Rep-Index : uma abordagem abrangente e adaptável para identificar reputação acadêmica / Rep-Index : a comprehensive and adaptable approach to identify academic reputation

A tarefa de avaliar a produção científica de um pesquisador é fortemente baseada na análise de seu currículo. É o que fazem, por exemplo, as agências de fomento à pesquisa e desenvolvimento ou comissões de avaliação, quando necessitam considerar a produção científica dos pesquisadores no processo de concessão de bolsas e auxílios, na seleção de consultores e membros de comitês, na aprovação de projetos ou simplesmente para avaliar o conceito de um programa de pós-graduação. Nesse contexto, a modelagem de perfis de pesquisadores é tarefa fundamental, especialmente quando se quer avaliar a reputação dos pesquisadores. Isto pode ocorrer por meio de um processo de análise da trajetória de toda a carreira científica do pesquisador. Tal processo envolve não somente aspectos relacionados a artigos ou livros publicados, mas também por outros elementos inerentes à atividade de um pesquisador, como orientações de trabalhos de mestrado e de doutorado; participação em defesas de mestrado e de doutorado; trabalhos apresentados em conferências; participação em projetos de pesquisa, inserção internacional, dentre outros. O objetivo deste trabalho é especificar um modelo de perfil de pesquisadores (Rep- Model) e uma métrica para medir reputação acadêmica (Rep-Index). O processo de modelagem do perfil envolve a definição de quais informações são relevantes para a especificação do perfil e as apresenta por meio de 18 elementos e 5 categorias. O processo para medir a reputação do pesquisador é definido por uma métrica que gera um índice. Esse índice é calculado mediante a utilização dos elementos constantes no perfil do pesquisador. Para avaliar a abordagem proposta na tese, diversos experimentos foram realizados. Os experimentos envolveram a avaliação dos elementos do Rep-Model por meio de análise de correlação e por algoritmos de mineração de dados. O Rep-Index também foi avaliado e correlacionado com duas métricas amplamente utilizadas na comunidade científica, o h-index e o g-index. Como baseline, foram utilizados todos os pesquisadores do CNPq das áreas de Ciência da Computação, Economia e Odontologia. O trabalho desenvolvido nesta tese está inserido no contexto da identificação da reputação de pesquisadores no âmbito acadêmico. A abordagem desta tese tem como premissa ser abrangente e adaptável, pois envolve a vida científica do pesquisador construída ao longo de sua carreira científica e pode ser utilizada em diferentes áreas e em diferentes contextos. / The task of evaluating the scientific production of a researcher is based strongly on the analysis of their curriculum. It's what makes the agencies for research support or evaluation committees, when they need to consider the scientific production of researchers in the process of awarding grants and aid in the selection of consultants and committee members in approving projects or simply to assess the concept of a program graduate. In that context, the modeling of profiles of researchers is fundamental task especially when one wants to evaluate the reputation of the researchers. This can occur by means of a process of analysis of the trajectory of all the scientific career of the researcher. Such process involves not only aspects related to papers or books, but also other elements inherent in the activity of a researcher, as orientations of master’s degree and doctorate; participation in defense of master's and doctoral degrees; papers presented in conferences, participation in research projects, international integration, among others. This proposal specifies a profile template for researchers (Rep-Model) and a metric to measure academic reputation (Rep-Index). The profile modeling process involves define which information is relevant to the specification of the profile and shows through 18 elements and 5 categories. The process for measuring researcher's reputation is defined by a metric that generates an index. This index is calculated by using the information contained in the profile of the researcher. To evaluate the approach proposed in the thesis, extensive experiments were conducted. The experiments involved the evaluation of Rep-Model by means of correlation analysis and data mining algorithms. The Rep-Index was also evaluated and correlated with two metrics widely used in the scientific community, the h-index and gindex. As a baseline, all of CNPq researchers in the areas of Computer Science, Economics and Dentistry were used. The work in this thesis is set in the context of identifying the reputation of researchers within the academic sphere. The approach of this thesis is premised be comprehensive and adaptable, because it involves the life science researcher built throughout his scientific career and can be used in different research areas and in different contexts.

