Organizational Knowledge Transfer : Exploring possibilities for improvements in knowledge transfer processes within R&D departments

Haglund, Kristoffer, Johnsson, Emil January 2022 (has links)
Research has established when transferring knowledge, a gap occurs between the sender and receiver due to different expertise. Research has, however, not enlightened how an organization consisting of multiple development departments ensures that individuals with different expertise have the prerequisites needed to transfer knowledge across knowledge domains. The thesis explores possibilities in knowledge transfer processes, specifically among research and development (R&D) departments where the knowledge domain differs. Furthermore, exploring how the two perspectives of spreading and absorbing knowledge can answer how departments can ensure that the knowledge generated can successfully be transferred and interpreted by the receiver. Thus, the receiver understands the critical information and how it can be applied in a specific department. The methodology used was a qualitative case study as the study has conducted together with Husqvarna Group. The data collected was established through 14 interviews with Husqvarna, which have been analyzed in relation to a theoretical framework based on knowledge transfer literature. The focus has been on the organization's research and development departments, where much knowledge is being exchanged.  This study enlightens existing shortcomings within knowledge transfer processes and situations. However, these are general and common for organizations according to theory. The study suggests that individuals and departments more actively build and nurture relations to successfully bridge the gaps that exist. Furthermore, through management, the organization needs to encourage individuals’ motivation and incentives to receive and search for new knowledge. The organization could also consider balancing the existing communication channels, leading to less seclusion and a more inclusive organization. Finally, the entire organization would benefit from considering knowledge transfer as a coherent process, not several isolated processes.

On the Problem of Arbitrary Projections onto a Reduced Discrete Set of States with Applications to Mean First Passage Time Problems

Biswas, Katja 09 December 2011 (has links)
This dissertation presents a theoretical study of arbitrary discretizations of general nonequilibrium and non-steady-state systems. It will be shown that, without requiring the partitions of the phase-space to fulfill certain assumptions, such as culminating in Markovian partitions, a Markov chain can be constructed which has the same macro-change of probability of the occupation of the states as the original process. This is true for any classical and semiclassical system under any discrete or continuous, deterministic or stochastic, Markovian or non-Markovian dynamics. Restricted to classical and semi-classical systems, a formalism is developed which treats the projection of arbitrary (multidimensional) complex systems onto a discrete set of states of an abstract state-space using time and ensemble sampled transitions between the states of the trajectories of the original process. This formalism is then used to develop expressions for the mean first passage time and (in the case of projections resulting in pseudo-one-dimensional motion) for the individual residence times of the states using just the time and ensemble sampled transition rates. The theoretical work is illustrated by several numerical examples of non-linear diffusion processes. Those include the escape over a Kramers potential and a rough energy barrier, the escape from an entropic barrier, the folding process of a toy model of a linear polymer chain and the escape over a fluctuating barrier. The latter is an example of a non- Markovian dynamics of the original process. The results for the mean first passage time and the residence times (using both physically meaningful and non-meaningful partitions of the phase-space) confirms the theory. With an accuracy restricted only by the resolution of the measurement and/or the finite sampling size, the values of the mean first passage time of the projected process agree with those of a direct measurement on the original dynamics and with any available semi-analytical solution.

Viscoelastic Interfaces Driven in Disordered Media and Applications to Friction / Interfaces viscoélastiques sous forçage en milieu aléatoire et applications à la friction

Landes, François 10 September 2014 (has links)
Many complex systems respond to a continuous input of energy by an accumulation of stress over time, interrupted by sudden energy releases called avalanches. Recently, it has been pointed out that several basic features of avalanche dynamics are induced at the microscopic level by relaxation processes, which are neglected by most models. During my thesis, I studied two well-known models of avalanche dynamics, modified minimally by the inclusion of some forms of relaxation. The first system is that of a viscoelastic interface driven in a disordered medium. In mean-field, we prove that the interface has a periodic behaviour (with a new, emerging time scale), with avalanche events that span the whole system. We compute semi-analytically the friction force acting on this surface, and find that it is compatible with classical friction experiments. In finite dimensions (2D), the mean-field system-sized events become local, and numerical simulations give qualitative and quantitative results in good agreement with several important features of real earthquakes. The second system including a minimal form of relaxation consists in a toy model of avalanches: the Directed Percolation process. In our study of a non-Markovian variant of Directed Percolation, we observed that the universality class was modified but not completely. In particular, in the non-Markov case an exponent changes of value while several scaling relations still hold. This picture of an extended universality class obtained by the addition of a non-Markovian perturbation to the dynamics provides promising prospects for our first system.

