Z-scan technique to evaluate thermal parameters.

Agnol, Fernando Fuzinatto Dall\' 06 March 1998 (has links)
The Z-Scan technique is the most popular one for the determination of the nonlinear index of refraction (n2) of transparent media. In this work we present a theoretical analysis and results of the reflection z-scan technique, aiming the research of thermal effects in highly absorbing materials. Extensions of the technique, such as the time resolved z-scan and the frequency resolved z-scan could be applied to measure thermal effects because they are relatively slow in the materials that we have measured (water, polystyrene and glass). From the linear and quadratic terms of the transmittance time evolution, or, from the second Fourier component of curves obtained in two frequencies, one can extract thermal parameters like: the heat capacity per unit mass and the thermal diffusion coefficient. Thermal properties are of great interest in the manufacture of pieces, and in the study of structure strains and new materials. By the theory presented here, if thermal constants are given, one can distinguish between thermal and electronic effects in samples that present both.

Propriedades ópticas de tetrâmeros de anilina em solução / Optical properties of aniline tetramers in solutions

Boni, Leonardo de 05 October 2000 (has links)
This work reports on the optical properties of aniline tetramers in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions. Absorption and emission spectra allowed a rough estimate of the energy levels of the aniline tetramers. Nonlinear optical properties were studied with the frequency resolved Z-scan technique and with the Z-scan technique with pulse trains. The former determined the thermal parameters of the solvent, while the latter characterized electronic nonlinearities associated to molecular excited states. Moreover, we could analyze the dynamics of the optical nonlinearities and verify the presence of an accumulative process related to thermal lensing.

Spécification et animation de modèles de conception de la sécurité avec Z / Specification and animation of security design models using Z

Qamar, Muhammad Nafees 02 December 2011 (has links)
Specifying security-critical software urges to develop techniques that allow early bugs detection and prevention. This is aggravated by the fact that massive cost and time are spent during product validation and verification (V&V). There exists a multitude of formal and informal techniques striving to confront the challenge of specifying and validating specifications. Our approach mainly concerns validating the security specifications by animating the formal models, which adds a new dimension to the state-of-the-art.Secure system engineering dedicated to tackle security features offers security-design models to sketch secure applications. Generally for these, Unified Modeling Language (UML) is considered a de facto standard along with a few extensions such as SecureUML and Object Constraint Language (OCL). OCL tends to add precision in design but yet it remains far from obtaining bugs free specifications. One reason to that is the inability of the OCL-based techniques to animate models before proceeding to an implementation.Combining formal languages such as Z with UML allows applying animation techniques enabling early validation of software design. The RoZ tool is capable of translating UML models into the Z specifications which further can be verified or validated. But RoZ is lacking to provide similar features for secure applications. In this thesis, we have upgraded this tool using an underlying security kernel backed up by Role Based Access Control (RBAC). Our approach not only allows validating the specifications but can animate the formal models. The animation also takes into account both the static and the dynamic aspects (i.e., session management) of RBAC-based security policies. Our unified approach and toolset involves a systematic usage and linkage of UML, SecureUML, RBAC, RoZ, Z, and the Just Another Z Animator (Jaza) tool. Using Jaza, the sort of validation we perform allows enumerating user defined scenarios to determine if the specification describes the intended reality. We emphasize on simultaneous consideration of functional and non-functional properties and consider functional models as contextual constraints over the security models. From a user viewpoint, our proposed approach can arbitrarily be composed with any functional model to examine an RBAC-based security policy.

The relevance of the study is justified due to the need of the development of researches, in the area of psychological evaluation of people who suffers from Down?s Syndrome (DS), that are backed by the use of appropriate instruments for such purpose. The thematic discussed focuses the characteristics of the affectivity of children suffering from Down?s Syndrome. Affectivity, conceptually, is considered a wide phenomenon, including several aspects such as emotions, passions, anxiety, anguish, sadness, happiness and even the pleasure sensations and pain. The general objective of the study consisted of investigating the manifestation of the affectivity in children and young with Down?s Syndrome and the parents? and educators? perception concerning the expression of the affectivity in the behavior and in the social activities. The specific objectives were: to identify the parents' perceptions about the several manifestations of indicative behaviors of affectivity; to verify in the social atmosphere, outside home, through the teachers' perception, the several forms and intensities of the expression of the affectivity; and, to make possible the use of the technique of Zulliger (Z-test) in people with Down?s Syndrome. 70 (seventy) children and young with Down?s Syndrome participated in the research, in the age group from 04 to 26 years old, which are attended by Institutions of Para?ba and of Rio Grande do Norte. The instruments used were two questionnaires, applied with the parents and teachers, and the projective technique, Z-test, applied, individually, with the children and young with Down?s Syndrome. For analysis of the data of the questionnaires, the program Trideux-Mots was used, with the intention of selecting the main outstanding words for the parents and teachers concerning the expression of the children's affectivity and young with Down?s Syndrome. For so much, it was organized a database that was processed by that program and, soon after, interpreted through the Factorial Analysis by Correspondence (AFC), looking for to clear the modalities of presented answers in an organized way, through a graph. The data of the Z-test were analyzed, taking in consideration the need to characterize the aspects of the affectivity and the elaboration of specific norms for this sample type, through normalized scores. In agreement with the data presented by Tri-deux-Mots, it was observed that in the affective behavior and in the relationship with the other, home and in the school, the children and young with Down?s Syndrome they express your affectivity through positive and negative characteristics, in the same way that any other child that doesn't have to syndrome. The Z-test made possible initial elements to work with that population, however it is necessary that grow other researches with the intention of investigating the reason of the answers they present not the specific categories that you/they are related to the affectivity, since it was well-known the diversity of affective characteristics presented by the researched group / Este trabalho apresenta os processos e os resultados de uma pesquisa acerca da afetividade em crian?as e jovens acometidos da s?ndrome de Down (SD).

