On the Perspective of Death in Yalom's Existential Psychotherapy

The research purposes of this thesis are to discuss the appropriateness of Yalom¡¦s use of the death issue in psychotherapy, and if the concept of death is different in Yalom, Heidegger and Freud. However, if we want to discuss this, we should discuss the correlation of Yalom¡¦s existential psychotherapy, Heidegger¡¦s philosophy and Freud¡¦s psychoanalysis of the unconscious. On the basis of these research purposes, the thesis will clarify these questions: 1. Is there any correlation of the death issue between Yalom¡¦s existential psychotherapy and Heidegger¡¦s ontology of being-toward-death? 2. Is there any correlation of the death issue between Yalom¡¦s existential psychotherapy and Freud¡¦s psychoanalysis of the unconscious? 3. After comparing these perspectives, this thesis will integrate the perspectives of death in Yalom¡¦s existential psychotherapy, Heidegger¡¦s ontology and Freud psychoanalysis of the unconscious to see if there is any special value in this dialogue frame. Also, what role does the death perspective play in connecting these three? This thesis hopes to better understand one of the ultimate concerns of Yalom ¡V death ¡V through the different points of view in Heidegger and Freud, and to clarify the special effectiveness and restrictions of using this concept in existential psychotherapy.

To Stay and To Change: Beginning Social Justice Educators Creating Collaborative Third Space(s)

Beginning teachers committed to social justice and emancipatory education often experience isolation and discouragement and need communities for intellectual, social, and emotional support as they learn to teach, and sustain their commitments to transformative pedagogy. This qualitative inquiry followed recent graduates who demonstrated personal commitments to a more just world through their lives and their studies and who began their first year as teachers in a variety of settings. Framed within a theory of transformational learning, third space, and Adler’s concepts of social interest and encouragement, the participants and the participant researcher co-created a virtual community to reflect upon and problematize this complex stage of their careers. Guiding this inquiry were the following questions: (a) What are the individual experiences, tensions, and perceptions expressed by social justice educators during their first year of teaching? (b) How does an online community created to develop a support network influence the experiences of these beginning educators during their initial year in the field? Data collection for this individual and multiple case study included autobiographical information, postings, interviews, and extant data from the teachers’ preservice training and the beginning of their first year. Data were inductively and iteratively analyzed. Trustworthiness was established through attention to credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability (Lincoln & Guba, 1985). Exploration of the life histories of these women indicated that justice and equity have been their ontological way of being in the world, and that commitment extended through their preservice training and into their first year of teaching. These women approached curriculum in critical ways, problematized simplistic explanations of student apathy, deconstructed the one right answer myth, and worked to democratize education, liberating both their students and themselves. The co-constructed community provided multiple venues for reflection, discussion, collaboration, and support which were used by the participants to meet their unique goals and needs. Participants resolved to continue and expand the community beyond the data collection period so as to remain inspired and focused on issues of justice. Implications for teacher education programs, school districts, and beginning social justice educators themselves were discussed. Possible questions for future research were also explored.

This essay provides an analysis of the novel When Nietzsche Wept written by Irvin D. Yalom. The novel takes place during the late eighteen hundred century in Vienna and throughout this essay I explore how Yalom has created a setting, where he has placed some of most prominent philosophers of this time in his fictional world in order to educate the reader about the birth of psychoanalysis and give an alternative version to how it emerged. I argue that Yalom manages to implement different original theories in connection to psychoanalysis to show how the ideas circulating at that point in history contributed to the development of psychoanalysis. The essay compares the original theories of Freud, Breuer and Nietzsche to those brought forward by the characters and illustrates the similarities in order to support Yalom´s alternative version. In conclusion, this essay demonstrates how Yalom has created an alternative version of the development of psychoanalysis by blending original theories with fictive events in order to show how psychoanalysis was a zeitgeist of its time and had more than one founding father.

PETR POLA : PROLEGOMENA TO PROBLEMATICS OF SOLITUDE Dissertation abstract The aim of the dissertation entitled Prolegomena to Problematics of Solitude is to introduce solitude as an existential characteristic, explore ways of its surpassing and articulate its relationship to experience of art. The issue of solitude represents for us a possible way to understand modern existence. First we examine the problem of solitude as an problem of isolated existence and formulate the question of its origin. The resolution of existential loneliness and solitude of being come to grasp the possibility of a relationship between isolation and solitude of being as sovereignty of being. Existential solitude means to effacer the relation of one who exists to oneself, which is a precondition for its existence. Finally we formulate a relationship between existential solitude and essential solitude, which is the paradigm for the experience of art especially for M. Blanchot. Deepening the problematics of existential solitude also enables to formulate the basis for discussions on the concept of subjectivity, which recently been revived.

This work is about the way we understand the concept of meaning of life. We particularly dwell upon existential analysis of American psychologist Irvin Yalom. We focus on his work as opposition to pessimism and nihilistic moods in nowadays society. In the other part of this work we have described basic concepts connected with the topic meaning of life and philosophical context with emphasis on Fridrich Nietszche's and Albert Camus's work and psychology of Viktor Frankl. The main goal of this work is to find if there is a way out in Yalom's existential analysis in confrontation with postmodern nihilism and feeling of meaningless of human life.