Contributions à la modélisation mathématique et à l'algorithmique parallèle pour l'optimisation d'un propagateur d'ondes élastiques en milieu anisotrope / Contributions to the mathematical modeling and to the parallel algorithmic for the optimization of an elastic wave propagator in anisotropic media

Boillot, Lionel 12 December 2014 (has links)
The most common method of Seismic Imaging is the RTM (Reverse Time Migration) which depends on wave propagation simulations in the subsurface. We focused on a 3D elastic wave propagator in anisotropic media, more precisely TTI (Tilted Transverse Isotropic). We directly worked in the Total code DIVA (Depth Imaging Velocity Analysis) which is based on a discretization by the Discontinuous Galerkin method and the Leap-Frog scheme, and developed for intensive parallel computing – HPC (High Performance Computing). We choose to especially target two contributions. Although they required very different skills, they share the same goal: to reduce the computational cost of the simulation. On one hand, classical boundary conditions like PML (Perfectly Matched Layers) are unstable in TTI media. We have proposed a formulation of a stable ABC (Absorbing Boundary Condition) in anisotropic media. The technique is based on slowness curve properties, giving to our approach an original side. On the other hand, the initial parallelism, which is based on a domain decomposition and communications by message passing through the MPI library, leads to load-imbalance and so poor parallel efficiency. We have fixed this issue by replacing the paradigm for parallelism by the use of task-based programming through runtime system. This PhD thesis have been done in the framework of the research action DIP (Depth Imaging Partnership) between the Total oil company and Inria.

Advancing the application of analytical techniques in the biological chemistry of sporopollenin : towards novel plant physiological tracers in Quaternary palynology

Bell, Benjamin January 2018 (has links)
Palynology, the study of organic microfossils, is an important tool for improving our understanding of past environments and landscapes. Palynology provides a wealth of information from which climatic and environmental conditions can be inferred. However, inferred climatic and environmental conditions are often open to interpretation. Assumptions made about past climate conditions from pollen assemblages often rely on qualitative understanding of modern-day vegetation distributions, rather than empirical relationships. Historic anthropogenic impact on the environment must also be inferred, and assessments made as to whether vegetation changes are a result of climate change or human impact. This study seeks to address some of the questions that arise through the interpretation of pollen assemblages, by establishing empirical relationships between the geochemistry of modern pollen and climate or environmental controls. It focuses on the pollen of the climatically sensitive montane conifer Cedrus atlantica, which is distributed across the mountains of Morocco and Algeria. The study investigates aspects of modern pollen geochemistry and morphology and finds a strong relationship between the stable carbon isotope composition of modern pollen and mean annual precipitation (r2 = 0.54, p <0.001) and summer precipitation (r2 = 0.63, p <0.0001). Furthermore, a stronger relationship exists with aridity measured using the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (r2 = 0.86, p <0.0001), suggesting that the stable carbon isotope composition of Cedrus atlantica pollen is influenced by environmental moisture availability. The study also finds there is an increased abundance of ultraviolet absorbing compounds (UACs) in modern Cedrus atlantica pollen with increasing summer UV-B flux. This relationship was evident with samples growing in their native range (r2 = 0.84, p <0.0001), but not with samples from outside this range (r2 = 0.00, p = 0.99), suggesting a possible genetic influence. Lastly, the study finds that grain size of Cedrus atlantica pollen is highly variable within and between samples, and we rule out climatic control on pollen grain size. These results suggest that quantitative relationships can be established between the geochemistry of Cedrus atlantica pollen and environmental and climatic influences. Stable carbon isotope analysis of fossil pollen could be used as a proxy for reconstruction of summer moisture availability, while analysis of UACs in fossil pollen could be used as a proxy for the reconstruction of summer UV-B flux. These proxies will enhance our understanding of climatic and environmental change in Northwest Africa and will complement existing palynological techniques for environmental and climate reconstruction. Probing the interactions between iron nutrition, salinity and ultraviolet-B radiation on the physiological responses of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Wong, H. M. January 2009 (has links)
When plants are exposed to multiple environmental stress factors, one form of stress can affect the response to another stress. This study used seedlings of a new cultivar of wheat(Triticum aestivum L. cv. 1862), grown under factorial combinations of two levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B)radiation, two salinity regimes and two levels of iron treatment in chelator-buffered nutrient solutions in a growth chamber. A number of morphological and physiological measurements were made. The accumulation of chlorophyll, UVabsorbing compounds and proline in shoots, as well as phytosiderophores (PSs) in root exudates were measured. Feed value measurements included crude protein, water-soluble carbohydrates, acid detergent fibre and Fe in shoots and roots. After 21 days of stress exposure, results showed that Fe deficiency and NaCl stress generally decreased plant growth and function as well as nutritive value, but increased plant biochemical protection traits such as proline accumulation (16.3 fold under salinity stress) and release of PSs (2.4 fold under Fe deficiency). Interestingly, UV-B radiation affected belowground parameters, inducing a 47% reduction in PS release, together with decreasing root DM by 9% and Fe concentration in roots by 7%. When Fe deficiency and NaCl stress were combined, the results showed a decrease in PS release by 3.5 fold compared to unstressed plants. UV-B radiation synergistically increased UV-absorbing compound levels in combination with Fe deficiency, compared to plants grown under optimal Fe levels. This stress combination also resulted in a cumulative effect by decreasing Fe concentration in shoots and roots. However, salt stress did not interact with UV-B radiation for any of the traits measured. In addition, some three-way interactions were noted, with the Fe x NaCl x UV-B stress combination slightly decreasing PS release and resulting in a cumulative effect by decreasing Fe concentration in roots. In conclusion, this study found that aboveground stress factors such as UV-B can affect important aspects of belowground plant function, and that Fe deficiency can interact with UV-B and salinity stress in modifying plant responses to either stress alone.