Tolerância ao calor em ovinos das raças Santa Inês, Dorper e Merino Branco / Heat tolerance of Santa Inês, Dorper and White Merino sheep breeds

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a tolerância ao calor de ovinos de corte das raças Santa Inês, Dorper e Merino Branco através do teste de capacidade termolítica (exposição ao sol). Foram utilizadas um total de 97 fêmeas vazias, com idade média de 3 anos. O estudo decorreu no verão, onde foram registradas as variáveis fisiológicas temperatura retal (TR), temperatura superficial (TS), frequência respiratória (FR), mensuradas depois de duas horas sob a sombra (1), uma hora sob o sol (2), quinze (3) e trinta (4) minutos após a exposição ao sol, e a taxa de sudação (Sud), no tempo 2. Posteriormente foram realizadas observações de comportamento a pasto durante três dias, no período das 11 às 14 horas, para as variáveis: tempo ao sol; tempo em pé; pastejo/alimentação, ruminação e ócio. As médias de TR1 foram semelhantes para as ovelhas Santa Inês e Dorper e superior para as ovelhas Merino Branco (P<0,05). Para TR2, TR3 e TR4 as ovelhas da raça Merino Branco tiveram os maiores valores, seguidos das ovelhas da raça Santa Inês e com os menores aumentos de temperatura retal nas ovelhas da raça Dorper (P<0,05). Estes resultados refletiram na capacidade termolítica individual, sendo menor para a raça Santa Inês (P<0,05). Após exposição ao sol observaram-se diferenças entre as TS, sendo as da raça Merino Branco mais elevadas, seguidas pelas da raça Dorper e da Santa Inês (P<0,05). A raça Merino Branco apresentou as maiores FR, seguida das raças Dorper e Santa Inês, todas diferentes entre si (P<0,05). Todos os animais expostos por uma hora ao sol apresentaram aumento nas TR, TS e FR (P<0,05), e se aproximaram dos níveis encontrados antes da exposição ao sol após trinta minutos de descanso sob a sombra (Santa Inês e Dorper P<0,05; Merino Branco P>0,05). A taxa média de sudação para as ovelhas da raça Santa Inês foi superior a encontrada para as ovelhas da raça Dorper (P<0,05). Houve diferença entre os animais dentro de cada raça (P<0,05), confirmando a hipótese de grande variabilidade entre os indivíduos e diferenças entre as raças. Com relação ao comportamento, as ovelhas da raça Santa Inês continuaram em pastejo mesmo nas horas mais quentes do dia, tendo sido encontrada uma correlação positiva de 0,64 entre a capacidade termolítica individual e o pastejo ao sol, enquanto as ovelhas da raça Dorper preferencialmente permaneceram à sombra devido ao manejo semiconfinado. No presente trabalho o tipo de manejo alimentar influenciou no tempo de uso da sombra. Sob as condições climáticas encontradas no experimento os animais estudados tiveram seus parâmetros fisiológicos alterados devido à exposição ao sol, e os animais das raças Dorper e Merino Branco mostraram maior capacidade termolítica do que os animais da raça Santa Inês, sendo este um fator que pode influenciar na tolerância ao calor individual. / The aim of this study was to evaluate the heat tolerance of three meat sheep breeds, Santa Ines, Dorper and White Merino using Thermolysis capacity test. 97 non pregnant females (3 years old) were used in the study that took place in the summer. Physiological variables as rectal temperature (RT), surface temperature (ST), respiratory rate (RR) were measured after two hours under the shade (1), after one hour under the sun (2), fifteen (3) and thirty (4) minutes after sun exposure, and sweating rate (SR) on time 2. Were also collected behavioral data during three days in the period from 11:00 to 14:00 hours: say in the sun, standing posture, eating, ruminating and idling. RT1 means were equal Santa Ines and Dorper, and greater for White Merino (P<0.05). White Merino also had greater values for RT2, RT3 e RT4, followed by Santa Ines and Dorper (P<0.05). These results reflected the thermolysis capacity, being lower for Santa Ines breed (P<0.05). After sun exposure differences between ST were observed, and greater values were found for White Merino, followed by Dorper and Santa Ines breeds (P<0.05). In the same way, White Merino had the highest RR, followed by Dorper, which had higher RR compared to Santa Ines (P<0.05). All animals exposed to the sun for an hour showed increased RT, ST, RR values (P<0.05), and approached the levels found before exposure to the sun after thirty minutes of rest in the shade (Santa Ines and Dorper P<0.05; White Merino P>0.05). Sweating rate for Santa Ines breed was higher than those found for Dorper breed (P<0.05). There were differences among animals within each race (P<0.05), confirming the hypothesis of great variability among individuals and differences between the breeds. With respect to behavior, Santa Ines ewe grazed even during the hottest hours of the day, and a positive correlation of 0.64 between the individual thermolysis capacity and grazing in the sun was found, while the Dorper ewes remained preferentially under the shade due to the semi-confined management. In the present study, feedin management influenced the time under the shade. Under experimental climatic conditions, the studied ewes had theirs physiological parameters increased due to sun exposure, and Dorper and White Merino breeds showed a greater thermolisys capacity than the animals of the Santa Ines breed, which is a factor that can influence individual heat tolerance.

