Wilderness Women: Embodiment in Nature

Cordell, Tami 08 1900 (has links)
Virginia Woolf makes clear in her book A Room of One's Own that "[A] woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write…." This statement extends to all endeavors by women, including sport. The gap between men and women's sports is not bridged by monetary compensation. The domination of women exists in conceptual ideals and how those are expressed through our roles in this world. I use Val Plumwood's ecological feminist theory to expose the blatant masculinity imposed upon sport. I shall argue that sport is an arena of constant struggle over basic social conceptions of men and women. My endeavor is to implore traditionally masculine territory, and show sport as the domain of no single gender, but a field of simplicity and cooperation.

Gender Division in Sport: Through the Eyes of Female Student-Athletes at CMS

Brackmann, Kris 01 January 2017 (has links)
In this ethnography (anthropology thesis) I explored the binary gender division in modern sports culture through the analysis of stereotypes shaped by the history of women's sport, iconography of female athletes portrayed by mainstream media, and the reinforcement of stigma and pressure to conform to social norms by the normalized everyday discourse of college men and women at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. Even though Title IX brought significant gender equality to sport in terms of women's access to athletic participation and facilities, I argue that there is still much work to do to modify social attitudes toward women's sports. While CMS female student-athletes have a keen awareness of the existing gender disparity of athleticism and make criticisms of the male-dominated hegemony, they sometimes reproduce the very same disparity they are subjected to by reinforcing internalized stereotypes through articulations of female homosocial spaces, feminine ideals, and the worthy emulation of men's sports. Thus, I argue that women hold a great deal of agency to promote gender equality in sports culture through a reevaluation of the way they think and talk about traditional masculinity and femininity, athletic performance, body image, and sexuality.

Media Framing of Female Athletes and Women's Sports in Selected Sports Magazines

Nicely, Stacey 16 November 2007 (has links)
In order to determine how female athletes and women’s sports are framed in sports magazines, a textual analysis was conducted on three popular sports magazines (ESPN Magazine, Sporting News, and Sports Illustrated). The researcher analyzed the texts within these three magazines and found four emergent themes commonly applied to women in sports: mental weakness, male reference, motherhood and sisterhood, and celebrity. The research found both consistencies and inconsistencies in the thematic framing utilized among the three publications. The textual analysis also revealed a tendency for the sports media to reference individual sports more than team sports. Knowing the exact frames utilized in these magazines, allows the researcher to suggest solutions that may alleviate the negative portrayals of female athletes and women's sports in sports magazines. The results from this study also provide a foundation for those who wish to further explore and raise awareness on this issue.

Transnationalizing Title IX: Neoliberal Formations of Women’s Sport

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Transnational feminist scholars have increasingly recognized the need to interrogate the dominance of the US and the global north in transnational transactions. Chandra Mohanty argues that transnational feminist scholarship needs to “address fundamental questions of systemic power and inequities and to develop feminist, antiracist analyses of neoliberalism, militarism, and heterosexism as nation-state-building projects” (2013, p. 968). Following this call for analyzing power from feminist, anti-racist stances, this dissertation interrogates Title IX as a nationalist discourse with global reach. As a law created in the era of liberal feminism, Title IX still operates today in neoliberal times and this dissertation makes sense of Title IX as an instrument of neoliberalized feminism in transnational sporting contexts. The following three case studies focus on Title IX as it travels across nation-state borders through 21st century ideas of equity, empowerment, and opportunity. This dissertation begins by exploring at how transnational sporting policy regarding the participation standards of transgender and intersex athletes operates under the neoliberalized feminism of Title IX. It then moves to a discussion of a Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) project--Women Win’s digital storytelling project. In analyzing SDP projects, I map the cultural logics of Title IX’s neoliberalized feminism in the context of training girls and women to record their stories sport participation. Finally, the dissertation connects the context of the first Saudi female Olympians to Oiselle’s branding campaign of Sarah Attar, one of the first Saudi Olympians. It traces her image as an import-export product for the Olympic Committee and Oiselle through equity, opportunity, and empowerment. Finally, these case studies are bridged by networking the discourses of investing in a girl (commodifying girls becoming autonomous actors through education and economics) to Title IX’s focus on gender equity in order to show how these discourses simultaneously increase and negatively impact participation in sports by women from the global south. Moreover, it offers how future research in women’s transnational sports can more ethically incorporate the standpoint of women from the global south in sport policy, SDP projects, and branding campaigns. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2016

Histoire des sportives de haut niveau à Taïwan de la fin des années 1960 aux années 2010 : politique et représentations / History of women's elite sport in Taiwan from the late 1960s to the 2010s : politics and representation

