From the periphery to the center: perspectives on the transformations in the relationship between culture, economics and politics in the contemporary world

Rodrigo Peronti Santiago 06 March 2018 (has links)
Establishing similarities between popular-urban cultural phenomena emerging in a world metropolis (New York), and a peripheral Brazilian metropolis (Salvador), which establishes from similar relations with the city, with the cultural industry, and with political and economic data, aims to understand cultural dynamics present in current stage production of capitalism, characterized by the guidance of culture for the production of goods. Therefore, it proposes a comparative study, in which the aesthetic content is left in parentheses, in favor of analysis of material, social and economic effects, as well as an attempt of understanding existing logic in other cultural contemporary events, in addition to performing as a contribution to reflections on possible links between Art, Culture and City.

Les trajectoires sénégalaises : Dakar - Paris - New-York : l’attrait du modèle américain d’immigration : entre imaginaire et expériences migratoires / Senegalese trajectories : Dakar - Paris - New-York : the attraction of the American model of immigration : between imaginaries and migratory experiences

Niang, Médina Ina 08 June 2015 (has links)
Migration from developing countries finds itself trapped into a European debate over control and restrictions. Meanwhile, the migrants’ experiences in their host countries, as well as their choices and aspirations, have often been overlooked in academic research. Thus, we propose to explore migration from the migrants’ perspective, along with their imaginaries, perceptions and experience of migration in two “northern” cities: Paris and New York. Our analyses will mainly dwell on a qualitative field survey based on a questionnaire in Dakar which gathered 196 respondents. We also interviewed Senegalese migrants in Paris (30 interviewees) and in New York (20 interviewees), as well as members of Senegalese associations. As revealed in our research, rather than poverty, stricto sensu, social unease appears to be the main push factor for Senegalese migrants, because the prospect of becoming successful and the possibility to climb up the social ladder are their main motivations. As for their choice of destination, the decrease of Paris’ traditional appeal is noticeable among the Senegalese would be migrants and New York has become their first choice. The Senegalese’s preference for the United States over France could be justified by better opportunities for self-fulfillment in New York than in Paris for Senegalese migrants. The American multiculturalism, although fragmented, allows them to remain within their communities and reproduce the Senegalese social life without being stigmatized, holding on to their dream to return to their homeland, despite the hardships found in the American reality.

This research is devoted to study how occurred the importation of the model of public security of the city of New York by the Military Police of Minas Gerais. The study will focus on ways of shaping and adapting the model and theories that inspired its construction in the PMMG workplace. About the theories that influenced the creation of contemporary police and its reforms, we will quote the theory of management administration and the theory of opportunities as main sources. Regarding the model to be imported, we will analyze the construction of public security policy of the NYPD, his reforms and dilemmas. We will build on the perception that a model cannot be imported and fully implemented on social, economic and cultural realities different from that of its construction. At last, we will position ourselves critically in this regard that we call the “PMMG modernizing speech".

The notion of ruin in visual representations of New York City during the Covid-19 pandemic

Chueca, José Gabriel 21 December 2020 (has links)

New York City: A Collage of Cultures

Drozin, Garth M. (Garth Matthew). 05 1900 (has links)
New York City: A Collage of Cultures is a single-movement programmatic orchestral work that features polytonality, prallelism, sound-mass, micro-tones, polychordal rhythmic ostinato, neo-impressionism, and folk themes and anthems from sundry cultures and nationalities. The simultaneity of contextual material at one point necessitates the employment of three conductors. The composition portrays America as a "melting pot" through its busiest immigration center, itself a microcosm of diverse international elements. This is achieved by the depiction of three different settings: a boat sailing from a foreign port, bound for New York Cty; New York itself in all of its awesome fury; and a capsule image of a conglomerate of turn-of-the-century emigrants and their interaction throughout the voyage.

A Study of Haitian Mormon Converts Dwelling in New York City: A Cross-Cultural Perspective in Understanding, Interpreting, and Experiencing the Mormon Subculture

Milien, Yvon 01 January 1997 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines the roles played by understanding, interpretation of practices, and experience in Mormon culture when Haitians convert to Mormonism. In relationship to their previous cultural practices, this thesis explores whether Haitian converts develop one of three types of behaviors: discard old practices, retain elements of old practices, or seek to establish a balance between former and new religious practices. In-depth interviews with twelve subjects living in New York City suggest that most active converts discarded their old cultural traditions. This study suggests that only interpretation influences developing types of behavior. However, it was not expected that most converts would fit in Mormon culture. Because of this new finding, this thesis shifted to explaining why Haitians are so readily assimilated into Mormon culture.
