and in communicating deliberated artistic conception of space and time with music. Palpitation and A Lagoon of Clouds comprise a comprehensive perception of texture and temporality. Lastly, Yearning . Sober Anguish , Susurrus and Canvas convey my dexterity incraftsmanship, complexity, musical form and poeticality. / In brief, my portfolio exemplifies my idiosyncratic insight into music as atemporal art, as a language and as an architecture of soundscape.
