The new South Africa is encouraging multilingualism. The Department of Education has given a mandate to promote African languages. The Department of Higher Education came up with higher education language policy in 2002. All the higher education institutions have to choose indigenous languages to promote. Tshwane University of Technology has decided to promote Setswana and siSwati as their primary and secondary languages, respectively, to be used within the university.
This study is about assessing the implementation of the Tshwane University of Technology’s language Policy. The researcher uses mixed methods to conduct the research. A survey and observation were used as tools to collect data. The researcher observed the implementation of the language policy at Tshwane University of Technology (Soshanguve Campus). The researcher also reviewed the language policies for Higher education and the Tshwane University of Technology’s language policy. The signage, marketing tools, billboards, directions and university documents were observed. This research was based on promoting the indigenous languages. From the data collected, Setswana is not used to convey the message within the university; therefore the indigenous languages are not yet implemented or promoted / African Languages / M. A. higher education institution, using a case study design.
To determine the need for consumer learning at the Cape Peninsula University of
Technology - the "bounded context" of the study - a situation analysis was
conducted as the first phase of curriculum development. Methods to triangulate data
included the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods, together with a
thorough literature study. The two sets of empirical data were obtained from two
research instruments, namely self-administered survey questionnaires and semistructured
interviews with learning facilitators (lecturers) at the institution.
The survey amongst first-year students was used to assist in the needs assessment
for curriculum development at the CPUT and to determine the knowledge, skills,
values and attitudes of first-year respondents regarding consumer rights and
responsibilities, as well as other consumer-related issues. This not only provided
data to analyse the situation, but also assisted in the planning and development of a
curriculum framework for consumer learning.
The researcher used semi-structured interviews to determine the views and
perceptions of learning facilitators regarding the importance of consumer learning, and to gauge the need for such learning at the institution. Aspects relating to the
contents, teaching strategies, level of introduction, potential for critical crossfield outcomes development, benefits and major obstacles in the implementation and/or
integration into the curriculum were also investigated. The two-tiered situation analysis indicated that students expressed a clear need for
consumer learning at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, especially
regarding the areas of consumer rights and responsibilities. The importance of
consumer learning and the "readiness climate" from the perspective of the learning
facilitators was also clearly established.
The study culminated in the development of a curriculum framework for consumer
learning that is compatible with the requirements of the South African Qualifications Authority and the Higher Education Qualifications Framework in South Africa.
Key findings reported in the form of a curriculum framework could serve as a
guideline for the planning and implementation of a consumer learning programme at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is onderneem met die doel om 'n kurrikulumraamwerk vir
verbruikersleer aan 'n hoëronderwysinstelling te ontwikkel. 'n Gevallestudiebenadering
is gebruik om die sosiale verskynsel van verbruikersleer te ondersoek.
Om die behoefte aan verbruikersleer aan die Kaapse Skiereilandse Universiteit van
Tegnologie - die konteks van die studie - te bepaal, is 'n situasie-analise onderneem
as die eerste fase van kurrikulumontwikkeling. Metodes van triangulasie in hierdie
navorsing sluit die benutting van kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe gegewens in, asook
'n literatuurstudie. Die twee stelle empiriese gegewens is verkry vanuit 'n selfgeadministreerde
opnamevraelys aan studente en onderhoude met leerfasiliteerders
(dosente) aan die instelling.
Die doel van die opnamevraelys was om te help met die behoeftebepaling vir
kurrikulumontwikkeling aan die Kaapse Skiereilandse Universiteit van Tegnologie, en
veral om die kennis, vaardighede, waardes en houdings van eerstejaarrespondente
met betrekking tot verbruikersregte en -verantwoordelikhede te bepaal. Dit het nie
alleen insig in die situasie-ontleding gegee nie, maar het ook gehelp met die
beplanning en ontwikkeling van 'n kurrikulumraamwerk vir verbruikersleer.
Die doel met die gebruik van semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude in hierdie studie was
om die navorser in staat te stel om die sienswyse en persepsies van
leerfasiliteerders met betrekking tot die belangrikheid van verbruikersleer, asook die
behoefte daarvoor by die instelling te bepaal. Aspekte wat verband hou met die
inhoud, onderrigstrategieë, vlak van bekendstelling, potensiaal vir kritieke
uitkomsontwikkeling, voordele en vernaamste struikelblokke in die implementering
en/of integrasie van die kurrikulum is ook getoets.
Die situasie-analise dui daarop dat studente aan die Kaapse Skiereilandse
Universiteit van Tegnologie 'n behoefte het aan verbruikersleer, veral met betrekking
tot die bevordering van verbruikersregte en -verantwoordelikhede. Die belangrikheid
van verbruikersleer en die "gereedheidsklimaat" daarvoor vanuit die perspektief van
die leerfasiliteerders is ook bevestig.
Die resultaat van die navorsing het gelei tot die ontwikkeling van 'n
kurrikulumraamwerk vir verbruikersleer wat versoenbaar is met die vereistes van die
Suid-Afrikaanse Kwalifikasie-Owerheid en die van die Hoëronderwys Kwalifikasieraamwerk
in Suid-Afrika.
Sleutelbevindings in verband met verbruikersleer is ook in die raamwerk opgeneem.
Hierdie bevindings kan as 'n riglyn dien vir die beplanning en implementering van 'n
verbruikersleerprogram aan die Kaapse Skiereilandse Universiteit van Tegnologie.

