Westin, Elina January 2011 (has links)

Predicting Leader Effectiveness: Personality Traits and Character Strengths

O'Neil, Dennis P 07 May 2007 (has links)
Personality traits have been used extensively over the past forty years in assessing leadership potential, with varying degrees of success. A major limitation of this research has been the measures of personality. Another important limitation has been the availability of quantifiable measures of leader effectiveness. A third limitation is the lack of longitudinal studies. Because of these limitations, researchers have had difficulty determining the strength of personality traits as predictors of leadership effectiveness over time. Recent studies have used the Five Factor Model of personality to predict leadership effectiveness (e.g., Hogan, Curphy, & Hogan, 1994; Judge, Bono, Ilies, & Gerhardt, 2002; McCormack & Mellor, 2002); and researchers in positive psychology (e.g., Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005; Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000) have suggested that character strength and virtues (i.e., courage, temperance, and transcendence) might also offer an approach useful in predicting leadership success. This research builds on these approaches and examined two trait-based instruments, the Big Five instrument (NEO-PI-R) and the Values in Action Inventory of Strength (VIA-IS) instrument as they relate to leader effectiveness. Using undergraduates at the United States Military Academy as participants, the research examines the relationship and efficacy of the NEO-PI-R and the VIA-IS in predicting leadership effectiveness over a two and a half year study. Regression analysis demonstrated that conscientiousness was the most significant predictor of leadership effectiveness. However, latent growth curve analysis suggests that there are three distinct patterns of leadership effectiveness. Using mixture modeling, these trajectories are best explained by the personality factors and virtue variables of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and temperance. The findings of this study have broad implications for emergent leader selection, leader development programs, and executive coaching in organizations. / Dissertation

Hume&#039 / s Moral Theory As Expressed In His A Treatise Of Human Nature And Enquiries Concerning Human Understanding And Concerning The Principles Of Morals

Gulcan, Nur Yeliz 01 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to examine Hume&rsquo / s moral theory as expressed in his two main books, Treatise and Enquiry and to show the defects of this theory. Without explaining some basic doctrines such as moral motivation, moral judgment, sympathy, passions, virtues, justice e.t.c., it is not possible to understand Hume&rsquo / s moral theory. To this aim, first, Hume&rsquo / s moral theory is explained in detail. Next, in order to provide a deeper understanding of the theory, its relation with his epistemology and his aesthetics are explained. Afterwards, few philosophers who influenced Hume&rsquo / s thought such as Hobbes, Mandeville, Hutcheson have been briefly discussed. Consequently, it is claimed that Hume&rsquo / s moral theory has a heterogeneous structure so it is difficult to understand his moral theory. Hume&rsquo / s moral theory contains an ambiguity due to his conception of sympathy, which has led to some misinterpretations.

Vertybių hierarchija ankstyvojoje J. Mikelinsko kūryboje / The Hierarchy of the Virtues in the Early Period of the Creative Work by Jonas Mikelinskas

Gustaitė, Ilma 18 June 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The hierarchy of the virtues in the early period of the creative work by Jonas Mikelinskas Main goal of work „ The Hierarchy of the Virtues in the Early Period of the Creative Work by Jonas Mikelinskas” is to reveal writer’s created character personality conception, to evaluate the author's moral hero according to the philosopher I. Kant categorical imperative, also - to reveal the literary creator's artistic expression techniques and tools, the most prime is Aesop's language. Writer J. Mikelinskas - one of most moral Lithuanian literary agents, created a different genre of epic works, which are posted on morality, conscience topic. Therefore, the work attempts to solve human moral and ethical values in the hierarchy of issues, to reveal the author's desire in his works, to draw the personage which is constantly looking for the truth path in his life. This path inevitably associated with the intensive relationship in the Lithuanian society 7th decade, and all that J. Mikelinskas writes without lies and beautiful metaphors, but simply using the Aesop's language: stating that moment problems, illustrating the situation. The writer’s created hero – a lonely man who feels a strong demand to become a conscience judge of himself and other individuals. And precisely because the court of conscience can’t manage without Kant's moral philosophy, the work subject is closely associated with imperative. In early J. Mikelinskas works respect, responsibility, duty, compassion - each... [to full text]

Teologinių dorybių samprata ir x mokyklos 14 - 15 metų amžiaus mokinių požiūris į jas / The concept of theological virtues and the view of 14 - 15 year old pupils of X School

Karpavičienė, Jolita 20 January 2014 (has links)
THE MISSING LINK: MARITAL VIRTUES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO INDIVIDUAL FUNCTIONING, COMMUNICATION, AND RELATIONSHIP ADJUSTMENT

Veldorale-Brogan, Amanda 01 January 2008 (has links)
Relationship adjustment research is being expanded beyond established connections with communication and individual functioning. In recent years, researchers have looked to positive psychology and virtues. That research shifts the focus from psychopathology and communication to more core values and ways of being. The present study seeks to expand this knowledge base using Blaine Fowers (2000) framework of marital virtues. His framework views what a person puts into an intimate relationship as an important predictor of relationship adjustment. The present study uses this framework in conjunction with previous research to examine the direct and indirect links amongst individual functioning, marital virtues, communication, and marital adjustment. Data were collected from a sample of 422 married and cohabitating individuals using a self-report survey. Marital virtues and communication were found to partially mediate the relationship between individual well-being and relationship adjustment. In addition, communication was found to partially mediate the relationship between marital virtues and relationship adjustment. Findings provide initial support for the notion that character strengths matter to both communication and relationship adjustment.

Kantian Ethics and the Formula of Humanity: Towards Virtues and Ends

Bachour, Omar 17 December 2013 (has links)
The aim of this work is to show that criticisms of Kantian ethics from the field of virtue ethics misfire because they rely on a widespread reading of Kant which centers on the Groundwork and the Formula of Universal Law as the key elements in his moral philosophy. This reading, I argue, is susceptible both to charges of “empty formalism” and moral “rigorism” as well as the complaint voiced by virtue ethicists that Kantian ethics lacks a full-blooded account of the virtues, along with the attendant desiderata of sociality, character and the emotions. In response, I defend the proposal that the Formula of Humanity and the Doctrine of Virtue in the Metaphysics of Morals represent the final form of Kant’s ethical thought. If this is accurate, a rich and novel ethical theory emerges, and many of the criticisms from the field of virtue ethics are subsequently disarmed.
