Reframing the Academic Research Library in the U.S.: Perceptions of Change from Library Leaders

During the past five years (2010-2015), U.S. universities experienced a simultaneous downturn in financial support along with rapid changes in technology and increased demand for accountability. Academic libraries, among the most central and visible units in the university system, were often at the forefront of financial cutbacks and increased pressure to demonstrate both unit effectiveness and closer alignment with the overall institutional mission. Little research existed to document academic libraries’ changes during this volatile period in history, or how the role of the academic library as part of the university system evolved during this period. Through interviews with the library leaders at four public, doctoral, comprehensive research universities in Florida, and an examination of a variety of documents, artifacts, news sources, and electronic and other resources, this qualitative multiple case study explored how four academic libraries were reframed, using the analytic lens of Bolman and Deal’s (2008) theory of reframing organizations. The evidence from this study revealed these four libraries demonstrated engagement in strategic changes across all four of the frames of Bolman and Deal’s (2008) theory of reframing organizations to become innovative, agile, pro-active organizations closely involved in the academic enterprise of their parent universities, and with a reimagined sense of place and purpose as the symbolic heart of the campus. A clear understanding of the activities of these four libraries in reframing their organizations may better inform the future evolution of academic libraries in higher education.

Within the university public environment, in addition to the higher bodies, the academic units need new tools that subsidize the various decision-making of their management. This research deals with the study of information management as support for decision making in an academic environment of a federal institution of higher education, FACE / UFG. Its general objective is to develop an effective tool for information management as a way to contribute to the decision making process of academic unit management. Specifically, it is intended to apply the proposed instrument, to recognize and represent the information needs within the teaching, research and extension triad, to analyze the effectiveness of the instrument and to prepare a recommendation plan for FACE / UFG. The research was characterized as exploratory, of an applied nature and case study, through a qualitative-quantitative approach. The orientation of the research was based on the phases of the proposed instrument, based on the adaptation of the information management model of Choo (2006) and the Reference Morphology of Albuquerque (2012). As a result, it was possible to diagnose the academic environment, to recognize their information needs, as well as to represent them in a way that contributes to the development of a database of a Management Information System. In this way the present study reached the proposed objectives, cooperating, consequently, socially and technologically with the public administration. / A informação é um elemento institucional que devidamente estudado pode se transformar em um recurso estratégico para qualquer organização, inclusive à gestão pública. Dentro do ambiente público universitário, além dos órgãos superiores, as unidades acadêmicas necessitam de novas ferramentas que subsidiem as diversas tomadas de decisões de suas gestões. Esta pesquisa aborda o estudo da gestão da informação como apoio ao processo decisório em um ambiente acadêmico de uma instituição federal de ensino superior, a FACE/UFG. Seu objetivo geral é o de desenvolver um instrumento eficaz para gestão da informação como forma de contribuir para o processo decisório da gestão da unidade acadêmica. De forma específica, pretende-se aplicar o instrumento proposto, reconhecer e representar as necessidades de informações dentro da tríade ensino, pesquisa e extensão, analisar a eficácia do instrumento e elaborar um plano de recomendação para a FACE/UFG. A pesquisa se caracterizou como exploratória, de natureza aplicada e estudo de caso, por meio de uma abordagem quali-quantitativa. A orientação da pesquisa se deu pelas fases do instrumento proposto a partir da adaptação do modelo de gestão da informação de Choo (2006) e da Morfologia de Referência de Albuquerque (2012). Como resultado foi possível diagnosticar o ambiente acadêmico, reconhecer suas necessidades de informação, assim como representá-las de forma a contribuir para o desenvolvimento para uma base de dados de um Sistema de Informações Gerenciais. Dessa maneira o presente estudo atingiu os objetivos propostos cooperando, consequentemente, social e tecnologicamente com a administração pública.

