Considering the recognized role of social wasps in the balance of ecosystems, it is clear the importance of studies on the diversity of these insects and, only from the knowledge of the behavior of the social wasps, it is possible to elaborate adequate methodologies for their collection. Thus, considering the importance of fauna inventories, the aim of this paper was to carry out a detailed analysis of the studies of diversity in social wasps conducted in Minas Gerais, when evaluating the use of attractive traps. Due to the lack of studies dedicated to the spatial attributes of the social wasp’s species, or the methods used for its collection, the study also aimed to compare the attractiveness of different variables in the elaboration of attractive traps. It also aimed to estimate and analyze in local scale the optimal distance for the installation of these traps for studies of social wasp diversity. The detailed analysis of the diversity studies followed the steps proposed by the PRISMA methodology for systematic studies and metaanalysis. The methodological procedure included the development of selection criteria, definition of search strategies, evaluation of study quality and extraction of relevant data. The experimental phase was developed at the Botanic Garden of the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, which comprises a fragment area of Montane Semi-deciduous Forest, with 84 hectares of extension, located in the Juiz de Fora urban area, in the southeast of the State of Minas Gerais, Brasil. It was possible to observe that Minas Gerais is the State with the largest number of studies, however, the south and southeast regions concentrate most of these studies, therefore, it is highlighted the importance of the research development in the other regions, especially in the northern region, where the Caatinga Biome is located. The experiments showed that the traps must be made of bottles of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) of 0.5L, filled with 150mL of artificial juice of mango, guava or passion fruit, and installed at distances between 10m and 150m from each other. The study was able to optimize the method of attractive traps as to the size of the traps, the type of attractive food source and the number of traps used in the field.

Vespas solitárias (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) ocupando ninhos-armadilha no Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta, Ubatuba, SP / Solitary wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) occupying trap nests in the Anchieta Island State Park, Ubatuba, SP.

Nascimento, Ana Luiza de Oliveira 17 June 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine the species composition and the abundance of solitary wasps that nest in preexisting cavities at Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta (Anchieta Island State Park), Ubatuba, SP, Brazil. Sampling was made during two years, from September 2007 to August 2009, utilizing bamboo canes and tubes made of black cardboard as trap-nests. The traps were inspected once a month and those containing completed nests were collected, replaced with empty ones and taken to the laboratory. In the laboratory, the nests were kept at room temperature and observed daily until the adults emerged. A total of 142 nests with 457 individual brood cells of 14 species were obtained: nine species of digger wasps (Crabronidae), two species of mason wasps (Eumeninae, Vespidae), two species of spider wasps (Pompilidae), and one species of the roach-hunting wasps (Sphecidae). The most abundant family were digger wasps with 67.6% of all brood cells, followed by mason wasps (23.6%), roach-hunting wasps (5.9%) and spider wasps (2.9%). The most abundant species were: Trypoxylon lactitarse, Pachodynerus nasidens, Trypoxylon sp 2 aff nitidum, Podium denticulatum and Trypoxylon albitarse, Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) sp2, Trypoxylon punctivertex and Auplopus pratens were the rare species. The natural enemies associated with the nests included Hymenoptera (Chrysididae, Ichneumonidae and Chalcididae) and Diptera (Sarcophagidae). The most abundant enemy was the parasitoid Amobia floridensis (Diptera) accounting for 58.3% of all attacked brood cells and it was found in nests of Trypoxylon, Pachodynerus and Podium, whereas the chrysidids were found only in nests of Trypoxylon. The highest nesting frequencies occurred during the hottest and wettest period of the year and a significant correlation was found between the number of occupied trap-nests per month and the values of temperature. The sex ratio for Pachodynerus brevithorax and P. denticulatum was not significantly different from 1:1. On the other hand, for Trypoxylon lactitarse and Trypoxylon sp2 aff nitidum the sex ratio was strongly male-biased whereas for Trypoxylon sp5 aff nitidum and P. nasidens the sex ratio was strongly female-biased.

Mudanças morfológicas e glandulares associadas ao polietismo etário em Polybia paulista (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) / Morphological and glandular changes associated th the age polyethism of Polybia paulista (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

The division of labor is a central theme in the study of social insects. In bees and wasps this ability is regulated for age castes of the workers. In Apis mellifera, several authors have shown selective activation of the glands for job in colony, and reduced body weight for foraging. In social wasps age polyethism among workers is a relatively unexplored subject. We tried to identify and to describe in Polybia paulista if the bodily and glandular changes are related to the age of the wasps or to the use of the structures in the social function. Workers of different ages at which was restricted social behavior since its emergence and workers of different ages with full social development were analyzed. When Polybia paulista was in captivity, increased body mass, decreased the mass of mesosoma and decreased the salivary and mandibular glands secretion in relation to the age advancement of the wasps. While, allowing normal social development, there was an increase in body mass, the mass of the mesosoma and the salivary and mandibular glands secretion in relation to age. Apparently, social interaction activates the formation and transition of age castes in Polybia paulista. In these wasps the bodily and glandular changes observed were related to age. Probably social interaction and the use of structures within the nest are influencing the direction of such changes. As consequence, factors that influence the demography of the colony, as the development stage or the welfare of the colony, may be decisive in the age castes regulation. These results contrast with the model proposed for the Apis mellifera age polyethism and with observations of glandular activity in the social wasp Polistes versicolor.

