January 2011 (has links)
O resultado final é um esforço teórico na tentativa de entender as relações de poder e de hegemonia que se estabelecem no processo de produção do espaço, das quais a política habitacional é apenas uma delas / Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the role of state agents responsible for execute the housing policy in the urban development in São Paulo State, focusing on the comparative study of four cities: Araçatuba, Marília, Presidente Prudente and São José do Rio Preto. Trough the evaluation of the performance of Banco Nacional de Habitação (BNH), the Caixa Economica Federal (CEF) and the Companhia de Desenvolvimento Habitacional e Urbano do estado de São Paulo (CDHU), focusing mainly on the production of housing, we seek to understand their roles and interests embodied behind their actions. To identify these concerns, we conducted extensive analysis on the historical context in which these policies and their agents were forged, which led us to the debate on key dynamics of our sociospatial formation, through the theory of the basic duality of the Brazilian economy, the Ignacio Rangel. The end result is a theoretical effort in trying to understand power and hegemony relationships that are established in the production of space, of which housing policy is only one of them / Mestre

Downtown Phoenix Rising: A Case Study of Two Organizations Building Social Capital for Urban Core RevitalizationJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation examines the way in which social capital, or productive networks, can be used to support downtown renewal. This case study examines the way in which Phoenix Community Alliance (PCA) and Downtown Phoenix Partnership (DPP)--two, critical downtown-focused organizations ostensibly founded for civic improvement--use social capital to advance downtown urban development initiatives. This case study also explores how and the extent to which new social capital is generated by PCA and DPP through the processes of planning, designing, and implementing downtown development projects and the kinds of initiatives this social capital enables, whether and how the focus of downtown Phoenix development has shifted over time, the challenges facing contemporary downtown development and role PCA and DPP might play in addressing these issues, and recommended strategies for advancing future downtown development through social capital that evolves as downtown needs change. This dissertation contributes to the general understanding of how pivotal groups responsible for impacting downtown development and quality of life can become more effective in their roles by examining how they create networks pivotal to advancing urban downtown renewal. Research findings illuminate how community development groups can more effectively use networks to inspire downtown improvement. Findings emphasize the need to engage a broader downtown community, including both emerging and established organizations and those who desire to contribute to a diverse and exciting heart or city core. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Public Administration 2011

Modeling Habitat Availability of Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks in Central MarylandJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: Once considered an abundant species in the eastern United States, local populations of red-shouldered hawks, Buteo lineatus, have declined due to habitat destruction. This destruction has created suitable habitat for red-tailed hawks, Buteo jamaicensis, and therefore increased competition between these two raptor species. Since suitable habitat is the main limiting factor for raptors, a computer model was created to simulate the effect of habitat loss in central Maryland and the impact of increased competition between the more aggressive red-tailed hawk. These simulations showed urban growth contributed to over a 30% increase in red-tailed hawk habitat as red-shouldered hawk habitat decreased 62.5-70.1% without competition and 71.8-76.3% with competition. However there was no significant difference seen between the rate of available habitat decline for current and predicted development growth. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Urban development in the Lordships of Glamorgan, Gwynllŵg, Caerleon and Usk under the Clare family, 1217-1314Penrose, Robert Leigh January 1997 (has links)
This thesis has set out with the intention of providing a detailed investigation of the pattern of urban development which occurred in the lordships of Glamorgan, Gwynllŵg, Caerleon and Usk between 1217 and 1314, The reason for concentrating upon the period 1217-1314 is that it was during this time that each of the four lordships passed into the hands of a single baronial family, the Clare earls of Gloucester and Hertford. A central theme of the thesis has been to obtain an understanding of the way in which urban development as a whole evolved during this period, with particular emphasis being placed upon the role played by the Clare seigneurs in shaping these developments. This question of seigneurial involvement is important, and sets the study apart from previous investigations into urbanisation in the four lordships. Whilst the individual development of towns within the lordships has generally received a fair amount of historical and archaeological investigation, very little attempt has been made to examine how the towns might have been interactive and interdependent in terms of administration and economic development when under the control of a common lord. In the course of this thesis consideration has been made of the development and evolution of the towns of Cardiff, Newport, Kenfig, Neath, Caerleon, Usk, Cowbridge, Trelech, Llantrisant and Caerphilly, and important aspects regarding the respective influence of the seigneur and the burgesses have been identified. In all the towns held by the Clares, it emerges that it was the seigneur who represented the dominant force in shaping urban development. Moreover, strong evidence has emerged to suggest that the Clares adopted and implemented a homogeneous attitude towards the development of urban centres in their Marcher lordships.

