Interaction with Fictitious Futuristic Soundscapes for the Hearing Impaired : A Museum Experience

Hearing impairments are a sensitive component of our society. Lots of people are affected by them and considering this aspect in imagining and designing how the future will sound like is important. In this research project, a suggestion on a soundscape design tool to be used and manipulated by people affected by hearing disabilities is proposed. Together with this, it will be described as well how to implement and define a user interface with the scope of managing and manipulating these soundscapes. This project also faces the task of creating a setup oriented towards a museum setting: this carries with itself several variables to be kept in account, such as an unpredictable and quite broad users' range, and a special consideration for the lower-age range users. These have been found to be the most attending the museum environment, as far as it concerns Tekniska Museet. A three-phase experiment was then carried out. It involved a class of hearing-impaired pre-teenagers, the visitors of Tekniska and other hearing-impaired testers. Both qualitative and quantitative data about the interaction with the interface and the perceptual experience with the soundscapes were collected. The final assessments are that a focus on a playful aspect and the simplicity of shapes was the key for a suitable interface design focused on children, and that the contribution of the hearing impaired is relevant, at least in the later stage of the soundscape design process. / Hörselskador är en känslig del av vårt samhälle. Många människor påverkas av dem och det är viktigt att tänka på den aspekten då man föreställer sig och designar hur framtiden ska låta. Inom det här forskningsprojektet ska ett förslag på ett ljudlandskapsdesign-vektyg, ämnat att användas och hanteras av människor påverkade av hörselskador, framföras. Tillsammans med detta så beskrivs också hur ett användargränssnitt, med omfattningen att hantera och manipulera dessa ljudlandskap, fastställdes och implementerades inom systemet. Det här projektet möter dessutom utmaningen av att skapa ett system byggt för en museiutställning. Med detta tillkommer några variabler som måste hållas i åtanke, som en oförutsägbar och ganska bred användarskara. Speciellt stor omtanke läggs dock på yngre användare, som visade sig vara majoriteten av besökarna hos museet i fråga, nämligen Tekniska Museet. Ett experiment bestående av tre faser utförs, bestående av en skolklass av hörselskadade elever i tidiga tonårsåldern, Tekniska Museets besökare samt andra hörselskadade användare. Efter en insamling av både kvalitativa och kvantitativa data på interaktionen med gränssnittet samt den perceptuella upplevelsen av ljudlandskapen, dras slutsatsen att ett fokus på lekfullt utseende och enkelhet inom formerna är nyckeln för en lämplig gränssnitsdesign som har i åtanke barnens deltagande. Dessutom dras även slutsatsen att bidraget av hörselskadade individer är relevant, åtminstone i senare skeden av ljudlandskapsdesign-processen.

Markerless Tracking Using Polar Correlation Of Camera Optical Flow

We present a novel, real-time, markerless vision-based tracking system, employing a rigid orthogonal configuration of two pairs of opposing cameras. Our system uses optical flow over sparse features to overcome the limitation of vision-based systems that require markers or a pre-loaded model of the physical environment. We show how opposing cameras enable cancellation of common components of optical flow leading to an efficient tracking algorithm that captures five degrees of freedom including direction of translation and angular velocity. Experiments comparing our device with an electromagnetic tracker show that its average tracking accuracy is 80% over 185 frames, and it is able to track large range motions even in outdoor settings. We also present how opposing cameras in vision-based inside-looking-out systems can be used for gesture recognition. To demonstrate our approach, we discuss three different algorithms for recovering motion parameters at different levels of complete recovery. We show how optical flow in opposing cameras can be used to recover motion parameters of the multi-camera rig. Experimental results show gesture recognition accuracy of 88.0%, 90.7% and 86.7% for our three techniques, respectively, across a set of 15 gestures.

