Flexible and Programmable 5G Transport Networks

Raza, Muhammad Rehan January 2016 (has links)
The advent of 5th generation of mobile networks (5G) will introduce some new challenges for the transport network. Different strategies can be employed by the network providers to address these challenges with the aim to achieve an efficient utilization of network resources. The most feasible option to achieve this goal is to introduce intelligence in the transport infrastructure by designing a flexible and programmable transport network. Network function virtualization (NFV) and dynamic resource sharing (DRS) are two possible techniques for realizing a flexible transport network. NFV allows to dynamically push network functions to different locations in the network, while DRS allows for sharing transport resources in a flexible manner. Both of these strategies can be realized by employing a programmable control framework based on software defined networking (SDN), which has implications on both the network data and control planes. However, this thesis specifically focuses on the data plane aspects of NFV and the control plane aspects of DRS. Considering the network caching as a specific example of network function, the data plane aspects of NFV are studied in terms of different architectural options for cache placement in order to see which options are the most efficient in terms of network power consumption and cost. The results presented in this thesis show that placing large-sized caches farther in the network for a large group of users is the most efficient approach. The control plane aspects of DRS are analyzed in terms of which provisioning strategy should be used for sharing a limited amount of transport resources. The analysis is presented for both a single-tenant case (i.e., where the role of service and network provider is played by the same entity), and a multi-tenant case (i.e., where a network provider manages the resources assigned to different service providers in an intelligent way). The results show that DRS performs much better than the conventional static approach (i.e., without sharing of resources), which translates into significant cost savings for the network providers. / <p>QC 20161115</p>

Container Hosts as Virtual Machines : A performance study

Aspernäs, Andreas, Nensén, Mattias January 2016 (has links)
Virtualization is a technique used to abstract the operating system from the hardware. The primary gains of virtualization is increased server consolidation, leading to greater hardware utilization and infrastructure manageability. Another technology that can be used to achieve similar goals is containerization. Containerization is an operating-system level virtualization technique which allows applications to run in partial isolation on the same hardware. Containerized applications share the same Linux kernel but run in packaged containers which includes just enough binaries and libraries for the application to function. In recent years it has become more common to see hardware virtualization beneath the container host operating systems. An upcoming technology to further this development is VMware’s vSphere Integrated Containers which aims to integrate management of Linux Containers with the vSphere (a hardware virtualization platform by VMware) management interface. With these technologies as background we set out to measure the impact of hardware virtualization on Linux Container performance by running a suite of macro-benchmarks on a LAMP-application stack. We perform the macro-benchmarks on three different operating systems (CentOS, CoreOS and Photon OS) in order to see if the choice of container host affects the performance. Our results show a decrease in performance when comparing a hardware virtualized container host to a container hosts running directly on the hardware. However, the impact on containerized application performance can vary depending on the actual application, the choice of operating system and even the type of operation performed. It is therefore important to consider these three items before implementing container hosts as virtual machines.

When technology needs to catch up with the business needs : A study that focuses on how data virtualization can complement a data warehouse

Birkås, Philip January 2019 (has links)
Data warehouse has for a long time been, and still is, an important asset for organizations to store data for analysis. In the last decade, an exponential increase in data has taken place, giving organizations increasingly greater opportunities to make data-driven decisions in completely new ways. Nevertheless, in many cases, it also puts pressure on organizations to use data as an asset to react and take advantage of opportunities in a harder business climate, or even to maintain competitiveness. In order to enable organizations to be able to react in time, flexibility requirements are imposed on the techniques used to handle data for analysis. The traditional best practices for data warehouse is predicted to soon be out of date. Organizations need to find new ways to quickly change and adapt to the needs of the market. Many organizations currently have a traditional data warehouse, and this study examines how well data virtualization can help increase flexibility by being added as a complement. This is examined through the question:How can data virtualization complement and improve a traditional data warehouse? To answer this question, a literature analysis, and a case study followed by an implementation is carried out, in which the data collection consists primarily of tests performed on the implementation result, observations and interviews. The result shows a divided picture, where performed tests can potentially be seen as questioning parts of the interview results and existing literature. Based on the result, some findings can be made about in which use-cases data virtualization does not fit, and gives a picture of when it can be an alternative. Data virtualization should be seen as an extension of a data warehouse that enables the federation, transformation and computation of data, where data structures can be changed at any time. However, an organization that embraces this more flexible solution must be prepared for substantially increased response times in data extraction.

Virtualisierung und Cloud Computing : Konzepte, Technologiestudie, Marktübersicht

Meinel, Christoph, Willems, Christian, Roschke, Sebastian, Schnjakin, Maxim January 2011 (has links)
Virtualization and Cloud Computing belong to the most important issues for operators of large ICT infrastructures today. There are a large number of various technologies, products, and business models for entirely different application scenarios. The study at hand gives a detailed overview on latest developments in concepts and technologies of virtualization – beginning with classic server virtualization, continuing with infrastructures for virtual workplaces, through to application virtualization and makes an attempt to classify all these variants of virtualization. When investigating on the concepts of Cloud Computing, the report introduces basic principles as well as different types of architecture and use cases. The extensive analysis of benefits of Cloud Computing and possible reservations when using cloud resources within an enterprise context is evidence that Cloud Computing offers great opportunities, but is not worth considering for any kind of application scenario, legal framework or business scenario. The subsequent market study on virtualization technology shows that each of the major manufacturers – Citrix, Microsoft, and VMware – offer products for any variant of virtualization and highlights the important differences between the products and the respective strengths of the vendors. For example, the Citrix solution on Virtual Desktop Infrastructures comes up very well-engineered, while Microsoft can only rely on standard technology in this field. VMware, the market leader in virtualization technology, has gained the biggest popularity in data centers and offers the only product implementing real fault tolerance. On the other hand, Microsoft is able to score with seamless integration of their virtualization products into existing Windows-based infrastructures. In the area of Cloud Computing systems, there are some open source software projects that are very possibly suitable for the productive operation of so called private clouds.
