Approximately 4.600 valid species are recorded in the world and more than 600 in Brazil. Despite being a group with high species richness and very common in Amazon, the knowledge about the diversity and biology of this taxon in Amazon region is considered insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to contribute for the knowledge on wasp fauna, presenting information about the species that occur in a representative area of this subregion, “Reserva Ducke”, as well as an identification key for the species and a guide regarding the colonies of the wasps. Besides a structured inventory during the year of 2010 in a “Programa de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade” (PPBio) plot of 25 Km 2 and the capture of wasps besides the active search, we analized all the wasps deposited in the Coleção de Invertebrados of Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) captured with indirect methods: Malaise trap, suspended trap, luminous trap, attractive trap and the fogging technique. There were recorded 118 species allocated in 30 genera, representing about 20% of this family fauna to Brazil. Polistinae had the highest species richness with 86 species in 17 genera, and it is considered the third largest social wasp diversity in reserves and parks in the Neotropics Region, while for Eumeninae had 32 species placed in 13 genera, Masarinae was not recorded for “Reserva Ducke”. Forty colonies of 18 species were registered and mapped. For the structured inventory, 58 species of social wasps were identified, Agelaia fulvofasciata, A. testacea and Angiopolybia pallens were the most frequent species in active search. Besides, nine new records are presented for the state of Amazonas, four of Polistinae (Clypearia apicipennis, Metapolybia nigra, Parachartergus richardsi, Pseudopolybia langi) and five of Eumeninae (Eumenes versicolor, Omicron criticum, Pachodynerus gianellii, Stenosigma testaceum, Zethus toltecus) and a new record of Leipomeles pusilla to Brazil.

The objective of this research was to study the biological control of Diaphania hyalinata L. and Diaphania nitidalis Stoll (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on the cucumber cultivars Sprint 440 II and Vlasstar. The causes of mortality of these moths were evaluated in the field with the objective of construct ecological life tables for these insects. The predation by Crysoperla sp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), Paratrechina sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and parasitism by Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) were the most important factor of eggs losses of D. hyalinata. The mortality at egg stage of D. nitidalis was mainly influenced by Paratrechina sp. and T. pretiosum. The predation by Labidus coecus Latr. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) was the most important agent of pupae mortality in D. hyalinata and D. nitidalis species. The larval stages of D. hyalinata and D. nitidalis were considered to be the most critical as it showed the highest mortality. The forth and fifth instars of D. hyalinata and the third and fifth instars of D. nitidalis were the most critical stage of these insects. The key mortality factors of D. hyalinata were the predation of larvae by Polybia ignobillis Haliday (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) (forth instar) and Polybia scutellaris White (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) and the parasitism by Diptera: Tachinidae (fifth instar). The key mortality factors of D. nitidalis were the predation of third instar larvae by P. ignobilis, and for fifth instar larvae were: parasitism by Braconidae sp.3, rainfall and failure in ecdisis.

Klein, Ricardo Pablo January 2018 (has links)
Mutualistic ecological interactions are those that bring benefits to all involved organisms. Floral visitation provides food for visiting animals, while allowing sexual reproduction in plants. Meanwhile, the dispersion syndrome theory assumes that there are certain floral attributes (including rewards) that can attract certain pollinators and drive away others. The decline of bees has been reported worldwide and finding ecologically equivalent species is crucial to the preservation of biodiversity. Wasps have ecological functions like bees although they do not depend exclusively on pollen and nectar to survive. The objective of this research was to evaluate the differences in floral visitation between bees/plants and wasps/plants. The first chapter has an interaction network approach. The second chapter presents a multivariate approach where we evaluate differences between plants according to the floral visiting wasps and bees. We carried out sampling in conservation units of the municipality of Porto Alegre. In each study area, transects were defined in three distinct environments: grassland, forest and edges between them. Sampling at each transection occurred between 9 and 17 h. During this period, flowering plants from 20 cm to 4 m tall were observed, and their floral visiting Hymenoptera collected with the aid of an entomological net for 10 min on each plant. The network metrics were calculated with R software with the Bipartite package. Wasps and bees are distinctive floral visitors given their different patterns of interaction networks. Wasps maintain half of the plant diversity after the hypothetical events of bee extinction. Under a multivariate approach, plants visited by wasps and bees did not form distinct groups. The widder the corolla of the flower, the less is the floral visitation of wasps. We conclude that wasps can be secondary pollinators for the maintenance of plant diversity, although they are able to maintain lower plant diversity in bee’s extinction scenarios. In addition, the floral attributes of wasps and bees are not different from each other, pointing to the fact that wasps may be pollinators of a larger number of plants than predicted.

