Analysis and load Testing of a real-world cloud deployed distributed system

O'Dwyer, Robert 23 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis uses data from a real-world distributed system to develop a model for realistic load tests, and analyzes the results of several different workload scenarios on a test deployment. The research focused on characterizing the workload of the real-world Pretio system using logs captured from the production deployment, modelling a workload from those logs, and analyzing the impact on a test deployment of the system of a series of scenarios providing different parameters to the model. The results were evaluated by testing the response time distributions across multiple test runs for statistical similarity. / Graduate

Exporting food, importing food aid? : Kenya and food security in the world food system

Esamwata, Joab O. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work / Matthew R. Sanderson / Food crises in Kenya are recurring phenomena. Despite widespread and perennial famines, Kenya is exporting food while importing food aid. This study focuses on the concept and question of food security in Kenya. If Kenya can produce and even export food products, why does the country still import food aid every year? Why is the country classified as food insecure? And why does the country still suffer from recurrent famines? Drawing on social science theory from the political economy of food and agriculture, this study postulates that the contradiction between exporting food and importing food aid is related to Kenya‟s subordinate position in the world economy. Using a comparative-historical, in-depth case study research design, this research descriptively explores the relationship between trends in food aid, trade, production and food security. The study finds that the relationship between food trade and aid with food security is mixed in Kenya. Aid and trade have not strongly enhanced food security in Kenya, but food insecurity in Kenya has not gotten markedly worse.

Open Archival Information System (OAIS) as a data curation standard in the World Data Centre

Laughton, Paul Arthur 06 June 2012 (has links)
D. Litt. et Phil. / The use of data in science has evolved to a new level in e-science. Collaboration in e- science is important as scientists, engineers and technologists work together to solve scientific problems, through the collection and analysis of large data sets. These experiments can generate enormous amounts of data, creating a need for more efficient storage, management and processing of data. Data needs to be managed effectively to ensure possible future use for secondary analysis and further experimentation. The practice of data curation deals with the management of data, with the objective of sustaining data as a resource for future use. A number of frameworks and models have been developed to address the curation of data, but only the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) has been accepted internationally. The World Data Centre (WDC) is an organisation that was established to ensure access to scientific data for a number of different scientific disciplines. This organisation consists of 52 individual data centres (iWDCs) that are members of the WDC, and are responsible for the curation of scientific data. Because the data curation practices and needs of each iWDC differ, the purpose of this study is to determine to what extent it is possible to develop a framework for the curation of data in the WDC. This study used a mixed method research design through the collection of data from an online survey (quantitative data) and a multiple-case case study (qualitative data). All the iWDCs were invited to participate in the online survey, which was created to quantify OAIS functional model compatibility, sampling for the case study was conducted based on the OAIS functional model compatibility scores. v Based on the findings from this study, suggestions towards a suitable framework for the curation of data in the WDC are made. The key outcomes from this research included a quantitative OAIS functional model compatibility test and suggestions towards a suitable framework for the curation of data. The suggestions towards a suitable framework for the curation of data in the WDC should in future be tested in the newly formed World Data System (WDS) and adjustments made to create a viable framework for curating data in the WDS.

Martins, Bibiana Volkmer January 2011 (has links)
The consecration of neoliberalism as the dominant ideology in the mid-1980s was accompanied by several changes in the role of the state, especially regarding social issues, which came to be passed on to the social sector. This change has opened space for questioning whether the place of certain organizations - NGOs - which, in the years 1960/70/80, worked in Latin America as real political parties in the interests of socially vulnerable groups (CARRION; COAST, 2011). In parallel, in a context in which neoliberalism has been enshrined not only as an ideology, but as practice, changes in the urban landscape of cities have tended to increase in land values, accompanied by the expulsion of the socially and economically disadvantaged groups to the outskirts of cities. Thus, in times of preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2014, which will result in several changes in the urban landscape of Porto Alegre, this research aimed to investigate the actions of NGO Cidade - traditional defender of urban-environmental vulnerable population layers interests - in order to analyze to what extent its presence in the public sphere contributes so that the urban planning in Porto Alegre could democratically be built. For this reason, the study characterized as qualitative and exploratory, and the method used was a case study. The techniques of data collection were participant observation and document analysis. In order to analyze the data collected, which was based on content analysis, was used a theoretical Habermas's thought, in particular, the debate about the theories of the life world and the world of system (1992; 2002). As the survey results unveiled, on one side, the difficulties that the NGOs Cidade has faced to be heard in formal channels of popular participation established for the discussion related to urban issues, and, on the other hand, the complicity of state with the interests of capital. These factors have contributed to spread a model of a „city of exclusion', which, on behalf of the more valuable land, is shifting to low-income city peripheral areas. In the view of the forgoing, it is clear that the logic of Habermas about world of system is the one that prevails in the public sphere which treats urban planning in Porto Alegre. Finally, it is evident that the NGO Cidade keeps its political autonomy of action against the state and contributes to a democratic building as it focuses its work on the articulation of social movements around resistence alternatives to the exclusionary model presented by the municipal government. However, in a world that is constantly changing, where the role of the state is successively redefined, the question remains: Even when entities traditionally champions of the interests of the most vulnerable population, such as NGOs Cidade, will get his logic performance and protect the interests of those they represent?

Разработка стратегии развития экспорта товаров для регионов России в современной мировой экономике (на примере Свердловской области) : магистерская диссертация / Working out of a strategy for the development of exports of goods for the regions of Russia in the modern world economy (on the example of the Sverdlovsk region)

А., Ananina, A. A. January 2017 (has links)
The paper reviewed the existing methodological approaches to the assessment of the export business of industrial regions of Russia. On their basis, we proposed the author's methodology for researching the working-out and development of the region's commodity export strategy, which consists in a comparative analysis of the potential of the industrial regions of Russia in the system of indicators, on exports of different countries and the Sverdlovsk region, on the commodity structure of regional exports; in the context analysis of the concepts and strategies of foreign economic activity of the regions; in determining the orientation of foreign economic relations of the Sverdlovsk region; in determining the level of internationalization of the largest exporters of Sverdlovsk region and their integration into the World Economic System; in the calculation of deferred dividends. The result of this methodology is the development of analysis findings and direction to increase the attractiveness of territories and increase exports, the national share in the global value chains, incl. mechanisms, methods, ways, etc. Next, we conducted an approbation of the proposed author's methodology, based on it, developed a new strategy for the development of exports of goods in the Sverdlovsk region and showed that the existing export development strategy for Sverdlovsk region's products implies an increase in exports in the standard way, that is, through the search for new markets, increase production of intermediate goods, the creation of a single commodity by different enterprises and the maintenance of relations with already existing trading and strategic partners. The new model of the strategy is based on combining of the maximum efforts of enterprises to create a large finished product and the output with this product in a new economic space, as well as an increase in the output of goods with high added value. In addition, it is proposed to conclude not only a classical contract of sale, but also a profit sharing agreement. In other words, our strategy is based on the geo-economic approach, which implies the creation of long internationalized investment-reproduction cycles. The new approach should not just increase exports, create new finished goods, but also increase the competitiveness and investment attractiveness of the region.
