Previous issue date: 2017-02-09 / This study has the purpose of analyzing comparatively the play Sweet bird of youth, of 1959, by the
playwright Tennessee Williams, and the movie Sunset Boulevard, of 1950, by the filmmaker Billy
Wilder, focusing on the decadence, observing how this aspect was represented and what purpose it has
in the text and in the film. In both study objects, there are characters who were famous movie stars in
the past, but now are relegated to ostracism by Hollywood. There are male characters in the play and
the movie who want, but cannot achieve fame in the American film industry and they establish a
prostitution relationship with the actresses. These are people presented as decadent, narcissistic,
materialistic and have tragic endings. Furthermore, there are other characters and aspects of the selected
works that expose decadent facets of American society at the time, as the representation of religious
conservatism in Sweet bird of youth and the working relationship in the film Sunset Boulevard. By
analyzing the characters in the works and how they relate with each other and with the society which
surrounds them, it is possible to verify a commentary done by the authors about the negative
consequences of capitalism, of the film industry and of the conservatism in the American society.
desempenha no texto dramático e no filme.

An examination of music for trumpet and marimba and the Wilder Duo with analyses of three selected works by Gordon Stout, Paul Turok, and Alec Wilder.Foster, Christopher C. 12 1900 (has links)
This document discusses the relationship between trumpet and percussion over the past centuries, the development of music for trumpet and percussion ensembles, trumpet and percussion in twentieth-century chamber music and the creation of music for trumpet and marimba. A listing of all known trumpet and percussion duos is included. An exploration of the development of the Wilder Duo and a listing of all known trumpet and marimba duos is also included. There are analyses of works by Gordon Stout, Paul Turok and Alec Wilder. These analyses examine sound, form, harmony, melody and rhythm for each piece. Musical illustrations are included. These analyses are divided into chapters. Each chapter begins with a short biography of each composer. A short description of each work is also given. Summaries are included at the end of each analytical chapter.

"Send Forward Some Who Would Fight": How John T.Wilder and His "Lightning Brigade" of Mounted Infantry Changed WarfareMaurice, Eric 01 January 2016 (has links)
The 17th Indiana Volunteer Regiment was part of “Wilder’s Lightning Brigade”, a mounted infantry brigade under Col. John T. Wilder. Through his efforts he mounted his infantry on horseback and equipped them with Spencer Repeating Rifles. This paper argues that these changes were deliberate on the part of John T. Wilder rather than emulating others, led to a conscious and noticeable change in tactics, that these changes were effective, and examines the Brigade’s influences on future military tactics. Through the use a various Primary and Secondary sources, with heavy emphasis placed on diaries, letters, unit histories, and drill manuals, I show that the changes made were deliberate, noticed by the men and their adversaries, highly effective, and an early example of future forces like mechanized infantry.

Characterization of the hygroscopic movement in wild oats seed dispersalLindtner, Tom Michael 02 November 2023 (has links)
Seed dispersal is a crucial stage in the life cycle of plants. Different mechanisms have evolved to ensure successful germination of future generations. This includes the self-dispersal of seeds by hygroscopic movement of awns among dispersal by wind, water, or animals. Understanding the structure-function relationship is important to comprehend how plants can adapt to specific environmental conditions and also for potential development of biomimetic applications. This thesis focuses on the dispersal of wild oats (Avena sterilis) and aims to characterize the complex movement of the awns by analyzing the cell wall structure and composition that drives the motion with a range of complementary microscopic and spectroscopic methods.

Alec Wilder and the Development of the Trio for Horn, Tuba and PianoJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: This project discusses the horn, tuba, piano sub-genre of brass chamber music. Alec Wilder wrote the first piece for this instrumentation in 1963 for his friends John Barrows and Harvey Phillips. Wilder's compositional style was directly affected by life events and relationships. Through letters, biographies, recordings and autobiographies the importance of his friendship with Barrows and Phillips are displayed to show the links between the two men and the composer's compositional output. A deeper look into the life of Alec Wilder and a thematic analysis of his Suite No.1 for Horn, Tuba and Piano (1963), and Suite No.2 for Horn, Tuba and Piano (1971) shed light on the beginnings of the genre and provide a deeper understanding of the works. Since Wilder's two trios there have been at least twenty works written for this instrumentation. A brief overview of works written for the trio since 1971 provide a broad sense of the quantity and benefits of the trio in the hopes of inspiring new performances and compositions. This paper will combine the seemingly random compositions for the instrumentation into a collected repertoire. With an increase in exposure, the trio for horn, tuba and piano has the potential to become a standard brass chamber group that will benefit students, performers, and audiences alike. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2015