A consumer profile of first year marketing students at the Pretoria campus of the Tshwane University of TechnologyHoltzhausen, Tania 31 March 2006 (has links)
This study provides a consumer profile of first year Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Marketing students. To determine influences on students' tertiary education choices, a literature study was undertaken on consumer behaviour, influencing factors and consumer decision-making. An empirical study established consumer behaviour variables impacting on tertiary students, and revealed students' future perspective. A structured questionnaire was distributed. The main findings are: preferred media are E-TV, Metro FM, Drum magazine and The Sunday Times; Internet access is low; most prefer TUT for tertiary education; parents and academic standards predominantly impact tertiary institution choice; the majority will continue their studies and apply for a marketing job in South Africa; their future perspective is predominantly optimistic. In conclusion, the students are impacted by reference groups and institutional marketing efforts. Primary concerns include: successful communication with this group; the effectiveness of the Open Day; and the lack of using reference groups in marketing. / Business Management / M. Com. Students' perceptions of the role of the library in their studies at Tshwane University of Technology, Polokwane CampusMalatji, Kwetepe Julious 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ perceptions of the role of the library in their studies. A positivist research paradigm was employed and quantitative and qualitative research approaches were followed. The research design was a case study. Three sampling methods were used in the study. To obtain a sample of the students, stratified random sampling and systematic sampling were applied. In the case of the library staff, purposive sampling was used. Data was collected from students and a limited number of library staff using questionnaires and interview schedules respectively. The latter was for the purpose of validating and collecting complete data from students.The findings of the study revealed that students at TUT, PC have positive perceptions of the library and are satisfied with library services. The findings of the study further revealed that students find the library to be user-friendly and they use the library to borrow materials, read their own notes and books, access the internet and study.
Factors, such as opening and closing hours, a conducive environment for studying, and knowledge of the library staff helps the library to contribute to students’ achievement outcomes. Moreover, the findings reveal that lack of resources, non-attendance of information literacy programmes by students, a lack of research support, and an inadequate infrastructure hinder the library’s contribution to students’ achievement outcomes. The research recommends that there should be a credit-bearing and compulsory information literacy programme offered as part of the curriculum at all levels of study at TUT, PC. Furthermore, library staff need to engage and interact well with students in order to better meet the needs of individual students. Auch in den Jahren 1998, 2001, 2005 und 2009 konnte jeweils eine Absolventenbefragung an der Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften realisiert werden. Inhalt dieser Ergebnisbroschüre bildet die nunmehr sechste Erhebungswelle 2013, wobei eine Gegenüberstellung der Daten zu den früheren Absolventenbefragungen im Sinne eines Längsschnittvergleichs möglich ist.

