A mission and five commissions: a study of some aspects of the educational work of the American Zulu Mission, 1835-1910George, Ambrose Cato January 1989 (has links)
This thesis examines the work of the American Zulu Mission in Natal from 1835 to 1910. Of the institutions controlled by this mission, the most famous was that known in the 20th Century as Adams College, named after one of the founders of the Natal work, Dr Newton Adams. Although other research work has been done on this institution and this mission in general, this thesis attempts to examine the work in the light of the mission's own view of its educational purpose and the expectations of the Colonial Government of what could be expected of missionary education. To meet this purpose particular stress was laid first on the actual development of the mission's educational institutions, especially when reports and letters assessed the aims of the developments and the ways in which these aims were being met. Secondly, the aims of missionary education were explained through five capital Colonial Government Commissions, which looked, in a number of different ways, at the current position and future of the Zulu peoples of Natal. These Commissions reported in 1846, 1852-1853, 1881-1882, 1892 and 1902. Two major findings emerge from the investigation. The first was lack of clarity, not only on the part of what the mission was trying to do, but also on what the Colonial Government expected it to do. To this absence of clarity must be added the continuous shortage of finance, the reluctance of the Zulu themselves to accept the combination of education (which they wanted) and conversion (of which they were often suspicious). In these circumstances, their slow progress of the 75 years from 1835 to 1910 becomes understandable. Had these years been the total extent of the mission' s contribution to Natal, there would be little justification for any extended investigation, or any reason behind the high prestige which the mission enjoyed. It is shown, however, that from 1902 onwards a new, more incisive and directional policy, especially on the question of education, came from the mission. This emerged particularly under the leadership of Le Roy, Principal from 1903 to 1925. The last part of this thesis assesses this new direction. The detailed investigation comes to an end at 1910 when with the creation of Union, an entirely new organisation and dispensation came into being. In the last years of Le Roy's principalship the promise of the period of 1902 to 1920 came to fruition and in the final chapter a brief summary of these developments are given

in unbounded domains of Rn for Sobolev Spaces involving high order derivatives. This
inequality is nowadays known as Adams-type inequality [1]. We study the techniques
developed in the works due to F. Sani and B. Ruf in [23] and due to N. Lam and G. Lu
in [16] which are, essentially, combinations of the Comparison Principle of Trombetti
and Vazquez for polyharmonic operators and a symmetrization argument, also known
as Schwarz Symmetrization. "With such techniques in hands", our aim is to reduce our
problem to the radial case and, as a consequence, find an upper bound for the supremum
over all functions belonging to the unit ball of Wn;mn (Rn) provided with some specific
norm, as well as the sharpness of the constant that appears in Adams inequalities. / Neste trabalho temos como objetivo apresentar uma extensão da desigualdade de AdamsTrudinger-Moser [1] em domínios ilimitados de Rn para espaços de Sobolev envolvendo
derivadas de ordem superior no caso crítico. Esta desigualdade é conhecida hoje como
desigualdade do tipo Adams [1]. Nosso estudo é baseado nas técnicas desenvolvidas
nos trabalhos devidos à F. Sani e B. Ruf em [23] e à N. Lam e G. Lu em [16], que
são, essencialmente, combinações do Princípio de Comparação de Vazquez-Trombetti
para operadores poliharmônicos e um argumento de simetrização, também conhecido
como Simetrização de Schwarz. Munidos de tais técnicas, nosso objetivo é reduzir nosso
problema ao caso radial, e como consequência, encontrar um limite superior para o
supremo sobre todas as funções pertecentes à bola unitária de Wn;mn (Rn) provido de
uma norma específica, bem como também mostrar a otimalidade da constante presente
na desigualdade do tipo Adams.

This diploma thesis .deals with a crankshaft analysis of the VW 6,0 W12 engine. The first goal is to create a CAD model from the real part, then to create a FEM model for computer simulations. With respect to a dynamic character of the loading, the crankshaft is then reduced into a MNF file for the purpose of dynamic simulations in the MBS ADAMS/Engine. The full range of working RPMs is simulated in it. Beside the crankshaft the main and pin bearings are studied too. At the last part of this thesis the durability of the crankshaft is solved.