The knowledge of the social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae; Polistinae) in semidecidual seasonal forests of northwest of Sao Paulo State is very poorly, causing a lack of information on the diversity of these wasps from these areas which has been degraded by the advance of the economic model adopted in the past. This work is a survey of social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae; Polistinae) in the period of September 2005 to December 2006 in a fragment of forest in Paulo de Faria-SP, Brazil. Seven species of wasps from 4 genera were collected, using passive methods (Malaise and Bottle trap) and active methods (meat trap and attractive liquid). Agelaia was the most abundant genus in all used methodologies, representing 80% of all samples. The survey showed a low number of species collected in the fragment and the efficiency of the methodologies employed, the collecting active with the aid of attractive liquid was very efficient in the capture of wasps.

Biologia comportamental de Synoeca surinama : enxameio e interações socias (Vespidae, Polistinae: Epiponini) /

Santos, Carlos Alberto dos. January 2010 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In social vespids there are two distinct groups: species that found their colonies independently, with an inseminated queen starting the nest, but she is eventually helped by co-founders; and species that found their colonies by swarming, where it is formed by one or more inseminated queens accompanied by a group of workers. In Vespidae, swarm-founding appeared independently at least four times, in Vespinae (Provespa), in Ropalidiini (a few species of Ropalidia and Polybioides in the old world) and all the 19 neotropical genera of the Epiponini. The co-ordination of the swarm towards the new nest site is apparently mediated by pheromones. In the Epiponini studied so far, except by Apoica pallens, workers rub their gaster in the new nest site, as well as in spots between the old and new site, releasing a chemical trail that is followed by the colony in the swarming. Compounds released by the Richards' gland or the venom gland are apparently used in the production of the chemical trail. The aim of this study was to describe the process of swarming in Synoeca surinama, involving behaviors and displayed interactions, so that six swarming were observed. The main cause of the swarming in the studied colonies was nest destruction caused by rains with strong winds. Pre- swarming phase was characterized by behavioral alterations in the colonies, like performance of "Buzz running"; interruption of "Pulp foraging", "Building" behavior and "Oviposition"; immature's cannibalism ; "Assembling groups of inactive wasps"; "Removal of pulp from the envelope" and "Flight around the nest". In the swarming phase the scouts (older wasps) rubbed their abdomens in the site of the new nest and in points between the old and new site, producing a possible chemical trail. The marking of the possible chemical trail was considered diffuse, because different scouts were marking... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Ecology and natural history of the Masarid wasps of the world with an assessment of their role as pollinators in southern Africa (Hymenoptera : Vespoidea : Masaridae)

Gess, Sarah Kathleen January 1993 (has links)
The worldwide knowledge of the ecology and natural history of the masarid wasps, those wasps which bee-like provision their nest cells with pollen and nectar, is synthesized and discussed putting into context the investigations concerning nesting and flower visiting by southern African masarids conducted by the present author. Masarids are found mostly to favour warm to hot areas with relatively low rainfall and open scrubby vegetation. At the generic level the masarids of the Nearctic, Neotropical and Australian regions are distinct from each other and from those of the Palaearctic and Afrotropical regions combined. No species are shared between regions. Southern Africa is apparently the area of greatest species diversity. In this region, at least, there is a high incidence of narrow endemism. Masarids are associated with a relatively small range of plant families. Where sufficient records are available distinct major preferences are shown between zoogeographical regions. Relatedness of plant preferences between zoogeographical regions is apparent when relatedness of plant taxa is considered. Within a region there is marked overlap in masarid generic preferences for flower families. At the specific level there is marked oligolecty and narrow polylecty. The majority of nesting studies indicate that nest construction, egg laying and provisioning are performed by a single female per nest, however, nest sharing has been alledged for two species. No parasitic masarids have been recorded. Egg laying precedes provisioning. Mass provisioning is the rule. According to species, nests are sited in the ground, in non-friable soil or friable soil, in earthen vertical banks, on stones or on plants. Seven nest types are defined. Three bonding agents, water, nectar and self-generated silk are used. Masarids are evaluated as potential pollinators of their forage plants in southern Africa. The "masarid pollination syndrome", though less broad is shown to fall within that designated melittophily. The case studies considered make it clear that, whereas the masarids visiting some flower groups are members of a guild of potential pollinators, the masarids visiting others are probably their most important pollinators. Increasing land utilization is shown to threaten the existence of narrowly endmic masarid species.
