The effects of estrogenic endocrine disruptors on the osmoregulatory functions in euryhaline fish

Al-Jandal, Noura January 2011 (has links)
Osmoregulation is an essential process to maintain water and ionic balance and when euryhaline fish move between freshwater and seawater environments as part of their life cycle this presents additional osmoregulatory challenges. Migrating fish can be exposed in both environments to pollutants such as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that include natural hormones (e.g. 17β-estradiol; E2), synthetic hormones (e.g. 17α-ethinylestradiol; EE2), and industrial chemicals (e.g. nonylphenol). The focus of this thesis was to study the effects of different categories of EDCs on the osmoregulatory functions of euryhaline fish such as three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Osmoregulatory variables (such as osmolality, water and ionic content) were compared in plasma and tissues (white muscle and carcass) of rainbow trout. This validated the use of specific tissue parameters as a surrogate of plasma responses to various osmoregulatory challenges. Waterborne exposure to 17α-ethinylestradiol revealed differential sensitivity of vitellogenesis in the three-spined sticklebacks (no induction) and rainbow trout, but had a significant effect on calcium homeostasis in both species. Intraperitoneal implants of 17β-estradiol reduced CaCO3 production and apparent water absorption in the intestine and increased in tissue calcium stores of seawater-acclimated trout, but fish were able to compensate and showed no overall osmoregulatory disturbance. Waterborne exposure to nonylphenol in freshwater trout was also investigated, but no effects on osmoregulation were found up to 2 ng/l. Overall, estrogens can affect osmoregulation differentially in euryhaline fish species, and sometimes at EDC levels lower than the threshold for reproductive effects (i.e. vitellogenin induction).

Spatialisation du bilan hydrique des sols pour caractériser la distribution et la croissance des espèces forestières dans un contexte de changement climatique / Soil water balance mapping to characterize forest species growth and distribution in a climate change context

Piedallu, Christian 09 January 2012 (has links)
Numerous researches focus on species distribution shifts toward ecological conditions most suited to plants under climate change. Ecological indices used to characterize species ecology and to define their vulnerability over broad areas are often at coarse resolution and are determined by data availability. The aim of this work was to map soil water balance and its different components at a fine spatial resolution, and to evaluate their interest to model plant distribution and growth over the whole French forests. We firstly modeled and mapped the solar radiation and the soil water holding capacity of forest soils. These data were combined with temperatures and precipitation to map the soil water balance. For solar radiation, the main results showed that this parameter is only accurately predicted at the French scale when cloudiness is taken into account. We also showed that soil water holding capacity can be mapped at the French scale using the basic information collected on numerous plots from the French national forest inventory. Values extracted from the soil water holding capacity map allowed predicting tree species growth with efficiency similar to values estimated on plots. We also demonstrated soil water balance is more efficient than climatic water balance or precipitation to model species distribution, mainly for hygrophilous and xerophilous species. These results suggest importance of available water could be underestimated when determining the ecological niche of species. These maps allow to improve species ecology knowledge and to help in the determination of their vulnerability area to climate change.

Observation et modélisation des échanges d’énergie et de masse de jeunes peuplements forestiers du Sud-Ouest de la France / Observation and modelling of energy and mass exchanges in young forest stands in south-western France

Moreaux, Virginie 26 March 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, the juvenile phase of forest stands of southwestern France was studied in order to characterise soil-vegetation-atmosphere exchanges. The study focused on contrasted structures of young pines and Eucalyptus stands. The first part of this research was to study experimentally the mass and energy exchanges of young plantations of pines and Eucalyptus growing in southwestern France. Continuous measurements of CO2 and H2O fluxes, energy balance, sapflow and tree growth and production were carried out for two years, a period marked by repeated episodes of drought. The behavior of these species was compared, as well as the effects of the environment and cultural practices on these ecosystems. The annual water and carbon balances, growth and production of the three stands were established and compared. These measurements were enriched by data already available and were based on the 1D-mechanistic model of forest production and soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer GRAECO (INRA-EPHYSE). The second part of the thesis focused on developing a new version of the model to be applied to crop systems for fast-growing forest biomass. By coupling this evolution of the model with the 3D-model MAESTRA (Medlyn 2004), the assumptions of vertical and horizontal homogeneities in the canopy can be exceeded thus accounting for the effect of the three-dimensional structure on the radiative, CO2 and water vapor transfers in young stands, where crowns are separate and the understorey is well-developed. In addition, the model was supplemented by three new modules describing the dynamics of soil carbon (Roth-C) and the growth and functioning of the understory and coppice. It was evaluated on existing data covering different sites and time series and including a series of forest practices, such as plowing, stump removal, superficial disking, seeding, early thinning, thinnings and cutting down close to the ground. Finally, as an exploratory work, this model has been implemented on a data set describing the local climate forced by the A2 climate scenario which was regionalized on a SAFRAN grid point (‘Météo-France’) for three forest itineraries of maritime pine and Eucalyptus, in order to assess the potential productivity of these systems.