Die Mehrkörpersimulation (MKS) kommt in immer mehr Bereichen zum Einsatz. Bis vor einigen Jahren war das Thema fast ausschließlich im Automobilbereich wichtig. Heute wird der Ansatz in fast allen Bereichen der Technik, in dem „Bewegungsabläufe“ eine Rolle spielen, eingesetzt. Im Gegensatz zur Finite Elemente (FE)-Methode, für die eine detaillierte Bauteiltopologie mit einer Vielzahl von Elementen nötig ist, können mit MKS-Systemen selbst komplexe mechanische Systeme mit einer relativ geringen Anzahl an Freiheitsgraden abgebildet werden. Das Programm Adams hat diese Entwicklung maßgeblich mit gestaltet. Neben den Erweiterungen im Bereich der Solver und anderer mathematischer Formulierungen war immer die einfache Benutzerführung, die Integration von weiteren Simulationstechnologien und auch die Entwicklung von Spezialanwendungen ein wichtiges Thema der Entwicklung.
Im Rahmen dieses Vortrages wird der Einsatz von Adams an Hand von Beispielen demonstriert. Weiterer Schwerpunkt ist die Erweiterung der Modelle durch Berücksichtigung der elastischen Materialeigenschaften einzelner Bauteile. Die Kopplung zur Lebensdauerberechnung an Hand von Beispielen schließt den Beitrag ab.

Swedish forest industry is relying on the cut-to-length method for logging and there has always been a constant quest to make it more efficient and sustainable. Reduction of forest soil damage and operator vibration dosages are crucial steps that could facilitate meeting the above stated targets. In this context Skogforsk- The Swedish Forest Research Institute has decided to explore the potential usage of caterpillar tracks on conventional wheeled forwarders. An efficient way to perform this study is to use multi body simulations to evaluate the performance of the tracked forwarder concept over different terrains. This thesis work aims to model and simulate a tracked forwarder in Adams ATV module. As part of the thesis a conventional wheeled forwarder was selected and a track unit was conceptualised to fit it. The concept was modelled and simulate with Adams ATV for various ground conditions. An effort was also made to identify the performance parameters required to improve traction, handling, and ride performance. Based on this some results were selected and studied and inferences were made. The results from the thesis work could provide a guideline on the methodology to be followed and a a deliverable is also a multi-body dynamics model for future design research. / Svensk skogsindustri jobbar efter kortvirkesmetoden för trädavverkning. Det finns en strävan efter att göra denna metod mer effektiv och samtidigt mer ekologiskt hållbar, exempelvis en minskad markpåverkan reduktion av de helkroppsvibrationer som operatören utsätts för. Motivet till detta examensarbete är att utforska möjligheten att ersätta dagens hjulbaserade skogsmaskiner med banddrivna. Det överordnade syftet för examensarbetet är att utveckla en modelleringsmetodik för dynamiska systemsimuleringar. Metoden för detta är att modellera och simulera en banddriven skotare med Adams ATV-modul och att beskriva ett rekommenderat tillvägagångssätt och möjliga resultat. Som en del av arbetet har en traditionell skotare valts och en konceptuell bandenhet har skapats och anpassats för att passa till skogsmaskinen. Konceptet modellerades och simulerades med Adams ATV för olika markunderlag. Ytterligare arbete lades på att identifiera de parametrar som är viktiga för grepp, fordonskontroll och framkomlighet. Baserat på några av resultaten valdes några för en fördjupad studie. Resultatet från examensarbetet kan ge riktlinjer för val av lämplig metodik för denna typ av prestandastudier. En konkret leverabel från projektet är också en dynamisk flerkroppsmodell, som kan utgöra en bas för fortsatta konstruktions- och prestandastudier.

Energy analysis of a hybrid forwarder / Energianalys av en hybridskotareWu, Wenqi January 2017 (has links)
This report is the result of Master of Science thesis project developed for KTH Royal Institute of Technology in collaboration with the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden (Skogforsk) for the Forestry Master Thesis School 2016. In the past few years, Adams MBD models have been created to verify the better comfortability of six-wheeled pendulum-arm-suspension compared to bogie-suspended forwarder. Based on the current achievements, this thesis would focus on discovering the energy consumption states of both types of forwarder. A study on the energy usage of a pendulum arm suspension forwarder was preformed based on existing design parameters and test data gathered by Skogforsk, providing insight about the performance of XT28 when operating on a test track. Hydraulic and mechanical models of the forwarder were built using Adams and Simulink/Matlab. These models were used for the simulation of the working process and calculation of the energy consumption. The result of this research project shows that active pendulum arm suspension forwarder saves approximately 28% of energy consumption compared to passive suspension. It is also shown that a speed increase from 0.84m/s to 1m/s increases the energy consumptio with approximately 10%. / Rapporten är resultatet av ett masterprojekt som utförts vid KTH Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan i samarbete med Skogforsk för Skogsforskningskolan 2017. Under de senaste åren har ett antal Adams-baserade MBD-modeller skapats, med syftet att undersöka och verifiera hur mycket vibrationsmiljön kan förbättras med en sexhjulig pendelarmsdämpad skotare jämfört med en traditionell bogie-maskin. Denna avhandling fokuserade på att jämföra energiförbrukningen hos båda typer av maskiner. En studie om energiförbrukningen hos en pendularmsskotare har utförts, baserat på befintliga designparametrar och provningsdata insamlade av Skogforsk, vilket gav insikt om energiprestandan hos den aktivt dämpade pendelarmsskotaren XT28 vid drift på provbana. Hydrauliska och mekaniska modeller av maskinen skapades med Adams och Matlab/Simulink. Dessa modeller användes för simulering av en idealiserad arbetsprocess och beräkning av energiförbrukningen. Resultatet av detta projekt visar att aktivt dämpad pendularmsskotare har cirka 28% lägre energiförbrukning jämfört en passivt dämpad skotare. En analys visar också att en ökad hastighet från 0,84 m/s till 1 m/s ökar energiförbrukningen med cirka 10% .

