Wellness Education and Job-Related Injuries and Illnesses for Federal Employees

Scott, Eunice 01 January 2017 (has links)
Work-related injuries and illnesses may lead to absenteeism, which affects the level of productivity. The purpose of this study was to determine the success of an employee workplace training program on work-related injury and illness rates at selected federal districts within a federal organization. Newman's model, which describes internal and external factors that may have an effect on an individual's health, was the framework that guided this project. A pre-post design was used to compare data from 2 publically available data sets, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Illness and Injury and the Voice of the Employee Survey, for the years 2013 and 2014, before and after a wellness training program. According to a descriptive analysis of 91 illness and injury events that occurred during the 2-year period, the greatest number of employees who reported illnesses were mail handlers and mail processing clerks. Slips/trips and falls, strikes by machine/equipment or other objects, and repetitive motion were the top 3 types of injuries. After training, the total number of illness and injury days away from work and days of limited duty were decreased, indicating a positive impact of this workplace wellness program and a need for future training for these workers. This project has the potential to affect social change by supporting the benefits of workplace wellness in improving employee health and reducing workplace injuries at federal agencies.

Advocating Ideal Type Policy for Police Officer Wellness Based on Body Mass Index as a Predictor of Self-Reported Occupational Stress

Chiappetta, Louis 01 January 2018 (has links)
Scholars have validated both the damaging presence of police officer stress and separately, their increasing obese condition in the United States. Previous studies of police officers focus on stress or body weight, but not these variables conjointly. The purpose of this study was to inform policy creation by examining the problem of officer stress in relation to the calculated body mass index (BMI) values and to gain insight into stress outcomes. Lazarus and Folkman's stress-coping theory served as the research lens to examine if BMI would significantly contribute to the percent change of R2 variance accounted for in the predictive effect of self-reported organizational and operational stress in the past 6 months after controlling for age, gender, rank, marital status, shift work, and seniority. This quantitative research consisted of survey data that were collected from 132 volunteer officers using McCreary's Police Stress Questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis tested the predictive relationship between BMI and stress and regression model outputs illustrated no statistically significant relationship between officer stress and BMI; however, post hoc analyses found shift work to be a significant stress predictor (p = .01). Based on regression results and this body of research, social change implications include police administrators promoting policies and training which protects officers from the harmful effects of stress and BMI. Lessened stress can have a positive influence on the police and the entire public they serve.

Turismo wellness aplicado a la hotelería / Wellness Tourism applied in the Hospitality Industry

Ascención Valverde, Vania Ruth, Mendoza Naupari, Veroswa Verónica Heather 28 October 2021 (has links)
The Tourism and Hospitality industry are strongly related and in constant change with respect to their supply and trends. Wellness tourism is a recent trend that has emerged in the last few years. Some hotels are adapting to this trend, especially in Asia, where this kind of tourism is more developed, which is why they offer a variety of wellness experiences in their hotels. Many of these are related to ancient practices or the use of host-countries’ natural resources. The wellness services contribute to the personal development and integral health of the guests, but also to their emotional wellbeing. Nevertheless, the information related to this kind of tourism applied in the hospitality industry is not wide open in the Spanish language, even though countries in Latin America have plenty of resources that may serve for the development of wellness hotels. Therefore, the research analyzes and synthesizes relevant information related to this new trend such as the characteristics and activities that are carry out by hotels in relation to wellness tourism. The methodology used in this research is the literature review with an integrative approach. The main finding is that wellness tourism is an industry that is in strongly growing worldwide and focuses on the well-being of the customers with a holistic approach. / Trabajo de investigación

The economic benefits of worksite wellness programs

Lynch, Krista January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Economics / Dong Li / Comprehensive worksite wellness programs were first introduced in the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the goals of improving health, reducing health care expenditures, and demonstrating senior management’s commitment to the health and well-being of workers (Ozminkowski et al, 2002). As the annual cost of employer-sponsored family health coverage increased four percent between 2012 and 2013 (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2013), many companies are turning to worksite wellness programs. Wellness programs have shown not only to reduce health care costs, but also decrease absenteeism and increase employee satisfaction. The studies on the benefits of wellness programs are not conclusive; there seems to be a general lack of good data collection and analysis. This report discusses what determines an employer’s likelihood of offering a wellness program, what determines an employee’s participation in a wellness program, and a benefits analysis of wellness programs.

The impact of personal financial wellbeing on total employee cost / Fanus Jansen van Vuren

Jansen van Vuren, Fanus January 2015 (has links)
The present fast-changing economic environment contributes to the daily challenges faced by organisations in their attempts to maintain a competitive edge. Employees need to be innovative continuously and maintain high levels of productivity in order to reach organisational goals. From a global perspective, a lot of research has been done concerning personal financial wellbeing, yet very little research on this topic could be found in the South African context. Seeing that intellectual capital is regarded as one of the most important assets of any organisation, the current study set out to determine the impact of personal financial wellbeing on employee productivity and absenteeism as part of total employee cost. For this purpose, a confidential online questionnaire was completed voluntarily by sampled employees (n=872) from the manufacturing industry. The results showed that financial interference is an outcome of the level of financial wellbeing; therefore, financial wellbeing does have an impact on financial interference. It was also determined that financial interference, in turn, does have an impact on both productivity and absenteeism. According to the results, personal financial wellbeing also affects both productivity and absenteeism directly. One recommendation for future research is to use this study as a basis from which to more generally improve financial wellbeing in the South African context. Also, more research could be conducted on suitable financial educational programmes to improve financial wellbeing in the South African workplace, as well as on determining a monetary value of the impact of financial wellbeing on productivity and absenteeism. / MCur, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015