Importance des compromis liés à l'eau chez une espèce caractéristique des milieux bordiers, la vipère aspic (Vipera aspis) / Importance of water-based tradeoffs in a reptile using ecotone habitats, the Aspic viper (Vipera aspis)

Dupoué, Andréaz 06 November 2014 (has links)
A major goal in ecology is to understand and predict species responses to environmental variations. Clarifying the proximate factors involved is a crucial step to unravel general ecological patterns such as habitat use or species distribution. In this context, the use of an ecophysiological approach can be particularly relevant. Trophic resource and energy tradeoffs attracted considerable interest but water-based tradeoffs remain relatively overlooked to date. However water is a critical, often limiting resource that must be considered. The regulation of water balance may have a key influence on physiological and behavioral tradeoffs. The main objective in this thesis is to evaluate the importance of water-based tradeoffs in a species characteristic of "ecotone" habitats (hedgerows, edges), the Aspic viper (Vipera aspis). This species is viviparous and highly depends on thermal conditions during reproduction. Our general hypothesis is that, as thermal conditions, hydric conditions should expose individuals to important physiological and behavioral tradeoffs, especially during reproduction (i.e., pregnancy). We combined descriptive (thermoregulation, water losses) and experimental studies (manipulation of water availability) that suggest a significant tradeoff between thermoregulation and water balance regulation. Water-based tradeoffs induce physiological and behavioral adjustments that are relevant to understand reproductive strategies and identify possible transgenerational (mother-embryos) conflicts. As energy or thermal resource, water should therefore also be considered to address ecological or evolutive questions.

Modelagem chuva-vazão utilizando framework JAMS em área de afloramento do Sistema Aquífero Guarani / Rainfall-runoff modeling using framework JAMS in the area of outcrop zone of the Guarani Aquifer System

Ribeiro, Aline da Silva 01 June 2012 (has links)
The National System of Information Resources (SNIRH) has not monitored all Brazilian rivers. This lack of information reflects in the fault estimation of water availability for the multiple uses. In this context, the hydrological models stood out for trying to address this lack of data. However, it is noted that many models do not generate good results when performed outside of the study area where they were created. Therefore, due to flexibility in the choice of hydrological processes to be simulated, this study used the framework JAMS (Jena Adaptable Modelling System) in the construction of a specific rainfall-runoff model to the basin of the Ribeirão da Onça monitored watershed, which is embedded in an outcrop area of one of the most important aquifers in the world, the Guarani Aquifer System (SAG). The JAMS presented as a simplified and flexible for use on the necessary adaptations to process and generate consistent data with the climatological and hydrological characteristics of the study area. The constructed model was effective in predicting the hydrological response of the basin evaluated, with a Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.76 and 0.81, for periods of calibration and validation of the model, respectively. It was also satisfactory prediction of runoff volume, with a bias of -1.3 and -1.03% for the two periods. The runoff time series reproduction showed that the baseflow represents from 79 to 89% of the annual total runoff in the Ribeirão da Onça watershed. Therefore, the constructed model becomes an important tool for reconstruting the time series fluviometric data from Ribeirão da Onça basin, important for the improvement of the recharge studies and SAG protection.

Balanço hídrico, injúria renal aguda e mortalidade de pacientes em unidade de terapia intensiva / Fluid balance, acute kidney injury and mortality of intensive care unit patients

