Tardif, Camille 13 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)

The Dresden Central Station Square and Prager Strasse : an urban design proposal for the renewal and revitalization of this downtown distrct [sic]

Weber, Susanne Renate January 1991 (has links)
This thesis for the Master of Architecture degree focuses on urban renewal, in particular on revitalization of run down inner city neighborhoods. My chosen site is the area outside the main station in Dresden currently a wide open field with a monument of Lenin. It forms an important entry to the city center, to which it connects via the Prager StraBe, once a proud and glamorous shopping street, now a uninviting, wind-swepted pedestrian zone. This area was heavily destroyed (95°x) through Allied bombing on February 13, 1945. The reconstruction after the war disregarded the context more or less completely and was executed in a modernist town planning style which disregards of the history of the place and human scale. The analytical part deals with the existing structures, spaces and services. A catalogue of problems was established in order to be able to discuss objectives and propose strategies for possible solutions. As a result, I developed the program for the scheme. The creative project attempts to solve these problems: the urban form, the reduced density, the traffic situation, the pedestrian zone etc. and demonstrate a reasonable design solution for the area. It consists of a hotel, a convention center, a administration center, various mixed use buildings with retail at ground floor, office units above and residential penthouses. The design for the hard landscaping of the square and the soft landscaping for the public gardens helps to define the public realm. An anticipated future metro station is linked to a underground shopping arcade and to the new station concourse. / Department of Architecture

The Austrian Postwar Avant-Garde - Experimental Art on Paper and Celluloid: A Semiological Approach

Wurmitzer, Gabriele January 2012 (has links)
<p>The period following the Second World War in Austria represents a unique historical situation. On the one hand, strongly conservative and restaurative trends in politics, publications, media, and social life dominated the country - at the same time, a radically new avant-garde movement emerged. What today is collectively referred to as the Wiener Gruppe was, in the 1950s, a circle of young writers, connected by friendship and collaboration with the filmmakers Kurt Kren and Peter Kubelka. These artists created experimental works that pre-empt the concept of performance art established at a theoretical level two decades later, and anticipate the re-conceptualization of the role of the reader theorized by Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault in the 1960s. </p><p>In this dissertation, I outline the socio-political situation in Austria during the years following World War Two in Chapter One and discuss the key concepts and works which are relevant for the understanding of experimental literature and film in Chapter Two and Three. I demonstrate that the radical experimentation of postwar experimental authors and filmmakers draws attention to the materiality, visuality, and performativity of their works and establishes experimental literature and film as individual art forms: writing-as-writing and film-as-film. In conclusion, I argue that their works represent an implicit critique of language, culture, and society in the context of the "grand narratives" or the "invisible structurations" supporting a post-World War Two Austrian society.</p><p>In this dissertation, I will outline the socio-political situation in Austria during the years following World War Two in Chapter One, and discuss the key concepts which are relevant for the understanding of experimental literature in Chapter Two and Three. Nonlinear Modeling and Feedback Control of Drug Delivery in Anesthesia

Silva, Margarida M. January 2014 (has links)
General anesthesia is a drug-induced reversible state where neuromuscular blockade (NMB), hypnosis, and analgesia (jointly denoted by depth of anesthesia - DoA) are guaranteed. This thesis concerns mathematical modeling and feedback control of the effect of the muscle relaxants atracurium and rocuronium, the hypnotic propofol, and the analgesic remifentanil. It is motivated by the need to reduce incidences of awareness and overdose-related post-operative complications that occur in standard clinical practice. A major challenge for identification in closed-loop is the poor excitation provided by the feedback signal. This applies to the case of drugs administered in closed-loop. As a result, the standard models for the effect of anesthetics appear to be over-parameterized. This deteriorates the result of system identification and prevents individualized control. In the first part of the thesis, minimally parameterized models for the single-input single-output NMB and the multiple-input single-output DoA are developed, using real data. The models have a nonlinear Wiener structure: linear time-invariant dynamics cascaded with a static nonlinearity. The proposed models are shown to improve identifiability as compared to the standard ones. The second part of the thesis presents system identification methods for Wiener systems: a batch prediction error method, and two recursive techniques, one based on the extended Kalman filter, and another based on the particle filter. Algorithms are given for both the NMB and the DoA using the minimally parameterized models. Nonlinear adaptive controllers are proposed in the third part of the thesis. Using the model parameter estimates from the extended Kalman filter, the controller performs an online inversion of the Wiener nonlinearity. A pole-placement controller or a linear quadratic Gaussian controller is used for the linearized system. Results show good reference tracking performance both in simulation and in real trials. Relating to patient safety, the existence of undesirable sustained oscillations as consequence of Andronov-Hopf bifurcations for a NMB PID-controlled system is analyzed. Essentially the same bifurcations are observed in the standard and the minimally parameterized models, confirming the ability of the latter to predict the nonlinear behavior of the closed-loop system. Methods to design oscillation-free controllers are outlined.

Die Arbeitsweise Ödön von Horváths am Beispiel der <Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald>

Mueller, Ruediger H. January 1993 (has links)
By taking into account various published fragments, concepts and the final 'Volksstuck' this thesis attempts to show how the playwright Odon von Horvath developed the characters of his commercially successful 'Volksstuck' "Tales From The Vienna Woods". Chapter one of this thesis includes a brief biography of Horvath. The second chapter comprises a short history of the 'Volksstuck', Horvaths interpretation of the genre and its implications for his plays as well as a summary of the final version "'Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald.' Volksstuck in drei Teilen." The thesis further attempts to recreate a genealogy of the dramatic characters Zauberkonig, Alfred, Marianne and Oskar and to give possible reasons for their dramaturgical changes up to the development of the final version. In addition the thesis concerns itself with one example for the development of stage directions. Political as well as religious implications are considered alone and in connection with the characters.

Many existing speech enhancement techniques, especially Wiener filtering, suffer from introducing annoying musical noise and speech distortion in low SNR due to their rigid gain functions. In this work we propose a modification to the parametric Wiener filter that emphasizes the spectral contributions in spectral regions which are important for intelligibility. This is done by defining an adaptive parameter that is a function of the pitch. Objective measures and statistical tests are used to assess subjective speech quality and intelligibility. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm results in speech intelligibility improvement and in musical noise reduction, as compared to the conventional Wiener filter.

Criterios de solubilidade do problema de Dirichlet / Criteria for the solvebility of the Dirichlet problem

We will present different methods of Potential Theory developed at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century to solve the Dirichlet Problem. We start in the first chapter, with the Poincaré's Sweepping out Method, which transcended the former ones and focused the problem in a new insight. In this method, a harmonic function in a general domain is obtained, once a boundary condition is given. Then, conditions in the boundary are discussed so that this harmonic function is indeed the solution of the Dirichlet Problem. Until then, the key results were based on Dirichlet PrincipIe which admitted minimizing solutions to energy integraIs, by using some physical arguments. However, such arguments contained a few Mathematical gaps like the admission of a minimun to these integrals. Later, it appeared the Perron and Wiener Methods in the spirit of the Poincaré Method. Even in the first chapter, we discuss a predecessor of Poincaré's Method: the Schwarz's Method. The second chapter is devoted to the Integral Equations Method, where the Functional Analysis and Differential Equations walked side by side. Finally, the last chapter is a result due to Wiener that characterizes the regular points in terms of covergence of a series involving the capacity of some sets / Mestrado / Matematica - Analise- Equações Diferenciais e Parciais / Mestre em Matemática