Liu, Wulun 14 December 2017 (has links)
After the Second World War in 1945, Taiwan was dominated by the KMT (Kuomintang, the Chinese Nationalist Party). In the history of Taiwan's sport, Taiwanese athletes have been excluded from international sport because of political issue between two Chinas. The origins of the development of women’s sports in Taiwan can also be seen as the product of political factors, which replace the absence of male athletes in the international field in the1960s and 1970s. This research will enter the history of women’s elite sport from the first appearance of sportswomen on the world stage, which is also the period that the republican China in Taiwan loses gradually its allies and its seat in the international field. We want to discover the development of sport for women in Taiwan, and try to reveal what role they have played, how political events have influenced the development of sport and women's sport in particular, how women’s sport have influenced politics and Taiwanese society, and how these sports women are described and represented in the press

Risky Business: The Rise and Fall of WTSN and the Commercial Representation of Women's Sport in Canada

Neverson, Nicole 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to better understand the relationship between political economy, cultural policy, and the strategies employed in attempts to address representational deficits in the media. While broadly examining sport, the primary focus of this study is on WTSN (Women's Television Sports Network), the world's first 24-hour, digital television network exclusively dedicated to broadcasting women's sports. WTSN launched in the fall of 2001 and was curtailed in the fall of2003. Network executives cited low advertising revenues and audience ratings as reasons for suspending broadcasting operations. I argue that the demise and failure of WTSN (a commercial network) can be explained not only in economic terms but in ideological and gendered terms as well. Three foci illustrate the sociological implications for entrusting commercial media with the task of addressing representational deficits: 1) An analysis of the major inconsistencies in Canadian broadcast policy with regards to digital television and the promotion of culture that is informed by the opinions of media workers; 2) A content analysis of the programming produced by WTSN that contrasts findings of the representation of women's sports in previous studies; and, 3) A normative discussion of how women's sports can be used to address representational deficits in the media through a consideration of the relationship between public interest issues and those of the feminist project. Drawing from political economy and feminist theory I demonstrate how the representation of women's sports on WTSN was progressive and in stark contrast to the themes reported on in previous studies that have documented sport media. This analysis also shows how the economic imperative has been previously overlooked as an ideological factor in media representation and has therefore impeded the effective implementation of marginal voices in the Canadian sport media. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Svenska Damhockeyligan - Spelarnas varumärkesimage : En kvantitativ enkätstudie om spelarnas varumärkesimage i SDHL / A quantitative survey of players' brand image in SDHL

Granath, Filip, Granfeldt, Victor January 2021 (has links)
In Sweden, from a historical perspective, women's sports have constantly lagged behind men, both financially and organizationally. In women's sports, it is mainly individual athletes who have recently approached men on a commercial and professional level. As far as team sports are concerned, the development has lagged behind and this is evident not least in ice hockey. The differences are clear between men and women and not least financially where men at the highest elite level can support themselves through ice hockey. At the same time, the average player at the corresponding level among women needs to have a job alongside ice hockey. This is due to several factors, including that the interest in men's hockey is significantly greater, which provides more commercial opportunities. In order for women's hockey to approach the level that the men are at, an increased knowledge, an increased interest and a knowledge of supporters' opinion. In this study, the authors in collaboration with the Swedish Women's Hockey League have studied the problem area with a focus on the supporters 'perspective and how knowledge about these can serve as a basis for strengthening the players' brand image. A quantitative survey was conducted where supporters 'knowledge of players and the league is generally studied and what supporters value in players' characteristics. The study is based on previous research that has studied women's opportunities for commercial development. In the survey, the players in SDHL are regarded as brands to enable a connection to brand image and activities that are done to strengthen one. Based on previous research and models, the study is based on three key variables: individual quality, attractiveness and image. These three were indicative of empirical data collected through an online survey. The study's collected data are analyzed via descriptive statistics where diagrams and tables are reported. Finally, survey results are discussed in connection with the theories and models on which the study is based. The discussion leads to several suggestions for how SDHL can use knowledge about the supporters 'knowledge and evaluation of player characteristics in order to strengthen the players' brand image.

Fair play jako jádro sportovní etiky v obecném povědomí i z hlediska genderové diference / Fair play as the Core of Sports Ethics in General Awareness and in Terms of the Gender Gap

Holas, Josef January 2013 (has links)
Title: Fair play as the Core of Sports Ethics in General Awareness and in Terms of the Gender Gap Objectives To look at the concept of fair play from various points of view, and not only that of sports. Analysing fair play not only as appropriate behaviour in sports but also as conduct to which we ascribe a certain moral value and towards which something motivates us. To interpret the actions rewarded with the top prize of the Czech Fair Play Club. To compare the view of fair play among active athletes and people who play sports recreationally or not at all. To discover whether there is a difference in the male and female understanding of fair play - whether in terms of sports or not. Method The theoretical section is based on relevant research and consists of a conceptual analysis and comparison of texts. The practical section includes an investigation by questionnaire among 65 respondents, from active athletes, to recreational sportsmen of greater or lesser intensity, to those who hardly play sports at all. Interpretation of the answers to 15 of the questions is focused on breaking down the target group according to age, gender and their attitude towards sports. The selection of the respondents was made entirely randomly, with questionnaires sent out to people from the region of Prague and their...