Avila, Maria Olinda Nogueira 03 November 2014 (has links)
Sepsis, major surgery and low cardiac output are the main causes of AKI worldwide. In the majority of these situations, volume expansion is part of both prevention and therapeutic management of AKI. However, maintaining liberal fluid infusion strategy can cause fluid overload and it is associated to poor outcomes in critically ill patients. Positive fluids balance (FB) frequently occurs in these patients receiving high volume infusion, even if the urinary output is adequate (above 0.5ml/kg/h). In this situation, if there is no serum creatinine (SCr) increase, AKI will not be diagnosed by current Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) criteria, even with a clear kidney inability to eliminate the body excess of fluid. This prospective, paired control, cohort study aimed to evaluate the association between positive FB and subsequent development of AKI by KDIGO criteria and mortality in 233 critically ill adults. By multiple logistic regression, we showed that each 100 ml increase in FB was independently associated to a 4% increase in the chances for developing subsequent AKI (OR 1.04; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.08). When compared to the first quartile, the fourth FB quartile (FB > +1793ml/day) was associated with a 3.12 times greater chance of developing AKI (OR 3.12; 95% CI 1.13 to 8.65). Compared to FB zero to 1,500ml/24h, the mean FB above +1,500 ml/24h was associated with an OR of 3.4 for AKI (OR 3.4; 95% CI 1.56 to 7.48). A mixed effect model demonstrated that a positive FB predicted AKI development defined by KDIGO criteria within 6 days. To assess the outcome mortality, we evaluated the mean FB during the whole ICU hospitalization. Each 100 ml increase in FB was associated to a 7% increase in the chances for death (OR 1.07; 95% CI 1.02 to 1.12). Compared to the first quartile, patients in the fourth FB quartile (FB > +1652 ml/day) showed an OR of 2.8 for death (OR 2.8; 95% CI 1.04 to 7.66). Mean FB above +1,500 ml/24h was associated with an OR of 3.8 for death, as compared to FB zero to 1,500ml/24h (OR 3.8; 95% CI 1.55 to 9.16). In conclusion, positive FB, as continuum variable, as quartiles and as absolute thresholds, was independently associated with subsequent AKI development and death in critically ill patients. In this study, the positive FB was early biomarker of AKI. These findings suggest that positive FB should be included in the criteria for AKI in addition to serum creatinine and urine output

Armazenamento de água no solo de uma cultura de soja medido por tensiômetros de polímero e estimado por diferentes métodos agrometeorológicos / Soil water storage of a soybean crop measured by polymer tensiometers and estimated by different agrometeorological methods

Schwantes, Ana Paula 18 January 2013 (has links)
The knowledge about soil water storage (ARM) is essential in agriculture mainly for crops of great agronomic importance. Polymer tensiometers are new instruments capable of measuring soil water tension in very dry soil conditions and perform measurements of soil matrix potential that can be use to calculate ARM. The aims of this study were: (i) to estimate ARM by the water balance estimation methods of Thornthwaite and Mather (M), Rijtema and Aboukhaled (R), and Cossenoidal (C), combined with crop evapotranspiration estimated by Thornthwaite, Penman and Penman-Monteith, in order to compare them with ARM values calculated from polymer tensiometer data; (ii) to estimate the water-depleted productivity of the soybean and compare it with observed data in a field experiment with a soybean crop. The experiment was conducted in Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil, with tensiometers installed at 0.05; 0.15 and 0.3 m depths, representing 0-0.1; 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.4 m soil layers. The results show that: (i) the M method underestimates the actual evapotranspiration (ETa). Consequently, it overestimates the hydric deficit and underestimates ARM because it assumes that (a) ETa is only equal to the potential evapotranspiration when ARM is equal to the available soil water storage capacity (AWC); (b) M assumes a linear increase from null ARM until ; (ii) the R and C methods provide equivalent estimates of Eta; consequently, they also present equivalent estimates of ARM and hydric deficit. However, while R assumes a linear increase of Eta from null ARM until a critic ARM, C assumes a sigmoidal variation (which agrees more with reality); (iii) the best method of evapotranspiration estimative was M. However, when only temperature data is available, it is recommended to use the Thornthwaite method; (iv) the field capacity can be determined experimentally based on the average matric potential and moisture during the rainy season; (v) for calculating water balances, AWC can be determined based on the previous determination of the permanent wilting point (water content corresponding to the matric potential of -15 atm), effective depth of the root system (soil depth whichs contributes with 95% of the evapotranspiration), with the slope equal to one; and (iii) the water-depleted productivity of the soybeans was 4279.7 kg ha-1, 55% less than the potential productivity.

Water balance for the Ji-Paraná basin (RO) using remote sensing and gis.

Victoria, Daniel de Castro 21 December 2004 (has links)
Water balance for the Ji-Paraná (RO) basin for 1995 and 1996 was done through a simple model, integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS), using as input, remote sensing images, climatic data (precipitation), soils and land cover maps. Daily AVHRR images were used to obtain mean monthly temperature composites, which were converted to monthly potential evapotranspiration, using Thornthwaite’s empirical formulation. Along with precipitation maps, derived from the interpolation of rain gages, the water balance was obtained according to Thornthwaite – Mather approach. All modeling was done inside a GIS, allowing for the results to be spatially distributed. Mean evapotranspiration for the basin is approximately 3.2 mm day-1. Maximum evapotranspiration, close to 4.2 mm day-1, occurred in October, when there is sufficient water and available energy. Minimum evapotranspiration, approximately 1.7 mm day-1, occurred at the peak of the dry season, July and August. This indicates that the model is strongly influenced by water availability. The results obtained by the model were checked against annual water balances for 10 sub-basins in the Ji-Paraná basin. Evapotranspiration was sub-estimated by aprox. 9 %. However, a better adjustment of the water holding capacity (CAD) can lead to better results.

