In-line optical fiber interferometric refractive index sensors

Tian, Zhaobing 20 August 2008 (has links)
With many unique advantages compared to traditional sensors, optical fiber sensors have been studied and applied to many different areas. Interferometric sensors are one of the most useful sensor types due to their high sensitivities and relatively relaxed requirement on the stability of the optical source’s power level. In-line optical interferometric sensors received further attention as a result of compactness and robustness to the reference channel instability. Long period gratings (LPG) are one of the most useful components in the in-line optical fiber sensors. However, the fabrication cost is normally high due to the expensive masks and stringent photolithographic procedures. Two new sensor components, namely abrupt tapers and connector-offset attenuators, are proposed as couplers in the optical fiber to couple light from core to cladding (or reverse) to replace LPGs. Using OPTIBPM software, the coupling coefficients between core and cladding modes are calculated. For an abrupt taper, coupling mostly happens between LP01 and LP0m modes; the first ten LP0m modes account for 98% of the incident mode energy. For a connector-offset attenuator, coupling mainly happens between LP01 and LP1m modes; the first ten LP0m and first ten LP1m modes account for 92% of the incident mode energy. The relative direction of two connector-offset attenuators is found to be very important to the interference performance. Phase dependent interference (attenuation range from 1 dB to 35 dB) is observed in the simulation for the interferometers using abrupt tapers and connector-offset attenuators. Three interferometers are realized in the experiment using the abrupt tapers (Mach-Zehnder and Michelson) or the connector-offset attenuators (Michelson). Due to the interference between core and cladding modes, transmission is strongly dependent on wavelength ranging from 3 dB to 26 dB in the best implementation. Although it is difficult to make two perfect parallel connector-offset attenuators required by the Mach-Zehnder interferometers by using the fusion splicer, some evidence of constructive interference is observed in the experiment. The interferometers are tested as refractive index (RI) sensors using the maximum attenuation wavelength shift relative to the RI change. Given that the minimum resolution of optical spectrum analyzer is 10 pm, ~10-4 difference of the RI can be detected by the interferometric sensors using the abrupt tapers or the connector-offset attenuators. / Thesis (Master, Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy) -- Queen's University, 2008-08-18 15:42:59.506

Efeito da alga calcária e da monensina no controle da acidose de bovinos Nelore submetidos a mudança abrupta para dieta com elevada proporção de concentrado / Effect of calcareous algae and monensin in the control of acidosis in Nellore submitted abrupt change in diet with high concentrate

Roberta Ferreira Carvalho 08 July 2014 (has links)
Additives are used in high concentrate diets in order to prevent metabolic disorders. Calcareous algae (Lithothamnium calcareum), a natural and renewable product, may be an alternative to prevent these disorders. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of calcium sources and monensin in the control of ruminal acidosis of Nellore cattle, abruptly fed a high (92.3%) concentrate diet. Eight cannulated steers were randomly assigned to a doubled 4x4 Latin square design. The treatments were the inclusion of different sources of calcium to the basic diet, limestone or calcareous algae, with or without the presence of monensin. The inclusion of limestone, calcareous algae and monensin was, respectively, 7.1 g/kg, 7.4 g/kg and 30mg/kg DM. There was on effect of calcium source (P=0.607) and monensin (P=0.294) on feed intake and in the short chain fatty acids concentration. Treatments with calcareous algae based product resulted in greater ruminal pH mean (P=0.039), lower time rumen pH remained below 5.2 (P<0.001) and better control of blood pH (P=0.006). Treatments with the presence of monensin also resulted in lower time of rumen pH below 5.2 (P=0.023). Calcareous algae may be an alternative to be used in pH control of beef cattle fed high concentrate diets.