This thesis targets the domain of Mobile Learning with the aim of optimizing these initial stages of a new project by identifying commonalities and architectural patterns found in six existing software systems related to research projects in the domain. The results present a set of requirements, guidelines and/or an initial conceptual architecture that can be extended or adapted to a broad range of software systems.

Resilience in families living with child diagnosed with cerebral palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a complex, non-progressive condition that manifests in various forms of motor impairments. This life-long condition holds numerous challenges for the entire family throughout the family life-cycle. While the challenges that these families have to face are many, families seem to have the ability to "bounce back" and to be resilient. Research on the construct of resilience and more specifically family resilience has increased in recent times. South African family resilience research is relatively limited. This study aimed to identify, explore and describe the resiliency factors that facilitate adjustment and adaptation in families that include a child living with Cerebral Palsy. The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation was used to conceptualise the level of family adaptation. The study was triangular in nature, with an exploratory, descriptive approach. Non-probability purposive and snowball sampling techniques were employed. The sample consisted of 30 female caregivers. Biographical questionnaires with two open-ended questions, in conjunction with seven structured questionnaires were used to gather the data. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the biographical information. Correlation and regression analysis was used to analyse the quantitative data, while content analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data. The results of the quantitative component of the study indicated five significant positive correlations with the FACI8. These variables were family hardiness (measured by the FHI), family time together and routines (measured by the FTRI), social support (measured by the SSI), relative and friends support (measure by the RFS), and spiritual support (measured by the F-COPES). The results of the qualitative analysis revealed that social support, the caregivers' acceptance of the condition, and spirituality and religion were the most important strength factors that contributed to the families' adjustment and adaptation. Although the sample was small and the study has limitations, it could be used as a stepping-stone for future research on resilience in families living with a child with a physical disability and will contribute to the broader context of family resilience research in South Africa.

A factor analysis of the career adapt-abilities inventory

In understanding the importance of career adaptability in an individual‟s career development, career counsellors require a valid assessment technique for measuring career adaptability. The Career Adapt-Abilities Inventory (CAI) was originally developed by Mark Savickas (2008) as a measure of career adapt-abilities. The present study forms part of an international collaboration investigating the psychometric properties and construct validity of the CAI. The aims of the present study involved the following: conducting exploratory factor analysis in order to determine whether interrelationships within the items of the CAI can be explained by the presence of unobserved variables; conducting confirmatory factor analysis in an attempt to confirm the hypothesised factor structures of the CAI; and to explore and describe South African university students‟ perceptions of the underlying constructs of the CAI in terms of the language usage and comprehension of the inventory‟s item content. A sample of South African first-year university students were employed in this current study. In an exploratory factor analysis of the CAI, preference was given to the a priori criterion forcing the extraction of five factors. The oblique rotation method was employed using the OBLIMIN method provided by the statistical package in order to derive the simplest and most interpretable factor structure. Exploratory factor analysis supported a five factor solution after the fourth iteration, reflecting the underlying dimensions of Curiosity, Concern, Confidence, Cooperation and Control. These factors support the five scales presented by Savickas (2008). Confirmatory factor analyses were subsequently performed in order to test both the original CAI factor model as well as the factor model that emerged through exploratory factor analysis. After using several goodness-of-fit indices, it can be concluded that the inventory items adequately represent the five CAI scales based on the value obtained using the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation index. The factor model derived through EFA demonstrated a slightly better fit when compared to the original CAI factor model using other fit indices. In terms of the qualitative findings of this current study, participants indicated that the meaning of several items were unclear to them causing comprehension difficulty. Items 8 and 50 were marked by participants several times and can be viewed as the items causing most difficulty with regard to comprehension, with participants pointing out the words „keeping upbeat‟ (item 8) and „conscientious‟ (item 50). Participants were also asked to provide additional comments with regard to the readability, comprehension and applicability of the CAI. On investigation of these comments, three main themes were generated relating to: the comprehension and clarity of the CAI; the CAI enhancing participants‟ understanding of themselves; and the structure, length and general layout of the CAI. In essence, the current study provided useful information regarding the psychometric properties of the CAI using a sample of South African first-year university students. Factor analyses provided some support for the validity of the CAI while the qualitative results provided aspects for consideration in making the CAI more applicable for South African usage. Moreover, a foundation has been laid for further research to be conducted in South Africa regarding the validity and applicability of the CAI for South African populations.