Marinho, Ligia Borges 29 August 2011 (has links)
Palavras-chave: Capsicum frutescens; Restrição de irrigação; Estresse hídrico; Sonda de dissipação de calor / The deficit irrigation has been used as one of the most advantageous strategies for saving water, reducing costs witch irrigation and the opportunity cost of water. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of full irrigation and with deficits in two different periods in plant growth, water relations, production parameters and quality of pepper cv. Tabasco (Capsicum frutescens). As a secondary objective method to evaluate the thermal dissipation probe (SDT) in the estimation of transpiration pepper \'Tabasco\'. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Biosystems Engineering Department at the Escola Superior de Agricultura \"Luiz de Queiroz\" - ESALQ-USP, Piracicaba-SP, from September 2009 to August 2010. The experiment was conduced as randomized block design with four replications and irrigation levels of 40, 60, 80 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration (Etc), beginning 39 days after transplanting - DAT (E1) and 59 DAT (E2) . The plant height (PH), fruit length (FL), fruit diameter (FD) and the stem diameter (SD) were measured. Leaf temperature was measured upon 176 DAT, with infrared thermometer, also the pre-dawn leaf water f predawn, at 59, 96 and 110 DAT, pressure chamber was measured. The fruit number (FN), average mass fruit per plant (AMFP) and the total mass of fruits per plant were (TMFP) are quantified. The rate growth increment (RGI) and the plant stem diameter (PSD), considering the current and previous evaluation were calculated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance to test the significance of irrigation (full and restricted) differentiated in E1 and E2, and when significant, the trend was determined by regression analysis. A heat dissipation probe - HDP were installed in 29 plants 8 months old. The equation to estimate the sap flow was calibrated using a lysimeter as a standard measure in a plant. The total volume of irrigation applied ranged from 160 (E1L40) to 362 L plant-1 (L100), in a cycle of 208 days from transplanting. There was a significant deficit and full irrigation started at vegetative stage and flowering on the PH, SD, RGI, PSD, f pre-dawn, average leaf temperature, FN been the linear model that best fitted. The average fruit plant mass did not vary with deficit neither with beginning time. The deficit irrigation 40% Etc in E2 allowed savings of up to 49.8% water consumption in a cycle 208 DAT. The deficit irrigation affected the pepper production witch was not observed for the physical quality of the fruits. There is greater influence of deficit irrigation on pepper water relation when applied from the flowering stage. It can be concluded the method of HDP, adjusting the original calibration, correction of the natural thermal differences and a correct sampling in determining the area of the xylem, is effective in evaluating the transpiration of pepper Tabasco.

Modelo de simulação dinâmica para valoração ecológica de serviços ecossistêmicos hídricos nas bacias hidrográficas dos rios Piracicaba, Capivari e Jundiaí / Dynamic simulation model to valuate ecological hydrological services at Piracicaba, Capivari e Jundiaí rivers basin

Orellana Gonzalez, Alba Maria Guadalupe 16 December 2010 (has links)
The main objective of this research was to develop a dynamic simulation model to valuate ecological hydrological ecosystem services. The principles of System Dynamics were applied using the software STELLA. A basic hypothesis was adopted: ecological valuation of ecosystem services must use a tool to integer all the elements involved in ecological modeling, as a basic requirement to understand the ecosystem dynamic that generates water fluxes as hydrological ecosystems services (HES). HES are the benefits generated from complex interactions that occur within the hydrologic cycle; those interactions deals with the preservation of available water, in quantity and quality. The model was developed after a systemic analysis of the ecosystem processes involved in the hydrologic cycle; pointing out the main variables and the interrelations that constitute it. Then, the structure of those relations was represented in a causal diagram; becoming the base to built up the stocks and flows diagram. This later diagram established the mathematical model that allowed the numerical simulation. The time step of the model is one day during 365 days, estimating annual water HES. The model was parameterized at Poses sub-watershed, Extrema County, Minas Gerais. In Extrema was established the first payment for HES project in Brazil, based on the relationship between forest land and water availability. Thirty six scenarios were studied considering surface, infiltrated and stored water services fluxes; affecting the availability of water. The objective of those scenarios was to evaluate the impact that variables such as: soil texture, vegetation height, leaf area index and groundwater depth have on water flux generation. The model developed enables to increase the understanding of HES fluxes, becoming a tool with a broad spectrum of applications during the stages of assessing and scoping alternatives for payment of environmental services and to monitor HES programs in Brazil.