Efeito da monensina, da virginiamicina e dos óleos funcionais de mamona e caju em bovinos Nelore submetidos a mudança abrupta para dietas com elevado teor de concentrado / Effects of monensin, virginiamycin and functional oils of castor and cashew for Nellore bovines abruptly changed to a high concentrate diet

Ana Paula dos Santos Silva 28 August 2014 (has links)
The aim of this trial was to evaluate the use of monensin, virginiamycin, and functional oils on bovines feedlot fed without adaptation a 92% concentrate diet. Forty eight Nellore bovines, with initial body weight (322 ± 23 kg) and 20 months old, raised on pastures, were allocated in individual pens and divided in four blocks according to BW, and fed a basal diet with 92% concentrate. Treatments consisted of the inclusion of: monensin 30 mg/ kg of DM (M30), monensin 40 mg/kg of DM of MS (M40), monensin 30 mg/kg of DM plus virginiamycin 25 mg/kg of DM (MV) and functional oils of castor oil and cashew nut shell on 400 mg/kg of DM (FO). The dosage of M40 decreased to 30 mg/kg of DM after 14 days. Statistical analyses were conducted according to GLM proceedings of SAS, and repeated measures were analyzed using MIXED proceeding of SAS. Animals were fed for 120 days. The first 21 days were evaluated to determine the additives effects after the abrupt change challenge. Feed intake characteristics, blood parameters, fecal pH and fecal starch were measured. DMI was lower for MV animals and the BW was heavier for M40 and FO animals. Animals receiving M30 and MV additives had higher fecal pH (P=0.0004) than those receiving M40 and FO, but without difference in the starch amount (P=0.068). Blood parameters were not influenced by the additives (P>0.05). Animals were slaughtered after 120 days on feed and performance, feeding behavior, and carcass characteristics were evaluated. Animals receiving OF had higher DMI than animals M30 and MV, without difference (P=0.22) between OF and M40. Animals from treatments M40 and FO spent less time (min/kg DM)) eating (P=0.02) and masticating (P=0.03). There was no treatment effect (P>0.05) for meat and carcass characteristics, except for pelvic, kidney and heart fat that was heavier (P=0.006) for animals receiving OF, but without difference with M40. Feed additives had similar results among themselves on the characteristics evaluated. Apparently the absence of adaptation with the use of high energy diets did not cause any injury for animal performance probably because of the protection offered by the additives, and the use of functional oils was as efficient as antibiotics on avoiding metabolic disturbances on Nellore bovines.

Thermal Quenching of Photoluminescence in ZnO and GaN

Albarakati, Nahla 01 January 2017 (has links)
Investigation of the thermal quenching of photoluminescence (PL) in semiconductors provides valuable information on identity and characteristics of point defects in these materials, which helps to better understand and improve the properties of semiconductor materials and devices. Abrupt and tunable thermal quenching (ATQ) of PL is a relatively new phenomenon with an unusual behavior of PL. This mechanism was able to explain what a traditional model failed to explain. Usually, in traditional model used to explain “normal” quenching, the slope of PL quenching in the Arrhenius plot determines the ionization energy of the defect causing the PL band. However, in abrupt quenching when the intensity of PL decreases by several orders of magnitude within a small range of temperature, the slope in the Arrhenius plot has no relation to the ionization energy of any defect. It is not known a priori if the thermal quenching of a particular PL band is normal or abrupt and tunable. Studying new cases of unusual thermal quenching, classifying and explaining them helps to predict new cases and understand deeper the ATQ mechanism of PL thermal quenching. Very few examples of abrupt and tunable quenching of PL in semiconductors can be found in literature. The abrupt and tunable thermal quenching, reported here for the first time for high-resistivity ZnO, provides an evidence to settle the dispute concerning the energy position of the LiZn acceptor. In high-resistivity GaN samples, the common PL bands related to defects are the yellow luminescence (YL) band and a broad band in the blue spectral region (BL2). In this work, we report for the first time the observation of abrupt and tunable thermal quenching of the YL band in GaN. The activation energies for the YL and BL2 bands calculated through the new mechanism show agreement with the reported values. From this study we predict that the ATQ phenomenon is quite common for high-resistivity semiconductors.