Community Service Through Architecture: Social Housing with Identity

Despite reasonable advances in public policies for housing in the last two decades, Brazil's current housing deficit is 5.6 million housing units. In São Paulo, Brazil's largest city, an estimated one fifth of the population of 17.5 million is currently living in inadequate housing conditions, like the "favelas" (Shanty Towns) (IBGE). The favelas' houses are made from scrap materials such as wood and metal sheeting, they do not have services such as sanitation, water or electricity, and the settlements are usually very overcrowded. The gigantic rate of illegal occupation of urban land has lead to disastrous consequences not only to the people who live in them, but to society as a whole, and to environment sustainability. At most countries, including Brazil, social housing has little to do with diversity and uniqueness of living. Social housing is influenced by functionalism and the economic cost effectiveness of the production process. Unfortunately, new urban areas are still being built using the same traditional ideas, which results largely in a very functionalistic approach of repetitiveness. One unit is repeated into a row of identical blocks. This concept is still used in most of the new Brazilian urban areas. As a result those areas become monotonous and repetitive, lacking identity and uniqueness. This Thesis objective is to expose the negative impacts of the present social housing mass production model, and then to analyze the possibilities of a coherent alternative to housing based on identity, sense of community and uniqueness present at the favelas, which could consistently improve the dwellings and the built environment. The main idea is to find inspiration on the Brazilian favelas to develop a new concept for social housing. In spite of all the physical, environmental, economic and social problems, favelas are an example of coherent housing production processes where dwellers autonomously decide about the design, building and use of their dwellings. They also are usually linked to a strong sense of community no longer found elsewhere. The pattern of these large areas shows an uncontrolled growth of residential units, which leads to a vast, seemingly chaotic, but yet very structured way of living. (Vanderfeesten) The analysis of this pattern of structures is a very strong foundation to develop a modular system of building blocks. The main idea is to create an urban housing environment consisting of modular blocks to provide a "favela-based" pattern. Multiple modules typologies will be designed in order to correspond to each family's needs. The arrangement of the modules will result in open walkways, small streets, larger open areas and a vast amount of balconies, roof terraces, parks, and gardens. As a result there is a great opportunity for social interaction. The main goal is to design a housing neighborhood where each house is unique in its structural composition, providing a way of living in which social interaction is promoted while maintaining each individuals identity through the uniqueness of each unit.

Exploring Family Coherence and Adaptability Among Adoptive Families

The current study sought to answer the question: Does reported family coherence and adaptability differ between parents who completed private, public, and international adoptions? The desired population was adoptive parents in the United States. The survey utilized two existing measures, the Family Sense of Coherence (FSOC) and the Family Adaptation Scales (FAS). Results of a one-way independent ANOVA showed that adoption type (i.e. private, public, international) had no significant effect on FSOC and FAS sum scores. Future research should recruit a larger and more representative sample of adoptive parents in the United States, so that findings can be used to tailor educational programming with adoptive parents.

The relationship between mindfulness and individual adaptability in a dynamic workplace

Purpose. Individual adaptability has been proposed as a source of adaptive performance, an increasingly important performance dimension in dynamic contexts. However, there is limited understanding of the antecedents of adaptability. Mindfulness has been shown to improve performance and well-being in the workplace, but the underlying mechanisms of this relationship are not well understood. Answering this need, we hypothesize a link between mindfulness and adaptability and conduct an empirical study to examined this relationship in dynamic work contexts. Methodology and findings. 198 knowledge workers in dynamic workplaces completed a self-rating survey that measured mindfulness and a multifactor measure of individual adaptability. Correlation analysis found a significant positive relationship between mindfulness and individual adaptability, and also between mindfulness and five sub-factors of adaptability. Regression analysis found mindfulness could significantly predict adaptability and that mindfulness added incremental variability to various sub-scale factors of adaptability, over and above work stress adaptability. In other words, mindfulness is not simply a stress management skill but also enhances other aspects of adaptability such as learning and problem-solving. Implications. Individual adaptability helps to explain the relationship between mindfulness, performance and well-being in the workplace. Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) have established protocols and proven outcomes in organizational and psychological literature.
