Analýza a komparace dramatizací Žabákových dobrodružství / Analysis and Comparison of Dramatizations of The Wind in the Willows

Šteidlová, Kateřina January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with an analysis and comparison of dramatizations of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, a book which ranks among the British children's classics. The paper examines to what extent the dramatizations correspond to the book, whether and why they deviate from the original text, and what consequences these changes have. The thesis focuses on four dramatizations – a play by Alan Alexander Milne called Toad of Toad Hall, Alfa Theatre production of The Wind in the Willows, a Walt Disney short animated film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and Terry Jones´s adaptation of The Wind in the Willows to a feature film. In the thesis, firstly the book and then the dramatizations are analyzed in terms of the theme and genre, characters, setting, composition and language use. Subsequently, the dramatizations are examined and compared with regards to the transformation processes – selection, condensation, substitution, amplification, and changes in composition and language. In the final chapter, I summarize my findings and draw the conclusion.

Duarte, Carina Marques January 2015 (has links)
This paper analyzes the production of Álvaro de Campos - heteronym of Fernando Pessoa - in relation to two strong lines: the poetry of Walt Whitman and the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. It seeks to prove that the poems of the second phase, the euphoric, are invested with a power to will which is manifested especially in the sensationist impetus to try everything and in the analogy between the American bard and the philosopher. Heir to the Decadentism, Campos cannot keep the vitalist and dynamistic discourse and often a depressing tone pervades his texts. On these occasions, the lyrical, rather than being marked by the will to power, assumes a decadent feature, which will predominate in the later stage. We intend to show that, despite the fatigue, boredom, lethargy and lucidity, there is in the dysphoric Campos a power to will. In order to examine the poems of the euphoric poet we will seek support in the concept of intertextuality, using the studies of Kristeva, Bakhtin, Laurent Jenny, Gérard Genette, Leyla Perrone-Moisés and Tiphaine Samoyault. With the objective of perceiving how the heteronym gives new meaning to legacy of Whitman and Nietzsche, we will follow in the analysis, the comparative methodology of search of analogies and differences. Of great value will be the approaches of George Steiner, Eduardo Lourenço and Octavio Paz, among others. In the same proportion, will be important for the understanding of the dysphoric Campos, the collocations of Nietzsche on nihilism and Steiner's arguments about the inherent sadness in thought. Warped with inflows of Nietzsche and Whitman, the will to power leads Campos, like his predecessors, to consider himself divine. However, because he is too conscious Campos cannot persist in the intoxication of Sensationism. Then, he left with expressing the will to power through the idea of the permanence of the work.

Canon and corpus: The making of American poetry / Making of American poetry

Upton, Corbett Earl, 1970- 12 1900 (has links)
viii, 233 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation argues that certain iconic poems have shaped the canon of American poetry. Not merely "canonical" in the usual sense, iconic poems enjoy a special cultural sanction and influence; they have become discourses themselves, generating our notions about American poetry. By "iconic" I mean extraordinarily famous works like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Paul Revere's Ride," Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself," and Claude McKay's "If We Must Die," that do not merely reside in the national memory but that have determined each poet's reception and thus have shaped the history of American poetry. Through case studies, I examine longstanding assumptions about these poets and the literary histories and myths surrounding their legendary texts. In carefully historicized readings of these and other iconic poems, I elucidate the pressure a single poem can exert on a poet's reputation and on American poetry broadly. I study the iconic poem in the context of the poet's corpus to demonstrate its role within the poet's oeuvre and the role assigned to it by canon makers. By tracing a poem's reception, I aim to identify the national, periodic, political, and formal boundaries these poems enforce and the distortions they create. Because iconic poems often direct and justify our inclusions and exclusions, they are of particular use in clarifying persistent obstacles to the canon reformation work of the last thirty years. While anthologies have become more inclusive in their selections and self-conscious about their ideological motives, many of the practices regarding individual poets and poems have remained unchanged over the last fifty years. Even as we include more poets in the canon, we often ironically do so by isolating a particular portion of the career, impulse in the work, or even a single poem, narrowing rather than expanding the horizon of our national literature. Through close readings situated in historical and cultural contexts, I illustrate the varying effects of iconic poems on the poet, other poems, and literary history. / The Disney International College Program (ICP) is an internship program sponsored by The Walt Disney Company, in which foreign university and college students travel to the United States, to spend their summer vocation working on the Walt Disney World Resort on Florida. The ICP has become very popular among Brazilian university students. Every year, almost thirty thousands of them apply for this program, though only about eight hundred manage to become a cast member. While on the program these youngsters develop a Disney Identity that is joined to their self. This research's goal is to explore the ICP role on the participants` life, showing its effects on these youngsters self-construction. In addition, we have aimed to investigate how ICP Alumni (people who took part of the ICP) manage to sustain their Disney identity, even after leaving the program. In order to meet our goal we have developed a qualitative case study, in which the case studied was the ICP alumni identity. Moreover, through our literature review we have acknowledged that someone’s self lays in the capacity to keep a particular narrative going on. Hence, our data was collected and analyzed through a narrative inquire method. Athwart our study, we have found out that the Walt Disney Company does an efficient job in convincing these youngsters that their mission and values are very important and thus, the ICP alumni become to praise the Disney Company and brand. We have also observed the existence of an actual Disney alumni community bonded by principles, ideas and consumption.

“Let This Be A Warning: If You Attack Israel, We Will Defend Ourselves” : Assessing defensive and offensive realism as applied upon the Israeli conduct against Iran 2007-2020

Christensson, Gustav January 2021 (has links)
In this theory testing case study the aim is to test which of the two competing theories, defensive and offensive realism, possess the greater explanatory power in regards to the Israeli action against Iran between 2007-2020, while subsequently assessing if either theory is applicable. Two competing analytical models, based around the seminal works of Kenneth Waltz, Stephen Walt, and John J. Mearsheimer, will be applied upon the Israeli actions against the Iranian nuclear program and the Israeli actions against Iran in Syria. The essay utilizes a wide array of sources, from news articles to academic papers, in order to provide a correct description of the events of study. This aim was conceptualized by posing a research question, followed by four competing hypotheses. These will, in conjunction with the analytical models, enable a comparison of the explanatory power the theories possess when applied upon the Israeli conduct against Iran. It is concluded in this paper that defensive realism possesses greater explanatory power when applied upon the Israeli conduct against Iran, compared with offensive realism.