Perception of some secondary school educators towards inclusive education in MaokengMphunngoa, Molatoli Ezekiel January 2008 (has links)

Ed.) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2008 / The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of secondary school educators towards inclusive education in Maokeng.”Inclusive education defined as schools, centres of learning and educational systems that ensure that all children learn and participate” (Van Rooyen & De Beer, 2006). Two secondary schools were chosen for this study, with eight respondents who are mainstream educators. There were four male educators and four female educators in the sample.
The qualitative methodology, in particular Textual Orientation Discourse Analysis (TODA), was used as the tool to obtain information from the respondents. The respondents, as educators at secondary schools, were selected according to their level of education, experience at work, their age and the way that they perceive inclusive education in secondary schools.
The main finding shows that there are educators who favour inclusive education and there are those who are not in favour of inclusive education. Some contributing factors for not being in favour were reported as, lack of information regarding inclusive education, the time factor, lack of resources, inadequate knowledge and skills of educators, need for training, lack of teacher support, efficiency of the support teacher, disruptive and unchallenged learners and their impact on schools.
Given the above findings and conclusion, the study recommends that educators should be sufficiently supported by well informed para-professionals, in order to make inclusive education a success. Resources should be well distributed to various institutions where inclusive education is going to be instituted. Government experts should work in collaboration with experts from the university with regard to the attainment of skills, in order to improve the work of educators at schools, particularly those who work with disabled learners. At school level, specialized educators and those who are able to identify learners with problems should be hired. The number of educators needs to increase, in order to reduce large numbers of learners in each class, which will enable educators to reach each learner.

Thesis (D.Phil.) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2010 / Due to various reasons, today’s learners lead a passive life that results in movement deprivation and poor motor development. Motor development contributes to cognitive development, which can also contribute to school readiness. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, researchers have indicated that there is an increase of learners with motor problems, which can develop into learning problems.
The primary aim of the study was to determine the influence of a 10 week Judo intervention programme on Grade 1 learners with motor restraints. The formal standardised test, Bruininks-Oseretsky Test for Motor Proficiency (BOTMP) with its eight subscales, was used for this purpose. A total of 140 learners took part in the programme: 70 learners formed part of the control group and 70 learners formed part of the experimental group. All the learners took part in the pre- and post-tests (the BOTMP). The experimental group took part in the Judo intervention programme. The importance of Judo with regard to motor aspects has been highlighted. It promotes self-confidence and self-control, and has a significant influence on learning behaviour and learning of movement. This sport emphasises body awareness and spatial orientation, and develops sensory-motor activities, as well as cognitive and physical movements. Furthermore, Judo consists of a great number of motor movements and, as a result of this diversity, the participant develops on a motor, cognitive, social and emotional level.
To determine whether the Judo intervention programme had any impact on the learners, t-tests were applied. These tests were done on independent and nonindependent groups. The data was statistically processed and depicted in table or graph format. The results indicated a significant improvement in five of the eight subscales of the BOTMP. The motor variates that showed improvement were balance, bilateral coordination, reaction speed, visual motor control, and upper limb speed and dexterity. The means were statistically different on the 5% level. Furthermore, the average of two variates differed on a 1% level, namely balance and bilateral coordination. Running speed and agility, as well as strength, did not show significant signs of improvement.
From the results, it can be concluded that an affordable and achievable Judo intervention programme has a significant impact on the gross, gross-fine and fine motor development of Grade 1 learners with motor restraints. The study indicated that Judo as a sport indeed has an effect on the motor skills of these learners. It is recommended that such a programme should be marketed to educators and be included in the Life Orientation Programme.

