Adsorpce organických látek na aktivním uhlí při úpravě vody / Adsorption of organic compounds onto activated carbon in water treatment process

Kopecká, Ivana January 2014 (has links)
The dissertation thesis focuses on the application of activated carbon for the removal of low molecular weight algal organic matter (AOM) produced by phytoplankton during drinking water treatment, as well as on the effect of AOM on adsorption of anthropogenic micropollutants contained in raw water. The results of this study have been published in international peer-reviewed journals in 4 papers and in 2 conference contributions. The efficiency of AOM removal was studied in laboratory equilibrium and kinetic experiments using different types of granular activated carbon and cellular peptides with molecular weight < 10 kDa produced by cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. It has been previously confirmed that these peptides are removed with difficulty during the conventional water treatment based on coagulation/flocculation processes and therefore, other methods need to be applied for their restriction. The effect of solution properties on peptide adsorption was assessed by the tests at different pH values and at variable ionic strengths. The negative impact of peptides on the adsorption of organic micropollutants present in raw water was simulated using competitive adsorption experiments with herbicides alachlor and...

Charakterizace a eliminace obtížně odstranitelných látek při úpravě vody / Characterisation and elimination of compounds difficult to remove during water treatment

Čermáková, Lenka January 2020 (has links)
The Ph.D. thesis deals with the characterization of algal organic matter (AOM), which is difficult to remove in water treatment, and on the basis of AOM character, various methods for its elimination, e.g. coagulation, oxidation with subsequent coagulation and adsorption onto activated carbon are assesed. Special emphasis is placed on identifying the optimal conditions of the processes and on describing the mechanisms and interactions involved. In terms of anthropogenic micropollutants, the thesis deals with the highly topical issue of the occurrence of microplastics in water. It was found that the removal efficiency of the individual AOM components varies substantially depending on the elimination method used. The identified optimum conditions of individual methods and especially the mechanisms that apply to the removal of target substances varied widely. The non-proteinaceous fraction of AOM was removed with very low efficiency (max. 25%) by conventional coagulation even under optimized conditions (pH 6.6- 7.5 for aluminium sulfate as the coagulating agent and pH 7.5-9.0 for polyaluminium chloride) and it was given by the high content of low molecular weight (LMW) substances that are difficult to coagulate. The dominant coagulation mechanism was adsorption onto aluminium hydroxide precipitates....

Vulnérabilité du procédé couplant charbon actif en poudre et ultrafiltration : vieillissement des membranes et rétention de composés organiques polaires / Vulnerability of the process coupling powdered activated carbon and ultrafiltration : Membrane aging and rejection of polar organic compounds

Chokki, Jeannette 02 April 2019 (has links)
The degradation of water resources by the presence of organic matter (OM) and micropollutants requires the implementation of robust drinking water production processes. In this context, many French municipalities such as Saint Cloud and Angers have decided to set up a powdered activated carbon adsorption process coupled to ultrafiltration (PAC/UF). PAC is used upstream of membranes to remove traces of micropollutants while UF membranes provide excellent and constant water quality over time. However, the feedback reveals a degradation of the separation performances related in particular to an aging of the membrane materials and a vulnerability of the process towards some emerging micropollutants such as polar organic compounds (PMOCs).The work carried out during this thesis aims to better understand the consequences of the chemical aging of the membranes used in these processes and to evaluate the micropollutants removal efficiency in order to propose optimization ways. More particularly it has been shown that the main cause of aging is the chlorine exposure of the membranes during washing phases modifying the properties of the materials. In fact, the numerous characterization tools used have made it possible to demonstrate a correlation between the degradation of the hydrophilic agent of the membranes and the increase in the permeability during exposure to chlorine. The study of the membrane performances revealed an alteration of the resistance to fouling towards OM for membranes exposed to chlorine. However, the results obtained to evaluate the selectivity performance of the membranes with respect to viruses have not underlined any major alterations. Adsorption tests have demonstrated the limited efficiency of PAC for PMOCs removal. Indeed, among the molecules tested, the most hydrophobic and aromatic molecules are effectively adsorbed on PAC while the more polar ones are slightly adsorbed. Finally, the use of nanofiltration or low-pressure reverse osmosis, with average rejection rates over 90%, makes them the technological solutions of choice for the removal of PMOCs.

Utvärdering av långtidstester med aktivt kol och anjonbytare för avskiljning av läkemedelsrester och PFAS från kommunalt avloppsvatten : Reningseffektivitet, kostnad och klimatpåverkan / Evaluation of long-term tests with activated carbon and anion exchange resins for removal of pharmaceuticals and PFASs from municipal wastewater : Treatment efficiency, cost and climate impact

