The Current State of Us Higher Education Social Media Policies with Regard to Teaching and Learning: a Document Review Needs Assessment

Reed, Adalheidur Steinunn 12 1900 (has links)
In the world we live in today, having a social media account such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or Google+ has become deeply ingrained in our society. The old way of networking with who you knew or who knew your family is no longer in play for many people. In the times in which we live, much personal and professional networking is completed via social media. The old way of networking had unwritten rules of engagement which, basically, were to be respectful and not cause any embarrassment within the network. Rules for best practice engagement are still evolving for this new way of using social media for personal and professional networking, which is the premise for the current study which addresses: the gap in U.S. university social media policies, with regard to teaching and learning. In order to gauge the policy interlude, a sample of over 49 U.S. university social media policies were gathered for a comprehensive document analysis. The Google search engine was used to find the policies, next the qualitative software NVivo10 was used to procure and analyze the policies. Additionally, triangulation was performed by three member checking volunteer investigators. The results of the study, disclosed that current policies are intended to train faculty and staff, in the legal and proper manner, in which the universities expect their employees to positively represent the sampled universities.

Public Pumping: The Nursing Mom's Support Program at Virginia Tech

Porter, Jennifer Lynn 09 July 2013 (has links)
The Lactation Support Program at Virginia Tech, renamed the Nursing Mom's Support Program, was established  in 1999 when a group of women through the Women's Center and Work/Life Resources publicized a private concern about expressing milk.  While the basic goal was to create a universal opportunity for women seeking to express milk during the workday, university administrators also saw the program as a way to advance the progressive goals of the university and increase the recruitment of competitive faculty and students.  Lack of awareness about the program and struggles of women today reflect the original abandonment of an education component that would have maintained a collective conversation about the needs of working women, mothers, and caregivers in general.   Even though many of the women in this study did not use the spaces, or were unaware of their existence, most participants felt that the program represented a significant success for the university and stated that they felt supported because of the mere existence of these spaces. Viewed in this manner, it is possible to see how the production of space and its symbolic value masks over any residual injustices and replaces concerns about milk expression on the individual.  Yet, the permeable nature of lactation (scheduling, cleaning pump parts, storing milk, etc.) means that the women expressing milk will always be visible.  This visibility creates an opportunity to continue to address milk expression as a public concern and shift social expectations of what it means to be a worker. / Master of Science

IMPLEMENTATION EFFECTIVENESS OF CAMPUS TOBACCO-FREE POLICIES

Fallin, Amanda 01 January 2011 (has links)
Tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure are leading causes of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. Outdoor tobacco smoke exposure conveys many of the same risks as indoor secondhand smoke exposure. Tobacco-free campuses policies are an intervention to promote a positive social norm that encourages smoking cessation, as well as reduces exposure to outdoor tobacco smoke. This dissertation contains a review of the policy implementation literature; findings from a psychometric analysis of the newly developed Tobacco-free Compliance Assessment Tool (TF-CAT) to assess compliance with tobacco-free campus policies; and results of a campus intervention study to promote compliance. The TF-CAT protocol is designed to count cigarette butts, observe smokers, and use GIS mapping to display hot spots. A total of 413 observations in primary and secondary campus locations yielded compliance data on both the academic healthcare and main campuses. Results show support for the concurrent validity of the TF-CAT. Inter-rater reliability of the measure is strong, and the tool is feasible, though time- and resource-intensive. The intervention study tested the effects of an efficacy-based messaging campaign on the number of cigarette butts observed on campus. After distributing 6,000 message cards in high-traffic areas over three days, there were fewer cigarette butts per day per site post-intervention compared to pre-intervention (n = 312 observations; median = 4.7 vs. 1.9; U=2239, p=.004). It is crucial for tobacco control advocates to ensure implementation effectiveness of tobacco-free policies. Future research needs to refine methods to measure policy implementation effectiveness. In addition, interventions need to be developed and tested to promote policy implementation effectiveness.

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Educa??o, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017. / The present work constitutes a case study and has as object of study the regulation of the institutional policy of intellectual property and technological innovation of the Federal University of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys (UFVJM). With the advent of the regulatory framework for science, technology and innovation (Law n? 13.243 / 2016), which amended the current innovation law (Law 10.973 / 2004), the so-called Scientific, Technological and Innovation Institutions (ICTs) in the case of the UFVJM, were challenged in order to establish their innovation policy, according to legally established goals and guidelines. In this perspective, this study has as general objective to propose considerations that can contribute to the debate with the university community aiming at perfecting the regulatory framework of the intellectual property policies and technological innovation of the UFVJM. In order to achieve this purpose, it was established as specific objectives to verify the compliance of the regulation of intellectual property policies and technological innovation of UFVJM with Law 10,973 / 2004 and discuss its relationship with the main issues addressed in the metajuridic scope of this work; and to evaluate the compatibility between the regulation of intellectual property policies and technological innovation of UFVJM with the needs of that university, based on the Institutional Development Plan - PDI of the institution. In this sense, methodologically, this research is descriptive, with a bibliographic and documentary bias, carried out in books, magazines, articles and internet pages. The bibliographical research, which bases this study, was developed with the contribution of several authors, mainly in the theoretical framework called Juridical and Metajuridic Scopes. On the other hand, documentary research was carried out with the foundation of the Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil of 1988, Law 9,279 / 1996, Law 9,394 / 1996, Law 10,973 / 2004, Law 17,348, of January 17, 2008 (Mining Law for Innovation), Determination of the Foundation for Support of Research of the State of Minas Gerais (Fapemig) n? 72, of August 13, 2013, Law n? 13.243 / 2016 and resolutions of the UFVJM. It was concluded by the need for the UFVJM to regulate its policy of intellectual property and technological innovation, in an integral form in a single document. It was also pointed out that the construction and regulation of such policies take into account the main needs of the UFVJM set forth in its Institutional Development Plan (IDP). Finally, it is recommended that the regulation of such policies seek to foster and consolidate the socioeconomic development of the UFVJM's region. Thus, it is expected that this work can contribute to the scientific, technological and intellectual development of this federal institution of higher education.