As tourism increases so the consumer’s demand for quality in all its related products and services increase. Superior customer service can therefore be viewed as one of the most effective strategies to create a sustainable competitive advantage. The delivery of excellent service is crucial if a tourism destination such as the Sol Plaatje Municipal Area in the Northern Cape, South Africa, is to enhance its visitors’ experience and ensure their extended stay. One of the key constraints to tourism growth that has been identified is the lack of product and service quality.
The primary goal of the study therefore was to investigate the perceptions of tourists on the quality of tourism service in the Sol Plaatje Area. Another primary goal was to determine the quality of service by conducting unstructured interviews with role-players in the local tourism industry. Secondary objectives were set, namely to determine the service needs of foreign and domestic tourists, and to make recommendations and suggestions to increase service quality in the Sol Plaatje Area.
A questionnaire was used as a measuring instrument and distributed to domestic and foreign tourists. Three sampling points were selected to conduct the survey (250 questionnaires), namely the departure hall of Kimberley Airport, the Big Hole and the McGregor Museum. Results indicated that although the majority of tourists (83.4% of domestic and 93.8% of foreign respondents) were generally satisfied with the service they received and would promote the Sol Plaatje Municipal Area as a tourist destination, a large number of respondents (32.1%) rated their satisfaction with service delivery as average to poor. This is an indication that improvement is needed in the delivery of quality service.
Unstructured interviews (conducted by the researcher) with 20 major role-players in the local tourism industry indicated that the majority (60%) perceived the service delivery in the Sol Plaatje Municipal Area as average to poor and not exceeding the expectations of tourists. Overall, the results indicated the need for the Sol Plaatje Municipal Area to improve its tourism service delivery in order to exceed tourist expectations and compete with other destinations locally and abroad.
The findings of this study contribute valuable information and insights into the quality of service delivery in the Sol Plaatje Municipal Area. It will therefore be beneficial to all tourism stakeholders to provide visitors with the best service experience in the Sol Plaatje Municipal Area.

Political reality of local government service provision in the Free State ProvinceBoshoff, Willem Hendrik January 2011 (has links)

Tech.(Public Management)) -- Central University of Technology, free State, 2011 / The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, No. 108 of 1996 (SA, 1996) brought about a new system of government comprised of the national, provincial and local government spheres. In terms of the Constitution, these spheres of government must establish effective, transparent and accountable government. Local government is specifically responsible for the provision of democratic and accountable government to local communities, and for ensuring that municipal services are rendered to the community.
As in the case of the national and provincial spheres of government, local government has a distinctive political nature and character. Councillors are elected to represent the voters who participate in municipal elections, as well as the relevant political parties, on municipal councils. The decisions of municipal councils are influenced by political considerations, as well as by the policy directives of the ruling party.
The Constitution also establishes and describes the various governmental bodies that exercise the powers of the state. These governmental bodies represent the state and can be classified in terms of three primary groups, namely legislative, executive and legal structures. In a bona fide democracy, the doctrine of separation of powers, also known as the trias politica, is of fundamental importance in order to prevent autocracy and ensure civil liberty.
The provision of viable municipal services is the most crucial reason for the existence of local government. The community has a legitimate expectation with regard to the provision of appropriate municipal services; and in terms of the Municipal Systems Act, No. 32 of 2000 (SA, 2000c) municipalities must supply basic municipal services in order to ensure an acceptable quality of life. However, inadequate levels of municipal service provision are encountered in South Africa in general, and in the Free State in particular. Such inadequate service provision has led to several violent community-protest actions in the country. These protests are an indication that municipal service provision does not meet the expectations of the communities.
Various factors tend to have a negative effect on local government in the Free State, including capacity shortages, such as the lack of professional and experienced staff; financial shortages; and the extensive quantity and complexity of local government legislation. Political challenges that influence local government service provision include factors such as the absence of the political will to provide services, political in-fighting within the ruling party, the selection criteria for the appointment of municipal employees, and political interference in municipal administration. It is also essential that the ruling party should put acceptable mechanisms in place to ensure that the public sector becomes an effective instrument for carrying out the ruling party‟s mandate, rather than allowing political interference to affect the day-to-day activities of government.
In order to meet the needs of the community with regard to service provision, it is essential that the three spheres of government should function as a coherent unit. Intergovernmental relations therefore play a central role in ensuring that the joint functions of government are effectively carried out. The national and provincial departments have a specific responsibility to support and strengthen local government capacity, and also to ensure the effective execution of municipal functions. However, various intergovernmental challenges need to be dealt with, namely ineffective co-ordination and integration, as well as the absence of the political will to promote intergovernmental relations.
Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify specific actions and strategies that can be implemented by the government in order to address the challenges that have a negative influence on local government service provision, with specific reference to the political challenges.