Dynamics of diatomic molecules in intense laser fields / Alignment, Ionization and Fragmentation of dimers / Die Dynamik zweiatomiger Moleküle in intensiven Laserfeldern

Uhlmann, Mathias 16 May 2006 (has links) (PDF)
A realistic description of ionization in intense laser fields is implemented into the Non-Adiabatic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (NA-QMD) formalism. First, the error of a finite basis expansion is considered and a new measure is proposed for time-dependent calculations. This is used to investigate systematically the influence of the used basis set in calculations on the hydrogen atom in intense laser fields. Second, absorbing boundary conditions in basis expansion are introduced via an imaginary potential into the effective one-particle Hamiltonian. It is shown that the used form of the absorber potential is valid in many-electron time-dependent density functional theory calculations, i.e. that only ionized states are affected by the absorbing potential. The absorber is then tested on reference calculations that exist for H and aligned H+2 in intense laser fields. Excellent agreement is found. Additionally, an approximative treatment of the missing electron-nuclear correlations is proposed. It is found in calculations on H+2 that a qualitative improvement of the description of nuclear dynamics results. The extension of the NA-QMD formalism is then used to investigate the alignment behavior of diatomic molecules. Recent experiments on H+2 and H2 are reviewed and explained. It is found that dynamic alignment, i.e. the laser induced rotation of the molecule, plays a central role. The alignment behavior of H+2 and H2 and its intensity dependence is investigated after that. A drastic difference between H+2 and H2 is found in NA-QMD as well as model calculations. Then, the focus is on an astonishing new effect that has been found in N2 calculations. This effect which is called "rotational destabilization" is studied on the model system H+2. Yet, it might be observable only in heavy dimers and might have already been found in an experiment on I2.

Détection itérative des séquences pseudo-aléatoires / Iterative detection of pseudo-random sequences