Gomes, Bruno. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The knowledge of the social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae; Polistinae) in semidecidual seasonal forests of northwest of Sao Paulo State is very poorly, causing a lack of information on the diversity of these wasps from these areas which has been degraded by the advance of the economic model adopted in the past. This work is a survey of social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae; Polistinae) in the period of September 2005 to December 2006 in a fragment of forest in Paulo de Faria-SP, Brazil. Seven species of wasps from 4 genera were collected, using passive methods (Malaise and Bottle trap) and active methods (meat trap and attractive liquid). Agelaia was the most abundant genus in all used methodologies, representing 80% of all samples. The survey showed a low number of species collected in the fragment and the efficiency of the methodologies employed, the collecting active with the aid of attractive liquid was very efficient in the capture of wasps. / Mestre

Agelaia vicina has the largest nest built among social insects, but little is known yet about its development, growth and structure. In this work, the development of two nests of A. vicina was followed. Studies were done through analysis of images to estimate the growth of nests. The material collected below the nests was examined to estimate the quantity produced by the colonial individuals in the course of the seasons. To have more information on nest architecture and structure, nests were collected to analyze their structure. They were untangled and every layer was analysed. It was observed that the cycle of the two colonies studied was similar, i.e. in the period of drought, population increases and at the end of the rainy season there is a sudden drop in production. The colonies have shown great capacity for growth, and construction of the nest, doubling in size in about six months.

Diversity of insects from the Vespidae family in three ecological niches (forest, forest border, and agricultural area) in six communities in the Coroico and Coripata municipalities, department of La Paz

Zapata Mayta, Edwin 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The Vespidae family (order Hymenoptera) is comprised of 4500 species of wasps in 268 genera and 7 subfamilies. These wasps prey upon a wide range of insects, including Lepidopteran caterpillars. Because of their low prey specificity, the use of Vespid wasps in biological control programs is limited. However, in their natural habitat, they play a role in controlling populations of some pest species. This study was conducted in six different communities in the department of La Paz within the municipalities of Coroico and Coripata. Three ecological niches were selected in each community: 1) the forest, 2) the edge of the forest and 3) a crop producing area. In each study unit, three Malaise traps were set up on a 14 day collection cycle from June to December 2007. Over the six month study period, we collected a total of 772 individuals and identified 36 different morphospecies from the six communities. The most abundant genera collected were Protopolybia sp., Mischocyttarus sp., and an unidentified genus (morphospecies #2) which had the greatest abundance of individuals in all of the different ecological niches. The niche factor did not have a significant influence on species diversity in the three ecological niches studied. Generally, this group of wasps is found in all three ecological niches.

In social vespids there are two distinct groups: species that found their colonies independently, with an inseminated queen starting the nest, but she is eventually helped by co-founders; and species that found their colonies by swarming, where it is formed by one or more inseminated queens accompanied by a group of workers. In Vespidae, swarm-founding appeared independently at least four times, in Vespinae (Provespa), in Ropalidiini (a few species of Ropalidia and Polybioides in the old world) and all the 19 neotropical genera of the Epiponini. The co-ordination of the swarm towards the new nest site is apparently mediated by pheromones. In the Epiponini studied so far, except by Apoica pallens, workers rub their gaster in the new nest site, as well as in spots between the old and new site, releasing a chemical trail that is followed by the colony in the swarming. Compounds released by the Richards´ gland or the venom gland are apparently used in the production of the chemical trail. The aim of this study was to describe the process of swarming in Synoeca surinama, involving behaviors and displayed interactions, so that six swarming were observed. The main cause of the swarming in the studied colonies was nest destruction caused by rains with strong winds. Pre- swarming phase was characterized by behavioral alterations in the colonies, like performance of “Buzz running”; interruption of “Pulp foraging”, “Building” behavior and “Oviposition”; immature´s cannibalism ; “Assembling groups of inactive wasps”; “Removal of pulp from the envelope” and “Flight around the nest”. In the swarming phase the scouts (older wasps) rubbed their abdomens in the site of the new nest and in points between the old and new site, producing a possible chemical trail. The marking of the possible chemical trail was considered diffuse, because different scouts were marking... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