Study Abroad and Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive Universities: Preparing Students from Underrepresented Racial Groups to Live in a Global Environment

Williams, Felecia D. 01 January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify current practices in study abroad offices and to investigate factors that may impact the number of minority students that participate in study abroad programs. The predictors, commitment to study abroad, proportion of staff and student workers, and awareness were selected for this current exploratory study are a result of the literature review. The other selected variables: endowment, financial aid and SAT/ACT scores are predictors typically used in higher education. This exploratory research focused on the policies, procedures, and strategies implemented allowing us to comprehensively describe the activities and efforts study abroad personnel employ in American higher education. We used as our population the Carnegie 101 public doctoral/research extensive universities that serve undergraduates. The researcher implemented the Study Abroad Office Survey to collect the data. The researcher conducted multiple regression analyses to examine whether the proportion of all students studying abroad is influenced by endowment, percent of a university's students receiving financial aid, university's commitment to internationalization and study abroad, the SAT/ACT scores, and the proportion of staff. The results of the regression reveals that the proportion of staff was highly significant Analysis of the standardized regression coefficient and associated p value reveals (β=.5 18, t=5.233, p The researcher conducted independent samples t tests to address the awareness factor. Results indicate that there is a significant difference in the proportion of the undergraduate student population studying abroad when presentations by study abroad office faculty/staff at student club meetings are implemented as a recruitment activity (t = is 2.595, 70 df, p = .012).Employing systems theory, the researcher recommends that higher education administrators should consider embedding internationalization in the curriculum by finding ways of making an international experience a more routine part of attending a twenty-first century university. The researcher further recommends continued lobbying efforts regarding the fate of the Abraham Lincoln Fellowship legislation.

A Study of University Student Travel Behavior

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Institutions of higher education, particularly those with large student enrollments, constitute special generators that contribute in a variety of ways to the travel demand in a region. Despite the importance of university population travel characteristics in understanding and modeling activity-travel patterns and mode choice behavior in a region, such populations remain under-studied. As metropolitan planning organizations continue to improve their regional travel models by incorporating processes and parameters specific to major regional special generators, university population travel characteristics need to be measured and special submodels that capture their behavior need to be developed. The research presented herein begins by documenting the design and administration of a comprehensive university student online travel and mode use survey that was administered at Arizona State University (ASU) in the Greater Phoenix region of Arizona. The dissertation research offers a detailed statistical analysis of student travel behavior for different student market segments. A framework is then presented for incorporating university student travel into a regional travel demand model. The application of the framework to the ASU student population is documented in detail. A comprehensive university student submodel was estimated and calibrated for integration with the full regional travel model system. Finally, student attitudes toward travel are analyzed and used as explanatory factors in multinomial logit models of mode choice. This analysis presents an examination of the extent to which attitudes play a role in explaining mode choice behavior of university students in an urban setting. The research provides evidence that student travel patterns vary substantially from those of the rest of the population, and should therefore be considered separately when forecasting travel demand and formulating transport policy in areas where universities are major contributors to regional travel. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil Engineering 2014

« Université-monde » : l'internationalisation des politiques universitaires en France et en Russie / « World - university» : the internationalization of university policies in France and in Russia

Filimonova, Ekaterina 06 November 2015 (has links)
The thesis is devoted to a topical issue of universities reorganization in condition of internationalcompetition of university systems characteristics. In our research we consider the internationalizationas a catalyst, on one hand, and as an analyzer of changes in university systems, on the other hand. Forthe purpose of studying these changes, we appeal to B. Jobert’s and P. Muller’s concept ofréféréntiél. The basis of our hypothesis is the fact that since the middle of 2000s we could witness аcreation of a new référéntiel of a « competitive university » that could set a new standard of a“world-class university” in the nearest future. Even though this référentiel is common for manycountries, it presents some particularities when applied to different levels of university systems. Thus, in the first part of the thesis we would like to present the main principals of a new socialrepresentation system in terms of higher education and research. In the second part of this work, wehave recourse to a field study in order to explore if the référentiel changes in reality.
