Lived Experience: Learning Through High School Co-Operative Education

Wainwright, Natalie 04 January 2022 (has links)
Co-operative education in which senior high school students are placed in supervised workplace settings and gain credits towards a graduation diploma is the type of work-based education offered in Ontario. The purpose of this retrospective qualitative research was to examine how students learn in co-operative education placements and to explore the environmental conditions that facilitate student learning and motivation. The conceptual framework guiding this research consisted of three theories: Billet’s (2014) theory of mimesis, Munby et al.’s (2003) theory of metacognitive routines, and Snyder’s (2000) hope theory. Three former high school students who had been in automotive co-operative education placements participated in semi-structured interviews that followed a modified version of Seidman’s (2019) three interview technique. While the findings did not support Munby et al.’s (2003) ideas about routines, they corroborated the use of mimesis as a means of workplace learning (Billet, 2014) and Snyder’s (2000) writings about work and motivation. In this study, a successful placement involved three factors: social belonging and active learning and the reciprocal relationship between them, as well as the hope that was ignited, which crystalized the academic and career goals the students set for themselves. Moreover, workplace conditions that fostered a sense of social belonging and co-workers who provided informal instruction on technical and interpersonal skills contributed the most to the participants’ learning in their co-op placements. Implications for schools and co-operative education teachers are discussed.

Leth, Mathilda January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to gain increased knowledge about how nursing students experience how learning is affected of supervision during the work-based part of the education. This was examined through three key questions including: How do nursing students experience that learning is affected of the supervision structure during work-based education? What do nursing students think a supervisor can contribute to promoting their learning during work-based education? How do nursing students handle the situation if they feel that the supervision does not contribute to increased learning during work-based education? To be able to answer these questions, the study took a qualitative approach where six semi-structured interviews were conducted with nursing students between semesters 4 and 6. The interviews were then transcribed and analysed using Illeri's theory of learning "The learning triangle".  Previous research on the topic emphasizes the importance of individual supervision as this improves the experience and learning for the student. The importance of a good relationship, time, discussion and reflection together with the supervisor is also described as important and favourable factors for students' learning. The results of my study show that nursing students feel that learning can be influenced by many factors that are linked to the supervision. What could affect learning during the work-based part of the education was the structure of supervision, certain important factors such as trust, being included, support, as well as feedback and also the interaction with the supervisor. The results also show different strategies that nursing students use when they feel that they are not satisfied with the supervision where e.g. trying to solve the problem with the supervisor or finding alternative supervisors was mentioned.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Silvia Ferreira.pdf: 1129426 bytes, checksum: a4c625ae41e530dc34b7f951981afcec (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-12-05 / The Family Health Strategy is one of the main entryways to the Unified Healthcare System (Sistema Único de Saúde – SUS) and is aimed at developing health promotion, prevention and recovery initiatives. With this, the basic care provided at the Basic Health Units should guarantee these care-based precepts for individuals residing within a specific territory, serving as a facilitator to integrate these actions and guarantee the integrity of care, through a multiprofessional team that provides care for the individual at every phase of the lifecycle. Although the physician plays an important role on this team, one of the biggest deficiencies in basic care today is this professional, especially in remote and socially vulnerable areas. In an attempt to improve this scenario, the federal government created the "Mais Médicos" Program, which recruits Brazilian and foreign physicians to work in areas with a greater need for this professional. The aim of this dissertation is to assess the influence of the foreign medical professional within the "Mais Médicos" Program on Family Health Strategy teams at a Basic Health Unit located in the district of Cachoeirinha, in the municipality of São Paulo. This study was therefore conducted to find scientific evidence on this program, using an exploratory approach, case study, a data collection technique and a semi-structured interview with family health team members, using a planned script. Data was analyzed using the content analysis technique. The related results showed that the foreign physician in the "Mais Médicos" Program had a positive influence on the health team's work process. With this, the study provides backing for managers to assess the teamwork process, causing them to show the changes and benefits in relation to the work process.
