Understanding Our Students: A Content Analysis of Nontraditional Students’ Admissions Essays for A College of Continuing and Professional Studies

DeFusco Houtz, Kirstin 03 1900 (has links)
While the number of individuals in the United States between the ages of 25-44 with a bachelor’s degree has been increasing, so too has the number of individuals who have started college and dropped out. Higher education has numerous societal and individual benefits that are not being actualized because there are simply not enough individuals with bachelor’s degrees in this country. Nontraditional students (NTS) are entering higher education at increasing rates but at higher risk for drop-out; therefore, it is essential to learn more about this population to improve their rates of persistence. This study examines the life experiences of 35 NTS accepted to a bachelor’s degree program in a college of continuing education. This is a bounded case study of a specific group of students that utilized a content analysis of their application essays to understand their sentiments when (re)entering higher education. Themes stemming from the research questions, essay prompt, and theoretical lens were explored but allowed for others to emerge as well. Applicants shared many personal life experiences that contributed to their goals and motivations for achieving a bachelor's degree. Ambitions for earning a bachelor’s degree were spread across the personal and professional realms, including both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Most applicants had previously attended college prior to applying to CCE while two were applying to college for the first time. Twenty-one of the 35 applicants demonstrated a clear progression to self-authorship. This study has numerous implications for practice for admissions and various student support departments on campus. Through the collaboration of these offices, institutions can create a continuity of care surrounding these students and champion them to a degree. / Educational Administration

A Study of Student and Faculty Perceptions of the Academic Advising Needs of Students in Six Teachers' Colleges in Bangkok, Thailand

Vinich Getkham 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the academic advising needs of students as perceived by students and faculty advisors through faculty advising functions in the six teachers' colleges in Bangkok, Thailand. Fifteen faculty advising functions were included in a questionnaire validated by a panel of three judges. The questionnaires were distributed to students and faculty advisors in the six teachers' colleges by two selected research assistants. A total of 180 faculty advisors and 540 junior and senior teacher training students at the six teachers' colleges in Bangkok, Thailand, were selected using stratified random sampling. The usable and complete questionnaires received included 109 from faculty advisors (60.56 per cent) and 350 from students (64.81 per cent). The t-test, the Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance W, and the Spearman's Coefficient of Rank Correlation were employed to determine and compare the differences, the agreements, and the relationships of academic advising needs of students as perceived by students and faculty advisors, respectively. Analyses of the data revealed that students and faculty advisors in the six teachers' colleges in Bangkok, Thailand, perceived a mismatch between student advising needs now being fulfilled and student advising needs that should be fulfilled. Apparently, the academic advising programs in the teachers' colleges were not meeting the student needs. However, for student advising needs which should be fulfilled, both students and faculty advisors ranked personal, vocational and career, and academic areas very high. Overall, students and faculty seemed to agree on the advising needs which should be fulfilled.

thermoEⁱⁿᵗ: E-Assessments for International Students in Mechanical Engineering: Using Technical Thermodynamics as Pilot for Mathematics Oriented Subjects at the TU Dresden

Grau Turuelo, Constantino, Banos García, Oscar, Breitkopf, Cornelia 31 March 2021 (has links)
In recent years, the development of e-learning content has proved to be a very practical tool for improving existing learning options for students and workers, as e-learning can be used anytime and anywhere. At the universities, this versatility simplifies the process of reaching a larger number of students, especially those who have difficulties understanding the lecture. This is especially true in the case of foreign students, as language is an important barrier to overcome in early stages of the study. In order to improve the integration and success of foreign students at the Technical University of Dresden, the project thermoEⁱⁿᵗ (thermodynamic e-assessments for international students) aims to offer online electronic exercises in English for the fundamental subject of technical thermodynamics as a prototype for other subjects of natural sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM, in German: MINT). This contribution presents our methodology for establishing a comprehensive didactic relation of e-assessments coupled with the lecture content. The implementation of a dynamic system for a continuous year-to-year improvement through the e-learning content and the student feedback is also discussed together with the outcomes of such implementation as a starting point to the successful implementation of e-learning activities in the STEM field of study.