Pressure Losses Experienced By Liquid Flow Through Pdms Microchannels With Abrupt Area Changes

Wehking, Jonathan 01 January 2008 (has links)
Given the surmounting disagreement amongst researchers in the area of liquid flow behavior at the microscale for the past thirty years, this work presents a fundamental approach to analyzing the pressure losses experienced by the laminar flow of water (Re = 7 to Re = 130) through both rectangular straight duct microchannels (of widths ranging from 50 to 130 micrometers), and microchannels with sudden expansions and contractions (with area ratios ranging from 0.4 to 1.0) all with a constant depth of 104 micrometers. The simplified Bernoulli equations for uniform, steady, incompressible, internal duct flow were used to compare flow through these microchannels to macroscale theory predictions for pressure drop. One major advantage of the channel design (and subsequent experimental set-up) was that pressure measurements could be taken locally, directly before and after the test section of interest, instead of globally which requires extensive corrections to the pressure measurements before an accurate result can be obtained. Bernoulli's equation adjusted for major head loses (using Darcy friction factors) and minor head losses (using appropriate K values) was found to predict the flow behavior within the calculated theoretical uncertainty (~12%) for all 150+ microchannels tested, except for sizes that pushed the aspect ratio limits of the manufacturing process capabilities (microchannels fabricated via soft lithography using PDMS). The analysis produced conclusive evidence that liquid flow through microchannels at these relative channel sizes and Reynolds numbers follow macroscale predictions without experiencing any of the reported anomalies expressed in other microfluidics research. This work also perfected the delicate technique required to pierce through the PDMS material and into the microchannel inlets, exit and pressure ports without damaging the microchannel. Finally, two verified explanations for why prior researchers have obtained poor agreement between macroscale theory predictions and tests at the microscale were due to the presence of bubbles in the microchannel test section (producing higher than expected pressure drops), and the occurrence of localized separation between the PDMS slabs and thus, the microchannel itself (producing lower than expected pressure drops).

Biogeochemical Cycling and Paleoenvironmental Reconstructions of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event from Western North America

Them II, Theodore Roland 02 August 2016 (has links)
The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE; ~183 million years ago) represents an interval during the Mesozoic when the emplacement of the Karoo-Ferrar Large Igneous Province (LIP) is thought to have resulted in significant environmental change. Associated with this interval was the widespread deposition of organic-rich sediments, carbon cycle and seawater chemistry changes, global warming, the development of marine anoxia, and major extinction events. The majority of studies of this event that have documented these responses have come from the Boreal and Tethyan regions of Europe, thus casting some doubt to the regional versus global significance of the event. Thus my dissertation has sought to reconstruct biogeochemical and paleoenvironmental changes across the T-OAE from a sedimentary succession that was deposited on the margins of a different ocean basin away from the well-studied European successions. Specifically, I have studied the chemostratigraphy of the Fernie Formation of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB), which was deposited on the eastern margin of the Panthalassa Ocean. The Toarcian carbon isotope excursions (CIEs) in the WCSB confirm that these features are global phenomena. I have suggested a new driver for small-scale CIEs observed during the event: the release of wetland-derived methane during progressive global warming. The osmium isotope record and numerical modeling of the osmium cycle suggests that continental weathering rates increased during the T-OAE by 230 – 540%. Rhenium abundance data also suggests that the increased geographic extent of marine anoxia during the T-OAE caused a global drawdown in the seawater rhenium inventory. Iron speciation data are used to reconstruct redox conditions within the WCSB, which suggest ferruginous conditions developed in the more distal locations at the onset of the T-OAE before returning to euxinic (anoxic and sulfidic) conditions. This is likely related to enhanced pyrite burial on a global scale, which caused the drawdown of the seawater sulfate inventory, thus limiting pyrite formation in the distal locations. The proximal setting remained euxinic across the T-OAE, and in all locations the iron speciation data suggest anoxic conditions persistent well after the interval that has been traditionally called the end of the T-OAE. / Ph. Évolution à long terme de l'écosystème estuarien de la Gironde / Long-term evolution of an estuarine ecosystem (the Gironde estuary case study)

