The Great Depression in Weber County, Utah: an Exercise in Oral History

Taft, Mack S. 01 May 1973 (has links)
By use of oral history techniques, about fifty persons, in eleven occupations, who had lived in Weber County du1ing the Great Depression, who were interviewed concerning their life experiences during the depression. Tape recordings were made and transcriptions were taken from the tapes. These transcripts were presented to each person interviewed for approval. A signed statement granting permission to place transcripts in the Library at Utah State University and The Utah Historical Society was secured from each interviewee . From this study it became evident: 1. The memory of 1nan is not always accurate in detail information, yet has great capacity in the general area. 2. Several persons must be interviewed before a reliable conclusion can be drawn concerning an event. 3. People enjoy talking about past events in which they participated. 4. Preservation of the tape is vital in that it conveys much more than one can hope to be preserved in the written transcript; his vocal tone and change in the intensity with which he speaks reveal his special convictions and his biases. 5. The memory of past events, a most valuable historical resource , is being lost at a rapid rate through death and advanced age.

How man finds himself poorly prepared. To cope with the situation. In our schools today millions of dollars are spent teaohing art, crafts, dramatics. music, and physical education in an attempt to train for leisure, yet we spend. a comparatively little amount of money for continuing these activities in out-of-school hours.

A Comparison of Attendance Records of Handicapped and Non-Handicapped Pupils in Two Weber County Junior High Schools

Bezowski, Jewell S. 01 May 1979 (has links)
A study was done of the attendance of 1,251 non-handicapped and 131 handicapped pupils in the Weber County, Ogden, Utah School District. This study was done at the request of the district administration. The basic questions were 1) would there be a difference in attendance of the handicapped and the non-handicapped and 2) would the reasons for absence differ as stated on excuses presented to the office. Data for the entire 1978-79 school year were tallied and analyzed. There were no significant differences in the attendance rates of the two groups. Inspection of the data showed that there was a difference in attendance of handicapped pupils who were members of classes for less than 180 days and those who were 180 day class members. No reason for this difference was revealed by the data. The data on excuses presented as a reason for absence showed more absences due to doctors excuses and illness for handicapped pupils. In depth research on the causes of absence of handicapped pupils was recommended.

Klassamhället och ohälsan : en sociologisk analys av den ojämlika hälsan

Karlstein, Jenny, Ahlenius, Catrin January 2004 (has links)

The Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement : An analysis of the class divide within Australian society appertaining to globalization

Ivan, Timbs January 2006 (has links)

Global interest in using free trade agreements to expand trade, investment, integration and other linkages has expanded dramatically in the last twenty years. Australia is not alone in this development and has concluded Free Trade Agreements (FTA), with a number of countries, with little division or debate, within Australian society, about their merits. However, the announcement by the Australian Government in December 2000 of its intention to pursue an FTA with the United States ignited significant controversy in the Australian community and exposed deep concerns about the phenomenon of globalization and the future of Australian society. The ensuing debate revealed deep-seated divisions within Australian society.

Utlilizing a combination of Weber’s class-based theory and liberal ideologies (economic, welfare and radical), this research intends to analyze public submissions made to the Australian Parliament Senate Select Committee on the Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the United States (US) in an attempt to identify the reasons for the divisions within Australian society concerning the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA). It is expected the results will illuminate the challenges facing both governments and societies alike in a globalizing world and provide fruitful insights for policy makers in future trade negotiations.

Max Weber and the Moral Dimensions of Politics as a Vocation

Brassard, Geneviève 03 May 2012 (has links)
Weber’s discussion of ethics in his famous lecture (and then essay) Politics as a Vocation (1919) clearly indicates that two possible ethical stances, the ethic of conviction and the ethic of responsibility, are rooted in ‘distinct and irreconcilably opposed principles’. Throughout Politics as a Vocation, it is the ethic of responsibility that appears to be endorsed by Weber as suited for political life. Yet, Weber concludes his essay by claiming that a combined ethic is ideal for a political vocation. This makes Weber’s position regarding the ideal ethical stance for a man who has a ‘true political calling’ appear contradictory: the ethics are opposites but somehow to be combined. Commentators have mostly concluded that, for Weber, the ethic of responsibility is the ideal ethic for politics. That appears further in accord with the fact that a key concern of the speech in its historical context was to warn political students of the dangers associated with an ethic of conviction. Weber, as a realist, was especially critical of a stance that disregarded the corrupted nature of the world, which the ethic of responsibility alone seems to accept. Politicians with single-minded convictions were responsible for Germany’s political stalemate, supporting the fact that the ethic of conviction should not be deemed acceptable in politics. And yet there is much this position neglects by opting for only one of the two ethics, by concluding that only the ethic of responsibility is appropriate for political vocation. My thesis offers something different; something I admit is ambitious. What I propose is the synthesis of the opposition, of finding a way to combine the two irreconcilably opposed ethics.