The Baltic Pearl in the window to Europe: St. Petersburg's Chinese quarterDixon, Megan Lori, 1969- 12 1900 (has links)
xvi, 330 p. : ill. (some col.) A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation focuses on an urban development project outside St. Petersburg, Russia, called the Baltic Pearl. Financed by a consortium of firms based in Shanghai, China, the Baltic Pearl signals several changes in contemporary Russia. At the scale of the region and the nation-state, the project reflects growing political cooperation between the Russian and Chinese governments; it also parallels an increase in economic partnership, including use of Chinese labor. However, social processes at the scale of the city may militate against the success of this project. City residents fearful of rumored Chinese migration feel alarm over the Baltic Pearl because they associate it with narratives of Chinatowns inhabited by labor migrants; other residents already resentful of being left behind in the economic transformation associate the project with the city administration's neglect of their needs. Thus, closer examination of the Baltic Pearl offers the opportunity to gauge commonalities in the causes behind xenophobia and claims of dispossession.
Using a theoretical approach based on both humanist and critical geography, I develop an original reading of Henri Lefebvre's The Production of Space to which I give the term socio-spatial paradigm. This concept allows me to conduct an analysis of spatialities in statements of the vision and purpose of the Baltic Pearl made by various individuals and groups. I consider the negotiation over the project's form between Chinese and Russian officials, planners, and architects; local protest and support for the quarter as articulated in newspaper articles, blogs, a survey, and interviews; and individual narratives of spatial form in the city as recounted in a survey and interviews. The aim of the different analyses is to evaluate the capacity of St. Petersburg to adapt to global pressures related to economic restructuring and migration streams, and to become a truly "world city" in terms of cultural multiplicity as well as financial capacity.
The conclusion discusses the commensurability of information gained at different scales, from interview narratives to government statements. The study asserts the need to develop better models for incorporating information gained at finer scales into our evaluation of state-to-state relations. / Advisers: Dr. Alexander B. Fatores que condicionam a formação de ambientes urbanos inovadores em cidades sustentáveis / Conditioning factors for innovative urban environments in sustainable citiesBichueti, Roberto Schoproni 08 March 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Cities are at the heart of the debate on sustainable development. The urbanization over recent
decades has brought with it many challenges around the urban sustainability. The cleaner energy
generation, proper disposal of solid waste, urban mobility and the availability of green areas are some
of goals in different agendas of sustainable cities. In this context, the adoption of management
practices for sustainable urban development is able to produce urban conditions that may be
mentioned: raising the quality of life and well-being of the population, reduction of environmental
impacts and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle in the cities. This distinctive urban environment is able
to provide, among other things, attracting qualified people, most social interaction between them and
the attraction of investments. Several authors suggest that these factors, among others, may be
associated with the generation of positive externalities that promote economic development and
increase the ability to produce innovation. A qualified urban environment that values diversity, fosters
creativity and enables the knowledge sharing can be considered suitable for the increased creativity
and innovation. In this sense, the study aims at analyzing the importance of management practices for
sustainable urban development to promote favorable urban conditions to the formation of innovative
urban environments in sustainable cities. For this, a qualitative and exploratory research, through a
case study was carried out. The case of Curitiba city has been studied, in view of its
representativeness in urban sustainability, which enabled the analysis of the phenomenon in a context
that allowed the achievement of the objectives. It was possible to know the city's characteristics and
the key management practices for sustainable urban development conducted in Curitiba. Above all, it
could be noted urban conditions, as a result of these practices, capable of favoring the creation of an
innovative urban environment, among which are: (1) social integration and articulation between the
actors; (2) Attraction of qualified companies; (3) adequate mobility and urban infrastructure; (4)
attracting and retaining talented / skilled human capital; (5) high quality of life; (6) active cultural scene.
Thus, as a sustainable city, Curitiba was demonstrated an urban environment that promotes such
conditions, which create positive externalities that favor the increase in innovative capacity in their
territory. We can see, yet, a closer association of these conditions with the activities related to the
service sector, such as the creative economy. We can see, yet, a closer association of these
conditions with the activities related to the service sector, such as the creative economy. The research
presents evidences to confirm the theoretical presupposition of the study, namely: management
practices for sustainable urban development are able to provide conditions for the formation of
innovative urban environments in sustainable cities. A acelerada
criativa.