Musilová, Lucie January 2007 (has links)

Measurement of non-linear optical effects through the reflection of polarized light.

Marcelo Martinelli 17 February 1998 (has links)
We present in this work a new technique that we developed for the measurements of nonlinear coefficients of the absorption (beta) and from the refractive index (n_2). The use of a polarized beam in this new technique (Reflection Z-Scan with Inclined Incidence) increases the set-up sensibility of the conventional RZ-Scan measurement in 30 times. For parallel polarization of the beam to the incidence plane, we can see an increase in the measurement sensibility as the incident light angle approaches the Brewster angle for transparent materials, or the minimum reflection angle for an absorbing material. We have measured changes in the refractive index as small as 10^{-4} in saturable absorber (Gadolinium Aluminate - GdAlO_{3}:Cr^{+3}). Such measurements would not be possible without the development of the sensitivity enhancement achieved by this technique and a high amplitude resolution on the data acquisition system, as small as 0.1%.

Investigação óptica e estrutural de lipoproteínas de baixa densidade de pacientes diabéticos com e sem periodontite / Optical and structural investigation of low-density lipoprotein of diabetic patients with and without periodontitis

Albattarni, Ghadeer 10 December 2018 (has links)
High-concentration of modified low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is one of the factors that increases the risk of heart disease. The higher concentrations of modified LDL are associated with the atherosclerosis in the bloodstream. The Z-scan (ZS) technique was used to investigate the nonlinear optical response of modified low-density lipoprotein (moLDL). The structural characteristics of moLDL were studied by dynamic light scattering. In this work, the experiments were carried out in LDL solution from 24 patients with diabetes and gingivitis (group 1) and 24 patients with diabetes and periodontitis (group 2). The experiments had been repeated after 6 months without any treatment for group 1 and with a periodontal treatment for group 2. The results show that the amplitude of Z-scan curve in group 2 is lower than that of group 1. After 6 months of periodontal treatment the amplitude is getting higher than before, then the concentration of modified LDL is reduced in the patients treated. Therefore, the cardiovascular risk for atherosclerosis is decreased after the periodontal treatment. Also, dynamic light scattering results show that there is not a significant structural change in moLDL between the two groups before and after 6 months.

Mesure du rapport des sections efficaces des bosons W et Z produits en association avec un jet dans les collisions proton-proton a √ s=7 TeV avec le detcteur ATLAS / Measurement of the ratio of the W and Z cross sections with exactly one associated jet in pp collisions at √ s=7 TeV with ATLAS

Xu, Chao 05 June 2012 (has links)
In this thesis an investigation of the ratio of the production cross section of W and Z bosons in association with one jet at LHC is performed. The cross-section ratio is measured with LHC proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 40 pb-1. The analysis is performed selecting W and Z bosons decaying in the muon channel. It is the first time the ratio of W and Z bosons production associated with one jet is measured at such a high center-of-mass energy, the measurement is the first one at the LHC. This measurement constitutes a very important test of perturbative theoretical calculations based on the advantage of the partial and full cancellations of various uncertainties. It also serves as constraining backgrounds with similar topological signatures in the search for new physics phenomena at the LHC. The measured ratio value is presented as a function of cumulative jet transverse momentum thresholds and found, within statistical precision, to agree well with perturbative LO and NLO QCD predictions.

Malnutrition and Handgrip Strength in Hospitalized and Non-Hospitalized Children 6-14 Years Old

Jensen, Kayla Camille 01 April 2016 (has links)
Malnutrition is concerning in children because it effects proper growth and development. Handgrip Strength (HGS) has been identified as a diagnostic indicator for identifying pediatric malnutrition but normal reference ranges have not yet been established; therefore, HGS can be used to identify malnutrition but not quantify the degree of malnutrition: mild, moderate, or severe. The aim of this study was to determine if HGS differed between hospitalized and non-hospitalized children and to describe the association between HGS and several parameters including height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). One hundred nine hospitalized and 110 non-hospitalized pediatric patients ages 6-14 years participated in this cross sectional, nonequivalent control group design study. Nutrition status was evaluated using BMI z scores and MUAC z scores, and HGS was evaluated within 48 hours of hospital admission or at a well-child appointment. According to BMI z scores, 24.8% of hospitalized and 18.3% of non-hospitalized participants were malnourished. Mean HGS of hospitalized participants was not significantly different from non-hospitalized participants (p=.2053). HGS was found to be associated with age, height, dominant hand, and MUAC z scores in all participants. The difference in HGS measurements was not statistically significant between hospitalized and non-hospitalized children using a one-time HGS measurement. Further research examining HGS measurements over time as well as comparing HGS measurements to the degree of malnutrition deficit in pediatrics is needed.