Chaalali, Aurélie 14 June 2013 (has links)
Estuaries are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They constitute important areas for materials exchanges and play therefore a crucial part in biogeochemical cycles. Because of their location at the interface between marine and continental realms, they are also a migratory path for different fish species and in some cases, a nursery or a refuge area. These systems are submitted to many pressures, some of them being related to anthropogenic activities (e.g fisheries, maritime traffic, dredging, rising pollutions, etc.). These changes are superimposed to the intrinsic variability of these naturally complex ecosystems (characterized by a spatio-temporal variability of different environmental factors; i.e., temperature, salinity, turbidity, etc.). However, since recent years, an intensification of these alterations, being partly linked to the climatic component of Global Change, is observed. These changes, already documented, and their incidence on biological communities, constitute a challenge for the future management of estuarine ecosystems. However, due to a lack of long-term continuous time series, for now few studies on the long-term evolutions of estuarine systems have been reported. In this work, I used a unique set of data (35 years) provided by an ecological monitoring of the Gironde estuary (the model of estuary used in the study). The main objective of this thesis is to characterize the evolution of the whole system (physico-chemistry and biology) over the last three decades and to identify the forcings involved. The originality of this work comes from a global analysis of the main estuarine descriptors and from the evaluation of the relative contribution of global forcings. A study based on multivariate analyses, through an end-to-end approach, reveals two abrupt shifts in the state of the ecosystem of the Gironde estuary. These two changes appear to be linked to hydroclimatic fluctuations at a regional scale (North Atlantic basin) and also at a local scale. Some hypotheses on the possible mechanisms involved, linking the large-scale climatic alterations to the changes observed on the biological estuarine communities are discussed. A second study that uses a modeling approach based on the ecological niche concept of Hutchinson, identifies a change in the spatial (longitudinal) distribution of estuarine copepod populations in response to warming and marinisation processes. Finally, a third work focuses on an invasive copepod species: Acartia tonsa. A double modeling approach estimates both the fundamental and realized niches of the species. The results highlight the relative importance of climate changes that facilitated the colonization of the estuary by A. tonsa.

3D simulation of the Hierarchical Multi-Mode Molecular Stress Function constitutive model in an abrupt contraction flow

Olley, Peter, Gough, Timothy D., Spares, R., Coates, Philip D. 26 April 2022 (has links)
Yes / A recent development of the Molecular Stress Function constitutive model, the Hierarchical Multi-Mode Molecular Stress Function (HMMSF) model has been shown to fit a large range of rheometrical data with accuracy, for a large range of polymer melts. We develop a 3D simulation of the HMMSF model and compare it to experimental data for the flow of Lupolen 1840H LDPE through an abrupt 3D contraction flow. We believe this to be the first finite element implementation of the HMMSF model. It is shown that the model gives a striking agreement with experimental vortex opening angles, with very good agreement to full-field birefringence measurements, over a wide range of flow rates. A method to give fully-developed inlet boundary conditions is implemented (in place of using parabolic inlet boundary conditions), which gives a significantly improved match to birefringence measurements in the inlet area, and in low stress areas downstream from the inlet. Alternative constitutive model parameters are assessed following the principle that extensional rheometer data actually provides a ‘lower bound’ for peak extensional viscosity. It is shown that the model robustly maintains an accurate fit to vortex opening angle and full-field birefringence data, provided that both adjustable parameters are kept such that both shear and extensional data are well fitted.

Caracterização elétrica temporal de transistores de filmes finos de nanopartículas de óxido de zinco

Becker, Thales Exenberger January 2018 (has links)
In this work, the characteristics of thin-film transistors (TFTs) employing nanoparticulated zinc oxide (ZnO) as the active semiconductor channel layer are discussed. The growing interest in this component is associated to the development of low-cost, flexible and transparent electronic devices. The TFTs integrated with ZnO nanoparticles are presented and an extensive transient electrical characterization campaign was performed in order to evaluate how these devices behave and degrade over time. The measurement was performed for 80 samples of two different integration setups: inverted staggered and inverted coplanar. In the performed tests two main disturbances were identified, which were classified as abrupt and memory effects. From the collected data, hypothesis to model the observed typical behavior are formulated. Trapping activity, ambient interaction, dielectric dipoles, mobile charges, formed parallel-paths, oxygen vacancies and metallic ions diffusion are mechanisms that may be associated to the observed behavior.