Virtual Reality for Improved Situation Awareness for Electronic Surve illance Operators : Implementing and comparing a virtual reality interface and its interactions with a traditional 2D interface

Electronic surveillance operators are a vital part of electronic warfare. Included in their field of responsibility is the analysis of, the assessment of, and the actions on potential threats. A vital component of these is an operator’s situation awareness. It governs to what degree of confidence and accuracy these aspects can be determined. An interface of an electronic surveillance operator must therefor be designed to provide and improve situation awareness. A technology that is hypothesized to improve situation awareness is virtual reality. Through its head-mounted display and handheld controllers it is aimed to create immersion and generate natural interactions. Information can be closely explored through new perspectives and the entire body can be used to interact with interfaces. These aspects and the additional dimension provided by virtual reality are the factors expected to improve situation awareness. The aim of this study is to explore the effects for situation awareness with a 3D interface in virtual reality compared to a traditional 2D interface for electronic surveillance operators. A user-centric approach was selected to evaluate how an existing 2D interface for electronic surveillance operators compares to a novel 3D interface in virtual reality. The existing interface is provided by Saab AB, and the 3D interface is developed for this particular case. Furthermore, a wrist-mounted menu and a stationary dashboard menu were implemented in virtual reality to support minimal implementation bias and for further discussion on interactions in virtual reality. The results indicate improved situation awareness in the virtual reality 3D interface. This is complemented by users’ reflections to generate a discussion for design guidelines, whether traditional interfaces may be replaced by virtual reality interfaces, and what effects virtual reality has on situation awareness. / Operatörer för elektronisk övervakning är en viktig del av elektronisk krigföring. Den styr i vilken grad av tillförlitlighet och noggrannhet dessa aspekter kan fastställas. Ett gränssnitt för dessa operatörer måste därför utformas för att ge och förbättra lägesuppfattning. En teknik som antas förbättra lägesuppfattningen är virtuell verklighet. Genom bildskärmar som bärs på huvudet och handhållna kontroller syftar den till att skapa immersion och naturliga interaktioner. Syftet med denna studie är att utforska effekterna för lägesuppfattning med ett 3D-gränssnitt i virtuell verklighet jämfört med ett traditionellt 2D-gränssnitt för elektroniska övervakningsoperatörer. Ett användarcentrerat tillvägagångssätt valdes för att utvärdera hur ett befintligt 2D-gränssnitt för elektroniska övervakningsoperatörer kan jämföras med ett nytt 3D-gränssnitt i virtuell verklighet. Det befintliga gränssnittet tillhandahålls av Saab AB och 3D-gränssnittet är utvecklat för just detta fall. Dessutom implementerades en handledsmonterad meny och en stationär instrumentpanelmeny i virtuell verklighet för att stödja minimal implementeringsbias och för ytterligare diskussion om interaktioner i virtuell verklighet. Resultaten indikerar förbättrad situationsmedvetenhet i 3D-gränssnittet för virtuell verklighet. Detta kompletteras med användarnas reflektioner för att generera en diskussion för designriktlinjer, om traditionella gränssnitt kan ersättas med virtuella verklighetsgränssnitt och vilka effekter virtuell verklighet har på lägesuppfattning.

Mobile phone's offer enriched ways of communicating and have become devices with a very strong personal attachment for most users. While being personal communication devices, mobile phones displays limits with user interfaces more focused on features and distinct applications rather thanproviding rich interactions with a focus on people and communication between people.The present project explores interaction design for the mobile phone as a more personal and social device. It's key outcome is the Relify concept with it's affiliated prototype. Relify is a mobile userinterface where presentation of people and communication is influenced by the character of the relationships with the people involved. Relify creates a personalized and flexible way for users to gain access to both personal communication and web feeds from third party services within aseamless user interface. This report describes the explorative design process leading to Relify, findings from field testing of it's prototype and design themes identified during the work. The work concludes that Relify demonstrates a personalized and fluent user interface with increased overview and a richer userexperience. Among it's experiential qualities is an increased sense of connection, that can excite communication between people. In summarizing the work, considerations and implications ondesigning mobile user interfaces are discussed against the experiences of this project.

This thesis firstly presents the exploration of an engaging user interface and navigation design for local community mobile applications. Furthermore, it seeks for the best suitable tool for both rapid prototyping and production development. The research and content is structured based on design and creation research methodology which is a user-centric and iterative process. To evaluate the suggested interface design and the selected tool, an interactive prototype was developed in this thesis. The results argues that card-based user interface and navigation design has the potential to enhance user engagement. In addition, AngularJS as the selected tool is a suitable framework for rapid prototyping as well as production development.