Multibody simulations of vibrations in a truck’s steering system / Flerkroppssimuleringar av vibrationer i en lastbils styrsystemDidenbäck, Marcus January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to explore if multibody simulations is a suitable method to investigate vibrations in the steering system of trucks. Vibrations in the steering system and subsequently in the steering wheel is a common issue that automotive manufacturers face. The vibration levels in the steering wheel are in some countries regulated and some vibration phenomena can even cause issues with the handling properties of the whole vehicle. Therefore being able to predict and reduce these with the help of multibody simulations would be of great value. The thesis does this by comparing the simulations to measurements. It investigates what parts can be approximated as rigid, what the effects different numerical solvers have and compares different driving scenarios. This can however be quite challenging, one reason being that the differential equations arising when performing multibody simulations of trucks are very stiff. The numerical challenges of this must be overcome while still keeping the resolution of the accelerations in the solution high enough to still be representative of reality. The thesis also explains how to mathematically model a physical system such that the numerical analysis of it can be efficient. The results show that the success of multibody simulations is very dependent on the test case. However, they also show that together with physical measurements multibody simulations can be a powerful complementary tool. The thesis also presents improvements that could be made to the model as well as certain key areas that need to be studied more in order to align the multibody simulations results with measurements. The multibody simulations software used to perform the calculations and the modelling in the report is Adams developed by Hexagon AB. / Den här rapporten syftar till att ge inblick i om flerkroppssimuleringar kan vara ett användbart verktyg för att undersöka styrsystemsvibrationer i lastbilar. Dessa vibrationer är orsaken till en mängd styrningsproblem samt att rattvibrationer har lagkrav att inte vara för stora. Att kunna förutspå och efterlikna dessa vibrationer med flerkroppssimulering skulle därmed vara till stor fördel. Detta undersöks genom att jämföra simuleringarna med mätdata. Det undersöks vilken påverkan stelkroppsapproximationer av vissa komponenter har, påverkan av olika numeriska integrationmetoder samt steglängder och även olika körningslastfall. Att genomföra flerkroppssimuleringar av lastbilar är dock inte alltid helt enkelt, på grund av differentialekvationernas styva karaktär uppstår ofta konvergensproblem. Ska man sedan använda resultaten för att undersöka styrsystemsvibrationer måste man överkomma dessa konvergensproblem men bibehålla en tillräckligt fin upplösning av resultatet för att resultatet fortfarande ska vara representativt av den fysiska lastbilens dynamiska egenskaper. Rapporten beskriver även hur man kan gå tillväga för att matematiskt modellera ett fysisk system så att det effektivt går att utföra dynamisk analys av det. Resultaten visar att flerkroppssimulering kan vara väldigt beroende på vad körfallet är, med vissa körfall där simuleringar och mätningar stämmer väl överens och andra där detta inte är fallet. På grund av detta kan det vara otillräckligt att endast använda flerkroppssimulering för att utvärdera styrsystemsvibrationer, men resultaten visar att tillsammans med mätdata kan flerkroppssimulering vara ett kraftfullt komplement. I rapporten presenteras även exempel av viktiga komponenter att ta hänsyn till för att bättre kunna simulera styrsystemsvibrationer samt områden där mer forskning har potential att förbättra flerkroppssimuleringar i hänsyn till styrsystemsvibrationer. Mjukvaran som används för att utföra flerkroppssimulering är Adams som utvecklas av Hexagon AB.

On s'intéresse dans ce travail au théorème de Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch. Grothendieck et son école en ont démontré une forme très générale dans les années 60 tout en conjecturant l'existence d'une forme encore plus générale. Nous posons une conjecture intermédiaire entre les résultats connus et les conjectures les plus générales de Grothendieck, puis nous la démontrons dans deux cas particuliers. Plus précisément on conjecture que le théorème de Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch est vrai pour un morphisme propre localement d'intersection complète entre deux schémas divisoriels d'égale caractéristique. On démontre des cas particuliers de cette conjecture, dans le cas de la caractéristique positive d'une part, dans le cas où les schémas sont supposés réguliers et tels que le polynôme $T^k-1$ y ait $k$ racines distinctes d'autre part. Le théorème de Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch étant équivalent au théorème d'Adams-Riemann-Roch modulo torsion, on démontre des résultats de type Adams-Riemann-Roch pour en déduire des résultats de type Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch.
