Syfte: Studiens syfte är att undersöka och jämföra hur kvinnor framställs som hjältar i två samtida actionfilmer. Metod: I denna studie har vi på ett komparativ sätt analyserat två samtida actionfilmer. Vi har använt oss av av kritisk diskursanalys inspirerad av Norman Fairclough’s modell och även Van Dijks analys på mikro­ och makronivå. Dessa metoder är tillämpbara på studien då de berör ämnen som analys av text i relation till sociala och kulturella aspekter, samt hur representationer kan forma strukturer och praktiker av en social natur. Semiotik har även använts som ett verktyg i analysen av symboler och tecken i materialet. Denna metod har varit viktig i arbetet med att analysera det som inte sägs med ord i filmerna. Exempelvis symboler och annat som finns med för att skapa mening.  Resultat: Studien visar att de båda huvudkaraktärerna som undersökts och jämförts i respektive film framställs på olika vis, med det finns även en hel del likheter. I vissa aspekter är framställningen relativt stereotypisk, men en del faktorer utmanar rådande normer och visar på en utveckling i framställningen av kvinnor som hjältar.

This paper means to examine a Chinese language blockbuster in comparison to an American counterpart. The point is to examine the cultural differences and similarities in two similar stories produced in two different production environments. Two films that display both remarkable similarities and differences due to their respective cultural context of production. Here David Bordwell’s narratological schematics is applied to investigate how a Chinese film using a similar approach to Hollywood storytelling differentiates itself. In conclusion, the storytelling and plot construction are slightly less sophisticated in the Chinese film, and the reliance on computer generated imagery plays a bigger part than the physical performances usually associated with Chinese language action-cinema. The result of this study also highlight the differences in the depiction of the detective character and the analysis also raises the question of how we could attribute the cultural differences that emerges in this analysis.

<p>The subject of my thesis is what I have chosen to call the “action babe cinema” of the 21st century, essentially action-movies featuring a female heroine in the lead role. Inspired by the theories of Vladímir Propp, author of Morphology of the Folktale, I have tried to reveal the underlying structure of these films. I have chosen eleven films which form my material, and from these extracted a number of functions (which means the actions of a character), that reoccur frequently. The heroines’ transformation can be seen as a central theme of the action babe cinema, and I have divided the films into two groups depending on the course of the transformation, either from soft to hard or the other way around. One of my findings is how there seems to be a constant need to explain the hard and tough characteristics of the female action-heroine, implying that it isn’t a natural trait for a woman. The functions have been further visualised and exemplified throughout the text, and I have found that the functions tend to be repeated in a similar pattern depending on which group they belong to. I also use the functions in an extended analysis of Kill Bill vol. 1 and Kill Bill vol. 2. The application of Propp is discussed and I present my point of view on the subject. Finally I discuss the results of my study, and what binds these films together and set them apart.</p>

<p>Jag har valt att göra en undersökning om mans- och kvinnoroller i amerikanska actionfilmer från femtiotalet fram till tvåtusentalet. Främst har jag fokuserat mig på kvinnans position i dessa filmer och gjort en återkommande jämnförelse med den amerikanska hemmafrun som ett begrepp på femtiotalet. Jag har gjort en innehållsanalys på tretton stycken filmer mellan perioden 1952-2005. Dessa filmer har jag valt ut då det finns ett tydligt samspel mellan män och kvinnor i dem och att framför allt att kvinnan har en aktiv del och är betydande för historien.</p><p>Jag har i dessa analyser kommit till slutsatsen att kvinnliga karaktärer i actionfilmer fått större utrymme att spela på allt eftersom tiden går och att bilden för vad som är manligt och kvinnligt ändrats genom perioden. Men att den kvinnliga actionhjälten alltid kan spåras tillbaka till den amerikanska hemmafrun på femtiotalet.</p>

Denna undersökning berör de genuskonstruktioner som finns i skapandet av actionhjältinnor. Jag har valt att undersöka Salt (2010) Sucker Punch (2011) samt Resident Evil:Retribution (2012) Undersökningens frågeställningar är, Hur motiveras användande av våld då det utförs av kvinnliga actionhjältinnor? Vilka arketyper går att urskilja i representationerna av kvinnliga actionhjältinnors våldsutövande? Vilka symboler går att urskilja i kvinnliga actionhjältinnors utövande av våld? Min undersökning grundar sig i teorier om genus med utgångspunkt i Raewyn Connel, för att vidare knyta det samman till Stuart Halls representationsteorier samt stereotypifiering. Teoriavsnittet avslutas sedan med kvinnlig medieforskning från Liesbeth Van Zoonen samt Laura Mulvey. Min tidigare forskning grundar sig i en förklaring till hur den manlige hjälten genom tiden har representeras och vad som är representativt för denne. Den andra delen som utgör min tidigare forskning berör Rikke Schubarts forskning om genomgående arketyper som kvinnliga actionhjältinnor genom tiden blivit porträtterade som, detta för att kunna undersöka huruvida dessa även i samtiden finns kvar i skapandet av kvinnliga actionhjältinnor. I min undersökning har jag kunnat framställa att motivet till våld faller tillbaka på de representationer som finns av kvinnor respektive män, våra förutfattade meningar och stereotypa bilder om vad som är manligt och vad som är kvinnligt. Kvinnliga actionhjältinnor porträtteras även i samtida filmer i form av genomgående arketyper, och de symboler som går att urskilja i våldet är rotade i manligheten.