Bouvier des Noes, Mathieu 15 October 2015 (has links)
Pseudo-random binary sequences are very common in wireless transmission systems and ciphering mechanisms. More specifically, they are used in direct sequence spread spectrum transmission systems like UMTS or GPS, or to construct preamble sequences for synchronization and channel estimation purpose like in LTE. It is always required to synchronize the receiver with the transmitted sequence. The usual way consists in correlating the received signal with a replica of the sequence. If the correlation exceeds a predefined threshold, the synchronization is declared valid. This thesis addresses a different approach: the binary sequence is detected with a forward error correction decoding algorithm. This allows for instance to detect very long sequences. In this thesis, we show that decoding a pseudo-random sequence is a problematic of the kind ‘detect and decode'. The decoder detects the presence of the transmitted sequence and simultaneously estimates its initial state. In conventional detection theory, this corresponds to a GLRT detector that uses a decoder to estimate the unknown parameter which is the transmitted sequence. For pseudo-random sequences, the decoder implements an iterative message-passing algorithm. It uses a parity check matrix to define the decoding graph on which the algorithm applies. Each parity check equation has a weight t, corresponding to the number of variables in the equation.Parity check equations are thus an essential component of the decoder. The decoding procedure is known to be sensitive to the weight t of the parity check equations. For m-sequences, the number of parity check equations is already known. It is given by the number of codewords of weight t of the corresponding Hamming dual code. For Gold sequences, the number of parity check equations of weight t = 3 and 4 has already been evaluated by Kasami. In this thesis we provide an analytical expression for the number of parity check equations of weight t = 5 when the degree of the generator polynomial r is odd. Knowing this number is important because there is no parity check equation of weight t < 5 when r is odd. This enumeration is also used to provide an estimation of the least degree of parity check equations of weight t.We have then addressed the problem of selecting the parity check equations used by the decoder. We observed the probability of false alarm is very sensitive to this selection. It is explained by the presence or absence of absorbing sets which block the convergence of the decoder when it is fed only with noise. These sets are known to be responsible for error floor of LDPC codes. We give a method to identify these sets according to the parity check equations used by the decoder. The probability of false alarm can increase dramatically if these absorbing sets are destroyed. Then we propose an algorithm for selecting these parity check equations. It relies on the minimization of the number of cycles of length 6 and 8. Simulation show that the algorithm allows to improve significantly the probability of false alarm and the average acquisition time.Eventually, we propose 2 algorithms for the detection of the scrambling codes used in the uplink of UMTS-FDD and CDMA2000 systems. They highlights a new vulnerability of DSSS transmission systems. It is now conceivable to detect these transmission if the sequence's generator is known.

Soethe, Viviane Lilian 25 March 2004 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 VIVIANE LILIAN SOETHE.pdf: 4187786 bytes, checksum: ad2945f377ee8ffa2972dbc25afd42a0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2004-03-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Triode Magnetron Sputtering (TMS) is a system of depositing film characterized by the introduction of a third electrode, which is made up of a grounded mobile screen, located between the cathode (target) and the anode (substrate). The purpose of this screen is to capture cold electrons (at a lower energy level) of discharge. Changing its relative position to the cathode, some of the characteristics of the plasma are changed such as the ignition tension. Based on this, a study was made investigating the relationship between the current and the target voltage by changing the positioning of the screen to the target. Through this study, we could verify that, it s possible to work independently with either of above parameters of deposition. As a result of controlling these parameters, we could verify that the deposition of quality metallic films is possible, by using a TMS equipment on polymeric substrates. By choosing the suitable conditions of deposition, based on a preliminary study, a deposition of Al film on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrate was made. It was observed through this study that these films prove to be structurally whole and with few faults. The maintenance of a constant current (0,5A) fir deposition of Al films on polymeric substrates indicates that the change in voltage alters mainly the deposition energy particles, not significantly the superficial property of films. We can still observe that the rate of deposition does not alter significantly with voltage increase, what is evidenced by the little temperature increase in the samples. The Al films deposited submitted to a constant voltage (-700V) displayed a distinct superficial topography due to the current used. The current variation influence was verified notably for the final structure of the deposited film. Besides this, this parameter is directly related to the deposition rate, this being responsible for a temperature increase of the sample caused by increase of condensation heat of deposited atoms. Thus we can say that the sample temperature is more influenced by target current than by target voltage. So, we can observe that depositions made under constant current cause less aggression to polymer and to deposited film than those made under constant voltage. Through TMS, it is possible to control deposition condition and consequently the deposition rate in an accurate way. This makes this method an efficient alternative to metallic film deposition. In view of above, an application of the study of deposited film on polymers was made, altering either the current or voltage of target. Films of Al an Inconel were deposited on Mylar® , a type of PET, with the purpose of investigating film behavior concerning its attenuation characteristics of 4 incident electromagnetic energy. This application range is very wide, including aerospace equipment, radars an so on. When the rate of deposition for the condition used is known, the thickness of film can be altered by varying the time of deposition. A study was conducted of the influence of layer thickness and film material (Al or Inconel) on the characteristics of attenuation of electromagnetic wave energy. According to studies, it was observed that deposited layer thickness and film material influenced attenuating characteristics, so that Al and Inconel deposited films showed a maximum 13% attenuation. This leads us into believing that metallic films can be used with electromagnetic radiation absorbing materials, as long as ideal work thickness and its intrinsic characteristics are known.
