1	The Swedish Madonnas : a comparative study of wooden sculptures of the Virgin and Child between 1250 and 1350 Fried, Alexandra January 2012 (has links) This thesis provides a new overview of the wooden, sculpted image of the Madonna and Child in thirteenth - and early fourteenth - century Sweden. It comprises five parts: a socio-political and economic contextualisation of the images; a critique of the existing literature in the form of an analytical bibliography; a detailed evaluation of the sculptures; a catalogue of selected material; and a bibliography. In Chapter one, the historical examination discusses the Scandinavian context between 1250 and 1350. Scandinavia was then a thriving area, both economically and culturally, and was far less isolated and inward looking than art-historical analyses have hitherto assumed. However, Scandinavia was not a stable region in the period; borders were constantly revised as a result of political and military changes. Trade links also changed and brought with them different influences. Building on the works of Aron Andersson, Andreas Lindblom, C.R af Ugglas, Rune Norberg, Peter Tångeberg, Lena Liepe, Carina Jacobsson and Lennart Karlsson, the bibliographical critique in chapter two will analyse earlier texts that have discussed the sculptures which are the subject of this thesis. The third chapter organizes the sculptures into two main groups, and draws comparisons with international examples. It comprises a visual analysis of Swedish and international comparative material on a scale which has not been attempted before. Notamment, la recherche des collections d’art publiques et privés a bien avancé. Cependant, l’étude des œuvres médiévales a été presque toujours négligée. L’art médiéval en Argentine est rare, si on le compare avec des styles plus modernes. Mais, il s’y trouve de pièces de haute qualité qui sont très peu connues. Puisque l’étude de ces œuvres est nécessaire pour une meilleure appréciation de notre patrimoine artistique, de sa valorisation et préservation, le principal objectif de cette thèse est de contribuer à la connaissance de ce patrimoine. La grande diversité d’œuvres nous demande de définir un corpus qui deviendra notre sujet d’étude. L’iconographie de la Vierge à l’Enfant est plus représentée que d’autres thématiques, c’est pourquoi nous l’avons privilégié. Etant donné que la quantité de sculptures est supérieure à la quantité de peintures, on a opté pour cette seule technique. Finalement, dans un souci de clarté et d’homogénéité on a délimité notre champ d’étude á la sculpture en bois. Finalement, dans un souci de clarté et d’homogénéité on a délimité notre champ d’étude à la sculpture en bois. / During the last years, the building process and history of art collections became a prolific field of study in Argentina. However, research on medieval art in private and public collections in our country received little or no attention. But even if medieval art is considerably less represented than modern styles, there is an interesting amount of high quality medieval pieces exhibited at several museums in Argentina. The main purpose of this thesis is therefore to expand our knowledge of the medieval works of art in public Argentine collections, as related to their origin, dating, interpretation, technique and provenance. These pieces show great diversity of styles, provenance and technique. Such heterogeneity demanded a selection, in order to define a homogeneous corpus of study. Among the many works of medieval art in Argentine museums, the Virgin and Child iconography is the most represented subject - accordingly, that subject has been our first focus of attention. Finally, owing to the abundance of sculpture, we have decided to limit our study to this technique; and in order to give further thematic consistency to our research; we decided to circumscribe our research to woodwork sculpture. 3	Drakdräparen och dräktdelaren : En stilkritisk, ikonografisk och kontextuell studie av två medeltida träskulpturer föreställande Göran och Martin / George and Martin : A Style-critical, Iconographic and contextual study of two Medieval wooden sculptures depicting Saint George and Saint Martin of Tours Langran, Johanna January 2020 (has links) The goal undertaken in this Bachelor´s thesis was to establish, and possibly audit, the assumed motif, provenance, dating and formal style regarding two Medieval wooden sculptures depicting Saint Martin of Tours and Saint George. Both are preserved in the art collection formerly owned by one of the great Swedish artists and art collectors of the nineteenth century: Anders Zorn (1860-1920). The purpose of the study was to account for the two sculptures using the Iconographic analysis developed by Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968), and the style critical method founded by Giovanni Morelli (1816-1891). The goal was furthermore to incorporate the sculptures into a broader art historical context and discuss in what way history has impacted the usage of and attitude towards the Medieval wooden sculptures i Sweden. The result of the study concluded that the majority of what had earlier been assumed about the sculptures in regards to their respective motif, geographical orgin, style and age had been correct. Some new contributions were however made concerning similar representations, local contextualizations and the mere act of researching an object to which no major research had yet been devoted. The study also concluded that the ever changing usage of and attitude towards the Middle Ages from the Reformation during the sixteenth and seventeenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century, has likewise affected the usage of and attitude towards the medieval wooden sculptures. The consequences for the sculptures were never unequivocally positive or negative. It is a deeply personal reflection of my ideas and where they originate from, symbolsand what they speak of, materials and techniques they require.
