Hsu, Yu-ping 25 January 2008 (has links)
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was an outstanding composer in French mélodie history. He composed approximately 80 songs, and chose to set poetry of his contemporaries, notably Verlaine and Mallarmé. Discussing Debussy¡¦s two sets of Verlaine¡¦s poetry, Fêtes Galantes I and Fêtes Galantes II in the study which explored the connection between literature and painting, and the combination of the melody, harmony and poetry as a complete entity. The research includes four main parts: the biography of Claude Debussy, Debussy¡¦s mélodie style, Watteau¡¦s painting style of Fêtes Galantes, Verlains¡¦s Les Fêtes Galantes, and the analysis of Debussy¡¦s Fêtes Galantes I and II. Debussy¡¦s ability to blend of the declamatory style, variety of accompaniment patterns, and fluid harmonic structure makes his mélodie unique in the history of French songs.

Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-29T02:05:42Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 000475265-Texto+Completo-0.pdf: 16634258 bytes, checksum: 88cf78796806542f98e580b06d05ab78 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015 / The present work deals with the relationship between the artistic production of French painter Jean Antoine Watteau (1684 – 1721) and the universe of fashion. Fashion is here presented as a new perpsective to analyze Watteau’s works. The proposed study has a multidisciplinary character, which helps to adress the production of a very complex artist, whose work shows several connections and analogies to other kinds of artistic productions. During her reaearch period in Paris, the author had access to new sources and bibliography, which helped to better understand the way Watteau’s work relates not only to French fashion in the XVIIIth century, but with fashion history as a whole. The work’s mains source is a set of etchings done by different artists, called Figures de Différents Caractères; those images were based on a series of drawings originally done by Watteau. The Figures make up the two first volumes of the Recueil Julienne, a compendium of the artist’s work. Besides the etching, some oil paintings were also studied. Relationships between images produced in the XVIIIth century and images from other temporalities were taken into consideration. The researcher sook to understand the ways clothe and/or fashion impact on the constitution of the artist’s visuality; besides, the work has analysed the construction of memories pertaining clothes and clothings as shown in Watteau’s etchings and paintings; therefore, through the selected images, the researcher has explored the territory occupied by clothes and fashion in te artist’s work. Another element taken into account was the role performed by clothes in the construction of movement and gesture within the selected images. The researcher has investigated which connections can be estabilished between the selected images and the period’s social forms and dress codes. Fashion is a phenomenon characterized by speedy changes and capable of great impact on individuals. Most scholars who adressed that question have pointed the XVIIIth century as the turning point when fashion started to show those characteristics. Watteau’s artistic path has been re-traced here through some biographic data, and his insertion in French culture and society of the XVIIIth century has been investigated; the “survival” of his works in diferent times has also been pondered. The works deals extensively with Watteau’s relationship with theatre and with a genre of painting known as fêtes galantes. The relationship between the selected etchings and French fashion plates has also been examined.

Karlbom, Malin January 2023 (has links)
This artistic thesis is an attempt to reach a deeper understanding of the piano piece L'Isle joyeuse L.106, composed by Claude Debussy in 1904, with the aim of seeing how that knowledge can be put in relation to my interpretation of the music. The piece is supposedly inspired by the 18th century artist Antoine Watteau's painting Le Pèlerinage à l'île de Cythère, which depicts several couples on their way to or from the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Island of Kythera. This can be put in relation to the fact that Debussy composed the piece during a stay on the island of Jersey where he traveled with his love Emma Bardac. In the thesis I present the historical background, both about Debussy's life but also about the painting and the stylistic features in Watteau's art that I believe may have been a source of inspiration for Debussy. I also do an analysis of the piece, mostly based on my own interpretation and associations when studying the musical text, but also to some extent with the help of literature on the subject. In Watteau's painting there is an atmosphere of elegance, joy and lightness that I also find in Debussy's composition and my analysis of the piece leads to several associations linked to water, sea and happiness. The study cannot provide any concrete answers to exactly what Debussy wanted when he composed the music but it can serve as a starting point for inspiration for a pianist who plans to play the work. /
Franz Schubert - Impromptu i f-moll, Op. 142 D. 935, No. 1

Joseph Haydn - Pianosonat i Eb-dur, Hob.