Olsson, Sofia January 2023 (has links)
Wastewater treatment plants are an important source for the spread of pharmaceuticals to the aquatic environment. Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) have also been detected in outgoing wastewater. To reduce emissions of these micropollutants, an advanced treatment process is required.  This study aimed to evaluate advanced treatment with granular activated carbon (GAC) and anion exchange resin (AIX), using results from an ongoing pilot study at the wastewater treatment plant Kungsängsverket in Uppsala, Sweden. The pilot study consists of column tests and pilot tests in larger scale. The column tests consist of the combination of GAC (Cyclecarb 401 or Filtrasorb 400) in fixed beds, followed by AIX (Purolite 694E) in fixed or fluidized beds in different operating lines. Contact time (EBCT, Empty Bed Contact Time) was 15 minutes for GAC and 5 minutes for AIX. The pilot tests include two-stage operation of GAC with EBCT of 14 minutes per filter. At the end of this study, in the column tests, approximately 36 000 bed volumes (BV) had been treated with GAC and 98 000 to 116 000 BV with AIX. In the pilot tests, 5 000 to 10 000 BV had been treated with GAC and 8 000 to 31 000 BV with AIX. Treatment efficiency was evaluated for diclofenac, oxazepam, metoprolol, citalopram and PFOS, since these were identified as prioritized substances in a previous study. A higher reduction of oxazepam, metoprolol and citalopram were obtained using GAC compared to AIX, where Cyclecarb 401 showed the highest reduction. For diclofenac and PFOS, a higher reduction was achieved for the combination of GAC followed by AIX compared to GAC alone.  Operating cost and climate impact were evaluated for the adsorbents as well as for specific scenarios at Kungsängsverket, that includes different treatment goals for single stage and two-stage operation of GAC, and GAC followed by AIX. Treatment goals consists of an 80 percent average reduction over time of diclofenac, oxazepam, PFOS, or a combination of these. For an equivalent dose of adsorbent, the lowest operating cost and climate impact was obtained with Cyclecarb 401. The lowest operating cost for all the treatment goals was obtained with two-stage operation of GAC. For reduction of PFOS or PFOS and diclofenac, the lowest climate impact was obtained with the combination of GAC followed by AIX. For the remaining treatment goals, the lowest climate impact was obtained with two-stage operation of GAC.   In addition, a regression analysis was preformed to evaluate whether measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) or ultraviolet absorbance (UVA) could serve as a prediction method for the treatment efficiency of organic micropollutants. However, the regression analysis showed no correlation between the reduction of DOC, UVA, and diclofenac, oxazepam or PFOS.

Adsorption Of Water Contaminants Onto Kenaf Fibers

Tolar, Stephen Douglas 05 August 2006 (has links)
In this research, the adsorptive capacities of kenaf in the forms of chopped whole stalk, chopped core, and bast materials were evaluated for the removal of lead, zinc, and toluene from contaminated synthetic waste streams using traditional adsorption isotherm techniques. The effect of surface oxidation using ozone was observed with respect to the adsorption of metals. Hydraulic conductivity experiments were conducted to evaluate the head loss associated with packing a column with kenaf fibers and to determine the suitability of its use in dynamic packed column systems. B.E.T. surface areas were determined as well. Under increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, even low level organic and inorganic contamination (under 100 ppm) in surface and ground waters must be treated. This study is part of an ongoing multi-year research effort aiming to develop a kenaf-based biosorptive process to improve treatment of contaminated aqueous streams at reduced costs and technical complexity.

Preparation, modification and characterization of activated carbon derived from Macadamia nutshells and its adsorption rate and capacity for Au(CN)2- compared to commercially prepared coconut shells

Tsolele, Refiloe 09 1900 (has links)
M. Tech (Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / Activated carbons have been produced from various carbonaceous source materials including nutshells, peat, wood, coir, lignite, coal and petroleum pitch and the produced carbons have been used for adsorption of inorganic and organic compounds from numerous matrices. Activated carbons are characterized by large surface area and high degree of microporosity. The ability of activated carbon to adsorb gold from solutions, which is present in very low concentrations while loading to fairly high concentrations, has made it an attractive material for the concentration of gold from dilute solutions. Consequently, the use of activated carbons for the recovery of gold from cyanide-leached liquors has gained wide acceptance in the mining industry. However, the price of commercially prepared carbons, the time taken for them to arrive, the breakage of the carbon during transportation and the interest in utilization of various local wastes for the generation of adsorbents has led to a search of more cost effective and time friendly source for the activated carbons. The focus of this research was to conduct a study in which a comparison was conducted between untreated coconut shell derived activated carbon (CAC) and Macadamia nutshell derived activated carbon (MAC) for the adsorption of gold. These activated carbons were modified with HNO3 and H3PO4 to increase their surface adsorption properties. This was done in order to explore if these activated carbons prepared from Macadamia shells could be an attractive alternative or a complementary supplement to the coconut shell based carbons that are currently being used in the gold extraction industry. The modification of the commercially prepared Macadamia activated carbons was done with 3 different concentrations for both nitric acid and phosphoric acid. The modified activated carbons were labelled MACP20%, MACP40% and MACP60%, to signify the materials prepared from 20% (v/v) H3PO4, 40% (v/v) H3PO4 and 60% (v/v) H3PO4 , respectively . Same labelling was used for 20% (v/v) HNO3, 40% (v/v) HNO3 and 55% (v/v) HNO3 modifications to correspond to MACN20%, MACN40% and MACN55%, respectively. Also, untreated coconut shell derived activated carbon (CAC) and Macadamia nutshell derived activated carbon (MAC) were investigated for gold adsorption for comparison purposes. All the activated carbons prepared in the iii | P a g e study were characterized with Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis (EL) and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The physical properties of the activated carbons were done by determining attrition, ash content, volatile matter, and moisture content of all the activated carbons. Various parameters that affect selective adsorption such as the effect of initial concentration, time, agitation speed, interfering species, and dose of the adsorbent were investigated. Optimal parameters for gold ion adsorption were as follows: solution pH, 10; contact time, 6 h; agitation speed 150 rpm; sorbent amount 4 g and 5.5 ppm for initial concentration of gold. The observed selectivity order was not the same for all the adsorbents but the adsorption of gold was found to be mostly influenced by the presence of nickel and least influenced by copper. The MACP60% was found to be the most effective from the three concentrations investigated for the phosphoric acid modified activated carbons yet proved to have lower adsorption capabilities compared to CAC. The MACN55% was found to be the most efficient and displayed similar adsorption capabilities to those of CAC.