In this sense, the idea that the information under state custody are public and therefore should be available to all has broadened the debate on transparency and access to information. In 2011 it was created the Access to Information Act (LAI) Brazilian determining the Brazilian pubic organizations, at all levels, the development of the transparency of public information as an important guideline. The UFRRJ as a federal agency, is subject to the rule of law. IFES has just over 100 years and the obligation to provide information seems to be a challenge for UFRRJ and their managers who need to understand citizen as social control agent of the government. It is understood that structural, technological and institutional factors need to be rethought so that transparency is effective within the University from the LAI. Thus, this research aims to analyze the transparency practices at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRRJ - according to the perspectives of managers this IFES, from the implementation of the Access to Information Act. The theoretical framework of this research covers transparency in public administration, from the aspects of the right to information and access to information law in the Brazilian context, as well as the discussion of social control from the perspective of society on public administration, beyond the university management comprising the administrative process, the role of the inserted managers in organizational models of public administration. The results show challenges related to the bureaucratic structural, technological gap and academic centralization. It is concluded that increasing transparency in university organizations is achieved only partially with the creation of legislation. This because it involves an effort management which involves action on several other aspects such as training manager. It's a start, but it involves other elements inherent in the manager's position and IFES are complex organizations. / A administra??o p?blica vem passando por transforma??es em todo o mundo na medida em que a sociedade tem demandado a??es mais democr?ticas das organiza??es e gestores p?blicos. Neste sentido, a concep??o de que as informa??es sob a guarda do Estado s?o p?blicas e, portanto, devem estar dispon?veis a todos tem ampliado os debates sobre transpar?ncia e acesso ? informa??o. During this time the institution grew in enrollment, faculty, facilities, endowment, and quality of educational opportunity. Limited to selected experiences and accomplishments, this dissertation examines Stevens' personal and administrative characteristics through interviews with him and those who worked with him. Materials were also used from Stevens' Presidential Archives in the Callie Faye Milliken Special Collections of the Herman and Margaret Brown Library at Abilene Christian University.

Job Satisfaction of Faculty at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya

This study was planned to increase understanding of job satisfaction among faculty in middle size universities. The problem was job satisfaction and its association with selected demographic characteristics of faculty at Kenyatta University, second largest university in Nairobi. There was a response rate of 52.6 percent. All of the 300 faculty members with the rank of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, lecturer and teaching fellow participated in this research. Two instruments were used to collect data from the participating faculty. The first instrument was a demographic data sheet that solicited personal data from faculty. The second instrument was a standardized six dimensional survey instrument, the Job Descriptive Index (JDI). Both survey instruments were handed out in an envelope to all faculty by the researcher. The findings showed that most faculty were satisfied with their job in areas of co-workers and job in general. They seemed dissatisfied with the area of opportunities for promotion. The findings further demonstrated that most faculty were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their present work, present pay, and supervision. Analysis of variance demonstrated that the selected demographic variables of age, professional rank, and nationality were associated with job satisfaction. Scheffé's Multiple Comparison test and Newman-Keuls procedure were used to analyze differences in satisfaction among groups. The results showed that professors and lecturers were significantly more satisfied with their coworkers than were the assistant professors. Faculty members' gender, marital status, years of experience, tenure status, academic degree and area of interest did not influence job satisfaction. It is recommended that future research to determine an appropriate system of promotions structure and faculty growth and development be initiated.

The evolving American research university and non-faculty professional work

This exploratory study was a response to claims that non-faculty professionals at universities were the cause of administrative bloat. The purpose of the study was to build from the work of Rhoades (1998) and Kane (2007) to determine whether non-faculty professional employees at the University of Texas at Austin(UT Austin) performed core university work of research, teaching and/or public service. In the spring of 2012 a survey was sent out to 1036 UT Austin non-faculty professional employees. The survey results determined that a sizable number of non-faculty professional employees at UT Austin were performing or directly contributing to research, teaching and/or public service. In addition to the three areas of core work, it was determined that non-faculty professional employees at UT Austin had advanced degrees, published in peer-reviewed journals, had specialized skills and bodies of knowledge, applied for grants and engaged in entrepreneurial activities. / text

Transformational and transactional leadership development through participation in collegiate student organizations at Ball State University

The purpose of this study was to examine the Ball State University collegiate student organizational structure and determine how leader and manager roles develop, :based on responses that student organizational officers and members provide on the Leadership Questionnaire (Burke, 1988) at two different times during the 1999-2000 academic year. This study also investigated the development process of student officer positions to determine whether transactional (management) or transformational (leadership) is promoted. Using thethe pre- and post-test data, the results showed that those subjects who were members decreased in leadership skill development, while officers increased in leadership skill development during a two month time span. The difference between the two groups was significant at the .064 level. (F (1,23) = 3.79, p = .064) The alpha level was chosen as .10 due to the exploratory nature of the study and the small data history. This data confirms our initial research hypotheses that 1) participation in authority roles develops leadership skills, and 2) those authority roles are experienced as leadership roles. / Fisher Institute for Wellness and Gerontology
