Urbanização em Campinas: mudanças no tecido urbano no entorno da rodovia Dom Pedro I / Urban growth in Campinas: changes in the urban fabric around Dom Pedro I highway.

Mitica Neto, Helio 19 May 2008 (has links)
This thesis deals with the changes in the process of urban growth in the city of Campinas, from the year 1970 onwards, more specifically in the areas surrounding the axis of Highway Dom Pedro I. These changes consist in the formation of a new pattern of urban growth in a regional scale, which is closely related to the emergence of new patterns of urban fabric. We can say that several factors provided the formation of this new pattern of regional urban growth, including: the deployment of new networks of transportation, supply and communications infrastructure, new environmental and urban laws, economic and cultural changes in the spheres of production and consumption. As a result, we notice the appearance of air condos, gated communities, business parks, shopping malls and closed industrial enclaves in the urban fabric. This thesis intends to explicit that, contrary to what is often said, the emergence of these new typologies has more factors involved in its making than a mere reaction to urban violence or the reproduction of a foreign model of urbanization. This new pattern of regional urban growth has been occurring long before the rise of social tensions or the opening of the Brazilian market in the mid 1990s.

E Pluribus Unum: A Study of Reconnecting a Broken Urban Fabric

Haecker, Krystyn 05 July 2013 (has links)
A city requires the architecture that comprises it to stitch together its urban fabric, creating connections between various, potentially disconnected, parts. Architecture mediates its surrounding public and open spaces, including plazas, streets, and parks. To fully understand a site of a future development, it is first important to understand the current and future conditions of the area within which the site is located, and in some cases its historical context as well. Only then can designers produce architecture that responds to and provides for its urban context for current and future generations. By studying the current, historic, and future contexts of Banneker Overlook, this thesis was developed by a thorough understanding of its site as a means of influencing the program and future architectural design. Banneker Overlook in its current state is a disconnected urban park in Southwest Washington, DC, originally intended as a connection point between two parts of the city. The purpose of this thesis is to reconnect the higher L'enfant Promenade with the lower Maine Avenue and Southwest Waterfront by means of the architecture and exterior public spaces. The program chosen for the site is a large public museum called the National Museum of the American People. It will "tell the story of ALL of the American People from prehistoric times to the present" (National Museum of the American People).  A large cultural building was used because of its capability to pull Washington residents and visitors to a single location coming from various, possibly disconnected, parts of the city. As a product of the site conditions, this thesis along with its site and building program became a study of creating connections of places, spaces, ideas, and people over time and space in an attempt to understand how architecture could represent this idea at both an urban and building scale. All of these ideas can be represented in our original national motto: E Pluribus Unum, "Out of Many, One." / Master of Architecture

The sense/sensation of space : a Railway Science, Technology and History Museum

Wenhold, Martin Werner 30 July 2008 (has links)
The development of station design provided new dimensions to both the sense and sensation of space. This is to be recaptured in the design of the museum, which requires obtaining an understanding of the influence, implications and impact railway stations and their supporting infrastructure had on architecture, the cityscape and the urban fabric, due to their large size, area and enclosed volume. Station design has contributed to modern design through the need to satisfy the uninterrupted, free-space enclosure of large volumes, necessitating progress in the knowledge of the structural application of the new materials discovered during the Industrial Revolution from which the modern architect is still benefiting. The impact of stations in these three mentioned fields furthermore had an indirect impact on society. The determination of all these influences by stations and their design will form the research subject of this dissertation. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Architecture / unrestricted

The typology of housing buildings and their relationship with the urban fabric of the city a case study of their transformations in the last forty years.

Carvalho, Jorge Pessoa de 09 May 2008 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the main factors that influenced the architectural typology of housing development projects built by real estate development corporations in the city of São Paulo in the last forty years. It also analyzes how the real estate sector\'s production has changed the city\'s pre-existent urban fabric with development projects that alter the architectural typology and the land use of the public space surrounding the new buildings, while at the same time keeping unchanged the road system and the remaining city spaces in other words, the consequences of the new use of the old grid.
